I'm laughing and crying at the same time. You took me back to my high school days. Momma would take me to fabric shops. We would buy any and everything we wanted. Daddy would write the check, no questions asked. "It's fine, Girls. You're not spending my money on booze or gambling." They were so wonderful. Thanks for taking me there.
Awww! That's adorable! I used to tell my mom something very similar whenever she'd question the lists of books I wanted - at least they were just books!
I love estate sales because I feel like I get to know the person just by looking at what they treasured. I like nothing more than finding an "old lady sewing basket" filled with their things and diving in and seeing what they loved, what tools they used, little scraps of projects and notes. It's like an amazing time capsule. I'm so glad you got to experience it!
These is the type of fabric store inventory I remember. My mother and grandmother were professional seamstress. My mother sewed most of my clothes when I was growing up. Seeing these drawers of patterns triggered all my memories of going to pick out things I wanted her to make. Thank you for sharing this ❤
This is both delightful and incredibly sad. I hope Ms Ruth lived a long happy life. Can't imagine not being able to do what I love for whatever reason, must've been heart-wrenching for her. Thank you for sharing this and shouting out other creators!
How exciting! I love your husband's response. It's so much like my husband's response when I went to the fabric store recently for "some fabric" and came home with 20 yards.
I just found your channel and am blown away by so many things. First of all, as a 68 year old lady I am so impressed by the fact that there’s a younger generation who appreciates all of this. I can’t help thinking how the lady who owned all of this would feel to have the three young ladies come in and appreciate the inventory so much. Secondly, my imagination is going crazy thinking of all the creations that will come out of this stock for many years to come. And…I’m so impressed with all the hard work that the seller has done to get all of the items displayed and ready for sale. My grandmother was a dressmaker and I remember when I was a very little girl watching her make clothes for ladies. They’d come in with a bag of fabric, notions, and a pattern and a week or so later they’d come pick up a beautiful dress on a hanger. My grandmother passed away when I was 8 so these memories come from the late 50’s and early 60’s which is an era with, in my opinion, some very beautiful styles. My favorites were when she’d make the net evening gowns with layers of tiny ruffles. One day I’ll retire and have time to sew again. When that happens I’m going to look for your shop on eBay and probably spend way too much money.
I was actually alive in 1969, at ten years old. I turned 11 on December 1 of 1969. The fashions were a lot of fun. I remember I had a vinyl mini-dress plus a crocheted mini-skirt with a matching crocheted vest. BTW, my middle name and Saint’s name: Ruth
You bet I have footage of you finding that fabric that is going to come up in my video! This was such a lovely video, it is fun to see Ms. Ester on camera for the interview and the outtakes killed me!
This takes me back to being a teen in the 60’s and mom making all my clothes. She made all my suits, dresses and matching coats(!) when I moved to San Francisco and got my first office job in 1966. Now I’m going to watch all your other videos❤️
So much goodness. Reminds me of going to our fabric store as a child with my mum to choose patterns and fabrics, notions etc. A magical place of dream dresses
Oh my god I LOVE THIS. I'm going to have to rewatch just to absorb all the wonderful things you saw! And Miss Ruth's friend who you talked to speaks so much like my grandmother, who passed away 12 years ago. I'm crying 😭😭
This is incredible. And kind of heartbreaking that this kind of person with clearly such immense talent and skill to make people’s wardrobes from scratch got to a point they walked away (although to be fair it sounds like she did it for decades so maybe she was happy to be done!). And I think it’s so sad that this sort of business doesn’t exist anymore because it’s all about fast fashion to most people nowadays who don’t appreciate clothes and the time and effort and skill it takes to make them and that they are only cheap because of sweatshops basically. There must have been thousands of Miss Ruths and similar all over the world who were respected business people and now they essentially don’t exist. That’s just so sad to me. But it’s so beyond wonderful that you got to tell her story and talk to her friend. And now that you get to experience and purchase this treasure trove of fabrics and patterns and notions is fabulous!
Remember that bumper sticker, "She who dies with most fabric wins." I have tears in my eyes watching this. I'll bet much of that fabric and inventory was made in the USA.
I live in SC & knew nothing about this! I'm heartbroken that I missed out on all these vintage treasures! But glad you were able to give them a good home.
Next week, promise! I may have to do two videos, one for patterns and one for fabric. But the fabric is DEFINITELY up first, because there is SO much of it!

You are a riot! I just discovered your channel. I recall a sewing shop near me going out of business some years back. I am still using items today that I bought way back then, but your estate sale experience takes the cake!! I felt like I was right there with you oohing, awing, bargaining and haggling too, lol. Another cool advantage I find with vintage estate sales, hardly any item is a 'reproduction' it's all true to that era (as real as it gets) and yours for the picking-Thanks for sharing!

This is like the vintage sewist equivalent of that apartment in Paris that hadn't been touch since World War II...I have often said that I would selfishly use a time machine to shop and watch plays with my favorite actors and I fell like you found your personal time machine setting.
Wow! How did you find this place? I would love to check out the patterns; fabric too, but I really don't need any 😜. You have a great sense of humor. I watched the haul (part 2) first, so I had to watch the story behind it. 😁
That psichodelic fabric peaking at the end of the video OMG i would die to have it it's beatiful! and it looks so well conservated!, you surely found a goldmine there and you probably think the trip was totally worh it
Fabric and such sitting for 30-40 years, does it retain their strength & color? My MIL recently left behind a lot of material & patterns. I am encouraged to take what I can use, but I am afraid of it falling apart in the wash like her lace kitchen curtains started to do.

My three girls! LOVE this video!
Thank you Sally!
This is like the vintage sewist equivalent of that apartment in Paris that hadn't been touch since World War II...I have often said that I would selfishly use a time machine to shop and watch plays with my favorite actors and I fell like you found your personal time machine setting.
We had a turkey commit suicide on our Suburban in Spartanburg, so I can relate.
OH NO! 😂
So cool!!
Thank you! It was amazing!
That is exciting.
The entire time I was buzzing!
Man, did you ever get those patterns? I'm over here drooling over the potential machines.
Wow! How did you find this place? I would love to check out the patterns; fabric too, but I really don't need any 😜. You have a great sense of humor. I watched the haul (part 2) first, so I had to watch the story behind it. 😁
Oh my goodness. Oh my goodness!!!
That was my mantra while digging I was just overwhelmed and TOO HAPPY!
I would buy ALL the bias tape and seam tapes! I may have a problem 😊
That psichodelic fabric peaking at the end of the video OMG i would die to have it it's beatiful! and it looks so well conservated!, you surely found a goldmine there and you probably think the trip was totally worh it
There are SO MANY good pyschedelic prints! I will so them in better quality in the next video.
Personally, I like the Sewing Pattern Marquise.
Love it!
It was SO fantastic!
My family hit a wild turkey on Thanksgiving and it bounced on the road and hop/flew away!
Fabric and such sitting for 30-40 years, does it retain their strength & color? My MIL recently left behind a lot of material & patterns. I am encouraged to take what I can use, but I am afraid of it falling apart in the wash like her lace kitchen curtains started to do.
Amazing,,,,,😃
Right!! It was amazing!
