  • With Bird Flu still keeping our chickens in lockdown, we decided to build a huge chicken run to give our hens some extra space and a sense of freedom during the restrictions. Once the fence is completed and netting added to stop wild birds entering we can let the chickens out.

    As someone who has also tried putting up fencing you did a great job there! Those post tanners are very heavy and even in good soil it’s very difficult to get posts in straight!! Great job boys 😊

    It’s a beautiful fence! Where we live in Nova Scotia we have a LOT of rocks. Sometimes you have to reposition a post several times to find a place to drive it in. Fences here are never straight or even spaced. ❤❤

    Your Chickens will be so happy to have that great big run. Shaun looks like he's been building fences all his life. Watching him reminded me of helping my dad build fences mumblty years ago. Ours were barbed wire fences for the cows. Post hole diggers, fencing pliers, wirestretches -- every 10 year old girl's favorite toys! LOL! Hugs for all of you.💖💖💖💖

    Useful stuff chicken wire - ideal for stopping the neighbouring sheep getting stuck after pushing their heads through the holes in the deer fence to get at our grass.

    Chicken Run the title reminds me of the movie Chicken Run Colin where Mr Tweedy said chickens go in pie's come out 🤣 I think Shaun done a good job I'll give it a 10 out of 10 Shaun

    I live in rocky Connecticut where digging holes requires a crowbar. I am very sympathetic to fence posts that aren't exactly plumb. Enjoy!

    We have Indian Runner ducks on our farm. Teye come in a range of colours and are very comical to watch. They also lay heaps of eggs which are great for baking.

    The coop extension is just an excuse for some more boys toys though…….confess. Actually I love the one that staples round rings. I could use one of those myself.

    I absolutely adore everything about your new life!! Please keep posting videos. I do have a question though, do you have problems with critters like foxes and such digging under the fence to get at your chickens? That's an issue in our area, foxes, coyotes, and hawks.

    Good for you. As a child, I was lucky enough to live in a rental cottage on a lovely farm/estate. Even though it was manicured to the teeth, we still had loads of maintenance attend to. Any kind of construction can be a physical challenge and the hens will be safe. Cluck-cluck girls. PS~What was that white bell shaped flower?

    I lived on a mountain side in S Wales and for every bucket I dug up, 3/4 was stone!!!

    Shaun, you are doing a great job with the fence. Our yard is similar, very uneven and stumps and rocks. We had somebody professional to build our fence. Your fence will be perfect for the chickens. I must say, I am excited about you all possibly getting ducks. I love ducks too. Nice video. Love the humor. You fellas take care.

    Wish I were there with my posthole digger......I have a porthole pounder like yours but not as large for the metal fencing I use in the garden for trellises etc.. my shoulders hurts just watching you Shaun. But a job well done..lucky ducks.....oh, ....I mean chickens....

    The new fence is just terrific! We have a lot of rock in our yard, so we know how hard it is to set posts. But… you may think you’re done with the chicken fence and yard. Well, it’s never quite done. I’ve had backyard chickens for over 20 years and there is always something that needs doing. Keep up the good work you two!

    Thanks! I didn't know about those round staples!! Do you have any Speckled Sussex hens? They are the most busybody hens I have. They have to keep an eye on everything you do, while their expression implies you aren't doing it quite right. And, they are good looking! Good birds.
