    Here in rural New Jersey, I have dozens of gartersnakes on my property. My kids love them. We also see quite a few eastern milksnakes, eastern hognose snakes, northern black racers, northern red bellied, northern dekay’s brown snakes, and northern ringnecks. Occasionally we see black ratsnakes, smooth greensnakes, and northern watersnakes. If we hike up into the woods near the power cut, we’ll see Copperheads and Timber rattlers. They’re all awesome creatures.

    Interesting that UNL tested multiple snake repellents and they actually attracted garter snakes in some cases. They found that it is ideal to create a yard environment deters them and simply learn to live with them since garter snakes are harmless. They may bite you if you try to grab them but they shouldn't hurt you. Additionally they can help keep the insect level down in your yard or garden which may be useful to some folks.

    • @Ambaryerno
      @Ambaryerno 5 лет назад +1

      Garters don't eat insects. Their diet consists of fish, frogs, slugs, and earthworms. In some parts of their range they'll eat salamanders and newts. Particularly large ones may take mice, but this isn't common.

    I feel deprived having grown up in a snake-less town (Queens County, NYC) although we did spend summers in upstate NY and had some quality time with the local snakes. Garters, green snakes, and a ring neck were all well mannered and never bit, but ribbon snakes were nasty. A boy without snakes is missing something important.

      Grow your grass long, have rock piles and Rock walls with no mortar. Also get a wildlife pond but don’t get fish since you want to attract their amphibian prey with won’t lay eggs in a pond with fish. Also brush piles are good as well as building a Hibernaculum. Also leave out cover boards which could be untreated plywood and leave them on the ground in a sunny location. Also leave pieces of pond liner on the ground and fold the pieces over so the snakes can hide underneath. Also leaving tin on the ground is any other way snakes can warm up. Also log piles are attractive to snakes for the moisture and cover. Also don’t trim shrubs because snakes like things over grown. I also leave logs on the grounds along the perimeter of the property so snakes can use them for cover and to shelter. I line the perimeter of my property with them.

    I'm no expert either, but it looks to me like a common Garter crossed with a Red-Sided. Note how it's side isn't a red as the one you saw in the thumbnail, therefore it's probably not a 100% Red-Sided Garter snake. Again, though, I'm no expert.

  • @michaels226
    @michaels226 10 лет назад +13

    Not bad info, but not the best either. At least he didn't call for killing them. Oh, and garter snakes ARE venomous. They are a rear fanged venomous snake though the venom seems to be tailored to inverts and is harmless to people and anything else with a backbone. One thing to note, when you make your home unfriendly to snakes, you invite in pests that the snakes like to eat. I'd rather have a snake around than rodents.

    • @rushthezeppelin
      @rushthezeppelin 9 лет назад +2

      michaels226 Granted garters very rarely eat rodents in the wild except in rare opportunistic and desperate cases. If anything they are harmful sorta harmful to your garden as they eat earthworms. Granted I doubt they would put a dent in the average earthworm population. They do eat slugs though which certainly nobody likes in their gardens.

    • @michaels226
      @michaels226 9 лет назад +3

      rushthezeppelin Garter snakes are opportunistic predators. They will eat earthworms, yes, but they will eat unattended baby mice or voles in a heartbeat given the chance. To say they don't except in desperate cases is incorrect. Garter snakes also eat fish and amphibians as well.

    • @Neverpest
      @Neverpest 9 лет назад +2

      +rushthezeppelin Good point about garter snakes rarely munching on rodents except for perhaps a next of baby mice in opportune moments. I have not seen proof of this, but I do believe that garter snakes presence alone would deter mice because of their instinctual fear of snakes. So in that aspect they may help as michaels226 mentioned. However, as you mentioned, they would not likely put much of a dent in the local rodent population.

    I see this happening in the foreseeable future. Women love gardens! I love gardens too! I do have a fear of snakes, but that also includes bats, possums, raccoons. Call me vicious, but the way i know how to get rid of bats is a broom, & that isn't for shoo-ing them away, that's for killing them. Snakes i never handled before, if i have a friend that can teach me how too handle a snake. Why not i'll try too learn, but my heart will be racing that's for sure! Possums & raccoons. Some douchebags like shooting them with bb guns. Now that's vicious! Killing bats with brooms is one thing. They could have rabbis, i'm not risking something that can fly around come down & bite me. Not doing it, but sorry/not sorry any kind of animal lovers. For the raccoons & possums though yeah i would just chase off. I do have a heart. If you shoot animals with bb guns, you're a monster for making an animal slowly suffer. BIG fucking difference hunting & killing for sport, & using BB guns too hurt an animal & letting them live the rest of their life suffering. BIG difference! That's like going fishing, & hooking a duck in the beak. That' straight animal cruelty! Why would you be casting your fishing pole nears ducks? If you want to hunt ducks. Go hunt ducks, & don't torture them. Use human decency, people.

      Hi,
      Bats are very misunderstood creatures. While bats are statistically the most likely to give rabies out of u.s. animals, according to the center for disease control, only one or two people in the U.S. contract rabies each year. While I don't agree with your actions, I can understand your fear. I've heard many negative things about bats and was once worried about them too, until I looked up the facts. The chance of you getting rabies is one in millions. Furthermore, attacking a bat would make it more likely to defend itself and bite you, and in some states it's illegal. Wildlife protection for bats is enforcable with fines and imprisonment by some states as they are endangered. Bats are also critical for the ecosystem and humans. One bat can eat up to 3000 mosquitos a day, preventing wide spread diseases and viruses that kill humans like Malaria. The next time you encounter a bat, either open a window or call animal control/your local wildlife rehabilitator society. These creatures do you much more good then harm. All of these facts were taken from the two listed articles. www.cdc.gov/rabies/bats/education/index.html
      sciencing.com/regulations-removal-bats-5818748.html
