I was actually able to get the kit which included a new window for about 140$. I had an estimate for a new door/side lite for 7k. That was crazy so I tackled this with the kit, a new paint job, replaced weather stripping, door sweep, hardware, knobs and kick plate. Came out incredible with total price being around 275$. Thank you!!!

I want to completely replace the window in my exterior door for one that I can open for better air flow. I watched the video to make sure I understand what I'll find when I take out the original window (exactly like the one in the vid). This tells me what I wanted to know. Thank you!!!😁

I recommend painting the plastic frame before installing it too. The plastic yellows & makes it look bad. Plus remove the door (as you discovered) and the door handle & deadbolt, refurbish the door ie new paint new seals. If you're going to do the job go all the way because this it the time to.

I am doing exactly this right now. Problem is finding a video where the guy installs the window seal/trim correctly and tells us what silicone he uses for the trim around the window. I don't know if there is a 2 sided adhesive tape a guy is supposed to use or if I'm supposed to just lay an inner and outer bead of silicone around the trim? Also, how do you know if you have the window and trim centered correctly if the front of the door is faced down on the table when you're installing it? lol

I'm sure glad I found this video. I have a door like the one in the video and was able to remove the window and then remove the original adhesive/sealant that has long caused a problem by oozing a gooey mess onto to the door along the bottom edge of the outer window frame panel. After removing the gunk, I used some silicone caulk, as demonstrated in the video. I believe this saved me from buying a new door to solve a pesky problem. Your door also appeared to have the oozing adhesive/sealant; it appears as black matter along the right edge and bottom edge of the window frame; I noticed it 15 seconds in to the video.

When we put the outer frame and glass back in, the glass slid down just enough to stop us from putting the inner frame on. I found your video and we took the door off, laid it on a 6ft. table, cleaned off all the old caulk and put a bead of clear silicone all around, put the door back on top and screwed the frame on and it came out great. You can run a bead of the good clear silicone around to opening before inserting the window and frame. Then a bead on the inside before putting the inside frame up. This seals the frame up better in my humble opinion , and you only need one type and tube of caulk. These frames have a nice clean line and don't need painters caulk on them if you seal the frame to the door with a bead of the clear. Wipe off any excess they may squirt out the side right away. If you apply a bead around an 1/8" thick around the openings, you should be good.😉

Honestly, you can buy a new frame and glass for $131.00 on Amazon. If you use masking/painters tape and secure the outer frame to the door and then place the glass and then carefully the inner frame, its much easier and more practical than removing the door.

Hey I tried that. My helper on the other side kept letting the heavy glass push against the taped frame before everything was in alignment... and it should shift out of place. What really worked in the end was pinching the frames together at the top, midpoint with one screw. The whole thing was like trying to make a sandwich upright... ugh. I wish the frame had been already attached to the exterior side. There were no instructions. So aggravating.

I have a door just like that but I want to change out the solid window with one that opens.

Would have been a good opportunity to sand and paint the door since it will clash against the pristine new white frame.
Wouldn't it have been relatively easy to make those frames from wood instead of using plastic?
