Great question and the answer to that question is based on a few factors mainly how much and how often you shoot. Reloading equipment is a bit of an investment so you definitely won’t see any difference right away. We’re talking upwards of $1000 to get started correctly with prices on today’s equipment. I’ve been reloading for years and I can make 9mm for less than $.10 a round. Average price right now is about $.25 a round. I can make .223/5.56 for less than $.25 a round and the average if I buy is around $.50 a round. It’s also a bit time consuming so you need to take that in to consideration as well. Some people think it’s worth paying extra for the convenience.
Keep an eye on local stuff. Facebook, craiglist etc. Plenty of people that have no interest in doing it after getting it from relatives or tried to get into it and then changed their mind after buying some and want to recoup money on it
My first rifle in 1966...initially used Norma ammo...expensive, so started reloading with hand tools made from Brass and Malleable Iron plumbing fittings...screw-up system...worked quite well if slow. Reasonably accurate loads from Bench...still have the Carbine ( Inland), but now load with RCBS Bench Press and Dies...much easier... DocAV
Kinda puts into perspective of the people of logistics, sure soldiers win battles but logistics win wars. It a wonder how we even got to this amount of technology. Plus all of these ammo, clips or mags are loaded by hand so it a complicated system of even using all the guns or weaponry we have today.
I’ve decided I’m buying a reloading kit. Never done it before, I’ve already chosen what to load first. .223 just to make sure I get it down right before I blow something old up, .303, 8x57, .30 Carbine, 7.5x55, 6.5x52, .300 Wby Mag (30-06 power for just general non barrel burning shooting) and maybe some 7.62x51 NATO pressure hunting loads for my Ishapores. Poor babies haven’t gotten much love since Covid
Looks good man!! Im a reloader as well, but never the .30. I suppose once all my factory rounds have been shot, and i have tons of brass, i may buy the dies. Are there different types of bullets available, or just the ball type?
There are different bullets but I use the FMJ because they are cheap and here in Canada this gun is Restricted because of the barrel length so I can’t legally hunt with it unless I put a new barrel on it. I can only shoot it at a range and can’t shoot it on my property even.
My father was a M.P. in WW11 he had in his dresser draw an old German wallet. It had a picture of him on a motorcycle with a M1 carbine in a gun case on the side. He had another picture of him and another young GI kneeing next to a stack of dead enemy soldiers. War is not PRETTY.
The gun manufacturers need to start building more weapons in this caliber. It’s a great intermediate round that’s still readily available and not that expensive. I don’t understand why they aren’t making stuff for this ammo.
It’s a shame there aren’t more firearms using 30 Carbine. It would be a more popular cartridge, especially for self defense, if the M1 Carbine wasn’t the only production rifle to use it.
Only cheaper if you shoot a lot and plan on reloading. Could take you a couple years to make up the cost since the initial investment for reloading is easily $700+
