  • The Navy Yard Philadelphia Walk is another evening walk. It is a hidden gem of Philadelphia. I did not walk for a long enough time to show how big this old naval base is because it closes at 8pm. There are 3 Indego Bike locations onsite. At some point, I will come back and ride bikes. There is a restaurant on the left side of the entrance of the base that is open. No one noes of it so there are fewer people. It is a hidden gem. People can social distance with confidence at this restaurant. I started to go to the naval base at the age of 13 with a friend and her family. It used to be a bustling little city within Philadelphia. Later at the age of 17, I went into the military and I brought my friends. We would come here and use the gym and other amenities of the base. It is a pleasure to walk in the Philadelphia Naval Base. I will revisit and take more videos. I am still learning the GoPro Max Camera that I am recording on.

I remember that day dock, USS Savannah AOR-4, pulled in to get the haul cleaned and painted, then back to Norfolk, for the Holidays and off to dry dock in NYC, when they dry docked us there paint had peeled off from the Philly job and had to be repainted, they forgot to add enough Gardner to the paint, the Philly paint team had to come to Brooklyn and fix their mistake, damn cold winter it was!

Was there in '77,ship was in the yards, Philly had the best Dentist on the East Coast, everyone got their teeth upgraded! Two BB's where mothballed there then the Wisconsin and the Iowa I believe, they where impressive, was there when they pulled the USS Belnap in for repairs after colliding with the USS Kennedy. Sad to see a ship in such a state.

I'd love to see mixed-use retail, entertainment, amusement, and maybe theme park concepts down there similar to Baltimore Harbor. South Broad could be a "Main Street concept" which spurs off to several warehouses that can be converted to outlet mall-type retail (Franklin Mills or Ann Arundel Mills). The aircraft carriers can have virtual flight simulations, and serve as an aircraft carrier museum like The Enterprise in NYC. A larger Aquarian can be built (Baltimore Harbor) Food trucks, restaurants, paddle boats, rides for children (since some is being moved from Penn's Landing), fishing piers, a boardwalk around the basin, with seafood and steak restaurants/sports bars; an esplanade with beautiful planting and shrubberies; soccer and other sports fields for play, playground areas for children, and an extension of the Broad Street Subway which circles the entire complex and comes back to Pattison Avenue.

🍎 pretty cool walk and I think it would be a great idea to come back and do a bike tour of the complex. Very nice to be out by the water. All the best. - H
