DO NOT Sell Graded Sports Cards to GameStop

- This week, Chris takes a pile of graded sports cards to GameStop to see what they'll offer. These slabs did not get the offer expected. Especially after seeing so many others experience getting pretty fair offers of their sports or pokemon cards.
Pop 6000 on a base 2019 Mosaic LeBron is crazy. Just shows you all the insanity that was happening during the boom a few years ago and why PSA had to shut down. So many people just sending in junk.
Super good point. Probably going to make a video on junk wax soon
Exactly
I was today years old when I found out Gamestop buys sports cards.
Haha totally a new thing don’t worry
Probably the prices are the future for these cards. We are in the slab junk era. Unless your keeping it for yourself it is stupid to grade a $1 or $2 base cards bc 1000s are doing samething.
I’m with you. And I’ve made that mistake myself, I think it’s a lesson Lots of people need to learn.
I mean a lesson to learn that a $1 card graded a PSA 10 makes no difference. Why grade these types of cards to begin with?
@@kimtieka5645 well you have to be smart, selective. Example: I recently graded a 1998 Allen Iverson Gold Medallion from Fleer Ultra. Raw it’s a $5 card maybe. Grading it might seem silly. But it’s 90s stuff, not often in great shape. Mine was. Came back a PSA 9, worth $100 or so in that grade.
@kimtieka5645 Before the price went up, I'd get about 30 or so base, prizms, rainbow foils ect. graded of the top players and hand them out at Halloween kids love them, and now I'll send an order to gma for that gotta get the next generation interested
@@invaderj815 that’s awesome good call man!
My wife is a manager at Gamestop and they are partnering with PSA. They are offering a little more for Pokémon cards. I have seen them pay above average for Pokemon but not sports cards. Right now, since it being new they are only in buy mode. They are only selling them online! My wife's store will be one of the first to start selling them in store! They are moving away from selling brand new game system as one of their primary things cause they next to nothing on them. That's why they push used systems and games cause that's the bread and butter! Gamestop wants to eventually go into all collectible trading (buy and sell).
I feel I’ve seen the same better offers for pokemon. Confirmed partnership with PSA??
Will they start to carry and sell wax?
@@rickster_88 it seems a possibility. They already have a small selection of blasters. Curious if they’d get into hobby.
Lol manager at gamestop congrats hope u just got married at 18
dude your wife is a manager at gamestop? thats awesome i bet you get a lot of gamer swag
How were the gamestop employee checking comps? Using 130point and ebay sold listings?
Some automated database in their system. I think they pull comps from multiple sources into some GameStop algorithm
I wouldn't sell my games to gamestop. You're talking about selling sports cards LMFAO
And that’s pretty much what happened. Laughable offers. Gotta test the system though
They'll give you 5 dollars store credit for a lebron rookie

@@jaroslawratajkowski3901 Sell them yourself for 4x - 10x the price GME will give you. That's the smart non lazy way.
@@jaroslawratajkowski3901 If there so "WORTHLESS" then why does gamestop want them????????????????????????? Stay in school
I'd still like to know what they are doing with these cards? Were there PSA slabs there to buy?
Nothing in store, from what I hear there may be some sort of option to buy it online at their website. But I have a feeling there’s an investor behind it somewhere, but that’s just my hunch. That there’s some larger retailer that’s actually in the hobby behind it.
I believe that there has been a change in the hobby of collecting and trading graded cards. I do appreciate the fact that most of the people who were selling cards at RIDICULOUS valuations are now incredibly upside down on their purchases and thus forcing a transition to collecting more as a hobby for fun as opposed to trying to make a living off of scalping cards and selling them at absurd valuations. GameStop provides their customers with PSA graded cards to collect for fun and potentially use as a piece for your desk/work area and aren’t trying to appeal to those who again were flipping PSAs when they were at their absolute peak.
It’s odd we don’t get the same outrage on pricing for wax. Different LCSs selling wax at different often overinflated pricing. Online retailers. No one complains about wax gouging the same way.
I think you’re right. The market/the hobby is shifting. And hopefully it settles for the better. I like that there’s more card shows than ever before. More access to cool new things. But dealers gotta look themselves in the mirror. Too many businesses operating like pawn shops. And too many amateur dealers taking themselves too seriously.
Cost acquisition and cash profit matters.
Selling them a 30 dollar card, you're lucky to grt a 50% offer. They are making 15 bucks on it. That's not enough considering the business expenses they have. They sell one card, the pay for one hour of labor. Have to sell 30 cards a day to offset that at 30 bucka each.
If you went to a LCS with those same cards, they'll probably offer 50% too. They'll offer closer 70 to 80 percent for cards over 200 bucks.
And 70-80% is where most people would like to be. So GameStop probably not the answer if you’re trying to unload. But this is where, if GameStop is known for being the company to offer 25-50% of comps. I’m not sure this is a sustainable business model.
Was stupid to even grade the base LeBron Mosaic. Cost, more to grade than what it will ever be worth.
When you’re right you’re right. Someone really wanted that rainbow.
You have to remember that most of the modern cards 2019-2020 we see now were graded during the boom, when everyone was making huge profits just flipping 2019 modern PSA cards. Looking back, the prices were insane (yet was normal at the time, so no one thought of it as insane), and it was so easy making money. The Mosaic Lebron was $150+, the 2019 Prizm Lebron as high as $200+, even the 2019 Revolution Lebron PSA 10 was $150 etc... and those prices sustained well into 2021. I even remember 2019 Prizm Luka PSA 10 consistently going for $250-$300 on ebay for literally all of 2020- and everytime one was listed on ebay, it was snatched immediately if it was under $250. CRAZY.
In fact, there was a trend of "2nd year PSA 10s" of star players getting insane comps during the boom too So yea, most of the graded stuff we see now were graded from 2020, when it it was soooooo easy to become rich just sending EVERYTHING in to PSA. People were literally sending in lost of 100 Lebrons at a time to get graded.
@@TamTranTriZzle dude thank you for the well thought out response. You’re 100% correct. Lotta haters been commenting “why would you grade that lebron?” First off I didn’t haha.
Sounds like COVID was making people rich and crazy..boredom is a S.O.B...lol

PSA10 2019 Lebron pink camo in June sold for June 15- $20.60 USD , June 16- $20.00 June 25 19.99 USD Minus ebay fees it's about $18. Seems pretty spot on not sure where you got the $30 value ($35ish sale price)
Great research
How is it Gamestop knows to look for the little intricacies, but the collector and PSA have never mentioned these?
You know you’re right. Amazing those little authenticity checks aren’t more well known
@CoolFactorCards I think PSA has an ownership stake in gamestop now. They were going out about 2 months ago and now they are into PSA graded cards.
@@dennispond4822 hard for me to imagine why PSA would be interested in GameStop. Seems more plausible fanatics would be interested in making GameStop more of a sports card retail outlet maybe
@@CoolFactorCards PSA can start grading video games and then sell them at game stop.
@@dennispond4822 I could see that. Maybe.
So basically they only want to buy high value cards at super low prices😂
Certainly seems like their target haha
They did this with videogames, not a surprise.
You should go back and see what they priced your card for! Seems like straight up pawn shop pricing they’ll give you half, if they want it. Reminds me of when the card/comic bubble busted back in the day seems like we’re heading for another one 😮
That “junk slab era” is real
I learned at a very young age that…….”old or traditional” cards are the way to go!!! They not only hold their value, for the most part, every year they gain in value!! All of this new shit is out of control. I saw a Skenes card that sold for $80k+. That’s just dumb. I’ll stick with my MJ, Mickey Mantle, Walter Payton, Kobe, etc., and 100% hard pass on Mike Trout, Lamar Jackson, and so on. Cheers. ✌🏻✌🏻✌🏻
Agreed. 100%. Invest in the legends. Don’t forget my guy Brady though haha
VINTAGE FTW!!!
@@ObsessedCollector my man! 90s rule!
I don’t think they’ve started doing this in AZ yet, not sure though.
It’s definitely rolling out state by state and I’m not sure exactly why
Not surprised to hear them lowballing. I've heard tons of stories of them lowballing on games, and some recent stories on Pokemon slabs. Did they have prices for each slab in their system or was the employee at the Gamestop location figuring out prices themselves?
No one checking comps and quoting, simply quoting me the price based on what their computer system offers. So some sort of aggregate information that their system poles based on comps and marketability most likely. I think a lot of this has to do with marketability and liquidity of the card. They were looking at pop reports so they definitely care about not just scarcity.
@@CoolFactorCards Oh interesting, thanks for sharing!
Thanks for sharing video. Did u see any in there they were selling?
No. But I did just hear there may be a PSA partnership, and PSA just started an eBay store. Conflict of interest if you’re asking me
Tbh I would throw a card, graded a 10 by psa, away before I sell it for $1. They are tripping hard.
Just to spite them right hahaha. I’d rather give it away to the next kid you see at least right!
Should I take my dozen or so Kobe Bryant PSA 8.5 to 10 gradeds to them for offers? and do they accept Beckett graded also... (not their bccg versions)
Currently they are only making offers and buying PSA slabs.

@@CoolFactorCards they sell them on their website, in the top left corner click on "Graded Trading Cards"
@@CoolFactorCards on their website
How does that store even continue to exist?
Another really great question. The secondary video game market must be huge and I just didn’t know
They make their money through high trade volumes. That's why they buy cards at below market rate (50%-70%) and sell them at slightly below market rate (95%). They don't want to hold onto the cards because it's too risky. Instead, they focus on earning from the buying and selling process. They prioritize trade volume.
Of course, they would only offer 50%-75%. Why would they buy cards from you for 90% only for them to try to sell 95% ? that 5% probably doesnt even cover operation costs such as store rent, worker wage, etc.
Honestly try to run a similar male at shows myself. Buy at 70-80%, to sell at 90
My son took a psa 10 cole young and a psa 10 pete crow Armstrong and GameStop didn't want it
Pretty typical. I’m honestly not sure what they’re looking for
Did you also research if they had any of the cards you were trying to sell them on their website and what they were selling them for? 🤔
I still haven’t even seen where they’re selling them honestly. Heard they had some on website but haven’t looked
they wont like the older holders cuz you gotta know how tocheck slabs no matter how old
Yet they did idly
theyre not going to give you full comp prices on the cards. they have to store them and wait for a buyer. getting even 60% of comps is a GREAT value for something if you are looking to just move it and not have to worry about going to a card show or listing it online and waiting for someone to buy it 3 months from now
and getting an extra 10% as a pro member would make some of those almost 70% comps which is GREAT instant value
The prop member thing is real. Could definitely push the scales
If you could get 60% I might agree

I have a question, where are the cards going after the store buys them? And what firm of biz relationship does G.S. have with both PSA grading and/or the platform Whatnot?
@@Drew-dd5nh that’s a very good question. Something I don’t know the answer to or know if that’s even public. I do have a feeling there is a retailer behind GameStop who knows what they’re doing patterning with them to handle the inventory.

crazy to think you would even consider taking cards to gamestop knowing they offer scam prices for their games..
Really just an experiment, obviously not a smart move hsha
Yes, but if this was July 1 and your rent was due today and you were strapped for funds, you would be very happy for them having another option that would offer you cash on a Monday morning, where you could not get cash advances. That’s how the economy works
Correct. Best for someone in a pinch. Not the dollar offer of course. But if you got 50-60% on something decent, fair

Pokémon would seem more of their alley
Places to NEVER SELL ANYTHING, in order of terrible offers - Gamestop, V-Stock, pawnshops
Haha yes GameStop = glorified pawn shop
As someone who does hobby 'experiments' from time to time I love that you did this! The results are pretty much what I expected to where when they first announced they'd be doing this I figured they'd be trying to bend over people who brought in cards, which you confirmed. They are a business and like most others in the hobby, trying to to get a steal and turn around and sell it for double or triple what they paid. The funny thing about Gamestop and all these other retailers now selling cards, totally late to the game, to slow to move, the 'hobby' is on life support relative to where it was in 2020 and 2021, not a fair comparison of course but all of these places trying to get their 'piece of the pie' are a year or two to late....good stuff though as I said, I'm glad you did this video!
I appreciate your appreciation! Hope you subscribed, glad to have you with us. I’m going to agree with so much of what you said. I think the hobby is as popular as ever, but it’s changing fast. There is still money to be made and deals to find, but it’s become a hobby that requires a little smarts. Research is critical, and risk analysis. If you are buying a card, you have to pay so much attention to overhead, liquidity, risk, you are nearly never going to find a lottery ticket player or card that wins. It’s carefully leveraging popularity, hype, and liquidity. There’s also simply just so much to choose from. So many cards are produced right now, what is worth buying? For example, obsidian just came out, there’s a short printed insert in that set called volcanix. It’s spectacular, but is it a smart buy? What other inserts from other sets is it competing with? Will it stay popular, or just be another card? I generally stick to my personal philosophy, “don’t buy anything you don’t mind keeping.” That’s the safe bet.
You must remember Game Stop is a brick and mortar venue. 50% of comps is about all you can expect them to offer due to their overhead. Otherwise sell them yourself at a show, eBay or whatever. I had an LCS for over 20 years. People came in expecting me to pay comps. You go broke real quick doing that and having to pay all the overhead that goes with a store. I used to laugh at peeps complaining about eBay fees, etc. That actually is one of the cheapest ways to move invetory as opposed to a store or even card shows. Many oeople do not understand business. Brick and mortar stores can not compete on that margin and stay open. Simple economics...
Suddenly eBay doesn’t seem so bad right now
I went to a GameStop and I was curious. The 4 cards I gave them were hilariously lowballed except for one. It was a 2018 Bowman's Best Shohei Ohtani in a PSA 8. I could realistically get about $25 on eBay at best. They gave me $51 for it in store credit. I have several other Shohei rookies in better grades, so I took the money and bought a game and a blaster of Donruss basketball. Game Stop price matches and Target had a sale on the game. I pulled a base Wemby from the blaster and the game I bought was Hogwarts Legacy. I haven't had time to play it, yet. But, I've heard it's an insanely good game.
Hogwarts Legacy is a very good game. Very nice hit! Glad to hear you at least got one great offer for a card!
@@CoolFactorCards Right? I was like, $50? You sure? Then again I have a Luken Baker Golden Mirror SSP in a PSA 9 and they literally offered me 90 cents. Now, it's not the most valuable card, but still. Worth much more than 90 cents.
$50 would be a retail price for a PSA 9 of the Shohei and would expect a $50 offer for a PSA 10. I thought it was a mistake, but they have the computer telling them what to offer. The only thing I can think of is when they start selling them, they expect a Shohei rookie at PSA 8 to be high demand

You're better off selling to the repackers at the shows. Across the country the last few months, I'm sure you might have heard the repackers have been buying over 80% of comps. You're hearing stories of them bringing in duffel bags full of cash...its crazy. But it is seemingly true, Gamestop will have a little more familiarity with PSA graded Pokemon, but will aim lower in terms of comps with sports since its not their strong point just yet. Not to mention the all Gamestop employees were only recently learning how to spot fake PSA slabs.

You know game stop gravitates more towards Pokémon. lol
I’m thinking that might be the case yah
Why not sell them at the card show lol
@@j.tyler2024 at least to one of those “buying” guys right
is this a vid that really needed to be made? no hate, just honestly would never even consider it
Had to do the experiment. It was interesting. Alas, not something that’s going to impact your or my collecting or buying/selling
I think the golden rule is never sell anything to GameStop.
Not a bad rule to live by fish
My Golden rule has been never buy anything from gamestop online. The disks usually show up completely scratched up and useless
@7ItalianStallion I’ve had decent luck, I’m also not an avid gamer though
Ayyyeee that’s my hometown! I’m here big Texas 🤣🤣. Love the content man
Oh yah? Charlotte guy, you'll have to sub! love to have you brother
@@CoolFactorCards Oh yea went to Olympic for a little bit, but graduated from Vance and apparently they changed the name some years back. Can you do a video about being new to the hobby?
@@RonsoHobby I think we will soon yes. My wife Whitney who’s the real reason people follow us, she’s new and learning tons. We will soon!
@@CoolFactorCards I’ll be looking forward to seeing it
Very very Informative, Thanks for the Video
Had to go see for myself, glad you appreciate it
If you weren’t going to sell any of your cards , why didn’t you bring in cards that are actually desirable or worth something?
You took trash that nobody searches for.
Fair point. I could have taken in more big name staples.
@@CoolFactorCards I did like the video and subscribed. It sounds like they want low pop, popular psa 9s and 10s, at 65% comps max.
If you sell anything to them , it makes sense to pay the $25 pro fee to earn the extra 10% to each item.
@@dj30a9 you got it. Sounds exactly like what they’re looking for. Mostly.
The cards you took in are trash. I’m not surprised by the offers you got. I wouldn’t pay more than $10 for anything you showed. Even if you listed them on eBay for $15 I doubt they would move.
Thanks for the feedback. Happy to say All sold since then at the most recent show except the torkelson.
They just want foot traffic, not your cards
They definitely want the cards, just not sure exactly what they’re doing with them
