Here’s a right little account I recorded in 2017 in the home of Stella and Johnny Moloney from Wexford Town as part of the The Dresser Project. Nothing to do with dressers, but all to do with The Black Dog, which local folklore tells us is a reincarnation of the devil himself.
The Black Dog story is something you’ll find in every corner of the country if you go digging and he is often described as being the size of calf, with big fiery eyes and a fiery tail. In most cases these account came about to keep people away from certain places etc. I love how Johnny’s Black Dog has the ability to smell drink off you which he claims was put out by the local clergy.
I’ve tons of accounts from rural Wexford but it's great to get one from Wexford Town, a town which is brimming with folklore. The cherry on the cake for me has to Johnny’s Wexford Town accent which is one of the countries unique accents. An accent which confuses many, as it has tones of Down and Antrim laced with bits of Cornish and the English West Country.
The Black Dog folklore is also found in England, Wales, Isle of Man and Scotland and there are recorded sightings going back to 1500's in England.
