Hello, I am a soap maker and a chemist. You did a great job. You can use ice cubes only or ice cubes and water to avoid fumes and get the lye to cool down faster. I am room temperature soaper. Never measure the temperature. My dish soap is made out of coconut oil and a bit of castor only. Love lard soaps
Oooo! A chemist! I love that! My son was a chemistry major too and he often tells me what is going on chemically with all of the cooking and farming we do. Isomethimes think it would be fun to have him in a video explaining these things! Going to try the ice cubes next time. Thank you!
Love this! Awesome job! I use ice cubes and our frozen goat milk , minimal fumes when I add the lye! You can soap at lower temps. Your soap is beautiful! Thank you for sharing!! ~jc
@@nanasbabies58So crazy to me too! Here is what the inter webs says... “Lye is the base medium that is required for the chemical reaction to convert fats in tallow, oil, or butter into soap. Without lye, the oils and fats will remain just oils and fats, which cannot lather or function like soaps.” -Medicinenet.com

I did one batch once with goat milk when our goats had babies and remember the ice cubes. I will try it with the water next time. Thank you!

@@SteadfastTrailFarm Why thanks!!!
What is the purpose of the lye in soaps? I’ve always wondered, since it is caustic.
