Since you mentioned Hollow Knight, I love how it has enemies called Baldurs, who block off areas of the map until you destroy them with a spell. Almost like a gate...
I wish there was a proper map of Baldur's Gate as detailed as the one for Waterdeep, with all kinds of little individual buildings and streets labeled very specifically.
Love the video, as always. When you have time you could think about covering some of the influential characters of the forgotten realms. Drizzts, Artemis, Elminster, etc. Keep up the good work!
Spends upwards of 5 hours writing notes on Baldur's Gate.... looks at RUclips, (this video exists).....0_0.... *sets notes down calmly, crack beer, commence video. Thank you Jorphdan.... again.
Waterdeep would be great! I would like to see a longer video on that. There is so much to cover! The pantheon of Faerun would also be cool. I'd be interested in the interactions of them with the mortal servants and or priests. Great stuff keep it up!
id love a series on the deities- id also love a series on prominant figures in general? people like mordenkainen and drizzt etc etc. either way, looking forward to the next video as always!
Would LOVE to see a series on all the deities; when I'm DMing I get so confused on which gods are still around, who melded into whom, etc. And my Clerics and Paladins actually need to know that stuff. :)
Joshua Kammert dude if you ever need help fellow dm here love forgotten realms just read the entire Deity anthology I hope jorphdan does it to but if you need help on the fly send me a message.
It should also be noted that the city is featured in two different Playstation 2 games, Betrayal at Baldur’s Gate board game, the upcoming Baldur’s Gate 3, a comic based on characters from the PC games, and the now released Baldur’s Gate: Descent Into Avernus module. You can also find Balduran’s armor in the first Neverwinter Nights game and Balduran’s Helm in Baldur’s Gate 1 & 2 PC games.
When I played Dungeons & Dragons with my friends, a couple of which had been playing for the first time, I set the start of the campaign in Baldur's Gate.
Another great video, I'd love one on the deities, as a player who began with 5e it can be confusing to keep up with the history and current lore regarding the deities
"You, the hero of the story ..." _[Shows an image of Krydle.]_ Krydle is the bastard son of and elven man named Coran, who in return is one of the companions who can join your party during the first Baldur's Gate game. The half-elf isn't born yet at that point and is one of the protagonists in the currently running Dungeons & Dragons comic series by IDW (Legends of Baldur's Gate, Shadows of the Vampire and Frost Giant's Fury), which takes place roughly 100 years after the events of the games. Oh yeah, also Coran became a noble at that point in the story. Not sure how exactly how he did that. The canonical protagonist of the games is a male human of Netherese descent named Abdel Adrian, who appears in the (universally panned) novel adaptations of the games and also in the pen & paper campaign "Murder in Baldur's Gate". The latter one describes the story of what became of the last Bhaalspawn and how Bhaal came to be ressurected after all. In regards to the general canon, things are a bit wishy-washy when it comes to the BG games and the Bhaalspawn. Certain elements of the games and the novels are considered canon while others are not. Retroactively some elements of the Enhanced Editions of the games have been declared canon, too (for example, Neera is mentioned in Legends of Baldur's Gate). Different writers claim different things. Also, the games took some liberties with the lore at the time, for example the Rashemi witch Dynaheir doesn't wear a mask, Minsc looks caucasian and is tall, despite being Rashemi as well, Edwin - a red wizard of Thay - isn't bald and at no point makes racist comments about non-humans or sorcerers, etc. As to what happened to Balduran on his last voyage, those events can be uncovered in the expansion pack for the first Baldur's Gate game, "Tales of the Sword Coast". The player finds out that his ship stranded on a far away deserted island which is infested by werewolves. (I don't currently recall if the werewolves where already there or if the crew was infected and then inhabited the island by themselves.) Balduran himself died there, but the player can find his shipwreck and some of his belongings (including a butter knife :D ).
While an old video, this was a great video on Baldurs Gate, if a tad short. I enjoyed it. Pulled out my old original 6-disc Baldurs Gate PC game. Going to install it on my classic PC I use primilarly to play epic classics like this gem, along with the original two Fallout and Diablo games. Really loving your channel, Mr. Silent PH "Jordan". Cheers!
Meanwhiel the second BG Gate happens mostly down in Amn, with the events of the expansion "Throne of Bhaal" happening in parts of Tethyr and Calishman.
I'd like to hear more about the deities! I think you touched on it quite a bit in your cosmology and forgotten realms explained series (both of which I really enjoyed), but I'd love to have a deeper dive.
Hey Jorphdan, great video. If you want to know more about the current state of Bauldur's Gate the earliest source you can find is Murder in Bauldur's gate wich has a bunch of stuff for the city proper. I recommend all sundering adventures for their lore purposes, Dead in Thay, Legacy of the Crystal Shard, Scourge of the Sword Coast... all great, sad it's not 5e, it was still Next back then.
Only the final Dungeon I think... is it only the final dungeon in the Sundering module? I don't actually know haha, I know there are two of them, Dead and Thay is a sequence to Scourge.
I think deities would be the way to go. But I would enjoy a series of the lesser used areas the FR like the Sunset Vale or that place that has gunpowder.
Until todays day I thought Baldur's gate was like an ancient crypt/dungeon where some evil Demon/God/Monster was sealed... Now I know it's just a city...
Im writing the history of a player characters family and id really like to know when the Tax Revolt and the Dukes happened in the timeline since the family dynasty is supposed to start during that conflict as they are old sailor merchants. I can make it up of course, id probably put it around the 1000 DR mark, but having a reference somewhere and making it as timeline appropriate as possible would be nice. Just throwing this out there in case someone picks up on this. Thanks for great videos Jorphdan!
From the Baldur's Gate games I've read about many places around Faerum and some caught my attention, for example the wars between elves and drows or the Aboleth you meet in the drow city in the Underdark (I don't write it because I don't remember the full name).
I've been thinking of doing a let's play, but I'd like to stream it live. Which means I need to call and upgrade my internet bandwidth. Eww talking to internet companies... I'll get on that :D
I noticed that you used pictures from the "Murder in Baldur's Gate" adventure for D&D Next. Based on the video, I am assuming you used it for a resource, but I could not tell for sure. Some of the info was glanced over and there are parts that were missed. The city guide in the adventure was thick with information.
I came up with rolling tables to determine where my characters are from, and two of them rolled that they grew up in Baldur's Gate. They also both rolled that their favorite liquor is Wyvern Whiskey, the highly-prized and oft-counterfeited Nimbrian alcohol with a real wyvern scale in the bottle.
I am really hoping to run PotA and a video discussing The Dessarin River, Red Larch, and the important lands mentioned as back story. Who tf are delegates of Mirabar? They seem important, something describing Mirabar (and the city they were headed to Goldenfield, then Waterdeep) would be very helpful. Oooh a Factions of the Forgotten Realms would be nice. Less necessary but nice.
I've been wanting to do a factions video for a while. I haven't run PoTA but maybe I'll buy it and try to do a "intro to PoTA" video. Won't happen soon but I'll put it on my list of topics! Thanks for the comment!
Jorphdan the book describes the area the story happens in really well. But it skims over the general geography rather quickly. The Dessarin Valley is described as a gateway to the North, between important places like Waterdeep and the rest of the world. While that's good enough to jump in and play, it feels sortof empty for a lore junky.
I'll strive to go deeper next time! In honesty I made a few simple videos for the next few weeks as my personal life is super busy. Come mid October I'll get back on track and be able to dig in further :D
The delegates from Mirabar seem to have been made up entirely for PotA. The only mention of them I could find (and I looked for a while when I first started running the campaign) was in the module itself, with no other outside references other than a listing of Majarra as Waterdeep nobility. I don't have any information about Mirabar beyond what you can find on the Forgotten Realms Wiki forgottenrealms.wikia.com/wiki/Mirabar but considering how far out of the way it is from the campaign, it is largely irrelevant. Goldenfields is actually extremely relevant. Not only is it a main stronghold of the Emerald Enclave faction, it is one of the few places in the valley where the party could conceivably find a cleric powerful enough to cast raise dead or greater restoration. For a very thorough write up of the area, see Storm King's Thunder, pages 44-48. Waterdeep is the largest city in the world, and is absolutely worthy of a video on this channel. Alternatively, see these videos for a different take ruclips.net/video/DQe9UEFIdhc/видео.html
Awesome video again Jorph! Keep up the good work! My suggestion for new topics is maybe having a series of heroes and villain personalities of renown. Elminster, Khelben, Simbul, etc.

The iron shortage isnt a "sidestory" , Sarevok, the protagonist's arch enemy and also a Bhaal spawn, orchestrated all of it to create the was between BG and Amn, it's all part of his plan
Gods are cool, places of interests are Thay, Lusken, Imputier Drgaon Coast, Drow cities of Menzoberan: Ched Nasad, Maerimydra, Menzoberranzan, Szith Morcane. These all would be very interesting🤔💯😎👍🏼
In all seriousness Baldur's Gate games all take place on the sword Coast region. Sword Coast has both Baldur's Gate and the City of Amn. If anything you would learn a lot about the lands surrounding Baldur's Gate just by playing the games.
What about the most recent past? -> Murder at Baldurs Gate another time Bhaal meddled with the city, it leads to its current Grand Duke and the Death of the Protagonist of BG and BG II
Big Fan....I demand forgotten realms deities considering you've already brought up a few aka the dead three but not the most important sir lysonsbane my Lord Kelemvor
@Jorphan You should do a video explaining *all the available options a pc has in a particular place in FR* . For example can a pc hire a guard, start a business ? and so on. Also what happens when a player dies ? can he be resurrected ? what happens to his body if he visits this particular plane ? LORE is amazing but I think you covered this pretty well and now is time to guide dm's to run a campaign in a particular town or plane (as of game-play's perspective) . Best of luck You are amazing :D
I wish I could cite a source for this (possibly the wiki), but I remember reading about how Baldur's Gate doesn't allow carts within the walls of the city. All cargo is hauled through the city by porters and loaded into outgoing caravans for a not-exactly-modest fee. Truth or fiction? Baldur's Gate: You thought COMCAST was a monopoly?!
Not a specific time, but according to the book "The Grand History of the Realms" (Ed Greenwood and Brian James - 2007), in 227 DR (Year of the Raised Banner) Orluth Tshahuyr established the realm of Shavinar "...to the north of present day Baldur's Gate"(pg 67) - which reads to me as after that year. Then, on pg 108 it talks of 865 DR (Year of Flamedance), when Sammaster meets Algashon Nathire "...near or in Baldur's Gate" - which reads to me that it existed with that name at that time. So, not as specific as you'd like but with sources, BG was founded between 227 and 865 DR. The book I'm referencing can be found here: www.amazon.com/Grand-History-Realms-Forgotten/dp/0786947314

the interesting thing is that the Balder's Gate games protagonist is actually Duke Abdel Adrian, who is well known because of his actions. He is also a plot point for a few adventurers currently in D&D. He also might be an interesting subject for a video.
@Travis Nilsson Personally, I like to believe that the Baldur's Gate game protagonist and Abdel are two separate characters, and there is enough evidence between the games and novels to prove my theory. In the games, the people of Baldur's Gate figure out the game protagonist is related to Bhaal, but in the "official" novels, they never figure out Abdel's heritage. Shadows of Amn's intro hints that the game protagonist was forced to leave Baldur's Gate partly because of this and what happened at the end of Siege of Dragonspear, but Abdel was subsequently kidnapped and taken to Amn. Abdel still has his Bhaalspawn essence while the game protagonist, at the end of Throne of Bhaal, had to surrender his/her Bhaalspawn essence if he/she chooses to remain a mortal at the end. The only reason why Abdel was targeted by another Bhaalspawn during Murder in Baldur's Gate is because he never gave up his Bhaalspawn essence even though in the Throne of Bhaal novel, he gave it up. In short, the Baldur's Gate games are more canon over the novels (Argue at your own risk, I got a lot of ammo on my side!), the game protagonist gave up his/her Bhaalspawn essence in Throne of Bhaal to remain mortal, while Abdel was off doing his own thing, and a few years later he became the Grand Duke of Baldur's Gate since the game protagonist's reputation had been ruined because everyone figured out he/she is one of the children of Bhaal, but they don't know that Abdel is one too.
With Baldur’s Gate 3, we know what happened to Balduran
Jorphdan! We need a potential updated Baldur's Gate video for the latest BG3 news drop today! :D
Yup!
hahaha remember how we all felt 4 years ago
It would be really cool to cover all the main God’s! Just like the wheel cosmology! It’s give an even more complete idea of what the worlds like
Did he ever release this?

Sounds like Deities should be next :) I'll start working on them should appear November-ish :)

The way the City was formed reminds me of how Quebec City in Canada is with the old historic areas within a wall and the outer city being more modern.
"He later vanished on another Sea Fairing adventure and never returned"
He is now the mindflayer "The Emporer"
Ya had me at 'Ball Spawn'
Hey-Oh!

I can't be the only one who laughed at "Ball Spawn".
"Forced the erection" was pretty good as well.
I started DMing Decent into Avernus and this is a crucial video in its success Thank you J

Great videos my man. Just enough information where if I want more I can search it out myself. Keep up the good work.
Good video, with the announcement of 3 I hope to see more into detail lore.
OH! I NEED MORE D&D Comics! Especially Forgotten Realms ones!
Now I want to go play Baldurs gate again
I'd like to see a video about Elturgard/Western Heartlands and its history. Keep up the awesome work.
I think deities would be the way to go. But I would enjoy a series of the lesser used areas the FR like the Sunset Vale or that place that has gunpowder.

I was beginning to wonder when you would get around to Baldurs gate I consider this the best birthday gift ever thank you and keep up the good work
Happy Birthday! :D
Jorphdan thank you
Happy birthday
Mark D'Asaro thank you
linguistically oversight 86 Happy - oh- wait five months ago...
More information on deities and the different types of gods like over gods and lesser gods would be good. Thanks for the great video
Thank you Jorphdan!
I hear good things about the Baldur's Gate series, and if I ever get a suitable replacement for my gaming computer, I might finally give it a try.
Im writing the history of a player characters family and id really like to know when the Tax Revolt and the Dukes happened in the timeline since the family dynasty is supposed to start during that conflict as they are old sailor merchants. You could easily talk about the different Dales. You also said you might do one on Blackstaff.
From the Baldur's Gate games I've read about many places around Faerum and some caught my attention, for example the wars between elves and drows or the Aboleth you meet in the drow city in the Underdark (I don't write it because I don't remember the full name).
I played the game after watching one of your previous videos. I highly recommend playing it, and it would be cool to see you do a let's play on it.
I've been thinking of doing a let's play, but I'd like to stream it live. Which means I need to call and upgrade my internet bandwidth. Eww talking to internet companies... I'll get on that :D
Good stuff, and it should go along great with a lot of your other videos, showing a full setting of what you cover.

Awesome video again Jorph! Keep up the good work!
My suggestion for new topics is maybe having a series of heroes and villain personalities of renown. Elminster, Khelben, Simbul, etc.
Excellent, the explaination is crystal clear👌
I suggest either the yuan-ti organization “ the coiled cabal” or Lich secret organization “The Twisted Rune” or origination of the demonfey the Fai’ry👍🏼👍🏼💯
The iron shortage isnt a "sidestory" , Sarevok, the protagonist's arch enemy and also a Bhaal spawn, orchestrated all of it to create the was between BG and Amn, it's all part of his plan

Could you possibly make a video covering Icewind Dale?
I'll add it to my list :)
Thanks dude. I'm currently in the middle of the Icewind Dale trilogy. I've not read it before but I am really enjoying it a lot.
I really wanna take over Baldur's gate right about now.
Thank you for the great upload once more! I agree with the rest of chat, deities would be nice!
“Yo dude, invaders are coming towards the docks”
“Oh crap dude, get the chain”
This is how the english protected their fleet while in the harbor duing the 17th century
In all seriousness Baldur's Gate games all take place on the sword Coast region. Sword Coast has both Baldur's Gate and the City of Amn. If anything you would learn a lot about the lands surrounding Baldur's Gate just by playing the games.
And reading the sourcebooks. The lore in the games isn't 100% accurate.
@@LightStreak567 I'm playing BG now and loving the world and the lore, though I'm a complete layman in D&D. Could you point me those sourcebooks?
Not to be a pedantic nerd, but Amn is a country and not a city-state like Baldur's Gate or Waterdeep. The capital city of Amn is called Athkatla.
Yes please to doing a whole bunch of episodes on the deities!
And here I thought Baulder's Gate was the entrance to Hell cause of the Decent into Baulder's Gate.
This rocks!!! Thanks man!!
Thank the lord. Been waiting for someone to do gods
Poor Balder disappeared in Anchorome to the far west. North of Maztica. Though personally, I want an Osse survival campaign setting.
Definitely delve into the deities!!
I love Baldur's Gate. Both the game and the place.
Who is Volo?? He must have been a great adventurer to write down the monster manual ;) ;)
I think the tabaxi are from maztica mostly, and by tabaxi I mean the humanoid feline race, wonder if we will get a vid on that place?
What about the most recent past? -> Murder at Baldurs Gate another time Bhaal meddled with the city, it leads to its current Grand Duke and the Death of the Protagonist of BG and BG II

@Jorphan You should do a video explaining *all the available options a pc has in a particular place in FR* . For example can a pc hire a guard, start a business ? and so on. Also what happens when a player dies ? can he be resurrected ? what happens to his body if he visits this particular plane ? Baldur's Gate: You thought COMCAST was a monopoly?!
Well george r.r. martin was sure as hell inspired from d&d 2:34
Please do a series on Kara Tur. I don't think one 5 min videp will do it justice though ;)
Loving these videos...
Thanks I dug through that book as well! Super valuable resource!
How does the PS2 game (Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance) fit into the story of the city?
Ty for the info❤❤❤
🤔 ok there was a Forgotten Realms Dark Alliance game...2 of them in fact with both having a Dritzzt inserted & i asume bc of WOTC moniker the games were cannon but can you explain what event did Eldrith the Betrayer serve and die in and what was the entity's name that made her a Blackguard and why is there no mention of a Black Horde threatening Baldur's Gate ever?

I SERVE THE FLAMING FIST!
Thank you for your Service. (Keg of Ale has been sent to your unit)
Deities please. :)
How about explaining what level 20+ means? Like can anyone achieve it? Is it still a thing?
Yes, levels much higher were possible in 1st and 2nd edition. Some classes could even reach 40!
Cover chosen of gods!
ah yes, the ball-spawn, or how dad's refer to their children.
Suggestion: legacy of the green regent
Cormyr
"Baalspawn" spelled slightly differently could describe all children, really.
Cover the city of Union!!
Elturgard? If you can? Please? :)
I'll add it to the list :)
Baldur's Gate soon open
Whenever I used to bring up the original Baldur's Gate for PC my friends always assumed I was talking about Dark Alliance for the Xbox and Gamecube 🙄
Gods. Specifically Thrazidune.
Bloodstone? Please?
Id find the Deities most interesting!
Who here revisited this video because of Baldur's Gate 3? 😂😅
Bhaalspawn is a very unfortunate name
I would like a video on Icewind Dale before moving onto the gods. Waterdeep -> Icewind Dale -> gods/what ever.
Why was it called Baldur’s instead of Balduran’s
Baldur is just short for Balduran.
I have a lets play of BG1 and working on BG2
Dragons!
the interesting thing is that the Balder's Gate games protagonist is actually Duke Abdel Adrian, who is well known because of his actions.
One question: Who payed for the wall?
I believe it was Balduran, whom the wall is named after.
This wall is made to prevent illegal Arcadian immigration. I want Arcadia to pay for it!
Aren't we all just ball spawn...?
