  • In this interview with Eastern Orthodox icon carver and commentator Jonathan Pageau, we discuss what he calls "The Symbolic World," how it manifests everywhere (including popular culture), his relationship with Jordan Peterson, and how we might understand some of what we are seeing with the reactions to COVID-19.

    This video really helped me understand how the differences in Christian traditions work together to reach out, gets reactions, and be relevant. Christ fills all creation by this manner.

      I am so glad to hear that! I am grateful for Jonathan’s wisdom and willingness to share with other traditions like this (especially in finding areas of commonality and disagreement with such charity).

    Might be my favourite Jonathan Pageau interview. You covered all the bases. His relationship with Peterson is so interesting to me. I hope to see them reunite whenever Jordan returns to RUclips

      Those are very kind words! I wanted to learn a thing or two in this interview, but I especially wanted to introduce Jonathan to people in my network that were not familiar yet. I’m hoping it continues to do that.

      Wisdom Collective You’re certainly on to something. Look forward to seeing more. Has Jonathan posted this on his page? Maybe in a couple weeks have him post it on his page to introduce more people to you.

      He shared about the Jordan portion in a Facebook group and the symbolic world clips channel has shared a snippet (more to come from what I hear).

      In the meantime, I would love if you could share on whatever social/platforms you have. I appreciate any support as we get things started!

      I like Peterson's goals but a lot of what he says negatively applies to himself. His life is in drastic need of sorting and his room is a mess.
      So I think once young men understand the basics they should move on to others for guidance.

    This is a solid intro to Pageau and symbolic thinking and participation.
    I'm curious what other interviews you have coming down the pike.

      Some more focused on art, stoicism, beauty and meaning in architecture/city planning, film and story telling, prayer, and more! They won’t all be around symbolism, and not all the guests will be Christian, but subscribe to hear those conversations that I publish bi-monthly or so (for now).

    The New Atheist thing: Hitchens died and then there was the Atheism+ debacle. Some of us concluded that Atheism+ showed that religion was inevitable, and that maybe instead of trying to destroy religion and wait for the horrors that fill the void, that maybe it would be better to take some time to figure out why that is and possibly throw in our lot with one that is less bad than others. Then Peterson showed up, who's most valuable contribution, in my opinion, and not to denegrate his other contributions, was introducing Pageau to the world.

    • @WisdomCollective
      @WisdomCollective  4 года назад +1

      Great point on Jordan introducing Jonathan to a wider audience! What an interesting connection. Because you brought it up, I was deeply saddened by Hitchens death when it happened. Although he was a fierce atheist at times, I will never forget when he told Richard Dawkins that “if there was just one religious person left in the world, I wouldn’t try to get rid of them or try to convert them...” something about liking the fight too much and that the world might ultimately need it still. He said he would never forget the way Dawkins looked at him when he said that.

      @@WisdomCollective Oh agreed. Hitch had intellectual honestly, charm, a love of humanity and the truth. A pleasure to see him debate no matter what side of his issue you were on, though I wouldn't have wanted to debate him myself.

    Thank you symbolism is so fascinating. I am now wondering what is the pattern of the UFO phenomenon ?

    • @WisdomCollective
      @WisdomCollective  4 года назад +1

      Great question, and hard for me to say off top! I know Jonathan has shared scattered thoughts on “the foreigner” before (and there’s a biblical ideal of showing the foreigner hospitality which is consistent with being made in Gods image). I also know that he has a video on “The Symbolism of Aliens” that might be a good start.

    • @nicolasleger5196
      @nicolasleger5196 4 года назад +1

      @@WisdomCollective Thank you, from what I've read about UFO-human interactions doesn't really fit with the notion of "hospitality".

    Video games are probably the biggest waste of time ever invented. And time is sacred.

    • @WisdomCollective
      @WisdomCollective  4 года назад +1

      Time is sacred (see my interview on “art & stoicism” that gets into this). Video games certainly can be a big waste of time, they don’t have to be, but they certainly can be (and maybe in most instances are just that, just not “all” instances).

    • @LKRaider
      @LKRaider 3 года назад

      @@WisdomCollective I too find games mostly a waste of time, but I am fascinated by the medium. I dream of us growing the game medium into adulthood (as a medium) and having it being able to extend our play mechanisms to learn real values and grow understanding, it can work for greater social cohesion, but only if the hierarchy it gets embedded in has value as well. The game medium has the seeds of the interactive nature needed to build digital integration of people and allow everyone to participate and bring their value.

    • @WisdomCollective
      @WisdomCollective  3 года назад +1

      @@LKRaider this is why they are so powerful! They map onto our play/game circuitry with narratives and all the patterns we know and love. The medium is fascinating, and I am hopeful for people (especially young men) to live out the real world articulation of healthy competition, ascent, growth, etc. that seems to draw so many in!

    Wisdom collective you can’t have it both ways. You can come to orthodoxy (humble)and get the fullness of the faith or you can have it your way (pride) and try to mimic orthodoxy

      Wisdom Collective I hope you understand I meant no harm I just know the depths that are in orthodoxy. Have I reached them ? No far off. what I do know is you either point to him and his church or I’m not sure where you’re pointing to if not to his church and him. That’s all I do know.
