    I have a long love of military bands. At secondary school in the UK, my music teacher was Lt. Col. Sam Rhodes, former Senior Director of the Guards Division, Director of Music the Scots Guards. My paternal grandfather was a military bandsman with the Bedfordshire Regiment. The first concert I went to was at the Royal Military School of Music at Kneller Hall. My best man was a bandsman who trained at Kneller Hall. At college, a fellow student was the son of the Director of Kneller Hall, Major Trevor Sharp. I was also friends with the Director of Music of the Welsh Guards. Some people will compare the USMC bands with UK military bands. They have a different style but I love them all.

    The trombone solo in this recording is the best trombone performance I have heard. When he was asked what he missed most about not being president, the first President Bush reportedly said, “the Marine Band playing at dinner.”

    The members of the US Armed Forces "senior bands", and the US Marine Drum and Bugle Corps, which are stationed in Washington, DC, are professional musicians. As many here have noted, they represent their respective Service with distinction. They out Broadway, Broadway, and played klezmer like players in "Fiddler On the Roof". Thanks to everyone of you Marines who chose to "join up" and give us this top-notch entertainment at the touch of our computer's keyboard.

    People of the world, get out and hear some live music! Be safe depending on where you live, but things are slowly returning to normal. Hooray!
    And when school starts again, support music education and go to hear what they are playing. You will be surprised how well they do and your applause will be much appreciated. If you are near a college or university, music of a very high quality is out there for you to enjoy!

      One of the community bands I play in (the Heart of Texas Concert Band) missed only last summer's performances. Fortunately we secured a rehearsal site large enough for us to socially distance, and we're playing to significantly smaller audiences. We've got a youtube channel so our fans can hear us even if they're not there in person!

    Made all of wood, Wolftrap burned down some years back. But they rebuilt it and thank God for that. It has some of the best acoustics of an outdoor theater possible. And behind the seats is plenty of grass to sit and enjoy. But of coarse, there is no smoking anymore.
    When playing Carmen Dragon's arrangement of America the Beautiful in Oceanside,Ca. with the First Marine Division Band as a Euphonium player after Desert Storm, it was an absolutely packed house. We played at the bandshell on the beach and every available seat was taken while the little kids sat down in front. There is a few bars solo for Euphonium in the beginning and as soon as I finished playing, a damn bald eagle straffed the crowd. They went absolutely nuts thinking it was planned. It was not. Now, we deployed with the rest of the division as our roll in wartime is perimeter security for the commanding general. At the time that was BGen. Mike Myatt. And no, he didn't like staying in the rear with the gear Close to Thanksgiving we actually set up NBC showers (used for decontamination) to get a shower as president Bush was going to be at our position on Thanksgiving. I was on guard at the control center when, at night in the pitch black, I saw someone coming towards the gate. I stopped them and he didn't know the password. 🤦‍♂️ I had to go out and identify him, but only after I put him on his knees in the dirt with his hands over his head faced away from the gate. When I got close enough to identify him it was BGen. Myatt in nothing but a towel and his boots. He was not happy. But he told me if I did that tomorrow I might be promoted. I told him he could do that now. Then he said no. "I gotta go get another damn shower !!" I reminded him of the password that HE HAD SET. I got off at 0400 and was back on at 0600. An hour later 3 choppers landed and the first man out was Commandant Al Gray. It was a hell of a 2 days.

    What is the protocol for a band/orchestra playing the national anthem? Are they supposed to stand or not? I had this argument during the rehearsal for my high school graduation. I said that the school's orchestra was supposed to stand, but the teacher in charge of the graduation ceremony made them stay seated.

    • @roopysdm
      @roopysdm 3 года назад +2

      No specified protocol for Marine Corps bands and depending on the venue, either make sense. The important thing is that, in overall presentation, proper honor is given during performance - in practice, we’ll sit or stand at “attention” (rigid posture with heels together).

    • @purrdiggle1470

      Really?? No protocol? I have NEVER played the national anthem sitting down. Never, not once. I would be very interested in seeing a Marine band that does. Or any military band. Not only that, it is a musical sin to practice it outside. Never done.

    Great concert displaying the great musicianship of the players, particularly providing opportunities to play material that can't be used in the routine duties of the band, for example, all of the solo performances (that trom solo from Russel Sharp is incredible!). However, while comparisons are odious, the concert from the British equivalent performers from the Royal Albert Hall leaces this concert for dead. Admittedly they also included strings and choir, and they were able to indulge in spectacular staging and lighting, but programming was distinctly more adventurous. (Personal note; I can't take to the long white skirts worn here by the women - I guess there's some traditional reason for this design choice.rather than a more modern approach of trousers-type garb)

    • @catrionam.mackirnan6646
      @catrionam.mackirnan6646 3 года назад

      Winter dress uniform for them is red tunics, black trousers, or long black skirts. Summer dress uniform substitutes white trousers or long white skirts.

    • @bryangl1
      @bryangl1 3 года назад

      @@catrionam.mackirnan6646 Thank you Catriona. It's just my personal taste, but the skirts, to me, look old fashioned. But as I said, I'm sure tradition plays its part also (although, traditionally, there would be no women players - thank God some traditions get displaced!)

    • @catrionam.mackirnan6646
      @catrionam.mackirnan6646 3 года назад

      @@bryangl1 It's a UNIFORM. Old-fashioned has nothing to do with it. With the uniforms changing, now, to more of a unisex approach (which is good in some ways and not in others -- I would have loved to have the dress blue "crackerjack" uniform available to me when I was in the Navy, but it was not approved for women at that time), I'm not sure what is now prescribed for women for what is called the Mess Dress uniform, but it was a formal, pleated long skirt with Mess Dress short tunic. It's a really sharp-looking uniform, but only for very formal occasions. This formal band uniform appears to be based on it.

    • @bryangl1
      @bryangl1 3 года назад

      @@catrionam.mackirnan6646 Hi Catriona. Again, thank you. I understand what you are saying about it being a uniform but the very fact that styles are changing (ie, the "unisex" approach) means that styles (designs, fashions - choose preferred term) are changing and so it is a change in "fashion". Simply, to my eye. (and this is just my tastes) the skirts are more of a passing era and in that sense, of an older fashion. At the same time I understand your comment about the "unisex" approach; in one way, it's making for a greater uniformity in style and trousers can be more practical than skirts, but it's also removing the female identity. While we certainly want equality between the sexes, that doesn't mean we should lose the differences.

    The performance is a little under par. It/s a shame the audio pickup isn't as good. The high end is lacking and the bottom end is boomy and not as tight as it would be at the performance. And unless you are amplifying the band let's place the mics further away so as allow the instruments to blend as if sitting in the audience. Plua the mix is almost mono in presentation.

    Its a shame the trombonist had so many issues with the Blue Bells of Scotland. He should have slowed it down a bit and maybe gone back in the green room and warmed up his lips a little more. He missed to many notes and his tonguing and slurring were not as good as one would expect. In fact the entire band was rather sloppy that night with to many clunkers and intonation problems in all sections. Not their best for sure. And some times I get frustrated with the Colonel for rushing.
    I dislike classical trained voices with operatic leanings trying to sing popular music from any period. Just like I don't like pop singers trying to sing classical music. Neither do well outside there chose fields of discipline. I hate to be tough on the band, but I know they can do significantly better. There are other presentations on you tube that prove it along with other recordings available for purchase. I'll give the trombonist a 7.5 and the band an 8.5 for this concert.
