The jumpscare without anything scary is so funny, it's like your character got spooked or had an anxiety attack all of a sudden. But the cutscene with the metal box over the fight takes the cake however, it's like the censors just gave up and decided "F*** it you don't get to see it, here stare at this wall for a sec." Reminds a bit of the second Edna and Harvey game where they had goblins paint all the implied gruesome scenes bright pink to censor them as a joke.
South Park did something similar in one of their games, where they just described the disgusting scene instead of showing it. But this is something else!
Ah yes, Quake 4, the Magnum Opus of German Video Game Censorship. It should be noted that even Loading Screens where swapped if the original one showed anything that was censored in the game itself. And if Memory serves me right from back in the day, the German version is also incompatible in Multiplayer with the uncensored version, meaning the MP side of it was basically DOA in the German release. That being said, I´m happy to own physical versions of both the uncut and censored versions (it was available uncut in German Stores for like a week or two before it got thrown on the Index) but I own the cut one only for the novelty of it.
Yeah, the loading screens were replaced if there was even a single drop of blood. It's hilarious, because sometimes you REALLY gotta search for whatever they took issue with.
The Stroggification bit was so iconic it even got referenced in a Japanese manga (Chio-chan no Tsuugakuro) and its anime adaptation. And bear in mind their games tend to get censored as much as German releases used to, thanks to CERO. They're the reason Future Gohan always kept both his arms in DBZ games til like Kakarot. So yeah the scene just getting outright skipped in Germany...well at least it makes the protag's state a...jumpscare?
@@GermanPeter I guess that's all German players get, a single line and I guess Kane's now an abomination. Last I recall there was no official Japanese release so they had to import but if there was, the scene would probably be cut there too. CERO doesn't like human type characters being dismembered.
The Outlast: Whistleblower DLC has a similiar horrifying bit where you watch a maniac disfigure and murder someone while trapped and waiting for your turn. That definitely aroused similiar feelings of horror in me to the Quake 4 sequence!
Re: Soldier of Fortune. That game shocked so many people to the point that even in the US some stores carried a censored version aka "The Wal-Mart Edition." You know...Wal-Mart, that store that sells guns and ammo a few aisled down from the bicycles. I won't be surprised if the German version is based off of that edition.
I'm one of those weirdos that loves Quake 2+4. Honestly very few games have given me the same sense of isolation, dread, and body horror as Quake 4. You really feel like you're stuck behind enemy lines, seeing things nobody ever has, in places that are never safe and help will never arrive, watching your body become corrupted and disfigured forever, the idea that a single wrong move can turn heroism into a never-ending nightmare being a sending piece of mutilated machinery bolted to a random wall in a random dark corner lightyears from home.
I'm sure I'd have gotten a similar experience if A) I'd have played it when I was much younger and less jaded B) I had played the version with more than a single drop of blood in it lol I got so bored of the game near the end, it was terrible.
@@GermanPeter also Hi! I love your videos! Do you feel like you're running out of games to cover, or do you anticipate going to different series? Did things like Descent have any meaningful differences?
I think perhaps Quake 4 has too much of this "everything is going wrong" aspect, in my opinion at least. I think there is a point around the middle where before it's like you're on a mission to do something specific most of the time and you often have buddies, but after this point, it's like you're crawling around from one sewer level to the next, then to another random location that doesn't have much to do with the mission, pretty much until you get to the end of the game. I really like Quake 4 and I replay it fairly often. I like the gameplay and the themes I guess, although I can't really put my finger onto why I like it. But this pacing issue or whatever one would call it bugs me on every playthrough. Maybe it also has to do with the fact that I seem to always struggle with ammo? In Quake 2 and many other games, you have all the ammo you need usually. But in Quake 4 I never seem to have much ammo for anything, it never feels like I have enough. Maybe this adds to my feeling. It's not that I dislike the idea of struggling both gameplay and environment wise, I just think Quake 4 drags it on for too long.
The new doom game looks amazing but i think it should have been a new quake game we got announced quake has always been an interesting series and i think it hasn’t got enough attention compared to its older more well known counterpart
Outlast(the funny horror game with the journalist pc) has a death scene similar to the scene you talk about at 8:50. basically, there's a guy in the mental asylum who wants a wife to validate himself because his dad hated him or smth like that, and because your pc is male, he cuts off your genitals instead, killing you in the process. one of the only reasons i still remember it(besides the idea being horrifying) is because even though i was like 8 or smth when i saw that scene, i still had a thought that was something along the lines of "what if it actually worked though?.. and it was me instead?", which is like, one of the most egg-like things i ever thought of as a kid „_„
Oh yeah, Outlast is one other game I heard things like that about :D Interesting that it led to you finding out some things about yourself... good luck with all that!
Another German exclusive feature: The Xbox 360 version had one of the hardest achievement lists in all of the consoles library, needing you to reach the very top of the online leaderboards. At this point, it takes thousands of hours. But the German version, has its own leaderboards, and its own list of identical achievements. And the German playerbase has much much higher leaderboard scores, so it takes EVEN LONGER to reach the top for the achievement.
I remember recommending this one to you, nice to see you getting around to it. I have the 360 version and I am sure there was an alternative cut scene for the player mutilation where it showed a corridor with flickering lights 🤔 ??
Hey, just checked my old notes and you were in fact the person who recommended it to me! I wrote it down and everything and meant to credit you, sorry :D ruclips.net/video/3BY7FiUZvb4/видео.html&lc=Ugym346IzVh9s6aPdDV4AaABAg I credited you in my pinned comment :)
ironically, the "robot" face at 6:17 look arguably MORE gory, because it could look like his face was charred off or something because of the black model
i never even knew there was a quake 4, huh. . . also nice use of the quake logo as a god dang bottle opener. clever. cant wait for when you revisit the doom series, with 2016 and eternal ^^
Oh yeah... there's other games with incredibly bleak world building and lore. Like Half-Life 2 and the Resident Evil games... But cyborgs who butcher other life forms for soldiers and food among other things who are completely blind to any understanding of your pain and misery? I don't think there's *anything* more horrifying than that. A shame some people just blatantly disregard Quake 2 and IV. The censorship is hilarious at best.
Yeah, the Strogg do provide for a cool enemy to fight, not to mention the famed stroggification cutscene. If the Strogg games had better gameplay, people would've appreciated them more
I actually had this Version of Quake 4 back in the day but stopped playing it pretty quickly. However, since I didn't know about the metal box cutscene I laughed out loud when watching the Video XD Since you mentioned Soldier of Fortune 2: the censorship was outright ridiculous. I actually bought the game back then for.... well, a specific feature which was impressive for the time but cut *hehe* out in the german version. Well, bad luck for me, but nowadays interesting to look back at it (especially since I still have the original CD's for those games) Another honorable mention is GTA VC where key elements to earn money and parts of the story were cut out to a point where some things didn't even made sense anymore
Oh wow, I only played the first two Quake games and "that scene" in Quake 4 is... pretty damn brutal. I'm kinda conflicted on which version is better; seeing yourself go through the barbaric experience, or waking up confused and wondering what exactly happened since presumably you were unconscious during the whole ordeal... only to realize the harsh truth once you finally saw yourself in the mirror. Granted, it's more merciful imagining the soldier was unconscious and unaware during what normally would be a very painful process, I'd imagine it's equally as mentally scarring once you finally see yourself and quickly put the pieces together in your mind of what happened during your blackout. I'd say this bit of censorship was arguably better handled than most of the others showcased in this video.
You really think it's better? It removes everything that makes the Strogg horrifying. Modifying your body against your will is terrifying in itself, but doing so while you're ALIVE, for no reason other than pure sadism, is WAY worse. Like I said, it's like Doom without hell, it defeats the purpose.
You mean the German ports? I'll level with you, I tried making a video on them, but there was nothing to talk about. The dub is actually really, REALLY good. The only interesting bits is that a lot of Wolfenstein VAs like Fergus and Frau Engel return, and that VEGA is voiced by Better Call Saul in the first game lol But there's not much more to it, unfortunately. No censorship, no quirks, just great voice acting. Even better than The New Order.
