Since Sam upon his introduction was portrayed as the biggest and strongest engine on Sodor at the time you would expect him to think highly of himself and look down at others (Not mentioning any names) but I was surprised how he was still one of the nicest characters to bear such a status.
Edit: He would still hold the record since Deltics are never seen, shown or mentioned in the show Unfortunately.
a "Gentle Giant" personality i like to call it
Deltics? A steam engine that big could kill him.
Such a big steam engine would be picky to curves, therefore it's still not good as deltics. Also you can use a pair of deltics if you really need that amount of traction.
Well sam is based on an articulate engine and not a solid frame or duplex. Therefore sam would still be better than 2 deltics
He’s based on the 2nd most powerful steam engine ever built, he could probably outpull 3 or 4 Deltics
Best part is: They only used a fraction of Sam's power. If it wasn't for how utterly ridiculous the length of the train would be, pretty sure he would've hauled all the materials needed in one trip.
On that note, a meme I found some time ago:
Thomas: "Sam, what's that screaming noise I hear?"
Sam: "Oh that's the British Loading Gauge crying in agony from my 389 metric tons, Thomas."
Damn. I told you the tracks and the roundhouses here aren't big enough to accept you, Sam!
Don't you mean *I M P E R I A L ?*
@@windusbindo Hey now, don't shoot the messenger, I'm just quoting the meme.

Despite not liking Big World Big Adventures I was actually surprised by the fact that Sam returned, it was nice seeing him again even though it bothered me a bit that Thomas didn’t even seem to remember Sam.
He probably forget that Sam was in sodor
@@curious5887for real! It bugged me he didn’t say hi
I'm honestly surprised Murdoch and Neville weren't in this, especially Murdoch considering his class holds a record for hauling the heaviest train in Britain. But this video was very interesting to watch, keep up the amazing work! :)
Gordon wasn't even in it.
Actually surprisingly enough they don’t even make it to to lower five (I was surprised too)
Murdoch/BR Class 9F: 39,667 lbf (176.45 kN)
Henry/LMS Stanier/Black 5: 25,455 lbf (113.23 kN)
Neville/BR Class Q1: 30,080 lbf (133.80 kN)
And to be fair the first engine he listed was an American engine so ofc they have stupid amounts of strength compared to BR locomotives
@@ItsDaJax
Gordon/A1/A3(or A0): 29,835 lbf (132.71 kN)
A3: 30,362 lbf (135.06 kN)
I’m not actually sure what to base him on considering he’s not exactly either of them since he is a Prototype of these classes (Hence the title of A0) but I’d give him about 134-33 since he’s the prototype of these classes.
@@ItsDaJaxHe's a passenger engine, let him go please 😅

Never thought Caitlin was stronger than Connor in terms of tractive effort, damned, but the fact that you put American anthems on Hank is very funny yet fitting and catchy
Also, Caitlin did pulled freight train, specifically Percy mail trains and Henry freight train in the episode 'Calm Down Caitlin', so her strength isn't entirely elusive, and she seems pulled it smoothly, also, what is the anthem on Hank list?
Caitlin is based off P7A Pacific while Connor is based off a J3 Hudson. Caitlin has 50k lbs of tractive effort compared to the less beefed up Hudsons having 41k so it kinda makes sense
I’m sad that Gordon, Henry, & Hiro weren’t on the list.
Fun fact: I'm fairly certain Ferdinand is the only (American) geared steam engine representative in the franchise. He's a Climax-class, quite a rarity among already rare engines.
But that always leaves me wondering: why weren't any other geared steamies represented? Thanks to the power of CGI modeling, a member or two of the Shay/Willamette-class engines could have been easily included. Their unique design and incredible gripping power (they have climbed grades of almost 20%) would have made them welcome additions.
Perhaps there would have been need to clean up some congested forests in the mountainous regions of Sodor. The Shays were custom-designed for this exact scenario, hauling men and equipment into a rugged and mountainous area, and bringing them and freshly cut logs back. Seeing one or two with their majestic whistles and enormous smoke outputs would have made my day.
Funnily enough, Ferdinand's fellow engines (Bash and Dash, I believe) are based off of the "Falk" engine from the Bear Harbour Lumber co., which also ran a bizarre geared engine with a front-mounted bull gear. There's a video of it on RUclips somewhere, I'll see if I can find the link.
Yeah I figured the Virginian locomotive was gonna get it. The kind of grades and loads they had to tackle are massively impressive to this day.
Although I did want to ask about that electric locomotive in The Great Race. I do remember hearing that the Peel Godred line enlisted some of them, in part, due to their handling of steeper gradients. Think its to do with their better power output.
Too bad sodor(britain) is mostly not electrified.
The Peel Godred branch is indeed electrified because of the grades, but it’s not quite as simple as electrics being more powerful. Electric (and diesel electric) locomotives make the most tractive effort at low speeds, while steam and diesel hydraulics only make peak tractive effort at top speed, and it’s that starting effort advantage that has made diesel electric the world standard.
EDIT: The tractive effort for Etinne’s basis, SNCF BB 9004, doesn’t seem to be posted anywhere despite the engine being preserved. However, the BB 9200 class that followed them had a peak of ~300kN - I don’t blame the creators for leaving him out in lieu of an official hard number though.
Sam: C&O 1309 class 3
Big boy: are you challanging me? (Proceeds to pull 100+ cars)
As a resident of Ottawa, I got the chance to see the U4A 6400 that inspired Vinnie at the National Science Museum here. His real basis is enormous!! And if I recall correctly, I even got to go in his cab
Wow
I feel like Murdoch should've been on this list. Along with a few others, such as Gordon, Hiro, etc.
Actually, he only has 176 KN
Murdoch, Hurricane, Derek and Hiro almost made the list.
@@henriquefernandesbreves6003 Murdoch?
@@CosmicOffical What stopped them from making the list?
@@joeleboeuf probably not having enough tractive effort
Funny thing is that Sam is considered a small articulated engine. One engine that would be amazing to see in this universe is the Big Boy class 4-8-8-4, 300 psi superheated steam engines. In other words the UP 4000-4024
0:47 idk why but this scene is one of my favorites in T&F. James, Percy and Thomas ascending the mountain together. It’s actually kinda beautiful.
Mostly I always assumed more longer and larger tender engines like Gordon, Henry, Spencer, Flying Scotsman, Hiro, Murdoch, Sam, Merlin, etc to be stronger engines or diesels like Bear, Derek and BoCo to pull longer trains whether its trucks or coaches.
I knew that Catlin was going to be in this list because the only time I can remember her pulling trucks was in "Calm down Catlin" where she pulled the mail train and The Flying Kipper in 1 night.
Thomas did pull longer goods trains in "Journey beyond Sodor" and in the BWBA movie.
Spencer only pulled trucks in "Hero of the rails" and "The beast of Sodor".
Percy did pull the express twice. 1st was with Thomas and Duck in "Triple header" and 2nd was in "Dowager Hatt's busy day".
Samson did the same thing to in "Samson at your service".
I thought Henry was gonna get a place in the top 10 because he pushed a super long and heavy train with Hiro on the front, Hiro broke down due to using a bad coal... Henry was using the same coal and pushed this mighty train including Hiro up Gordon's hill... What a strengh
This is interesting Hiro is 2-8-2 which is usually stronger than Henry's 4-6-0.
@@phoenixarian8513Right in the comment... "Hiro broke down due to using a bad coal." If he was working, then yes he would be, he's as fast as Spencer, too.
@@ItsDaJax I mean the consist designed for Hiro to haul might be too heavy for Henry. After all Henry has a pair of driving wheels less.
Also: This is steam age and for these rank of engines the train won't be very heavy. I guess that's 500 tons at most. However if Henry wants to rescue this train he needs to also pull Hiro away...yep the weight of Hiro can't be ignored.
The mix of the proper radio voice and jokes that come out of nowhere is exactly how this content should be delivered
If the UP Big Boy 4014 appeared, he would be the strongest, especially that time the Articulated 4-8-8-4 pushed a stalled freight train along with his own excursion train up a hill
Funny thing is that if you ever did cover the main sodor engines' real life basis, you will discover contradicting tractive effort from what the fandom really thought, such as James' basis (Lyr Class 28) having 27,406 lbf (121.9 kN) compare to Henry (Black five) with 25,455 lbf (113.23 kN). (Damn Henry's weak). I could go on more with what I discovered but I don't to make this comment too long. Just thought it be appropriate time to share this weird fact.
Yup! It's very surprisingly what the facts are.
Despite this, the LMS classified the L&YR Class 28s as 3F and the Black Fives as 5MT (5P5F).
However, if you want to use a much more appropriate alternative basis for James, look no further than the GCR 9J (LNER J11), physical appearance, tractive effort and all.
Poor Henry, 😢
damn the fact that emily wasn't showed here in these list even tho she managed to stop caitlyn when her brakes failed and also enduring a heavy flatbeds where Donald and dougles were fighting dang she is underratted
Absolute banger! I love the visuals, narration and presentation. Combined with the fascinating premise makes a truly staggering vid. Consider me impressed (especially as I know how long it took to create this lol)

Sam is a BEAST!! If they added a 4014 Union Pacific Big Boy character, they would be the strongest by far. Sucks that we never got a character modeled after that train
That's what he is.
@@ItsDaJax no Sam is a 2-6-6-6 AG “Blue Ridge” class steam locomotive
True
according to HYCE the NPR/SPR and DM&IR YELLOWSTONE ( Whyte Notation 2-8-8-4) is stronger than the UP BIG BOYS/Wasatch (Whyte Notation 4-8-8-4)
2:08 fun fact: the tender from J1 number 5313 actully survived. it is at steamtown Nationial historic site in scraation pa.
3:06 Those surviving engines are 1361 and 3750. 3750 is rusting at starsburg Pa, whille 1361 is at altonna getting a new life at chance (being restroed to working order, so you might see one of these run again.
12:57 The railway wasnt the only using heck they didint ivent the 2-6-6-6 wheel layout, that was actully the chespake and ohio railway. 1604 and 1601 are still around, but none of the blue ridges survived into present day.
Ah yes steamtown the home for the most generic steam whistle of all
Belongings to 3254
Remember that steam engine and diesel hydraulics (Bear, Diesel 10) make peak tractive effort at speed (the exact speed depends on design), while diesel electrics (Boco, Class 40, Spamcan) and electric locomotives can make full tractive effort at 0MPH. They can’t sustain it indefinitely or once they get moving due to how electric motors work, but that makes them even better at starting trains than the peak tractive effort alone implies.
Also something to consider: the Class 66 which does most UK freight duties these days has a peak tractive effort of 406kN, and the 66/6 subclass has 467kN. Your typical American freight diesel like the SD70ACe or ES44AC meanwhile has ~810kN, and can get close to 1000kN in heavyweight versions.
YIKES THATS A LOT
Is anybody not going to talk about the fact that Neville (133.8 kN) and James (121.9 kN) are stronger than Henry (113.2 kN) in terms of tractive effort despite the size difference (although I doubt they had better adhesion). Plus, I feel Gordon is supposed to be an unrebuilt Gresley A1 (132.7 kN) rather than A3 and if that's the case Neville would be slightly stronger than he is! Plus, not all the Gresley A3s had the same power output due to differing cylinder diameters.
Furthermore, the reason there are so many diesels in this list is because they tend to have a very high maximum *starting* tractive effort but they lose force very quickly when gaining speed probably much more than a steam engine. In reality, the Class 40s were revealed to be subpar and underpowered when compared to the express steams engines at the time (such as Gresley A3s and A4s) despite having larger starting tractive effort.
A more appropriate basis for James would be the GCR 9J/LNER J11 (though unintentional, it is coincidentally more fitting given the illustrations' depiction of James), which has a tractive effort of up to 97.68 kN. Still strong enough for mixed-traffic duties, but at least not to point where he somehow overpowers Henry, even by a slight margin.
@@LazyOldFusspot_3428 I agree however I forgot to mention that Awdry has give James larger driving wheels which does knock down his power a bit below Henry’s and I think it’s more appropriate especially when he is described as a mixed traffic engine.
I don't think a lot of the locos are canon to their real life counterparts... Thomas wouldn't have a branch line if that were the case.

Nice video man, I watched a couple of videos just yesterday and you earned my sub. By any chance if you accept ideas for future videos, could you do an "all characters dead/scrapped/missing in T&F Franchise" ???
I was waiting for this
I don't think comparing the power of these engines solely through tractive effort does it justice.
For many of these engines, there is a difference in their designs. Some engines (Murdoch, for instance) were born and built as heavy freight engines, while others (Such as Hank) were designed as passenger engines.
Some engines will likely be able to haul more freight, while others can provide a faster and smoother ride for their passengers.
Comparing the strength of a passenger engine with the strength of a freight engine is like apples and oranges. Both are really good at their designed roles but wouldn't do as well with much else.
As an example, the A3s had a power rating of 7P6F. This meant that they could perform most passenger work, but they would want something stronger for heavy freight.
It takes more raw power to haul a heavy freight train, but that same power without modification would give passengers a rough ride.
With Vinnie having 233kns, it's known that US Steam Locomotives, with the Union Pacific 4014, having 602.18 kilonewtons/602,180 newtons/135,375 pounds-force of Tractive Effort
Great work! I really thought I was going to see Spencer, Neville, Shane or Frieda.

Who is the weakest character in thomas and friends
Hiro, the JNR class D51, has a tractive effort of 118kn.
Henry, a Stanier Black Five, has a tractive effort of 116kn.
Gordon, a Gresley A1, has a tractive effort of 133kn.
In Henry's Hero, Hiro breaks down with a heavy steel train after getting bad coal. Henry, similarly burning bad coal, managed to push both the heavy cars *AND HIRO* over a big hill. This, much like "Super Rescue" in the Railway Series, was Henry's strongest moment.
Gordon is a strong engine too, capable of pulling as many as ten fully loaded BR Class 1 Composite coaches at speeds nearing 100mph.
I'm surprised that there was never a Big Boy locomotive in this series.
That is probably because a Big Boy would pulverize, weaken, and destroy/would not fit through any of Sodor’s tracks, bridges, and tunnels respectively. The sheer amount of damage a character based on a Big Boy would cause (regardless of if it was intentional or unintentional) might be enough to cause Sodor to experience a local economic recession from the train’s weight alone. And that is not including how the Big Boy would quite possibly/literally tear up the tracks if he tries to move. :þ.
