Great review. This is one of my favourite X games alongside X2 and X4, but I can't deny its flaws. However, despite the game being kind of a mess, I really appreciate the ambitious new additions that reward 100% completion and the darker tone that makes the game feel like a war that won't ever truly end. So I really think it was worth experimenting with this title, and I suggest you to play it again for the content you missed (and oh boy, is there more to see). With megaman X4 we're back to the A team doing its magic, so I look forward to your thoughts on it when the time comes
For me, MMX3 may not be perfect. But its still a solid game. And what also makes it special is that it was the last Megaman game to be made for the SNES before the console faded away.
The only collectible you can get from zero is his saber. If you beat vile before going to the fortress there will be a dragonfly miniboss in doppler stage 2. It's the only boss room you can go in as zero (the game never tells you this by the way) and if you beat the miniboss it will crash into zero and he'll say he can't go on and gives you his saber. It adds another level of charge to the x buster that does 16 damage if I remember right.
This game is a mixed bag for me. I love the weapons and the vertical dashing, but the levels are boring and cheap, where you fight the same enemies over and over again. It seems like Minakuchi tried to transfer over the level design from the Gameboy games with tight cave like platforming and it doesn’t always work for me. I loved the extra collectibles and optional fights, but the mechanics around them are way too complicated. The music has some good tracks (especially the songs with guitar solos) but I was overall kind of disappointed with the soundtrack. This may seem like a weird comparison but it kind of reminds me of Modern Warfare 2019. It has great weapons and sound design but horrible maps that encourage camping. Luckily for X3, weapons are my favorite part of every Megaman game, so I definitely like the game, but I just wish the levels were more interesting and well thought out. Great review as always!
MAN all these people saying X3 isn’t as good as the others can get bent. This is just some hive mind bandwagon shit. X3 is the best in the entire Mega Man series, X and otherwise. It aint perfect, they fucked up Zero, but the game was awesome, the armor was awesome, the secrets were awesome, the music was awesome.
It isn't some hivemind bandwagon shit, because I clearly remember me and my friends being disappointed with X3 due to all of the points that he mentioned. None of us were part of a megaman fan community, and we all played the game separately but arrived at the same conclusion. In the end though, there are people who like X3 and say it's their favorite, so who cares what people say!
It's definitely a hive mind going on especially if you played x2 which the music was absolutely trash🚮 compared to x3 and boring generic bosses from the 1st. I dont see how ppl think X3 sucks especially since it's better than x2 in almost all departments. Weak minded ppl all have to follow the trend no matter what.
I dont think you know what a hive mind is btw. But this game is awful. Yeah i said ot. Its unpolished, unfinished, cheap and has terrible level design and gameplay flow. This is coming from someone whos great at this game. Its a bad game period. Theres no debating it. Repetitive enemies, cheap deathtraps, sluggish feel, poor pacing. Its better than X7 but still one of the worst and not in a good way. Played it as both a kid and adult and my feelings are the same
@@zachariahsmith9130Oh you think it’s bad therefore it’s bad. Period. I get it. I hadn’t realized you were the appointed authority on good and bad games, I should have checked before expressing my opinion on the internet. How foolishly naive of me.

Man the ride armors in this game are completely useless. Just like playing as Zero it is a very poorly implemented novelty. Only time the ride armors are useful is when they are required to break a floor and wall for hidden collectables. LOL. This game is full of half assed ideas and gameplay features that could've been cool but they ultimately ended up being too shallow and add no value to the experience.
Also, I would always remap the dash button to R, instead of A. The R button allows you to use the dash as it's meant to be. I can ninja my way through most stages without many issues like this. I'm almost never moving without the dash.
I liked X3 alot for it's collectibles. I know many people dislike the backtracking but in my opinion it makes the game feel almost like a metroidvania. The Stages don't really feel like stages but more like places that you can revisit multiple times to make progress. That is why MMX4 felt so dissapointing to me because it really toned down the backtracking and item collecting aspect. One thing I would change in X3 though is the implementation of bit and byte. You make a good point. They should be hidden. Because the game gives you 2 routes for them anyways (defeat them with their weakness and they get destroyed and you unlock an alternate path in the castle stage) So they should just be hidden and get destroyed with any weapon. Same goes for vile. Maybe im misremembering but was there even a point in finding him in a stage and defeating him if you don't go for killing him with his weakness anyways? Also hot take but I prefer the PS1 Soundtrack
Yeah, they levels do feel like places. The dam for Toxic Seahorse, the mine for Tunnel Rhino, and the airport for Gravity Beatle all feel like locations that have a strategic purpose for the Mavericks.
I've always found it really weird how the game just decides to tell you that X will have to destroy Zero one day. It feels very sudden and kind of gratuitous, since the entirety of the game's events don't ever reference this. It _kind of_ makes sense if you take the plot of X2 into consideration, but the important plot points in that game is delivered to us by events seen and lived by the characters themselves. I think learning about this through in-game events would have been much more impactful.
Definitely, there's a few Wily references in X2 but they are subtle and they were completely absent in this game. Maybe this had to do with the developers being outsourced and lacked some insider info? By x4 it becomes obvious
Your trying to show the game in historical context really won out on this one, even I don't really think about Mega Man x3 as a multiplatorm game, but I guess you are right, it technically was, even if I don't think they were being worked on simultaneously, it's obvious that it wasn't getting as much attention as the other games were for various reasons. I agree that I like the art/backgrounds of the game for the most part, it does look a lot darker, but I think mmx2 really hit on the bright atmosphere and that was probably harder to actually make. Music, eh, I don't think x3's soundtrack is as bad as others, but it's definitely a step down vs 1 and 2. Another thing I'd add is that the enemies take A TON of hits AND they deal a ton of damage, and that makes the beginning of the game much more challenging and even though I'm usually for added challenge, not when it's lazy like that. I basically agree with everything you've said, I'd still give it a solid 8/10, I'd give it a 9/10 but 8 is correct
Thanks! Yeah, it's weird because it looks like a snes game, but the saturn and ps1 versions came out so close by. The damage from enemies is crazy in this one. I agree that challenge is great, but this was a weird way to implement it.
I remember when I played this game as a kid I thought it was the coolest because of all the secrets and pickups scattered everywhere. As I got older I heard everyone saying you could skip this one and that it was bad so I just ignored the game and believed everyone. Just a week ago I decided to pick it back up and had a blast. I get the game is hardly perfect, but what game is? I really appreciate it's attempts to further innovate upon the existing X formula and there really isn't any aspect of the game I find to be all that offensive like maybe some later X games. I'd take X1 and X2 over it but it's honestly a perfectly good game and I feel it was a good way to cap off the original SNES styled X games. Also, as usual I really enjoyed this review, you always do a great job with being somewhat unbiased and taking a look at the game from both a historical, and modern perspective. I've gotten a lot of insight into these games I've played many times before just from your videos alone. So keep it up, you've been doing a great job!
Yeah, this game definitely isn't bad. It's got a lot of good qualities. X1 and X2 were hard acts to follow. Thanks! I appreciate the positive feedback!
I have absolutely loved this review series...like, if you have a Patreon, link it and I WILL SUPPORT IT...and have to wonder, can we still be looking forward to an X4 review? Because that is probably my sentimental favorite of the series, and I would love to hear your thoughts on it, whatever they may be.
Vile is found somewhere else, pretty hidden but set in a way you might find him accidentaly Also the doppler stages change slightly if you kill the nigtmare police with one of their weaknesses (bit and byte both have two each)
did you know... the reason the buster upgrade in this game svcks is because a programming error? well, several... you see in mega man games the damage an enemy receives from a weapon is determined by a table hardcoded in the rom, index 0 is normal shot, index 1 is running shot, index 2 is half charged buster, index 3 is fully charged buster, index 4 is second buster and indexes 5 and 6 go unused. in mmx3 they recycled these tables and asigned the upgraded level buster to index 6 and spread buster to 6, BUT THEY FORGOT TO PUT THE RIGHT VALUES, thats why the regular buster does regular and the upgraded buster appears to do LESS damage, in fact, level 1 buster (the 2 smalls balls) do 0 damage to some enemies, yes, ZERO, also they f-ed up the z saber damage too, the saber was meant to be as powerful as zero s but they assigned the wrong damage index (the mmx2 shryoryken i think) and thats why the saber when used by megaman kills bosses with 2 or 1 hits but not always and not consistenly
This game is so mediocre, but the soundtrack slaps 😭 You can definitely feel that this game was outsourced. Feels like a huge step down from X2 in terms of quality and polish. The bosses especially, their sprites and lack of animations look so cheap. Not to mention how bad the AI is. Enemy variety is abysmal. Basically the same 4 enemies in every stage placed in unimaginative ways. The contact damage is ridiculously high while projectiles usually do one damage lol. AT LEAST its better than X5 though LOL.
I have to guess the contact damage is so absurd because of the team's experience with the classic series (where the contact damage is usually very high) through the gameboy games mentioned at the start of the video, also made by them (except megaman II)
Mega Man X3 is the game that brought me to the mega man franchise and made me a mega man fan Playing it for the first time trully was a unique experience
This game had some decent new ideas for the series, such as; being able to play as Zero, multiple ride armors, ways to customize X, some actions affecting other stages, alternate bosses in Doppler's castle. They just were not executed well. The stages and music did get pretty monotonous, and the Mavericks were pretty forgettable.
X3 is a jumbled mess with a LOT of things not being well implemented. I can go on with the things I dislike, but it's so hard to NOT like this game as it's a nice and hot mess. X3 just really had that cool darker look and just a heavier sounding ost. As opposed to you I LOVED the vertical-dash as it provided more ways to tricky platforming. It just also has a lot of fun collectibles (but screw ride armors as they're really useless) like the GOLD ARMOR and Zero's Z-Saber! There exists an awesome ROM HACK (Zero Project) that fixed a lot of problems and makes Zero fully playable!
Yeah, I agree, it's a lovable hot mess. I just couldn't get used to the up-dash. The Z-Saber and Gold Armor look pretty cool; I just felt like I needed to finish x3 and move on to x4.
Till this day, this is my go to megaman game. I prefer this over any other mm game they came out with since. Mmx8 demake, may be better but has not surpassed x3 yet due to its incompletion
I already commented but I want to talk about the Sigma fight. I agree that it’s a horrible fight and extremely awkward. I get that it’s the final boss but it’s not fun at all like the other Sigma fights. You’re supposed to shoot Sigma in the exhaust ports NOT the head (the head is a false weakness). He’s a lot easier if you use the Z saber (I think he dies in 3 hits to it).
Here is my honest and Brutal opinion on X3. Mega Man X3 is a mediocre Mega Man game. First things first, this is someone a lot of casually players won't notice, but seasoned ones like I will. Mega Man X3 lacks appartment enemy diversity. The total number of enemies in Mega Man X3 are 30. However, only 5 or 6 of them are used for the most part. This is not Mario where only Goombas, Koopa Troopas and Piranha Plants are used. This is Mega Man and it should have adequate Apparent enemy diversity. My second problem with the game is it's lackluster appeal. The game for the most part looks kinda ugly. And even the music sounds so boring. My third problem is the fact that this game lacks creativity. Almost none of the Maverick stages have unique set pieces. Which makes the game feel very lackluster. Combined with the lack of apparent enemy diversity, the stages feel very samey. And these stages are long so the damage is doubled it that regards. If you sent me a picture of X3 and asked me what stage this is, chances are I won't be able to tell. To add insult to the injury, the same applies to the Mavericks. Almost all Mavericks just walk left to right and nothing else. To give where credit is due, the final stages are good. My fourth problem is it's artificial difficulty. Some people say Artificial difficulty means where you take hit or even die for not knowing a thing. No! Artificial difficulty can also paint itself fair. Like in X3. In X3, at the start of the game, the enemies do way too much damage than they should. Like each and every enemy can kill you in three hits. This makes the game more difficult than it should. My fifth problem is the amount of backtracking. I was never fan of items locked behind another Items. Games like Rock n Roll cemented my views. But X3 is filled to the brim with these type of things. 5/8 stages are to be visited at least twice to get a power up. This just makes the game feel longer than it really is. A my final problem might just be me, but X3 feels very very slow. The Brutality, the boring nature etc. My score: 4.0/10.0
I get it. It's def my least favorite of the x games so far (though I've heard they really drop off after x4, which I'm playing now). The enemy variety is definitely lacking, and the difficulty feels really off. I agree that the game looks and sounds kind of ugly, but sometimes that ugliness works for me in a grimy/edgy way (Toxic Seahorse's level is probably the best example). For me the ugliest thing is the blaster power up. The sprite doesn't fit on X's sprite, and I never got used to it.
I agree with all takes except the stages feeling samey and the music. I think the whole tile in background design is good and distinctive enough. Both X2 and X3's soundtracks are inferior to X1, but X3 definitely is better and heavier than most of X2.
X3 wasn't developed by Capcom since they were busy with developing games for the 32-bit systems. Minakuchi Engineering handled the game. Explains why the game lacks the polish that X1, X2, and X4 has.
When I was a kid I didn’t even know this came out I went from x2 straight to x4. No marketing. I love the x series owned every game except this one 🤦♂️.
I just beat it tonight! I'm not sure when the review will be up. It's going to take me a while to write, record, and edit it. I tried some new stuff on the channel this summer, and those things didn't really succeed the way I had hoped, so I'm planning on going back to Mega Man for a while. I'm also still learning some game dev, so my free time is really split.
After watching your review it seems like you are WAY too gracious in the favor of the game by rating it 7,5/10. Also.... covering 1/2 of the video for the STORY of a Mega Man game? Does someone really care so much for the story in those games? And that being the best thing about the game doesn't speak for it either. If a majority of (Buster) upgrades, collectibles, enemy design, level design and the fiddly "up jump" simply aren't fun and frustrating, this game just can't be "good".
I will never understand why people love x2 and hate x3. For me it is the exact difference. The only good thing in x2 is the maverick hunters and the zero parts. The music SUCKED in x2. The Robotmasters in x2 were all kinda boring, compared to the Robotmasters in X3 i just prefer the x3 ones. Was Vile even in X2? Also on the PC and i guess PSX all Robotmasters in X3 had an Anime Intro. How cool is that?
Funnily enough the final form of Sigma is harder with the upgraded buster, your regular full charged buster hits sigma's head way better.
MM X3's soundtrack is just too good. 🥰
Yeah, there are some great tracks.
Great review. This is one of my favourite X games alongside X2 and X4, but I can't deny its flaws.
@@MeguhFan try giving it another go some time. Despite being a mess it's one of those games that some people say it grows on them.
@@MeguhFanplease bind the dash to L button it looks like your using it on A 😭
@@oneboxboi1091 Yeah, I was using A. I'll see about switching to L in for x4.
@@MeguhFan you gotta replay the snes games with L button as dash it is SO much more fun I can’t imagine playing with A
Till this day, this is my go to megaman game.
Oh wow! I just thought the head's hitbox was off. Yeah, it's a disappointing final fight.
*yawns*
@@MeguhFan "MegaFan" and you never played these games before? What
I agree with all takes except the stages feeling samey and the music. I think the whole tile in background design is good and distinctive enough.
Both X2 and X3's soundtracks are inferior to X1, but X3 definitely is better and heavier than most of X2.
The ROM patch for this one fixes a lot of issues with it, since X3 really was basically released unfinished.
fixes a lot of thing but breaks others
X3 wasn't developed by Capcom since they were busy with developing games for the 32-bit systems. Minakuchi Engineering handled the game. Explains why the game lacks the polish that X1, X2, and X4 has.
Then why did the logo appear there?
all they had to do was make zero playable, they released a half baked game with a very high price tag
The ice pushes you down the hill, always iirc. At least it did on snes
Yeah, with a lot of force.
@@MeguhFan my childhood head canon was that X was REALLY heavy and his boots are REALLY flat lmao
@@SECONDQUEST Ha ha! That's hilarious. The boots do look really heavy.
I like x3. Fun game. Cool to play as zero
Yeah, it was cool, I just wish I could get him back after I died using him.
When I was a kid I didn’t even know this came out I went from x2 straight to x4. No marketing. I love the x series owned every game except this one 🤦♂️.
Sonic 3 & Knuckles is widely considered to be the best game in the Sonic series so that's not always true about retro series.
Oh letting him die gives you the worst ending.
Yeah, I let Zero die, so I got the worst ending.
how about megaman x4
I just beat it tonight! I'm not sure when the review will be up. It's going to take me a while to write, record, and edit it. I tried some new stuff on the channel this summer, and those things didn't really succeed the way I had hoped, so I'm planning on going back to Mega Man for a while. I'm also still learning some game dev, so my free time is really split.
I felt like MegaMan two and MegaMan three were much better games than X2 and X.3… MegaMan, X, by itself, however, is in a league of its own
X3 is my favourite X game
After watching your review it seems like you are WAY too gracious in the favor of the game by rating it 7,5/10. Also.... covering 1/2 of the video for the STORY of a Mega Man game? Does someone really care so much for the story in those games? And that being the best thing about the game doesn't speak for it either. If a majority of (Buster) upgrades, collectibles, enemy design, level design and the fiddly "up jump" simply aren't fun and frustrating, this game just can't be "good".
The long corridors made this one so dull compared to the rest of the classic series
Hidden gem? Who doesn’t know about mega man
I will never understand why people love x2 and hate x3.
It’s boring as fuck
