"Kids in the Bristol are sharp as a pistol when they do the Bristol stomp" love it!! I must add that my Mother would dance the "Jitter Bug" to this and she could dance like no tomorrow!!!
One of my earliest memories is dancing to this song on a 45 vinyl record from my parents' collection. The Dovells are relatively obscure - this was their biggest hit.
I wouldn't say they were obscure. Eight top 100 hits, of which six were in the top 40, this one reached #2 (#1 on Cashbox) and "You Can't Sit Down:" hit #3. They released 4 of their own albums and were featured on three others. In 1969 they were doing 300 shows a year, including their Las Vegas shows which were ver popular.
Really happy you liked "The Bristol Stomp" I'm Lynda Appell . My father Dave Appell wrote the music. For the record Kal Mann wrote the lyrics. Cameo Parkway
The Dovells were an American doo-wop group who formed in 1957 under the name "The Brooktones". They had a hit song "No, No, No". In 1960 they became The Dovells & had the hit dance song "Bristol Stomp" & "Do The New Continental". They also recorded "Out In The Cold Again", "You Can't Sit Down" & "If You Wanna Be Happy".
I was a kid during the Doo-Wop era of the 1950s. I LOVED the "Bristol Stomp" when it came out on the radio back then. So glad you younger folks like it also.
I remember when we were kids that whenever this song came on the radio, no matter what our parents were doing, they broke out dancing. One time they were arguing, but when this song came on, they broke out dancing like nothing ever happened.😂😂😂😂😂😂. R.I.P. Mom and Dad.
This was one of those great recordings when AM radio was king. You would want tum the radio up a bit, at home or in you car, whenever it was broadcasted. It just made you feel happy etc. It did have a musical hook in the emphasis of the three beats of " Bris - tol - Stomp". en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bristol_Stomp A video of "stomp" dancing ruclips.net/video/y3MAhvrWMac/видео.html
Ahhh the good ole days.👏👏 I'm soooo happy our younger generation can appreciate this type of music!❤️ I was born in 1960🫨my brother was 12 yrs older than me. He passed in 1979😢 I grew up listening to this music which I fell in love with it. I grew to respect and appreciate the music of that time. It had/has given me very, very special memories that will stay in my heart and head for a long while.💖✨👏🥰
I used to love going to the Fri and Sat nite dances At the Levittown Firehouse, the Bristol Firehouse, the Edgely Firehouse And the Trenton NJ Jew Hall dances.. The Bristol stomp was always played at the Firehouse dances and when everyone stomped it really sounded loud and great.. A lot of the regulars at the FH dances were from Dick Clark’s American Bandstand show on Philly Chanel 6. Those dances were the best of times in the 60s ; I wish young kids today could put down their phones and go to dances to enjoy the people, the dances and talk to one another, no barriers, just fun Everytime I hear an Oldie, it puts a smile on my face, and I think of “The Good Old Days”
The first time i heard this song was on a Jukebox . I was 12 and walked into a restaurant with my friend and two adults . They brought us there for a coke and listen to some music . It was mid afternoon and the place was empty . We sat down and they put money in the jukebox . The lights started to flash all different colours and The Bristol stomp came on . It was loud and the room came to life . Boy did i feel cool sipping on my coke and listening to the Bristol stomp.
Fun Fact about The Bristol Stomp! Some churches down south ages ago used the "Bristol Stomp" chords in their congregational hymns! Lively church services!
The Dovells take me back to AM radio WABC in NY since growing up in Passaic, NJ that's what we listened to. That was the great Chubby Checker of Twist fame making the introduction.
You're more accurate than any music reactors I can think of in going for the gold from the 50s and 60s. For the most part, the reactors who choose songs from this period choose bad songs more often than good ones. Sometimes they choose the worst songs of superb groups. It's frustrating. Have you considered trying an early Beatles song? In my opinion that would be 1963 - 1964. There are many reactors who do Beatles reactions despite the strong copyrighting.
I was at the end of elementary school when this song came on the radio (1961). I loved to dance back then, and this is obviously a great, uptempo number to dance to. But I don't have any memory of kids in my area (Rochester, New York) doing the "Bristol Stomp". I, personally, loved the twist, and that is the only dance craze I can recall being done at dances. Other than than that, we just kind of let whatever music was playing inspire our body and head movements. I guess you could call what we did "free style". My favorite dance was slow dancing where you actually got to hold the girl close to you. Oh, yeah!
This was fun. I really enjoy your reactions, I feel so happy and relaxed every time I click on one of your videos. I am really starting to look forward each day to my "Shawn and Mel" time. I so appreciate your style and your how you go into every song, looking for the best and wanting to be pleased. Your videos just keep getting better and better!
😂 I just randomly saw this pop up in my feed. My grandma used to excitedly show me the dance moves to this song, I thought it was the tackiest thing, but now it’s a fond memory. 💀
I was raised in Morrisville Pennsylvania 5 minutes from Bristol Pennsylvania I remember this song so well and the dance Bristol Pennsylvania just did a mural of the artist and the dance on a building in Bristol Pennsylvania
Len Barry, who was doing lead on that song, was such an underrated singer performer and he absolutely knocks this song out with his amazing vocals and some fancy foot work. By the way Shawn and Mel, check out the song 1-2-3 l, sung by Mr Barry. The Bristol Stomp song was 1961.
fun fact: when I was a kid, my friend and I were trying to crip walk, and his dad saw us and said "back in my day, we used to call that move the Bristol Stomp"
My sister (may she RIP) & My oldest Brother would be on the Hop in Illinois & won a lot of the contests. I'm sure they did that one. They were great dancers & skate dancers.
The Dovells were big in early 60's. There other hits "Do The New Continental", "Hully Gully Baby" and their biggest "You Can't Sit Down".Lead singer Len Barry went on to a big hit "1,2.3" . That video was from a movie, not a real audiance.
I really love comments you do on the song. I was wishing you do a song by Red Sovine. Call Teddy bear, because I believe you two will love it as much as I do. It always brings a tear to my eye and I'm sure it will do the same for you. Love Albert your friend for ever.
Despite being the lead singer for the Dovells, Len Barry was an underrated singer/performer, but he knocks this song out with his amazing vocals and a little bit of fancy foot work!!
Yeah like I’m like an old guy and stuff and I heard the song before but I’ve never seen the video check out all those old people out there “the squares” watching them that’s so hilarious I am so glad I had you guys bring up these songs because I’ve never seen the videos before and that’s incredible
I'm guessing they were the boy group back in there day? Maybe on T.V. they were sitting but at the dance hall's they were stepping dancing tearing up the wood floors.
Philadelphia and its suburbs, including Bristol, was a hotbed of Doo-wop and rock n' roll in the 50's and early 60's. The American Bandstand TV dance show was in Philly and it was a national focal point of youth music. AND, the kids would dance The Stomp on that show.
A real toe tapper that one is. Another singing group you might like is the four preps, 26 miles. It's smooth and makes you feel like you're on an tropical island
Just like this song a number of the 60s hits were about a specific dance. Probably the most famous would be the twist by Chubby Checker. The king of these types of recordings was an artist from Memphis named Rufus Thomas. In his repertoire he had, do the funky chicken, the dog, walking the dog, and my absolute favorites push and pull and the breakdown. If available you might check out these last two.
I loved doing the Bristol Stomp….when everyone on the dance floor was stomping the floor was actually shaking! Lol.
Lol, it did!
Everybody in Philly did the stomp. Pretty Little Angel Eyes(Curtis Lee), Good Lovin(Young Rascals), I Do( Marvelous Marvellos)..etc
"Kids in the Bristol are sharp as a pistol when they do the Bristol stomp" love it!! I must add that my Mother would dance the "Jitter Bug" to this and she could dance like no tomorrow!!!
The lead singer, Len Barry, had a top 5 hit in 1965, titled “1-2-3”. Please give this song a chance, you won’t regret it.
Len Barry - (Great voice!!) (June 12, 1942 - November 5, 2020) RIP
Couldn't agree more.
Wow great info lm 73 grew up in this period
I posted 123 for friends today
I didn't realize it was Len Barry.
Love those old songs.👍
Yes it was a dance! The also had a huge hit You can’t sit down. They were from Bristol PA.
Jerry Blavat.... Che Vous ballroom.
Thanks for triggering that memory. I used to blast You Cant Sit Down ("You gotta move move move..") on my little transistor radio
The Philly area had some incredible music from the 50's & 60's! The Dovells, The Orlons, Chubby Checker, Bobby Rydell, Frankie Avalon and Fabian!
@@steveb.8491 Yep. Lee Andrew & The Hearts, Delfonics, Sons of Robin Stone, Hall & Oates, Ted Rungren, Keith, Patty Labelle, Tammy Terrell....

I'm 57 and my sister's had an album that had this song and many other great Doo Woop songs when I was younger.
Really happy you liked "The Bristol Stomp" I'm Lynda Appell . My father Dave Appell wrote the music. For the record Kal Mann wrote the lyrics. Cameo Parkway
This song never gets old.
The great Len Barry, the pride of Philadelphia, also had a solo career. You should react to his big hit, "1-2-3". Talk about blue-eyed soul!
Had this '45! Love these oldies. That audience, lol.

Another big hit in 1960-61… loved doing “ The Bristol Stomp “ so much fun in these day’s.
Good music knows no color boundaries.
The Bristol Stomp was popular in the late 50s and early 60s . I think it originated in a suburb in Pennsylvania called Bristol.
I had never heard this or them , but they are good, those groups then just got into thier music because they actually perfomed it
Bristol, PA. Philly area had the best dancers.
I was a kid during the Doo-Wop era of the 1950s. I LOVED the "Bristol Stomp" when it came out on the radio back then. So glad you younger folks like it also.
Big hit back in the day. The beginning of rock and roll.❤
I remember when we were kids that whenever this song came on the radio, no matter what our parents were doing, they broke out dancing. One time they were arguing, but when this song came on, they broke out dancing like nothing ever happened.😂😂😂😂😂😂. R.I.P. Mom and Dad.

What fun, dancing was very important to our generation that's why we had all the dance shows on TV
Saw them in concert !
I Only Have Eyes For You, by The Flamingos. This Is A lovely way to spend an evening by the Spaniels. Great doo wop songs.
Absolutely fun song to dance to! I danced this all the time with my dad.

I was a senior in high school when this song came out.
It was my girlfriends favorite song to dance to. I ended up marrying her. Doo-wop was king!
This is the exact video I hoped you would watch. You guys Rock.

This was from a movie, "Don't Knock The Twist" where the musical acts were preparing for a T.V. show, so that was not the typical audience! 👍🏻😄
Fun Fact about The Bristol Stomp!
Some churches down south ages ago used the "Bristol Stomp" chords in their congregational hymns!
Lively church services!
That lead voice is so dang good!!
This is a 60s tune
That was awesome guys!
One of the big hits back in the day. Also play You Can’t Sit Down.
The Dovells take me back to AM radio WABC in NY since growing up in Passaic, NJ that's what we listened to. That was the great Chubby Checker of Twist fame making the introduction.
Hey, Love your videos. The 60s had the best music and great bands.. It also was a great time to grow up.
One of my all time favorite songs.

Oh, yes! Maybe we should ask for 'The Great Pretender'...👍
The Bristol Stomp was a Philadelphia dance, still popular in this area.
It was a great time for music and a happy time in life when everyone got along and was one.
Since you are enjoying the oldies, you might like "A Teenager In Love" -Dion and The Belmonts, "Roses Are Red My Love" - Bobby Vinton
My friend had teenage brothers...we were 11..
But they taught us this dance 🤣 hadn't heard this in ages
This was fun. I really enjoy your reactions, I feel so happy and relaxed every time I click on one of your videos. I am really starting to look forward each day to my "Shawn and Mel" time. I so appreciate your style and your how you go into every song, looking for the best and wanting to be pleased. Your videos just keep getting better and better!
Everybody knew "The Stomp" . . . . . EVERYBODY ! ! !
After game dances on Friday nights . We danced our asses off lol
Sadly, my almost 76 year-old knees, would give out if I attempted to do this today!!
😂 I just randomly saw this pop up in my feed. My grandma used to excitedly show me the dance moves to this song, I thought it was the tackiest thing, but now it’s a fond memory. 💀
You should hear "You Can't Sit Down" & "Hully Gully Baby" by this group!!
Yes!! I suggested this song a few times and glad to see you are listening to it.
God bless 🙏❤️
Thanks
I remember my sisters would have dance parties and this one was a big thing. I was just a ten year old but they let me hang around.
I was raised in Morrisville Pennsylvania 5 minutes from Bristol Pennsylvania I remember this song so well and the dance Bristol Pennsylvania just did a mural of the artist and the dance on a building in Bristol Pennsylvania
I remember when my sister bought this home on 45 rpm.
My mom and aunt would do this dance in the living room in the mid 60’s….

Gold. Music
My sister could do the Bristol Stomp. She and her friends played this song and danced it at their garage parties. :)
The Dovells were big in early 60's. There other hits "Do The New Continental", "Hully Gully Baby" and their biggest "You Can't Sit Down".Lead singer Len Barry went on to a big hit "1,2.3" . That video was from a movie, not a real audiance.
Dang, the Hully Gully, almost forgot about that dance. We did them all.
I have two songs that I know you will love because of the love you have for each other! The Tymes So Much in Love and the Vogues My Special Angel

In reference to A comment this mom would jitterbug also. My parents taught all how ❤️❤️❤️🌷

The whistling and hard stomping were something to see as part of the dance. There's a clip somewhere on youtube. I think I've seen it
A real toe tapper that one is. Another singing group you might like is the four preps, 26 miles. It's smooth and makes you feel like you're on an tropical island
The great Dick Dale did one called the Surfers Stomp
"The joint is jumpin'" ???😆
my great uncle knew the main singer of the ban, Lenny borisoff, they went to the same high school
Trying to find video of the kids doing the bristol stomp, we were doing it all over the place
They had another great song called you can’t sit down
Have not heard this song before, but I have heard the lead singer "Len Barry" singing his big hit "123" in 1965. Have a listen.
THAT'S FROM A MOVIE...LOVE YOUR REACTIONS..THAT WAS JACKIE WILSON WHO INTRODUCED THEM.
Even though there were 5, they had almost a "barbershop quartet" sound.
SHAWN,BLACKFOOT TRAIN TRAIN
