10:10 This is actually false. If you choose X on the character select screen, you start with his force armor from Mega Man X4, But if you choose Zero, X's armor gets damaged in the fight with sigma, and you're stuck with Zero's Z buster, which is quite frankly useless

X5 can be fun but the multiple endings with very little canon ending hurts. The downgrade from X1 to X4 hurts quite a bit too. Alia pausing the game to talk to the player really hurts the pacing as she doesn't add anything to the game. The 3 possible game scenarios with 1 of them meaning u can't use Zero hurts a lot too. When trying to play as Zero the fact that one has a one in three chance of losing him is very bad
Apparently the good ending happens for X6, and not the “mixed” ending people said it was. They didn’t fully destroy Eurasia but rather minimized damage. Citation Marx’s MegaMan X6 vids they are great
@@neonthunder3261That was just a straight up retcon in X6...right after the previous game, tho? And this is the main reason why I count every game after X5 as fan fiction
soul body was an ability from X4 that you get from the mushroom dude but it's still weird because only X could get that and I don't remember Zero ever having that ability
18:30 It's Bubble Crab's theme. 34:01 Here's a funny little tip about the armor peices collection within this game. X has 4 different armors in this game. The 4th armor, the Falcon Armor, the Gaia Armor and the Ultimate Armor. The Fourth armor was the armor you start out with in the game upgrades and all. The Gaia Armor is more of a heavy set armor that gives you 2 abilities. You can push certain blocks away that block your path. It also has the ability to stand on spikes without taking any damage. The Falcon Armor is unique because of 2 things. First, it does give you the ability to fly for certain periods of time. The second feature gives you a piercing shot when the X Buster is charged. Ultimate Armor gives you the ability to spam the Nova Strike attack all over the place. There is a code to activate this armor. 43:26 It's Doctor Wily.
MegaMan x 5 was the first game I ever bought myself, I was 10 and mowed lawns for a few weeks. This game was mind blowing at the time because we had wanted x vs zero since x1, to know who was stronger. So being ten, own money, buy game, mind BLOWN. I don't think you understand what it like to be there at the time. It was incredible.
I like the more historical angle you took with this review... I wasn't around for back then so it's interesting and actually very useful to know the context. Awesome video!
37:37 I've never understood how the Sigma virus transformed into the Zero virus. I don't understand what "virus" mixed with the Sigma virus to create the Zero virus. And what is the difference? The game suggests it's new, but it doesn't really make much sense to me. 38:12 Clear callback to the boss of Sigma Stage 2 in MMX. You probably knew that, I just wanted to mention it! 40:10 Soul Body is the attack you get from Split Mushroom in MMX4. Only X gets it though, Zero gets a double jump from Split Mushroom. I always found it weird (and kind of a stupid line). 44:10 Is that grey blob supposed to be the giant head you just destroyed? Another cheap ass decision that doesn't make much sense 48:54 The music synced up with X charging his buster was PERFECT! Sorry for all the comments, I'm just now finishing the video lol I think the idea of it being a "rental game," cheaply made for a specific market makes a lot of sense. It's just sad because the first 4 games were all terrific, then we get a lackluster finale... Then 3 MORE cheaply made X games (X8 might be good, I've never played it) to tarnish the series' legacy even further. It just sucks. Having said that, I'd love another X game with the same care and love the first four games got. PS. Duff McWhalen's stage sucks. Everyone knows that, but since you ended with it onscreen, I had to mention it.
Yeah, the virus stuff is weird. Thanks for clearing up the soul body thing. Yeah, the grey blob is so weird (it's just still art, why not draw something that actually makes sense?). Don't be sorry, I like the comments!
It's because the Sigma virus *IS* the Zero virus (afaik), it came from the revelation in X4 that Zero was the original maverick created by Wily and Sigma caught the virus when he defeated Zero
You didn't like the X vs Zero music?? I thought it was one of the best songs in the entire series, and the fight itself is an evolution of the vs Zero fight from X2 (and comes complete with a fight against X if you play Zero yourself). If you go the route where you lose Zero, that fight gets even better, too.
Great review! Glad you're posting again. I really loved X5 when i first played it. And while I still love the story, the gameplay is frustrating to say the least. Have fun with x6...you'll need to reuse that painting in your video preview for that game 😂
Thanks! Yeah, same, I really like x5 when I first played it, but it is frustrating. Yeah, I'm half way through x6 and it's interesting to say the least.
I noticed in the gameplay shown that you tend to walk around a lot during stages as opposed to dashing unless you have to. I know you mentioned that replaying through stages wasn't really enjoyable, that you really don't like waiting, and that playing as Zero felt cumbersome. At least for me personally, I didn't really feel that because mobility with dashing makes things pretty quick. The falcon armor also makes navigating through stages a lot less difficult. I'm not sure if that's just the footage used making it seem like not a lot of dashing is happening though so it could just be a personal difference in experiences. I do wish they put more effort into some of the visuals for sure, but at the time it was what it was. Also, both the Ultimate Armor for X and Black Armor for Zero are accessible without using a code in I think the second(or was it third??) sigma stage depending on who you go in the stage with in case you didn't already find that out. Always thought that was neat.
I could definitely dash more. My gameplay is usually from my first time playing through each area, so I'm kind of just taking it all in. I didn't know about the armor in the second Sigma stage. Thanks for the tip!
Did publishers get paid by big rental franchises to carry their games? I know they didn't initially, but I don't know if that landscape changed over time. I guess I don't understand why Capcom (or any publisher) would care about making a game that appeals to customers at a rental store when they don't profit off of rentals. Are you saying rental appeal was a sort of advertising that was supposed to loop back around to sales?
I'm not 100% sure how the business worked, but in the late 90s and early 2000s there were thousands of rental store (even grocery stores where I lived stated having small rental sections with movies and games), so a game like x5 (and probably also x6) was able to sell quite a few copies just be getting into the rental stores.
I'm typically gameplay over graphics but man its so jarring to see some of the boss animations look so lifeless. I'm a sucker for prerendered graphics but it's definitely not done as well here... But I still somewhat like them for being "campy" like you said. However I do think the ugliness works in favor for Sigma as It makes him very uncanny like some early 90s CGI stuff. Kinda fits with the digital virus thing going on with him. But man X5 was the first Megaman game that left me disappointed. It's not terrible since it does play and feel like a solid Megaman X game with some great ideas. But it just doesn't have quality level designs, pacing, and boss fights.
Yeah, those boss animations can be rough. I think my expectations were really low. Going back for this review I had heard this game was terrible for years, so I think I was pleasantly surprised. But yeah, compared to what came before it is disappointing.
You've done a great job with the series so far. But like, the X vs Zero theme is awesome and you kind of ignore that fact and say there's nothign special about the stage or moment, ya know? Also I guess the pinned comment is valid too. Otherwise, yeah, I pretty much agree with what you said about this game, I've only beaten this one like, 3 times? 4 times?
The Alia calls are truly baffling. Even if you got rid of them I don't think this would be a great game, Tidal Whale and Burn Dinorex's levels are just total chores. Some of the others are okay but they're some of the weakest stages in the series (alongside X3 IMO). The soundtrack is wicked though, have to give it that, and the parts were a great addition, I'm surprised you didn't mention them at all. Plus they shortened the lag on the dash, which is a big improvement over X4. I'm looking forward to see you review X6, it's certainly an "interesting" entry to say the least.
