Also: in thrift stores, check the bottom of kids toy bins and shelves. Next to disgusting grossness, there are often cool small plastic parts, and if you ask nicely, you often get them for free :)
Oh man, so true. I walked into a local friendly game store, very magic-focused, to pick up a few boosters for my 9 year old son who was with me, and one by one, three gamers each came up to him to say hi, and give him a few cards. One guy grabbed a fist-full of cards, easily 100+ of commons and stuff he didn't need... And just handed it to him, saying have fun, he does this for all new, younger players. My heart grew three sizes. It was so touching.
The terrain kit is a fun idea! And yes, as someone with a 3D printer: half my bits are failed prints! Hammers, mermaids, simple plates or clock parts. And if I weren't in a building hobby, I would throw them out.
I can confirm, failed 3D prints are great for modeling My school 3D printer had random fail, and I used failed bits to create Tyranid snake for base of my Ork boy
Just days after posting this, Ted Cabbage was found dead in his room. The cause of death was ruled as being "pounded into a bloody paste with various Funko Pop parts used as bludgeoning instruments." There are no suspects at this time.
Dude you are so right about supporting your local club / store. My local store is so friendly and they will let any one look though the huge bits box they have there.
This video was super inspiring! I love how you talked about how no matter what a person has, their enjoyment of creativity will never change. Art is something that can be created by anyone! Very powerful message!
It's nice to see encouragement for the bits box process. A proper bits box is one of my long term hobby goals, but I don't just want it to be 3d printed (because I have one), I want everything!
I have that exact little tool box... on another note I hit up my local thrift stores and dollar stores on a semi regular basis. Grabbed some cheap sci-fi toys that I based and repainted for some aliens and a big ass war bot for Stargrave. Toys looked like crap, but with a decent paint job they look as good as a $45 GW model. I also buy cheap model kits like WWII tanks, battleships, jets, rockets, or cars. Lots of neat little pieces you can repurpose and then I use the sprues for things like railings or pipes for terrain. Also grab any box packaging from work (I work in IT so lots of foam and cardboard from hardware) that has a neat shape to use as a base to make a terrain piece. I also tend to buy old tech like out of date printers, phones, etc. and take them apart or buy dart guns, water guns, and ever cheap spray bottles. Tons of neat pieces for terrain.
This this slower kind of video has made me realize how much I like it would RUclipsrs have a specific flair. Because I never really noticed the lack of jump cuts until I really noticed it. Every shot is a different angle and it makes it so engaging to watch.
My brother is an educator who works with social services. He brings me bags of broken toys and discarded knick-knacks. You can probably do the same if you know someone that works at a daycare center.
Most of my bits boxes come from friends who have had kids haha. i told them to keep all those broken toys and donate them to me over the years. was a great source of junk gold haha
damn, that closing message was really great. i love hearing from likeminded people who believe in the inherent value and beauty of human experiences. no matter what you have access to, whatever you make will be beautiful in its own way, because it was made by you, and in some small way represents everything in your life that has led you to the current moment.
Lol. Love it. While abit different, I was at one time an electronics recycler. That being said, I still have my little treasure box of broken IC chips, Tantalum Capacitors, BGA Chips, CPUs etc... I can totally relate to cherishing a bits box!! Thanks for sharing yours! Cheers mate!
I love that bits box. I think once I have finished my current mini projects I'll try to do two bits box one for futuristic stuff and one for medieval stuff. Thanks for the idea !!!
When I first started the hobby, I asked some locals if they had any spare bits. One guys gave me a bunch of stuff and I think about whenever I wanna kitbash something.
To prevent hoarding, I allowed myself one cardboard bankers box for terrain bits and dodas and if that box should overflow, then I need to reassess my bits to keep them in line.
Been doing some gaslands builds. My nascent bits box is currently stocked with hot wheels bits from peoples childhood collections. People are very willing to donate toy cars if you send them pics of the weird post apocalyptic vehicles you turn them into
I've made so much terrain with bits from dismantled dollar store toys. They have figures that can be turned into statues. But my fave is to take apart some knock off transformers for machine bits.
I love weird thrift store sculpture finds. I don't game but I still have lots of bits for arts and crafts. After a hundred projects or so - you have a pretty nice collection of paint, googly eyes, beads, pipe cleaners, yarn, clay, scrapbook paper, old keys, fabric, ribbon, antique photographs, a cuckoo clock........ OK, I might have a little problem. :)
Your Bits Box organisation is like my old Lego box. Yes, there was once dozens of kits, but they all became one mess of utter imagination. Sifting through for random pieces was such a nostalgic memory...except when you want that one specific piece and spend ages searching for it haha
I use take away containers as bits boxes for my miniatures and label them based on their respective armies, bits, etc. I've found this structure is a lot more efficient as you know where bits are located. For terrain I use the 7 litre and 5 litre food storage containers from my local supermarket. They cost about $10 to $14 Au each, so I generally wait until they're 30% to 50% off and buy them in bulk. All of these I store on my bookshelves as I've found that the one place where space is wasted are the walls. For 6-foot high bookshelves I heighten them with the 4 cube shelves from Kmart, and with the taller shelves I store small plastic storage containers on top.
As always your videos are awesome and heartwarming, but also uplifting in a way that motivates me to go create. Also your merch is some of the best I've ever seen, the tarot death shirt is absolutely perfection for my, the fabric is great and the print is top notch; and the abracadabra (arcane ugly) crew neck sweater is pure perfection
Chaos = Creativity!!!! Also cool video idea, blind dip your hand into each section of the bits box and pull stuff out, then with that random combination make something amazing :P
You, Bill making stuff, and studson studios have convinced me to make a bits box.... Or maybe a few. I have plenty of bits ...but it just looks like clutter cause idk where to put them. Bam! Bitz Boxx
This new box has a huge lid. That's unused space wich would bug me. I thought that it would be pretty easy to attach something that can hold all flat materials like foamboard, MDF, whatever into the lid of the box. The fuller the bits box the better ;) But as always: A really enjoyable video ^^
This is awesome. My bits box is currently a heap of boxes and most of my shed. Generally insanely chaotic like creating in the aftermath of an explosion. This was a great video. Love the insight into the personal connection to the...bits (that could have been worded better) Also, I feel the exact way with 3d printing too. I find I am more creative when making things from found or scrap materials because I am not overly conscious of price. If I am paying a lot for materials it makes me too cautious to experiment. Love your work! Cheers
Great Cat print too, I wanted to ask whete you got it before you even mentioned it. Great find and if you find yourself without room for it, you know where to find me 😀
I hear you on 3D printing. I hate messing around with software and computer type troubleshooting. I'd much rather troubleshoot physical objects I can hold in my hands and fix with said hands.
I have a goodwill by the pound where I live so I can find random stuff for .30 to $2 a pound. It's gotten me too much random stuff though so I have been giving away some of it. I am trying to find some better containers to better hold all the random stuff. All my current organizers are filled with minis and I don't want to mix up that stuff.
Oh how you organise your bits box looks so overwhelming to me. Since I don't have that much terrain stuff yet, I usually have organised my bits into different limbs and weapons (melee and ranged). Since then I can just add different things together. Now I do need to sort out my feet and torsos that I have somewhere. But yeah you have been my primary inspiration for making weird and wonderful stuff
You are correct about buying full models on Ebay not worth it. BUT if you focus on searching for model junk lots, you can find "gold" for a decent price
Also: take apart all your dead appliances! A dead printer will populate a bits box RIGHT QUICK. Especially if you're making scifi terrain for Warhammer 40k or whatall, appliances that you (or your neighbors, or your apartment building) throw out will keep you rich with structural bits.
90% of the time I just use a black spray paint primer and then I dust a white spray paint primer from above. I like the games workshop brand or rustoleum (but you just have to be careful not to overdo it with rustoleum)
I trash-bash a lot of things. Look at all of the products in your kitchen. My wife will rinse and save me all of the things that have cool shapes or textures in a bag near the recycling bin. The dollar store will randomly have bags of cool stuff too.
This isn't really a bits hack, but war gamers often forget or don't have objective markers. So cut a nice 3cm by 3cm circle out of scrap card or used printer paper and have a small stack of them available (about 6 to a dozen) and just have a marker/pen/pencil available to write a number on.
Not sure if its 100% your style, but what if you tried making some Gaslands models? I bet you never tried using HOTWHEELS in your art before. Neither have i until recently, very cool opportunity
I cut all of my stuff off of the sprues and sort them out. Then my girlfriend takes all of my extra pieces for my undead army and uses them for terrain
So this might sound terrible and i dont wish it upon you, but it seems funny in my head - so dont take it to seriously. But once you are ready to see the great beyond, make sure your bits will go with you :) … in a Big bits box (coffin)
All hail the cabbage baby.
I am most grateful
You have my permission to absolutely mangle that case Miscast style
Also: in thrift stores, check the bottom of kids toy bins and shelves. Next to disgusting grossness, there are often cool small plastic parts, and if you ask nicely, you often get them for free :)
I wanna throw in, sometimes they even have old warhammer or model kits!

Paying it forward ; I love that.
How in the nine hells can someone be so organized AND so chaotic in the SAME TIME!!??!!??
Wonderfull and inspirational, indeed...
The terrain kit is a fun idea! And yes, as someone with a 3D printer: half my bits are failed prints! Hammers, mermaids, simple plates or clock parts. And if I weren't in a building hobby, I would throw them out.
I can confirm, failed 3D prints are great for modeling
My school 3D printer had random fail, and I used failed bits to create Tyranid snake for base of my Ork boy
My sisters starting to realise that her funky pops are going missing, she doesn’t know that they’re all discombobulated in my bits box
Surviving Funkos tell each other terrifying campfire tales of the Ted Cabbage.
"My entire character range was wiped out! I'm the only survivor."

I really loved hearing your wisdom, thank you for this.
Much love miscast! You inspired me to keep working hard on my ttrpg when I just wanted to give up. Thanks for all you do!
Fantastic points. It's not just the bits, but the journey. It's both in how we got here, and where we go next. So cool
Very true, the bitz box holds as many memories as bolters
your studio is great! bits boxes are the best this is true . cool video, great soundtrack
your bits box reminds me LEGO box that I got as kid as my brothers were "to old" for LEGO ;) Of course you never get to old to have fun :D

LOVE the music in this one. Also question: does a closet full of interesting trash count as a bits box? Asking for a friend and that friend is me.
Who are the artists? Anyone know?
@@jtzofrea Mythologica by Ofrin
The answer is yes.
Well technically it's rectangular and wooden..... so that makes it a big box.

Thrift store toys chopping into bits are fun to do or even trash can become bits.
