I have two garters I’ve had for a few years and they are incredible, always out and moving, they love to bask! They also love water, and do really well in bioactive enclosures and will use every inch of space you give themThey are a little squirmy so I recommend handling them a lot early on, and I also recommend wearing gloves their musk is not pleasant
I'm here, because Kate McKinnon, formerly from SNL, said she has a garter snake hibernaculum under the front porch of her house in the woods. I wanted to learn more. Thank you!
Thank you for sharing your knowledge and enthusiasm on this group of snakes! It's hard to appreciate everything when there are so many amazing different species of reptiles out there, and only so many animals each person can responsibly keep... But after much research and reflection, garters are next up for me! I think with the limitation of only space/capacity to care for one more tank in the foreseeable future, these active, curious, communal colubrids are going to be the perfect reptile for me! Even if I'll still sigh over the tree boas and geckos and the feisty ackie monitors during every pet store visit. 😁
Finally just got me a baby checkered!!! And used to be common lol I’ve been searching up and down all year and somehow I coudn’t damn find one :/ in Louisiana too, idk where tfff they all went to
you left out one of thier best traits...they are not only very inteligent and curious. but they are very friendly towards poeple and are extreamly easy to tame to the point where you could pick up a wild one and make a new best friend that same day.
Regarding pronouncing scientific names... When I worked in outdoor education, we had a guide on how to pronounce them right 100% of the time. "The only right way to say a scientific name is confidently". If you say it with confidence people won't call you out on it (:
I remember my little brother picking up a garter snake, and he tried to give it a kiss, and boy, I think it wanted that kiss more than he did and bit his lip 😂😂😂😂
Probably so. 90% sure I’d be fine cause they usually don’t eat other snakes so should be good. Also they can crossbreed so you’ll probably get brand new type of babies man.
Garter snakes are so rad and underappreciated.
Another habitat I've seen garters in is mixed forest! Especially in areas close to streams and marshes.
I love garters! They're so cute! I'd love to have a colony of them someday.

Based on the number of times I’ve mispronounced crotalus I somewhat disagree
I want garters but people asking so much for them.

I have a green garter snake and I'm trying to find a cheap spot I can order from to Baltimore. I caught it on the humble.
Do you know if you can keep different species of garters together?
No idea. Probably but I wouldn’t do it
