HUGE, Huge problem. The 'current" Navy of today is unaware that the Navy (years ago) accidentally sold the 16-inch barrel liners thinking they were just piping. You can shoot only so many rounds through those barrels before the 16 inch barrel liners need to be swutched out for new ones.

I’ve read that there was a 11 inch GPS guided round that was under development when the Cold War ended. Using Sabots to fit the 16 inch guns it could’ve had a range over 100 miles. Probably didn’t get off the drawing board though or there might be more info about it.

We don't need cannon fodder on the modern battlefield. Do you know what the range of an anti-ship missile is? Way more than the 27 mile range of those big guns
It has been suggested and rejected, based upon the logistics of just getting enough fuel into her. That's a truck that gets 5mpg, compared to modern destroyers that get 12mpg. She would need to travel with two oilers - just for her alone. Other concerns are the simple age and wear on the machinery itself. In preservation, it can last a long time, but these ships were buit with a short life span in mind, and to justwin a war. Re-tooling does not even exists anymore, and no arsenal builds the 16" shells, leaving the originals from the 1950's which can be unstable. Even if they removed the big guns and turrets, as well as all below deck suypporting structure, and replaceed all that with 300+ vertical launch tubes, the engines and related gear are all still very old. While it is certainly fast enough to keep up with the fleet, repairs would be complicated and no replacement parts exist. Making it into an Arsenal Ship by removing the turrets and most of the super structure would be awesome, but modern subs are more effective at that, and theyare already paid for as wellas being almost impossible to find and hit.
