In Tromso, Norway the Aurora Borealis come out quite often. And when they do, photographers head out chasing them. However, I've gotten pretty good at predicting the northern lights and knowing where to photograph them.
In this photography video I share my tips on how to photograph the northern lights.
The apps I used to prepare for this Northern lights photo shoot in Norway were Aurora Pro, MeteoEarth, and Light Pollution Map.

Plz make video for wb & were to focus
Pitty I missed that day of the trip ...Better Luck next time!!!
Shot them twice, both this year. Neither very visible to the eye and Yup I did the 30second mistake and made a big snot blob. But photography is all about learning, right?
@@ankitchaudhary356 manually focus on a star, use wb between ~3400-4400K and see what you like best.
Was in Tromso last year, The biggest solar storm in years, got amazing pictures. The lights are almost spiritual, sat in the mountains on the snow in total darkness for hours in -15C.
Dream of mine... one day!
Saw them it scotland a few weeks ago, but nothing spectacular.
It's a good bit of luck to catch them in Scotland as it's usually so cloudy! Hopefully you get to see a big show at some point!
Brendan van Son one day!
Thanks for Subbing by the way! Means a lot! 👍
I actually saw them in Northern Minnesota when I was about 9 years old (1960) - went camping on "The Lake of the Woods" and the Northern Lights were amazing - a memory I will have the rest of my life!
Was struggling with editing my northern light photos (also taken near Tromso), so that was really helpful Brandan, thanks!
Glad it helped!
When in Iceland I found the northern lights very difficult to photograph as I was not prepared for how fast they move. Great video Brendan has helped me a lot.
Yeah, it gets people all the time. They are so so fast!
Definitely on my photography bucket list !! Cheers for the video Brendan!
gotta say this video is Informative and straight to the point. although I think you only mentioned two apps.
Fortunate to have witnessed northern lights several times. The most spectacular was near Ungava Bay (Kuujjuaq) in northern Quebec. Literally above my head, I thought I was in another universe! Always enjoy your videos, Thanks!
It's crazy when they really go off, isn't it?
Never get tired of seeing the Northern Lights. I mentioned I lived in Iceland for 18 months back in the 80's and got to see them a few times while I was there. I'm sitting here watch you edit in Lightroom and here I just switched over to Affinity Photo . 😆 (cutting back on monthly fees)
'Ninja turtle green' wooot?
That clears it all up haha. Thumbs up.
Great information! Thanks for all the tips/tricks. Now, I just need to get myself somewhere that I can see the Northern Lights. :)
I have yet to see the Northern Lights, but it is one of my dreams! Thank you for these tips!
I like how you pop up in different parts of the world every other video
What a really helpful vlog. I'm off to the Isle of Skye in just over 2 weeks and am really hopeful that we will get to see the Northern Lights whilst we're there. To be able to catch an image of them would be the icing on the cake. I've only ever seen them once before - whilst on a flight back from Calgary last September! I have downloaded the apps already and thanks for the tips on editing too Brendan.
Was just in Tromso a few weeks ago and saw them on back to back nights.. spectacular
They're incredible, aren't they??
@@BrendanvanSon yeah it was a bucket list item for my wife.. First night we were about 15 miles from Finland and saw them overlooking a valley which made for a great scene. Next night we were on a boat in a fjord and they exploded over us even brighter than the night before. 3rd night.. completely skunked. :-) www.flickr.com/photos/bambakophobia/47395449051
I was in Tromso in February 2013 for 2 nights but I was not so lucky but the day shoots was really nice. It is an nice little island.
Went to Tromsø last week, I had to drive 3h up to Finland in a snow storm to find a clear sky. I use the app windy for the weather forecast, I pretty accurate as well.
Thanks for the tips edit!
Thanks for the LPM app tip - much more convenient than what I used before... just come back from a month in Lofoten, so had some amazing nights under the green goddess 💚
Yes, Lpm is great. Simple but really good
Great video from my home town Tromso and the best location to chase the northern lights 🇧🇻😍👏 I'm so happy I can see and chase the northern lights every year from september until april. I got 5 different favourite locations in and nearby Tromso city. Where were you located during your stay? 😊 Let's go chase the lights together if you come back after the pandemic is over. I'll take you on a free tour and if you want you can stay at my apartment for free as well 😊
Amazingly we could see the Northern Lights from Dartmoor, Devon in the UK a few years ago, the first time I had seen them - obviously not as awesome as from Norway - that's next on my list!
This is so full of useful information and great images. Thanks very much.
Glad you liked it Wendy!
Would love to see the Northern Lights someday.. Really love to.. I live in Holland, and they are so rare here.. On March 22 and March 23 they should have been visible here.. Should have been, because of course, it was as cloudy as it can possibly get..
Couldn't find MeteoEarth on Google Play Store.
Hi,
Great tips :)
I am planning to buy Canon Eos Rp.
Did you have problems with Canon EOS RP in Norway?
Since it is not weather sealed I was wondering if this would be a problem if I would take it for a Northern lights trip.
Were lucky to live in a dark area of Aberdeenshire Scotland and I can see them from my house 😀 I don’t even need to go outside just stick my camera out the upstairs window😂😂😂. The Aurora app is fab great vid be great to get a few tips on how to focus in night photography.
So cool to see them from your house! I remember seeing them as a kid in Canada from my back yard.
This is what we can see flic.kr/p/2ewvnEu not as epic as Norway but still amazing to see 😀
Thank you bro
My Pleasure!
excellent vlog brendan
Thanks buddy!
@@BrendanvanSon maybe get chance to meet up next time your in the uk if you up in the lakes
Btw MeteoEarth is nowhere to be found in Australian Google Apps.
MeteoGroup only lists 'WeatherPro' here and their website (MeteoGroup.com) only points to this.
Maybe a re-badge or is that app discontinued?
The app is still there in Europe. Strange. Maybe a copyright conflict on Australia?
@@BrendanvanSon thanks for checking.
@@BrendanvanSon Please delete this if it conflicts with something and I also won't take any responsibility if something goes wrong as this is not the official download (at your own risk but worked for me) managed to do 3rd party download apk for Android: apkpure.com/meteoearth/com.mg.meteoearth/download?from=details
Is the "Future" in Santiago, Chile?
Nice photo!
Thanks Jen!
Hi bud, just wondering were I can get one of your #bvssquad hats please, and how do you manage to do your time lapse so smoothly thanks
The hats will come up for sale again in a couple months when I do a new batch.
The time lapse was all done in camera on the Canon RP in manual.
BAWSE!
😍👍
