  • Find out how to photograph the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights) using a DSLR or iPhone. On 26th February 2023 we had an amazing display of the Northern Lights. It was the brightest aurora I've ever seen and thanks to AuroraWatch app I was ready with my camera. Find out the settings I used on my Nikon D7200 DLSR and iPhone to capture this amazing light show.

I’ll tell you a funny story, about 18 years ago we moved to the Isle of Skye, we came from a large town, flooded with light pollution. We knew nothing about the northern lights, nothing. One night, we were sat in our lounge & the sky suddenly went green & seemed to be moving towards us 😳 I have to say it seemed quite frightening at the time, we thought the Martians 👽 had landed 🤣🤣 Em 💜

I've witnessed a solar eclipse in Tennessee, a stunning meteor shower in a dark sky location in central Washington and a month of 24 hour daylight in Alaska but have never been under the aurora. After reading Philip Pullman's "His Dark Materials" books long ago (and watching the recent TV adaptation) this is one of the things that is at the top of my list.

    WOW! Those reds! Fantastic job.
I grew up far enough north to have seen several ABs, but never reds like what you two photographed.
Two most unusual times for me were once in the Philippines in 90 or 91, and one of the times from my home. The Philippines because it was so far south. The one from my home because it looked like a waterfall coming from the moon and the rest of the sky was covered in ribbons.

I have been so lucky to see the aurora in Iceland last year, it's the most beautiful natural event I have ever seen, I need to rent a cabin somewhere north for a month haha.
Does the aurora happens normally in north Scotland? or it's visible just when it's really strong?
