  • One of the most common flaws in young swings! Hard to fix so be patient with players. In this video I describe what the "dragging back elbow" looks like and the causes!
Lack of strength, bad sequence, and fear of swinging and missing causes players to get into this very unnatural/weak position.

Huge difference between turing the knob to the ball and pushing the knob to the ball. Great point

I used this drill along with your compression ball tutorial and slow turning while stretching a rubber exercise band to essentially cure my 8 year old's "bat drag." I appreciate you managing our expectations realistically. You are absolutely correct, it took about 2 months of drills and practice 5 times a week. My son learned a valuable lesson about hard work and perseverance paying off. Thank you so much for your videos, Josh. They're gold!!

Hey coach..mine started bad habit of long swing (casting) at early age cause he was so small and "felt" the long swing helped him! We OVER corrected it at age 11 and caused him to be super snug with back elbow and it does get ahead of hands! He dont roll over or pop up cause he has power to keep the barrel from dropping below his hands! His bat slides down beside his shoulder and he gets "on path" super early...yet with elbow ahead! He can barrel up chest high but even middle mid ones he has to adjust and then he late! HIS ISSUE is follow through...he slices the ball up to damg near 20ft even if he does barrel it up good! Understand its "palmup/palmdown at contact but his top hand is so rotational around his body at extension that his barrel "cuts" at the ball! I seen the basketball off tee drill, the tire one,and also hitting heavy balls so will try that! He is now a freshman varsity catcher (also pitches) but the senior he beat out DH for him cause of this issue! The "bug" came through at his 12 yearold year which he was also 6th grader in middle school team so that prolonged the fix of his problem! Well to be honest it wasn't "shown" as much in middle school ball cause bat speed was as much tryn catch up to 80+ mph pitching! He can hit offspeed backside good and thats where he get doubles in gap to help hide the issue up until state tournament foe the 14 yearold at end of lastyear! If any other "tricks" or fixes i should check out it be greatly appreciated! Also i LOVED the "feel vs real" and how ya used "over exaggeration" term...been using it to both myboys their whole baseball life! Oldest graduated in 2021 and was also a catcher but he hit as DH before getting that spot and his only issue was his hips exploded leaving his upper body behind so then at that point it was mostly upper body swing..almost like he was fooling himself timing wise even on fastballs!

At what age should you expect the dragging back elbow to go away, if a player practices at least 30 minutes a day? Is it unrealistic to expect a 9 year-old to break this habit?
