- The Hamilton Jazzmaster Viewmatic and the Hamilton Intra-Matic are the topics in this video. Both wristwatches represent a good first watch for beginners, or an affordable watch under 1000 Euros or US-Dollars as an addition for your almost advanced collection.

Whilst the Hamilton Viewmatic can serve as an all purpose watch, the Intra-Matic is a pure dress watch for more formal occasions. They show the spectrum of the brand Hamilton.

Hamilton is a wonderful watch brand. Beautiful designs, great Swiss movements, fantastic history and heritage, along with one of the best quality to price propositions. I really love what they're doing.
My great great grandfather received a gold Hamilton pocket watch on a gold chain when he retired from the railroad. I still have it in the safe, and that piece of American history is what I think of when I think of Hamilton. An Eastern European immigrant coming to Chicago with nothing and ending up with that beautiful time piece. It's more than a timepiece. Hamilton is middle class Americana.

The Hamilton Intra-matic especially the one with the grey smoked dial is absolutely stunning
I lent my dad - not a watch person - a Hamilton Jazzmaster Open Heart for a month shortly after I bought it and he liked it so much he bought it from me. He gets more compliments on his Hamilton than I do with my more expensive "enthusiast-approved" pieces - Rolex, Omega, etc. To the average person it's a very impressive watch. Build quality/finish is to a high standard for the price and the open heart dial looks quite striking and "high-end" to the general public.
I think Hamilton is my favourite brand. Its got most bases covered for every occasion in its repertoire. And overall quality is excellent.
I agree with you Rick. Hamilton has excellent construction quality, attention to detail, and movements which exude accuracy. I just picked up a Khaki King with the Champagne dial and I couldn’t be happier. This is my first Hamilton but I’m sure that there will be more on the way. Do you have a favorite Hamilton? @@edf2953 i too had a khaki field auto for a few years and loved it until it went missing(stolen at a golf tournament) from my bag zip compartment. It started my love of Hamilton .i am saving now for the (Interstellar ) day date to kick start a Hamilton collection. I like so many of their designs.

Bravo to Hamilton - and Bravo to you for standing up for real style, taste and value.
I own over a dozen watches including a Rolex Sub 114060, YM 116622, OP 114300, a speedy, Zenith Defy, Tudor BB58, a JLC reverso, a tank, a GS, a Hamilton Pan Europ and a Hamilton Intramatic Chrono Panda dial....and I’ll tell you honestly that my Hamilton watches can hold their own against any of my watches. The quality of some Hamilton models makes me second guess spending $10k to $15k on other brands.
Hamilton punches well above it’s weight class when it comes to value. Love the brand.
Affordability is now, more than ever, super important. I love it that you made a video like this. Hamilton have some great pieces. Also Certina, like their DS1 line

I love the fact you said 38 looks great on an "average" wrist. Too many reviewers proclaim watches are too big/small but don't mention that is only for the average wrist and there are others out there with bigger smaller wrists that may appreciate other sizes. Just you mentioning of average lets me know you understand it won't be for everyone. 38 is tiny in on my wrist and looks like I'm wearing a kids watch.
I have two hamilton jazzmaster chronograph one with a reversed panda dial and one silver dial and they both look stunning and they have the valjoux 7750 movement top quality for a grand.
That Jazz master was my first"nice" watch.I sold it to finance my climb up the watch prestige ladder.I think l got more of a thrill from it than subsequent watches at 10 times the price.
I like the Jazzmaster Viewmatic,I would prefer it if it was 38mm.I do own a Hamilton Thin-o Matic a wonderful watch.
In the next day or so, I’ll receive the exact same Viewmatic you talk about. I know I’m gonna love it and it will be a watch I’ll pass down, even though I will buy more expensive watches in the future.
I have the silver version of Intramatic in 38mm and it really is an amazing watch and value for the money

This is also a nod to Hamilton’s grammar of design with Intramatic from the 60’s. Hamilton really understands their heritage. Also, a Speedmaster is also a watch made for the masses from the Swatch group so they are in good company.

I recently purchased the new 38mm Champagne dial variant of the Intra-matic, and very happy with. The silver dial/stainless steel case option would have been my second choice if the newer champagne dial model had not been available.
Good video. Hamilton gives very good quality at fair prices. In my opinion, 38mm watches should not have 20mm straps. Too big. 18mm would look better.
I have the 42mm Intra-Matic, with gold PVD and silver dial. The larger diameter makes the watch look thinner than it is, and the size suits me really well. The white date wheel works very well with the silver dial. You are right about the strap, I like the buckle but the leather strap could be better. I used a small amount of leather conditioner to feed and soften the leather, stops it cracking too. When time comes to replace the strap with a non Hamilton one, I will transfer the Hamilton buckle over. What else? I bought it mint condition, looking like new with box and papers for £395 from a pawnbroker in London. It had been sitting in his shop window since January, so I knew he would be happy to sell it and clear space for something new. Thankfully not many people know about this brand and prefer to pay more for fashionable names. As for accuracy of the ETA 2892-2 movement, it sits at about +2 seconds per day. I have to wait nearly a week before it is noticeable enough to need to correct it.
Only snobs think a 1k watch is a beginner piece. A $20 Casio is a beginner watch.

Casio is not only a good beginner watch but a very capable finisher watch. G shock for the masses: nice look on the wrist with any outfit, indestructible, more accurate than a Rolex and with solar cell no maintenance for 20 yrs
A valid point. It gives you peace of mind in a workshop, pool or the bush, knowing if you smash it, then its a pity but not a tragedy. Value for money at the lower end of Casio is incredible and all quartz movements are very accurate. In an emergency of course the F91W can also be rewired as a detonator/timer.
Watches like the Hamilton though are amazing value relative to those that are 4 to 8 times more like an Omega, or 12 to 15 times more like a basic Rolex. My Jazzmaster was a "shop soiled/demo" model and I was lucky in terms of price.
I think it’s fairly obvious that the implication is that it’s a beginner high-end mechanical watch, not just a beginner watch in general. A lot of people have many watches throughout their whole life and yet are not “into watches,” but were they to get “into watches,” that’s where these “beginner watches” make sense. I had many quartz analog and digital watches before I ever got a mechanical watch, and when I did it cost more than any of the other watches I had in the past, yet I still consider it to be a low end automatic. Context is key
Another perceptive, balanced and enjoyable video. I confess I love Hamilton. I have a Jazzmaster GMT 2, and also a Khaki King but with a champagne coloured dial. Both are very reliable and beautiful watches.
Nice. I own several vintage 1950s and 1960s Hamiltons. Parts are still extremely easy to get for them. I want an Intra-Matic now. This is an underrated brand.
I have a Ventura. I love it’s design, and the history behind it... one of the first battery models, the finned Cadillac designer... lovely.
And featured in all four "Men In Black" movies.
Concerning the viewmatic dial contrast. I've bought this model with a dark blue dial and I assure you the contrast is brilliant:) A very good-looking watch.

I have the Intra-matic with the white dial. I use it as a "dress watch", sort of, but not for work (never wear a suit at work), so the absence of a second hand is a statement on my part. A gentleman does not care about seconds. ;) But it's a little annoying in a way, according to the time grapher, of the mechanical watches I have, this is the one that keeps time best. On average +2 s/day.
I love the Viewmatic, I came close to picking one up a year ago. Instead I went a completely different route, and ended up with a CW C65.
The Digits on the second Hamilton are just butiful.
The Intramatic reminds me a little of a LACO vintage 440 Bauhaus style dresswatch from c.1960 I bought a few weeks ago.
These are such lovely watches, I wonder if you could feature one or more in a future programme.

2.-In your opinion, which is the most important German watch company, both for its history and for its achievements.
In the 90’s you could buy top vintage watches like Zenith, Omega, Cyma’s, Eterna and Enicar mostly at top condition at prices below $ 300 now they are doubled or even tripled !

TBH, I'm more interested in that Seiko. I like the Tissot PRX, but I'd much prefer it with a day complication.
I have a Hamilton that looks a lot like the Intramatic, but can't remember the model name. In any case, it has no second hand. So, even though it's quartz, there would be no way to know that without taking the watch apart.
Perfectly accurate, very thin....I like it.
I love my Viewmatic, and at $600, I consider it to be far from cheap. That's why I hate people using the word 'affordable' (apologies if you've been guilty TIm!), as the word will mean something completely different to every one of us.

English is not my mother language, but I've learnt, that affordable isn't cheap. In German it's "preiswert" which means: Worth the price. I think that's it.

This is really (use & wear) interesting especially because people seem to go all-out with their money to buy a luxury watch under the pretense of investment, but are then afraid of actually using it. Obvious culprit here is Rolex, I've even seen people buying a cushion for the desk so the watch clasp doesn't get scratched. What nonsense. If I buy a watch I'm going to use it, and if it scratches up and I have to even for a second pause and feel sorry, then the watch is too expensive for me.

My wife’s family all have fake Rolex and I have a Hamilton jazzmaster day date. They snubbed there nose at my watch haha
I bought a relatively cheap, nice Casio retro watch (diver styled) on ebay and it's precise like the atomic radio. It seems to have sapphire crystal. Bought another with similar case for "pocket watch" reasons and put a different module in it (same number.) The second is damaged and perfect for experimentation in relation to costs. They both beep higher than the modern ones. For me it's those lucky strikes that matter. Salesmen are different than passionate hobbyists.
Having nice clothes and nice watches but no AC has got to be the most European thing I've ever heard.

Just one of the funny differences between the US and EU that we can rib each other over. (I've been through France and especially Italy a lot; I love them; anything I say is all in good fun).

I really like the Viewmatic but I agree, the hands could be more prominent - maybe it'd look better with blue hands? Also, Hamilton lugs always look a bit long to me.

I hear what your saying with the intra-matic but I’d love if it had simple lume plots on the outer edge and very thin lume line on hands. I’d be all in.
Great video, as per usual. My question: you have an enviable collection of waistcoats and yet don't seem to want to adorn them ever with a pocket watch. Why is that? Am I mistaken? If I am, it would be great to see a review of some old pocket watches and how best to wear them (gold, silver, gunmetal, etc. etc.)

The dial of the Jazzmaster has similarities to the Vacheron Overseas.
I quite fancy the intramatic. A bit like a cheap JLC.
Not just any old ETA movement! Same movement that was origianly in the the Omega Seamaster in the intra matic. A dress watch should be mechanical only and have no seconds or date...ever. this watch is wound, put on.... you go out you come home you take it off. A dress watch!
I actually think that about the design of dress watches too. I will allow the date OR the seconds though if forced. If you get one without the second hand though you can buy quartz and not feel bad. Keeps the width down, like a true hand wound movement.
@@funkmon I'm with you on that one. A quartz watch seems more suited to something that doesn't have sweeping seconds which to me is one of the joys of a mechanical.
Question: I have been told that you should not store mechanical watches unwound. Rather, wind the watch and pull the crown (hack) when storing for long periods of time. Would appreciate your thoughts. Cheers!
I never do that (wind the watch and pull the crown). I stored watchers for 15 years without problem.
Hello Tim, why oh why do many manufacturers think we are all bodybuilders! The Viewmatic has more character to my eyes but, like yourself 38 mms is the maximum I can comfortably wear. My late father, who was a bigger build than myself, was quite happy with a 34/35 mms Longine bought in the 60s. I recently acquired my first automatic, a Glycine (advertised as a woman's watch!), it's 36 mms case being a major factor in my purchase. Have a word with these Swiss people Tim! Excellent show and I'm really impressed with your guitar playing. By the way is that a Telecaster next to the coffin(?) behind you?
Unless people stops buying watches for the show and not for themselves, I'm afraid the "wall clock" trend will go on.

The one thing I hate with the Powermatic movements that the Swatch group is using is the fact that they can not be regulated. This is a shame especially for those of us that like to tinker with our watches or when going to service them.

I like the Viewmatic - but I have an Orient that cost a fraction with nice patterned dial - but not winding or hacking. 99% of people have either no interest or no understanding of watches so an affordable watch gets just as many compliments.
A vid on a proper set of leatherworking tools, the most basic ones, would be appreciated. I prefer to listen to your explanations... Have fun Tim.

I have a question for q&a: Recently there are some popular watch media have been found to give misleading information (HDK for their travel clock, or worn and wound for their Panerai history article). What do you think about this? Where do you usually find valid information about watches? The more I am into watches, the more I find these websites are mainly just marketing stuff for brands.

On a bit of budget? The general public would normally be approaching £100 if they
were on a budget. It’s unlikely that £550 to £850 would be a fit for anyone unless they
earn over £50,000 and we’re on a budget. At this time, I have more to spend than
I ever have had in my life and it’s videos like this that remind me ‘not’ to be a silly
watch snobs and to enjoy the watches I already have. Thanks for saving me money.
Both very nice, but I need a sweeping seconds hand or there isnt much point of a mechanical watch, is there? Prefer Seiko Sarx line for dress watches.
I would prefer the black one. Good alternative to NOMOS Orion or JUNGHANS Max Bill.
For the dress watch, by choosing to forego the mechanical sweeping second hand this might as well be a quartz watch purchasable in the $200-$300 range. Why have a mechanical movement if you can't appreciate one of the key features? While you're at it, you could throw in solar charging or more simply a ten year battery and avoid expensive upkeep.

Viewmatic is available in 37mm with blued hands. Have you missed that or why did you go for 40mm version with silver hands?
If you can find first generation of the 37mm it has elabore movement as well :)
I think the Jazzmaster line is very nice, but I'd prefer more options in the 36-38mm diameter range; especially for the dressier pieces. I wouldn't be surprised to see that in the future, as the trend seems to be in that direction.
Watches below the 38mm diameter range is almost impossible to find nowadays.. I'm already having limited options for the 38mm range. The common size is now 40-42mm which is too big for me for a dress watch.

Q & A: Why the power reserve indicator is so rarely present on automatic watches, either on the dial or on the back? To to me, the power reserve indicator on the watch is like fuel indicator on the car!
Agree. It's a very useful complication. People tend to have more philistine tastes so you see chronomoters and diving bezels as being popular when they are far less useful to a massive percentage of people.
I agree with you and wish that more watch makers would include power reserves as I find it be a very useful complication. Maybe its cost? I don’t know. I only know of Seiko offering a watch with and without a power reserve indicator in its Presage Line and I believe the power reserve indicator adds $100 cost. Since many watches have 40 hour power reserves, it’s almost imperative to wind the watch every day to avoid the chance of the watch running out of charge mid day. Perhaps the average consumer would not value the power reserve if he/she is winding the watch on a daily basis anyway? Just a thought.
Orient Star have some watches with a power reserve complication that is really well done IMO. I am currently considering one I found on eBay for a Japanese dealer.

Hi Tim, I'm relatively new to your channel but enjoying it emensemly. One for your Q&A possibly. I love mechanical watches but I work with all sorts of electrical tools and have to demagnetise quite often. Its a pain and I'd rather not do it but at the same time I don't like being parted from a wrist watch. Have you any suggestions other than milgauss, ingineur and the numerous omegas for a decent antimagnetic and shock resistant mechanical watch? Much obliged, Paul.
