@@edbuell3181 Mid wipe, that's really weird! Does it do it no matter what setting your wipers are on? (Intermittent, Normal continuous, fast wipe for heavy rain).
@@edbuell3181 my Vauxhall combo's wipers are stopping mid wipe, but only on the intermittent setting. I need to change to continuous setting to get them moving again. They always stop vertically on intermittent. Oddly, I have to time turning the continuous wipe off at the same vertical point they jam at on intermittent. In my 50 years of driving many older vehicles this is the first time I've had wipers that did not work and of course I was driving at night during a major downpour. My current ride is a babied 20 year old with low miles. Thanks for showing me where to start since an average repair shop may not even have the correct parts immediately available. I'm a tiny woman but with the right knowledge I can still look around and turn a wrench when I have to.

The bestttttttt video on this hands down and i never ever comment on youtube! Very informative i feel like a professional on this now i cant wait to work on my windshield tmmry its going to storm real bad here for 4 days so clock is ticking lol thank you so much
Hi Phil. The first symptom I had with my wipers was that they were running very slowly before blowing the fuse. It did in fact be down to be a mechanism that was stiff from old grease.
Hi, thanks for the comment! Yep, that's a really good point regarding the slow wipers. As you said, a stiff mechanism puts extra load on the wiper motor and blows the fuse BUT if you ignore it or keep replacing the fuse, then it can also cause the motor to fail. I'll make your comment a STICKY, so that others see it!
What a superb video. Wish I'd seen this a week ago. One of the ball joints popped off the wiper linkage on my suzuki swift. Played around with tying it up which worked for a while but then I decided to 'repair' the said ball joint by drilling a hole and putting in a locking pin to keep the 2 parts fixed together. I had to take the linkage off as you can imagine but when I went to put it all back together, the wipers started acting wierd; not going all the way, starting/stopping etc. No intermittent wiping. I suspect the switch as I still have constant and high. But since you pretty much covered everything here, I'm going to give the motor a good checking over as well.
Hi @bittertruth6575 Sounds like you have had a good battle with it already! Thanks, I tried to cover all of the most common faults. Yeah, once your ball joint pops out, it is usually because the "socket" part is worn and you'll have a lot of trouble making it stay in there. If it helps, you can often pick up a 2nd hand motor and mechanism from Ebay and just use the parts you need. Also, always worth getting a price for the part from the dealer, sometimes they are more reasonably priced then you would think! Good luck! Thanks, Phil
My wipers died right when it suddenly started to downpour a lot of rain and with a lot of traffic...I had to pull off on a side road as soon as I could and wait for the rain to stop. The wipers haven't worked since, so now I have a project to get done, troubleshooting and then possibly a motor replacement, my vehicle is a bit different than what you show here but it gives me ideas of what to look for and what the job is going to be like, should I find I need to pull the motor and replace it. 👍
aw man, that's always when things go wrong, when you need them most! Glad the video gave you a few things to look at, hope you get it sorted! 👍 Cheers, Phil
@@ReviveMyRide hello I installed a new wiper motor and they worked for 10 minutes or so and they just stopped working. Any advice on what I should try next. Thank you.
@@ThisStrangePlace22 At 06:58 in the video, I show that the mechanism needs to be very free to move. The reason is that if the mechanism is tight, then the motor has to work very hard and this can burn the motor out. Was your mechanism ok? If the motor has stopped working again, it's important to understand why. So, it's best to take it from the top as if it is a new problem. as shown in the video, start from the beginning and work your way through it, starting with checking to see if it is getting power to it etc. Hope that helps. Thanks, Phil
Nice video. I have a Touran 03 and the wipers start but stop again a second later, just as if something was blocking them. Both of them move, then return. Fuses are OK, washer fluid ok, nothing is blocking them.. I suspect arm mechanism then?
Yep, it's possible that the mechanism is very stiff. This will eventually burn out the motor, so best to tackle it as soon as you can. It is a bit of faffing about through! Another possibility is that the mechanism inside the motor is damaged, see 6:10 in the video, sometimes the "worm drive" can chew the teeth off of the nylon drive wheel. Good luck with it! Cheers, Phil
@@ReviveMyRide Dismantled both and gave them a clean and new grease. One worked, the other one was broken. So I ordered a new one. Let's hope it works!
I think you missed to check the wipers control unit under the glove box. Sometimes the relays there have burned contacts that makes the wipers to remain on or completely off.
Hi Joseph, thanks for taking the time to comment! Yep, that’s a really good point, depending on your symptoms, the cause could quite easily be the relays and well worth checking as well. Thanks, Phil
some months ago my wipers failed at both on speeds and on intermittent. The 'push' one-wipe/washer mechanism still worked so I made do with that until it failed the other day. fuse good. before failing there was no indication of the motor labouring. Everything else on the switch (steering column stick) works fine but I'm wondering if the switches can fail like this.
Wow, that's a weird one! what did you do to fix it? I would have started by testing at the motor end: With the switch on intermittent, then on continuous etc, was I getting power to the motor...
@@ReviveMyRide By happy coincidence I fixed it later the same day that I commented here. I removed the switch and found three of the four wires leaving the end of the stalk were broken. I tried to replace their full lengths by dismantling the rotating end of the stalk but gave up trying to find the terminals for them after about an hour of frustrating attempts to separate the switch parts. Instead, I carefully drilled a hole into the stalk and looped the broken ends through it so I had enough broken end to work with. I soldered them to new wires, pushed them through the hole to the lower end of the stalk and connected them to the terminals inisde the hidden body of the swtich. It all works fine now although, despite taking care to re-position the steering wheel correctly, and disconnecting the battery, I have an ESP warning light now. I tried the lock-to-lock reset, and that appeared to work for a while, but the light is back on. Those wires are tiny (I believe they carry control signals rather than working load currents) and they emerge from the stalk end on a tight bend and wrap tightly around the base of the switch. My car's 17 years old and so I presume the stresses just build up over the years until they snap.

Hi, I assume you checked the bonnet switches as shown in the video? Remember that many Mercedes cars have two bonnet latches and so sometimes they have two switches as well. I’m afraid if you check the bonnet switches and they are working properly and the wipers still don’t work, then you will need to start tracing electrical power. Is it getting to the wiper switch, if so, is it arriving at the wiper motor etc.
@@miniossanfran5748 Hi, yes, that is what I would guess.
