Yoooo, thanks for sharing this! The english portrayal of Xiao makes me so angry for no reason. Or well, little reason. I feel like the Chinese voice and lines help better portray the gentleness of Xiao and the english voice and translations completely wiped that. Xiao is so sweet and misunderstood, my heart ; ;

@@meow6074 hi please read the developer notes on Xiao’s concept. You can find it on the genshin hoyoverse site by googling xiao concept mihoyo, it is in the post titled, Developer Insight #4: Character Stories (I) - "Vigilant Yaksha" Xiao
“According to Xiao's profile, his deepest, most hidden element is gentleness. When all identities and labels are cast aside, Xiao has a gentle side, shown in his curiosity towards phenomena in the human world, but he is very reticent to show this side of himself to others. This aspect was very difficult to capture in his animations, so in the end we created an idle animation that tells a short story: a spark of light that seems to be alive draws near; Xiao stretches out his hand to try to make contact with it, but because of his karma-ravaged constitution, he succeeds only in causing the spirit to fly away. He knew this would be the inevitable conclusion, but feels dejected all the same.
It took this kind of conflict between complex emotions to convey this character's richness and breathe life into his soul.”
Xiao does have a gentler side and I quote, “Xiao is by no means a cruel and callous individual, he is simply reticent to show his emotions to others. Xiao always keeps his distance from the hustle and bustle of human society. This is not because he doesn't care about humanity, but is due to his role as a protector. He must wage war against dark forces out of sight of humans, and endure a suffering that is incomprehensible to them. Despite this, he does not despise humanity.”
The English voice actor completely missed these points. She made Xiao out to be a simple emo boy but all of these characters are much more complex than that. My comment was trying to point out that the translations are much rougher than how it sounds in Chinese. And it’s not just for Xiao, they localized all the other translations for the other characters too.
One example that I found really cute from Xiao when I first heard it was one where it’s late and he’ll say in Chinese something along the lines of, “you go in first, I’ll be here waiting for you.” But the English translation took away the “I’ll be here waiting for you” part. And despite being such a small difference, it took away any hidden emotions that could’ve been added to that. Just like how in Chinese culture, our parents won’t say I love you but will cut fruit for you, in a similar way, we can see glimpses of how Xiao does care for the traveler but won’t say or show it but his subtle voice lines that are lost in translation do.

Actually for the favourite food one, the translation should be ‘the taste of almond tofu and that of dreams(美夢) is very similar’. Which should be a reference to his past where he was eating people’s dreams under the control of the god of dreams

He isn't supposed to be portrayed as emo honestly. Although his EN va is really skilled, she did him dirty and portrayed him a lot differently. I suggest you use CN (or JP since its the most close to OG compared to KR or EN) voiceover if you like him! He's actually a lot more gentle there.
