I appreciate your videos. Sometimes go to Fort Myers on vacation cycle up the West Coast. But I live in Ohio. Nice job at the end, putting it in a lathe and angling it down.
Nice work. For extra credit, you can CC the combustion chamber to give you a firmer idea of the volume. It might be interesting to know the cylinder pressure, too. It might be nice to make a thin stainless template to check the heads to make sure the reliefs are all the same, without guesswork, kind of a go-nogo gauge.
That is one huge advantage of mopeds over scooters. So damn easy to get to everything! Takes me longer to remove the plastics on my TGB to even get to the head than it does to replace a piston or put a big bore kit on. Had to actually remove the motor/cvt on a China scooter to put a bbk on it. Giant pain in the ass!
Thanks for the tutorial. The Spanish "Malossi" ... Metrakit. Seen quite a few impressive bikes running MetraKit. Why do you think that they started in Spain, developed their brand largely appealing to Spanish pride and patriotism, then pulled up stumps and moved most of their production to Italy?
Not sure... we were just talking about this yesterday, the number of mergers and changing of hands in the motorbike industry. It has happened quite often. Seemingly for different reasons, but common all the same.
@@MopedProblems I’m sure we have met before and I think I sold you guys some mopeds before and I know you know my buddy the guru chris at moped warehouse
So i have a couple tomos...tomoses...tomai..however it's said, both giving me problems. I see others asking questions and read pages and pages of threads but its a lot to take in. I need to figure these out! I feel like they both should run. I've rode both now, one about 300 miles, the other like 3 miles. Really bummed out.
There’s a lot to investigate. In general if a bike has good spark, compression and fuel/air flow it should work. But there are things outside of this that can throw you off, like bad seals or air leaks. One of these days I should set up a Patreon for Moped coaching out of NYC
You need also a Bing 15 ml carb and a Bos demper for lower resistance a top speed, changing sprockets. Then you talk about speed of about 75 km. Also nice to try is a Malossi or Polini cylinder. If you son't want to modify your cylibder head, you can also use an extra gasket to prevent damage piston on your cylinder head. It will lower the comoression a little bit, but better safe then sorry..... This was my experience more than 40 years ago...... For a automatic mooed, as fast as hell.
Is the part with the lathe strictly necessary? I wanna power up my Honda NX50M (if that makes a difference) but I don't have a lathe and don't know someone who does.
This kit looks well installed, I would love to get the polini 80cc kit for my general 5 star v1 after the good guys at second stroke get her running. Not sure if I need to get a new head with the 80cc kit or if I could use the stock head.
The polini 80cc is the best kit for Minarelli motors. Top top top!!! Huge improvement over the stock cylinder... especially when matched with a good performance pipe
I had a Puch Newport with a Polini 64 kit on it, snagged rings and busted like 3 pistons with that thing. Idk if I'm just dumb or if that kit is just super finicky to tune.. It always seized when rolling off the throttle after holding wide open for a bit. I was always nervous riding that moped, it was damn fast tho, and now I regret selling it.
It’s true, the Polini kit was always a powerful but delicate option. I’ve heard many theories to why they fail. But getting down to it, the Metra 64 (kit I am recommending in the vid) just doesn’t have those problems.
@@MopedProblems yeah from my experience it always caught the ring in the exhaust port on the upstroke and broke it along with a part of the piston head. I recall people saying it may be due to the cold intake and hot exhaust gases deforming the aluminum cylinder, leading to the ring being pushed out into the fairly large exhaust port. Could also be due to imperfect timing, but who knows.. I just know that I didn't have enough money to figure it out! Lol.
How fast will a 70cc big bore kit do on a 50cc 2 stroke rough house? U don't see any videos on the rough house extras which I plan on doing?? Thanks. Big Bubba
Big bubba, this is the Addly Rough House? Should be just as straight forward was any 2 stroke scooter. I would expect 10 mph faster with more launch on the way. Always best accompanied with a exhaust pipe and variator tuning
I’d reference the piston head. In this case I cut at 19 degrees. I would say the moped ranges i’ve seen is 18-23 degrees. Find the piston head angle and add 1 degree.
want to put a similar one on my tomos flexer 25km... but, do i have to also set ignition time to 45kmh?? and if so... how is that done? any help would be appreciated thanks!
Yes. Otherwise is the spark too late with igniting the gasoline and air mixture. So what happens is that the mixture is igniting while the piston is already on its way down. So you would have to take kickstart pedal or left pedal of. Then you remove the cover. There are 3 bolts holding it in place. When the cover is off, you can see the flywheel. You need to unscrew the nut and take the flywheel off with a flywheel puller. When that's off, you can see the coil. To the left are 2 lines and on the coil is a dent. You need to losen up 2 little bolts that are holding the coil in place. Then rotate the coil to where the dent lines up with the upper line. Then, put everything back together and test your bike. The spark plug is now sparking sooner so the mixture will ignite when the piston is at the highest point.
damn dude thanks a lot! Just waiting for the flywheel remove piece to arrive already! Really detailed and helpfull response, i appreciate it! I feel my bike wants to go much faster than it actually can right now, when i get to 25-30km/h it makes a sudden restriction noise that im dreaming of eliminating hehe
@@K405X no problem man! I don't know if you have the flywheel nut off already but the easy way to do that is with a impact wrench. Just vrrrrrttt and it's off. No piston stop needed.
Hey man!! Back after some days! So, ignition is set to upper mark now, and changed the exhaust from stock to a biturbo... The ignition is exactly in the upper mark, but now after these 2 changes bike isnt working correctly, a lot of throttle delay and really tough idle... Was told changing the exhaust changed the air/fuel mix and now its to lean, so, tried all sizes of jets trying to stabilize but still nothing... Everything else is still stock, with 6000km old! (also some small grinding in cylinder+manifold by a mechanic)
The 25 km/h has lower compression (achieved by thicker gasket - it drops compression to 6:1 or something similar) and it uses 12 mm dellorto carb (45 km/h uses 14 mm version)
It all depends on the size of the kit. Measure the bore and cut the same into the head. If the kit comes with a matching head gasket, that’s a good tracing tool
This kit would, but there would need to be modifications to the intake and exhaust.... Probably not worth it since there are other kits that bolt onto a TOMOS perfectly.
Thank you for these videos! I was wondering if you know of any 70cc kits for morini m1 engines, all i can find are a couple 60cc kits on treatland and very expensive but would probably be more reliable
The Moroni options are all over the place. There is a change in the cases somewhere in the early 80’s... and depending on which engine you have the kits available may or may not fit easily (the cylinder skirt doesn’t clear)
Looks from here like you are eyeballing the squish clearance! What number were you aiming for. Turning the motor over & hearing no contact is no guarantee of dynamic clearance when the rod and wrist pin stretch in operation. Too generous squish clearance will degrade the speed at which unburnt fuel/air mixture is pumped in, to feed the flame front and scavenge the cylinder in the ex cycle.
We shoot for .7-.9mm squish. Measured by solder. When customers do kit installation themselves, they often skip this step... which i agree is a bad idea.

Thread locker has no place on the top end. The block gets hot enough to make it useless. Additionally any follow up service can lead to poor torquing because of old thread lock creates faux resistance. A torque wrench proper would be a good idea. 10-12 pounds per square inch, but most people don’t have this tool. “Moped tight” is what we use in the industry.

Mine is fast enough with a jet kit and pipe to be honest.

Nah it’s fine. It’s only 15cc
@@MopedProblems ok😁
Thread locker? Torque wrench? Torque specs? Torque pattern? Bruhhhhhhhhhhhhh
@@MopedProblems I've ruined many cylinders, mounting hardware, and cylinder studs learning "moped tight". I def know what you mean with the residual threadlocker making it feel snug when it shouldn't. Thank you for the solid advice you got yourself a subscriber:)
Wish I could hit like twice.
You guys have the whole nyc&li moped seen all screwed up! People think they have gold! They have a pos 70's jaws which is JUNK and want $1000.
Thankfully there aren’t many Jawas in NYC. Total junk.
Goes for all mopeds! A puch moped shouldn't cost $2000. It's a moped.
A lot of people are very passionate about mopeds and it's their Hobby usually price comes with demand out here in Arizona you could get a moped for about for $500 I just saw a 77 peugot I was thinking about getting for 400 something. In New York it's so much more congested so the want for mopeds is higher
Took to much out the head and doing this with upgrading the rest is pointless
Works pretty good though. Solder test on the squish band will let you know if you gone too far
clean your poor lathe :(
This lathe gets put to good use and loves her life!
i love to see a old southbend used i just restored mine hate to see one in the tough shape @@MopedProblems
The music over your voice sucks man . I have 1 moped and 2 scooters. I'm working on my moby av7 doing a motor rebuild an could use some good videos if you can make any . Also I'm wanting to swap my honda express 2 with a clone gy6 150 cc do you think it's easily doable cause right now its seized
you just lost 5hp.
This video is ridiculous! You dont have to tap this decomp hole. Waste your time and money!
It’s an important move if you admire longevity. After time and time again seeing blown head gaskets, we require this technique on all installations with an unused de-comp valve. Doing so has saved our customers money, preventing a blown head gasket the following year.
I have too. Its leaking like hell, it wont idle.
Yes, blocking the decomp hole will save you from this frustration!
What size tap did you use??
this music is so anoying
Those mopeds sucked back in the 80's. And they still suck.
Blue Mountain Edward, i dont like your tone buddy!
