    Their playing is so tight, but sometimes I wish the bari was a bit louder. I love the booming low sound sticking out just a little bit from the rest of the voices.

    The low fidelity of early sound recording technology did absolutely no justice to the complex and rich tonal quality of a saxophone section. It’s a shame digital recording didn’t really exist in the big band era.

      @@onefootinthegroove39 oh yes well by the end of the 1940s high fidelity recordings via analogue tape became the standard so I guess I should rephrase that it’s a shame high fidelity recording didn’t really exist in the early
      Big Band era.

    I read in the paper about how some congresswoman carried a bill to cut funds for military bands, also your petition failed.That is soooo sad. I wonder if she ever saw/heard what you guys do, it's so inspiring she would pull the bill for sure!! What a fabulous recruiting tool! Everyone on this post is ready to join up right now!
    I could make a few PC incorrect comments about that lousy bill but I will refrain. As a sax player myself I have a real appreciation for how well you all play. I just wish I had your "saxophone standard" and "inside the big band" when I was starting out, I might have stuck with it! Fabulous, don't ever let them tell you you're not needed!

    Question for the USAFB: How dense is the harmony on these arrangements? Am I hearing 4 parts with doubling? 5 parts? BTW, thank you, it sounds terriffic!

      +mandohat It's usually a 4 part with a double. It's most common between the second alto and the barry.

      In the case of Cottontail, it's actually the lead alto and bari that are doubled.

      Yep, Alto on top, bari usually an octave down, makes sure the harmony is nice and tight while still having melody there, cool to see a different way to make harmony other than, string sections, acapella, piano and guitar ect

    Can you imagine the world wide goodwill for the USA if these guys were sent around the world instead of drones, bombs, and guns??!! What peacemakers they could be! All their stuff is extremely well recorded and photographed. Supersax has nothing on these musicians.

      Lead alto is using a NY Meyer 6MM, and lead tenor is using a Ted Klum mouthpiece.

    I am just quite puzzled by the barisax that is used. The "guard" over the top two keys on top are things I have never seen before. What model is this instrument?

      +Nils Tillander It looks like a Low Bb P. Mauriat baritone, but I'm not one hundred percent sure though. They're just one of the more popular companies that makes new Low Bb baritones still.

      I don't know for sure but they probably went to boot camp and everything but went into music after graduating from basic training. If there was a war where they desperately needed soldiers, they would probably be sent out as a last resort

      For the regular military bands they do go through basic training and everything, I'm pretty sure it's different for the president's own military band as they are always where the president is and they focus completely on their music and I don't think that they go through basic. the band director for the correlating middle school for my high school was one person away from getting into the presidents own military band on alto saxophone out of about 5,000 people.

      7theoutdoorsman The Jazz Ambassadors did each selection in a complete take with no splicing. We filmed each section individually, and they are playing along to a recording of themselves for technical reasons. What you hear is indeed the group playing the excerpts from start to finish.
