    James outstanding review on bike along with good technical explanations 👍 I almost bought this bike for this winter but opted for 2021 Rocky Mountain Blizzard 30 for extra $250 CAD ($190 USD). Blizzard comes with shinano SLX 12 speed derailer (10-51t 🤤), better brakes (and larger 180mm rotors), 175mm dropper and a more slack modern/trail geometry. End of the day it's a matter of personal preference, both are great bikes for the price! As for the brakes I've asked many bike shops about shimano brakes in winter. Most agree Shimano is good down to -20C (-4F) and I prefer easy brake bleeds on Shimanos. Happy riding!

    • @Jamesthebikeguy
      @Jamesthebikeguy  3 года назад

      COngrats on the bike and I hope you enjoy it. Not sure why my experience is so different but mineral oil brakes have gotten packed out and less powerful in the winter. Having used several shimano brakes and a set of tektro brakes in the winter I can say that they have not performed nearly as well as the many DOT fluid brakes I have had.

    It appears that only the small and medium are mullets. You had me confused a bit there because the one I looked at was not. The large and x-large run 4.5" tires front and back. Nice bike but not sold on the colors, reminds me of the '90s, probably won't age well.

    Thanks for the video! I picked up the 2021 Farley 5, medium size. Great bike so far, looking forward to a snowy winter! The only thing that bugged me was the smaller 3.80 wide rear tire. I replaced it with a Gnarwhal 27.5x4.50, same as front tire. Now it's symmetrical, just the way I like it.

    • @James-il3tq

    Nice color. Now i'm sad that I buy Farley few years ago with weak matt green color. Maybe I need to sell and buy new ones. Farley 5 is indeed maybe best Trek's fat bikes if you look price quolity ratio. They should upgrade to 12 speed Deore system, big range back and maybe little bit bigger to front is upgrade for that old 10 speed Deore.

    Great vid. I am about to pre order one but stuck on the sizing - 5ft9 with a 31" inseam. Would you recommend med or large?

    • @ajmckay2
      @ajmckay2 2 года назад

      Definitely a medium. I'm 5'10" with a 32" inseam and I couldn't get the dropper post on the large down low enough. The large has an additional 45mm of standover. I did need to add a 20mm longer stem and some riser bars but I add those to all my bikes. Overall I've been on 3 rides and am pretty happy with the Med. The large runs 4.5" tires in the back also so that adds some more weight that's probably a bit unnecessary. I could have gotten a large but would have either had to swap out a 100mm travel dropper post or gotten rid of the dropper post altogether. I rode a friends 2016 Farley in a size large and it was more stable, but less nimble feeling. I'm planning to ride this year round so I opted for the livelier ride.

    Tried the fat tire revolution. A Rocky Mountain. Terrible handling in snow. Companies advertise how the fat tires can handle Winter. That's a lie. Only if the snow trails are groomed, does the fat bike (or any bike) handle well. In deep snow on roads and trails (anything over five inches of powder), the best tires are the 29x2.35 on the rear and a 29x2.5 on the front. A 27x2.6 rear, and 29x2.4 front, are also very capable of handling trails not groomed. But no matter the tire, you're gonna have rolling resistance, slipping, and using some colorful words to get ya through. Most important: dress lightly. Your body is gonna create a plethora of heat, pedaling in snow. And overheating in cold, is a recipe for gett'n sick.
