Ah I can somewhat answer the question for the GBA Doom II censored wall textures. It does use more space in the ROM, but the censored textures are actually still listed in the game files as separate textures, but link to the same address in the rom. There's no performance penalty at all and both my uncensored patch and the original can play in sync including in multiplayer. As for the decorations, they seem to be removed entirely and never scripted at all from what I can see, so I'm assuming censorship instead of performance. Which reminds me, I need to work on the PrBoom GBA port again hahaha
@@GermanPeter Ah it is what it is, but you still made a really damn good video. You don't see many people check out the GBA Dooms in much depth, which I'm a sucker for haha
People always mention the fact that Among Us violated the Geneva Convention with the Red Cross, but for me, I'll always find the fact that STARDEW VALLEY of all games did the same infinitely more hilarious.
By any chance, would you be interested in going over German Fallout? We've heard a lot about the censorship, but an actual examination of the content hasn't really been done, and the voice actors are still to this day uncredited, as for some reason, only the english and russian dubs seem to credit their VAs. It would be nice if you recognized any and could provide names!
I must note that I loved Doom and Doom 2 on GBA when I got access to them in early 2000s. Back then they were more impressive as tech demos, showing that you could play Doom even on something as small as Gameboy (just remember that back then everything mobile was way underpowered compared to nowadays). At least I had a lot of fun with them, nowadays, of course they are not as good as one might think.
Great video! I think the green blood works well for certain demons and decor (first time I've seen it covered in such detail, no pun intended). According to the Wiki page for Doom 1993, the project's working title was, "Green And Pissed." I find that ironic and hilarious considering the use of green blood (which was also done on some N64 ports of other games). P.S. The Hell Knight bleeding green looks AWESOME. I like thinking that they had some artistic liberties with the custom sprites, and I appreciate the devs adding something (even so minor) to the duology. P.S. Glad I'm not the only one who was reminded of Pyroland :D. I wish more devs would do things like that ^_^.
Wait, if Red Cross is the only one that is allowed to use that particular cross then it begs the question why the hell are they are they only enforcing/going after devs to change the health things in games within the last 5-15 years or so? They've have since what, the 80's at least to put their foot down over the usage of it and have it enforced on the world stage that it can't be used for games in that manner? Even though Green has been the official colour for medical kits for how long?
When I read about the red cross thing I can't help but think its up to the armies to train there soilders and the red crosses job to make sure they do not developers/artists job to avoid using it
Its kinda like with the German version of Wolfenstein 2: New Colossus, they got rid of anything involving Nazis, even changed Hitler, its like they wanted to forget anything that they started back in the early 1900's
I've seen @ShallowVA play some Trailblazer, and it looks really good there! The medkits have this brownish-green tint to them that the dark green cross really compliments.
The funny thing for me is that in the United States a lot of Marijuana dispensaries use the green cross in their logo, so it's like Doomguy is getting high when picking up a health pack.
Remember everyone, if a sentient being has green blood, it doesn't count as homicide when you kill them! Also, watching GBA Doom is like my myopic ass moving around IRL without my glasses.
GBA Doom back then was very unique. Beeing able to play Doom an a train or in the park was awesome. May look laughable today, but beforce the Sony PSP? I had not seen anything like it.
23:34 funny you bring up Wolfenstein 2009, I live in the same area as Raven Software who made the game, and I did alpha and beta testing for them and played Wolf2009 back when it was in very early/rough stages. I still remember testing levels and there being barely any textures in the game, it looked so much different, but the final game didn't change that much. It used to be WAY harder from what I remember since we had to test without the special powers, which made the final zeppelin level super freaking hard. Once they put the special powers into the game it became so much easier.
@@GermanPeter Long little post here but: What is ironic is that after alpha and beta testing Wolf2009, I never played or bought the final game until over a decade later after it was released. The only way to get it now is to buy a physical edition off of ebay, or just get it on the seven sea's online. Though be careful going that route (as I did) because for some reason Bethesda or ID or whoever owns the rights now are actively monitoring Torrents and IP's of people who get it that way, and sending cease and desist DMCA's to their internet IP, which is incredibly stupid considering you absolutely cannot buy it digitally or physically anywhere except second hand, so I have no idea what the point of getting mad at people for getting it elsewhere for free is. It made me lose a lot of respect for them since the only other time I had that happen was from Nintendo when I downloaded Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze or something many years ago (and before that the occasional movie or something but now I use private tracker's for movies and TV shows to avoid that stuff). I purchase most of my games and own over 2,500 on Steam and PC, but the one game I can't buy somewhere legally online I get elsewhere and get 'in trouble' over it. To be fair they never actually do anything and the internet IP company never turns off your service because they want to keep getting their monthly payment, so its more of a scare tactic, but it is annoying to be sure.

23:50 actually, the GBA version of DOOM has 8 exclusive maps in it desined for deathmatching. And are the only official classic DOOM maps made exclusively for multiplayer (except for American McGee's id Map01)
Excellent video. Very informative. Please consider doing on about Turok for the Nintendo 64. With all the enemy sprites changed to look like robots, and the blood changed to sparks.
That new hip edition all the kids play where the SS are changed to Zombiemen... they could have at least just changed the sprite to some rapid firing new monster instead, otherwise a proper 100% playthrough of Doom 2 is impossible when there's Zombiemen firing one shot at a time at you in those maps, taking down the difficulty.
GBA Doom let you turn off shading so that everything was fullbright, which looked ugly but improved framerates across the board. GBA Doom 2 did not let you do this, and it was one of the few things which annoyed me about that, the visuals were already gimped and I wanted more speed for better gameplay. Still much better than the first port though.
regarding the comment "They made their decision based on assumptions"... back then there didn't exist any studies that violent videogames / Media doesn't leas to violent behavior.
Exactly, so they had nothing to go off of on. They just theorized "Well this might be bad", and left it at that. Even when they took these games off the index, the reasoning wasn't "Studies have shown video games don't cause violence", it was "I guess modern games are even worse now".
playing the GBA Doom as a kid after having played the DOS versions of Doom, II and Final Doom was a huge disappointment. The GBA itself felt hard to play the game with control wise. As with Wolf3d, only the uncensored DOS versions have the right kind of sinister feeling and aesthetic to them, there is no reason for me to play these other versions at all.
I'm really love these Doom videos you've been putting out! As much as I love the pixel gore in the og Doom I actually kinda like the bright green blood over the dark red, it makes it a lot easier to see in the dark halls full of dead demon bodies.
Thanks Peter! I first played the gba ports of doom and doom 2 but I had to play them on a emulator because I don’t own the physical cartridges yet along with Wolfenstein 3D on gba
Goddamn though, the colors on the old Meatball are scuffed as all hell in GBA Doom 2, not too easy to notice on that little crusty screen, but he really looks washed out and lacking in shading, not sure if they messed him up when editing him or there's some sort of palette limitation at play.
The GBA definitely has a smaller palette. You can see how the Revenant looks really washed out as well, and they all share the same brown tones as Doomguy's face.
Strangely, if you played the Japanese version of Doom 64, the blood effects are also green but not for the actual demons. Instead only for the blood sprite when you land a hit.
Wtf Germany just why?, I know that here in Ireland censorship really only came into effect in the early 2000s but still it's nothing like how Germany is still to this day, man I've seen 21s red labeled films like the original total recall aliens two and when it released three which both carried the 21s blue tag and a bunch of others as a minor, funnily enough the only one that gave me nightmares was the third aliens and that's probably because we got hold of the director's cut that came out in Canada and we got from the news agency's, still have the VHS copy although DVDs were starting to take over by the end of the 90s we still gathered a large collection of 80s and 90s films all on grainy VHS running at 60hz on a CRT TV in a 32 inch screen set in a odd 1020×920
Is... Is Postal even available in germany or is it still banned cause I would be VERY interested to see if and how they would censor that PG horrorshow
18:29 Could someone explain his remark regarding _Doom Eternal_ ? *EDIT:* Oh, I think, I got it. In normal, unaltered _Doom II - Hell on Earth_ the Archvile just revives recently died enemies. In the version shown here it look like the Archvile would summon new enemies out of thin air because their bodies are invisible. And in _Doom Eternal_ Archviles actually have the ability of summoning new enemies, even if there were none present beforehand. 💡

@@Blaurotmaybe he was trying to say that no matter how controversal most subjects in art is but not what the hell came to your mind.
Also on ModDB I also have a GBA Doom II TC mod for GZDoom too if you're just interested in the quirks.
Oh snap, if only I had known you had made the Doom 2 GBA TC mod, that could have been REALLY useful :D
It's on the list :)

Thank you for doing a video of this master piece
Gutes video

Joa da waren viele Bilder, und er hat dings, sehr frei gesprochen. Würde ich eine 2- geben.
Because there have been amendments to the Geneva convention
First of all - i like your style !
Second - very good video, i can't wait to see more of your videos
Third - KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK !
AIN'T NO WAY YOU ACTUALLY DID IT
2:34 the eric harrison was already sadistic before the… “incident.”
i really like the graphic design for your channel brand
Thanks!
Imo the green Cross works well when its a darker green (like some doom mods like older builts of project brutality do) or even preattier than red
@@Ganondorfdude11 thats cute
I like how theres actual gameplay, instead of just IDKFA typed in and half assly playing just the first 2 levels
Remember everyone, if a sentient being has green blood, it doesn't count as homicide when you kill them!
Also, watching GBA Doom is like my myopic ass moving around IRL without my glasses.
The game being on the index did not stop one in acquiring an illegal copy of it. And because of that it was twice the fun
GBA Doom back then was very unique. Beeing able to play Doom an a train or in the park was awesome.
May look laughable today, but beforce the Sony PSP? I had not seen anything like it.
The video would be an hour long if homie switched to decaf and I'd be ok with it

The Quirks of German Quake when?
Not much to talk about, Quake was indexed here and didn't get a censored port :P
I like your content and You got yourself a new sub! Keep up on what you love! Never give up! Who cares about the hate you get, do what you love!!
Ohh... I'd LOVE to get my hands on Wolfenstein 2009, it really is my favorite in the series.
@@GermanPeter
Long little post here but:
What is ironic is that after alpha and beta testing Wolf2009, I never played or bought the final game until over a decade later after it was released.
I like how you used the word 'livingspace' here :)
it's disheartening seeing how little views you get, i've been watching you religiously since your tf2 content and i seriously think you deserve a lot more success on this platform, this channel just has so much unique content and personality i seriously love it man.
Thank you! Comments like that mean a lot to me, and the fact you watch my videos in the first place even more :) You can always help out by recommending me to other people!
I wouldnt complain about 40k views. Some people put in just as much work as him and get 50

You see, I like using guns that go boom
Good video to kick off October first, it’s relevant to Halloween AND Oktoberfest !!
iVE BEEN WAITING THIOS... FOR SO LONG...
Technically all depictions of blood shown on a screen is pixelated
Peter did you get the oh yes line for when you get to do your sponsors from when you pick up the bfg in doom?
No, but that'd be a cute reference :D

Doom 3 also had summoning Archeviles. Corpses don’t linger in that game either (entirely for performance reasons)

Meanwhile speedrunners throwing their controllers against the wall because they lost their run to "RNG Dude".
What is this "Wolfenstein" game? It looks very similar to a 90s game I used to play called "Nothing Happened, Everyone Was On Vacation 3D".
i always thought the revenant was just wearing shorts 💀
23:50 actually, the GBA version of DOOM has 8 exclusive maps in it desined for deathmatching. And are the only official classic DOOM maps made exclusively for multiplayer (except for American McGee's id Map01)
Yeah, but who will realistically ever be able to play them? :D
The versions of Doom 1 and 2 in the Doom 3 BFG Edition are super obviously censored and it's very obvious that was done to sell it in Germany.
Even know Pikmin 4 came out... There was no soupcan pyro 😢
Plus in the gba port of doom 1 you carry you weapons over to the next episode
3:54 aren't you showing footage with Former Humans (they aren't insane they're just possessed but that's presumably what the manual is referring too)
I'm glad nothing bad happened in human history before video games.....
I woulda replaced the impaled and chained up corpses with skeletons, personally. Doesn't need any gore, while still getting across the point.
Excellent video. Very informative.
Please consider doing on about Turok for the Nintendo 64. With all the enemy sprites changed to look like robots, and the blood changed to sparks.
Will write it on the list, thanks!
10:51 I mean not really, the obvious solution is to replace the cross with the letter "H", like Halo did.
True in Wolfenstein I thought they said “Wubabu” and not Schutzstaffel.
Because everybody knows that as long as blood is not red, it is non violent and child friendly!
Hooray!
12:35 maybe it's vommit
But it's too green to look like that
> Extremely low framerate
BAN THIS SICK FILTH
I'M SORRY JUST WATCH IT ON 2X SPEED
@@GermanPeter That's just "Peter after too much coffee" mode, though...
I didnt know until I saw it, but I think I prefer the demons flying away when berserked instead of gibbing.
Good video!
That's a beautiful thumbnail.
The footage you used for Unity Doom looks a lot better than the normal, how’d you get it to look so good?
I recorded it on my PC! It's the version you get when you buy Doom 2 on Steam, and I recorded it in 1440p, like all my footage.
@@GermanPeter Weird, it didn’t seem to look that good for me, like the resolution always seemed to be the same as the original version
It automatically adjusted to my monitor's resolution, so I have no idea why it doesn't work for you. You should be able to change it in the settings.
@@GermanPeter Odd, I probably just have to manually adjust it then
I'm confused, when would the player death sprite be seen in GBA doom? Is there multiplayer functionality?
Yes. With the link cables, you could link at least two GBAs together.

Hope you talk about Rise of the Triad's built-in censorship mode sometime
Oh, what's that? Can I get some info on that?
@@GermanPeter You can turn off the bloody deaths in the options. For example, General Darian doesn't blow his head off when he drops his bazooka.
Oh, I saw the sprites for that, I didn't know it was an option.
regarding the comment "They made their decision based on assumptions"... back then there didn't exist any studies that violent videogames / Media doesn't leas to violent behavior.
Exactly, so they had nothing to go off of on. They just theorized "Well this might be bad", and left it at that. Even when they took these games off the index, the reasoning wasn't "Studies have shown video games don't cause violence", it was "I guess modern games are even worse now".
Woah, wtf? why does the gba version of doom 2 have different archvile fire sprites?
playing the GBA Doom as a kid after having played the DOS versions of Doom, II and Final Doom was a huge disappointment.
Europe's only port was the GBA one? What is it with Europe and their GBA? I remember an exclusive Alien Hominid port for the GBA was there too!
The censored Doomguy pictures in Doom 2 look like he just gets sad or ashamed by your lack of skill at playing the game...
this guy makes me feel glad to be part-german
(now if only I could master the accent)
That no blood Doom mod looks awesome. Reminds me of the no gore setting on Turrok - tastefully done
@@GermanPeter Well, the lit screen washes out the picture as is, so again, it's almost hard to get a good idea of stuff like that a lot of the time.
You can also adjust the gamma, so at low settings, it looks pretty much on par with the DOS version.

21:01 does this affect arch vile ressurrecting?

Could someone explain his remark regarding _Doom Eternal_ ?
*EDIT:*
Oh, I think, I got it. 💡
After having played Doom 3, I can also mention that the Arch-Viles there summon enemies as well. So Eternal didn't come up with it either!
Green blood always makes me think of the Dreamcast version of House of the Dead lol :) Honestly I'm surprised the GBA versions didn't get censored more than it did
