Just so you know, Jen, at the time of filming Death Becomes her, Goldie Hawn was 46, Meryl Streep was 42, and Bruce Willis was 36. Willis was actually younger than both Hawn and Streep.
I never thought of Goldie as older than Meryl but of course she is! She had won an Oscar while Meryl was still at Yale Drama School! Thanks for the information!
This isn't exactly a horror movie, Jen, it's more of a horror comedy, but thanks for doing this movie! 😄 Death Becomes Her came out at the dawn of the CGI era of the 90s, and won the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects in 1993.
Fun Fact: The cinematography for Death Becomes her was done by long time John Carpenter collaborator Dean Cundy, who also worked on Halloween, The Fog, Escape From New York, Halloween II, The Thing, and Big Trouble In Little China, along with previous Robert Zemeckis films like Romancing The Stone, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, and the Back To The Future trilogy.
This was always one of Bruce Willis's best roles. Totally against type, playing a weak, scared man, nothing like Die Hard or any other movie he's done before or since. He actually acted in this and did a fantastic job.
Fun fact 2: There was a deleted scene in which Lisle (a little miffed) tells Ernest that her clients only exist of movie people. She tried getting Shakespeare, Max Factor and Abraham Lincoln to share their magic... but they all refused (implying she is much older than 71) and so she decided... to kill them.
Fun fact: Ernest had another love interest in the film called Toni (played by Tracey Ullman) who was a bartender in the film. After the makers decided to change the ending all of her scenes were deleted. After Ernest lands in the swimmingpool the potionbottle is still intact and he takes it with him to Toni who then stages Ernest's death. You can still see some of her scenes in the original theatrical trailer including other deleted scenes. There was a so much cut from this film. The ending had the two devious ladies looking pretty, sitting at a terrace in Switzerland being bored while Helen suggests other places to go. Then we see Ernest and Toni also there... in the park. They are old... and we see Ernest covering Toni's old hand with his still young hand. Madeline (Not knowing its Ernest and Toni) comments on how pathetically old those two look and Helen says yeah.. but her face tells us differently. It was considered too poignant for such a funny movie. I am very glad they changed it to the funny funeral ending but I would still love to see it. At the end there was a Psycho type shot with skulls superimposed over Madeline and Helen's faces. More than 30 scenes were cut... big ones... one in particular had Meryl all frozen after spending a whole night in the freezer after Ernest falls asleep on the couch. The maid discovers her when she comes in to work and Ernest makes up some bs story about some Swedish beauty treatment she's trying. He sends the maid home, drags Madeline up the stairs and promises her he will make her his masterpiece. Parts of this scene can be seen in the original Theatrical Trailer.
"The director's name looks familiar, but I can't place it right now." Uhhhh, Robert Zemeckis, Jen? Romancing The Stone? Back To The Future? Who Framed Roger Rabbit? Forrest Gump? Any of those sound familiar? lol 😆
Death Becomes Her was shot entirely in Los Angeles, Jen. The Greystone Mansion served as Ernest's funeral home, and the Ebell of Los Angeles was the location of Helen's book party. The exterior of Madeline and Ernest's mansion is located at 1125 Oak Grove Avenue in San Marino, but the interior was a set built on a soundstage. The final scene where Helen and Madeline tumble down a set of stairs outside a chapel was filmed at Mount St. Mary's University in Brentwood.
Love this movie! It won the Oscar for Best Visual Effects, beating out ALIEN 3 and Batman Returns. The CGI looks really good by today's standards and without it, we wouldn't have JURASSIC PARK. The film received mixed reviews but became a box office hit, making over $150 million dollars against a $55 million dollar budget. It's now Considered a cult classic.
Wow how funny you and Ashleigh Burton posted the same movie on the same day! This movie and Elvira mistress of the dark are my favorite comedies of all time. Romy and Michelle and Heartbreakers a close second. All movies that were not appreciated in their time but are now much BELOVED!
Love this movie! I remember at the time, Oprah did an interview with Goldie and Meryl during filming. I had the impression that Goldie was the funny actress and Meryl the serious actress at the time. That interview had me in stitches, Meryl(!) was sooo funny that Oprah lost it, and she even made a (lovelingly) joke about how boring Goldie was. And yes, Goldie said that she was a bit boring and that Meryl was the funny one. I totally re-branded Meryl in my mind after that. Ages: Streep 43, Hawn 47, Rossellini 40.
Speaking of Joan Crawford and Bette Davis, if you've never seen _Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?_ it's definitely one to put on the list. It's a psychological thriller with horror overtones. Bette Davis's performance is particularly disturbing. Goldie Hawn worked with Ingrid Bergman in _Cactus Flower_ and later with Bergman's daughter, Isabella Rossellini. BTW, _Cactus Flower_ (1969) is a delightful romantic farce, and Hawn's Best Supporting Actress Oscar.
I felt the effects quickly became the object of the film, like "Look what we can do!" The physical humor was interesting, broad but well done, I'd have like it better if it was toned down a bit. It's fine. I've suggested a more recent intentionally cheesy film before, "The Spirit" from 2008. The critics hated it because evidently they never read the source material by Will Eisner. The cast has Samuel L. Jackson as the villain The Octopus and Scarlett Johansson as Silken Floss with Eva Mendes as Sand Saref but in the lead role is Gabriel Macht. It's filmed like "The 300" or "Sin City". You'll like it.
A lot of people don't know this, but this film was originally conceived for an episode of the series Tales From the Crypt. Robert Zemeckis worked on that also.
I just watched the mortuary collection. Which was so excellent. And It’s pretty new but it has a nostalgic vibe! Although if you want a real old one try THE BABY from 1972. Which is bizarre but oddly compelling
I don't think I've seen this since it first came out, but it's been lots of fun revisiting it and seeing all the cast play against type. And if you're going to do horror comedy, you need to go waaaay over the top to make it work. My yardstick for that is Theatre of Blood - which I think you'd like - but this one has a lot of goofy charm.
Just seeing you watch the credits and discover who is in this was worth clicking on for! lol. My favorite line is when Goldie calls Meryl a bad actress, lol. Can you believe it that this and maybe The Devil Wears Prada are just about the only reaction videos I can find for a Meryl Streep movie? Not even "Sophie's Choice" which has "reaction video material" written all over it! (i know YOU'VE seen it, Jen!). Anyways, it was great seeing these guys play against type, especially Streep who, at the time, had been known for a string of heavy, dramatic, Oscar-nominated characters, most of whom spoke in various accents. "She Devil" and then this movie was a great attempt to branch out, even though neither movie was well-received at the time. Also happy for Goldie! She just kept working into the 1990s, good for her. She was 47 when this movie was released, which back then meant even more than it does now. (Meryl was 42. I always forget that Goldie was an Oscar winning actress and a huge TV star when Meryl was still at Yale Drama School!) Thanks for such a fun revisit, Jen, really enjoyed watching this with you!
Hey Jen, the scene where Meryl's breast gets more, um, perky (9:48), is an assistant off camera who...manually moved it up. lol Someone Meryl must have felt very close to, I assume!
The fake musical in the beginning (Songbird) is supposed to be an adaptation of Tennessee Williams' Sweet Bird of Youth, which is about (wait for it) an aging actress obsessed with getting old and being marginalized! It's so funny. I feel like this movie's time has come! The trailers at the time emphasized the effects more than the humor and comments on obsession with youth, so I always felt that's why it didn't make as much money as it should have!
Did you catch Jim Morrison, Jen? You mentioned Elvis, Marilyn Monroe, James Dean, and Andy Warhol, but I wasn't sure if you caught Jim Morrison of The Doors at the pool. lol
@@44excalibur having love the movie , and watching it hundred of times , I realized i never looked to see if Garbo was at the party since Lisle mentions the “ I vant to be alone.” Reference. Anyways, sure enough, there she was standing by Marilyn
Notice the whole was right in the center of the stomach, which would mean that the spine was destroyed. Yet, the woman was able to keep standing up as if she still had a spine.
I'm writing that Universal Studios should give Death Becomes Her a special Blu-ray release that would include all 25 deleted scenes that were cut from the film and including the film's original Switzerland alternate ending as special features.
Goldie and Meryl were 46 and 43 when they filmed Death Becomes Her (1992). Bruce was 37. Isabella was 38 or 39. Madeline was right on when she guessed Lisle’s age as “38…28…23!”
I'm a little late but this movie was made in a weird time for Meryl Streep. In the first half of the 90s, she did several comic films as a response to audiences evidently getting tired of her relentlessly good acting. I think it was 1988's "A Cry in the Dark" that did people in - it was the one where she said, "A dingo ate my baby" in a perfect Australian accent. People were actually making fun of her accents and talent. Weird. So she did a number of comedies for a while in which she either died (this one, and "Defending Your Life") or was at least self-destructive ("Postcards from the Edge"). Oddly enough, it worked. By the later 90s, she could do dramas again. People forgave her for being good. Seems weird today, where she shows up at an awards show and people treat her like a goddess, but there was a time when people were annoyed by her talent and Oscar nominations.
Joan Crawfords rival was Bette Davis. Robert Zemeckis is a director known for "Back To The Future" (1-3), "Cast Away", "Forest Gump", "Used Cars", and a variety of other well known movies
Watching your intro all I could think was, “Ooooo, girl, you are in for a TREAT!!!” lol ETA: I frequently see confusion as to what exactly Helen is snacking on when she’s at her heaviest, all holed up in her appointment, rewatching Madelyn’s death scene in that movie… they’re tuba of cake frosting/icing. Even though they’re still very much around today, they seemed to be *much* more prevalent back in the 90s. (Perhaps that’s just my personal experience but I’m inclined to think not as a LOT of reactors are _hella_ confused by what it is. The section for it in the grocery store has DEF shrunk quite a bit over the years as well!) To be fair to “big Hellen” I too found that shit DELICIOUS as a kid! lol. My dad used to bake a lot of boxed cakes and used those as frosting on them. There always seemed to be a good bit more in the tub than needed so almost always had 1 or 2 containers of excess in our fridge. Thus, from like 10 to 19, I would indulge in a nice, big spoonful of frosting every few days. 🤷🏼
I love how this movie shows a very big negative of imortality. A lot of people don't think what about if a building falls on me? A flood? Housefire? Mankind ends and only i remain forever alone? What i'm depressed no joy or want to self terminate?
Love this one! You might like Witches of Eastwick (dark humor) and The Crow (not so much). And I think the castle is the set from Wizard of Oz, which I am sure there were many little Easter eggs in this movie. Parkour! lol
So there's a film poster featuring Meryl's character and "Michael Caine" from a thriller. I think Caine makes a sorta Easter egg appearance somewhere in the movie, but I'm not sure where. I think he may be the disguised killer in the brief "movie" scene.
YES! I grew up with this one! I was confused about it. Mixed reactions. It was funny and scary when I was a kid! And yes Overboard is great too! Goldie Hawn made some great movies. "I HAVE A HOLE N MY STOMACH!" 18:46 "I'll just be up stairs" Thats me right there. lol
There’s an EXCELLENT chance that someone has already answered this question for you (Especially so since it’s been 2+ years since you released this video!) _and_ they probably did an even better job of answering it than I’m about to. BUT I already did the research and the math so I’m posting it. LOL. Anyway, these were their ages when Death Becomes Her first premiered. So I’d assume that they were all a mix of 0-2 years younger while filming, depending on how long before the release date they did so as well as how long all of it took to film! So, as of Death Becomes Her’s release date of July 31st 1992, the three main actors ages were… Goldie Hawn: 46 Meryl Streep: 43 Bruce Willis: 37 So there ya have it!! On the off chance that no one has answered this question for you in the past 2+ years, I certainly hope that your curiosity has been quelled! lol (Not that you couldn’t have just looked it up yourself in that amount of time had you _really_ began to wonder! lol)
Caine didn’t have a cameo. It was an old movie of his they used and put Streep in it. And hey always referred to each other as Mad and Hell. Another classic comedy horror movie is Young Frankenstein.
1:55 Are you talking about the entire film or the musical in which Madeline stars, in the beginning of the film? In any case, the film's story is an original script and as for the musical it is supposed to be a musical version of a Tennessee Williams play, the "Sweet Bird of Youth", in which Madeline I'm guessing is supposed to portray Alexandra del Lago.
The more I watch this movie, the more I love it. Definitely deserves a place on my favorite movies list. Please react to "The Prince of Tides" with Barbra Streisand and Nick Nolte. Excellent movie.
The special effects in this were considered pretty groundbreaking at the time. They do look a bit dated now. But its such a great movie. Hawn and Streep just destroy their parts
If they hadn't DIED after taking the potion, they would have stayed young and beautiful forever, like Lisa "the 71 year old" and all the famous people at the party.
I love this movie but come to think about it why did Ernest get off so easy I mean to be honest he wasn't a good guy he was the one hopping from Woman to Woman that's pretty much the only criticism I have other than that I love this movie

Anyway, these were their ages when Death Becomes Her first premiered. So I’d assume that they were all a mix of 0-2 years younger while filming, depending on how long before the release date they did so as well as how long all of it took to film!
So, as of Death Becomes Her’s release date of July 31st 1992, the three main actors ages were…
Goldie Hawn: 46
Meryl Streep: 43
Bruce Willis: 37
So there ya have it!! On the off chance that no one has answered this question for you in the past 2+ years, I certainly hope that your curiosity has been quelled! lol (Not that you couldn’t have just looked it up yourself in that amount of time had you _really_ began to wonder! lol)
For every time Jen says "Oh my~" she loses 100$ lol
Great choice! this one is so good!
Caine didn’t have a cameo. It was an old movie of his they used and put Streep in it. And hey always referred to each other as Mad and Hell. Another classic comedy horror movie is Young Frankenstein.
I’ve heard a remake is in discussion with Kate Hudson, Anne Hathaway and Lady Gaga.
Oh man! That would be amazing!
Goldie was about 46 when making this movie, Meryl would have been around 41.
Goldie hawn was 47 years old in this movie
Bruce was 37 years old and Meryl was 48
Betty Davis is who you were thinking of.
Yes! That’s it!
OH I WATCH MOVIE ALL TIME IN 90S HAD VHS OF THIS GREAT MOVIE
1:55 Are you talking about the entire film or the musical in which Madeline stars, in the beginning of the film?
In any case, the film's story is an original script and as for the musical it is supposed to be a musical version of a Tennessee Williams play, the "Sweet Bird of Youth", in which Madeline I'm guessing is supposed to portray Alexandra del Lago.
The more I watch this movie, the more I love it. Definitely deserves a place on my favorite movies list. Please react to "The Prince of Tides" with Barbra Streisand and Nick Nolte. Excellent movie.
You HAVE to watch “Return of the Living Dead” from 1985.
Robert Zemeckis directed this and Back to the Future
definitely a funny movie with a touch of creepy. Great to see you catch the past celeb cameos at the party.
Yeah it was super fun! Thanks for watching!
Meryl was to Harvey Weinstein what Captain America's shield was to him.
Hope you young people seeing it 4 the 1st time is truly getting the moral of the story..there IS a moral
Who says I’m young?
It was filmed in Los Angelas he House is called greystone mansion
goldie was 47 when she made the movie
Meryl Streep and Roseanne Barr star in the movie She Devil. You'd love it!!! This was such a great movie. Loved your reaction!
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for watching 🎬❤️
Just subscribed🤗 hi from Puerto Rico
Thanks for subscribing!
Joan Crawford and Bette Davis, Jen. 😉
YES! That's it!
I think Isabella Rossellini WAS 38 when she made this film so Meryl Streep guessing her age at 38 was an inside joke.
The special effects in this were considered pretty groundbreaking at the time. They do look a bit dated now. But its such a great movie. Hawn and Streep just destroy their parts
Highly recommend She Devil!
Have you seen the Ash vs Evil Dead series?
Thanks for the video!! See you later!! Stay safe.😉
Thanks for watching! You too!
I love this movie
If they hadn't DIED after taking the potion, they would have stayed young and beautiful forever, like Lisa "the 71 year old" and all the famous people at the party.
If you are a Goldie Hawn fan check out Cactus Flower (1969)
This movie is a 💎.
The first few minutes suck, but once this film takes off, it takes off; all the way to the end.
If you haven't seen it, check out meryl streep in the river wild.
I love this damn movie
Meryl Streep & Goldie Hawn Are So Beautiful Gorgeous Ladies

This not a horror movie, which you must know by now. Now you have to watch Hellraiser to make up for it ;P

Agreed! Thanks for watching!
9:43 Bottom's up!
I love this movie but come to think about it why did Ernest get off so easy I mean to be honest he wasn't a good guy he was the one hopping from Woman to Woman that's pretty much the only criticism I have other than that I love this movie
22:58 And Greta Garbo, yes.
