I just realized something: in the game intro, Mr. Dark is portrayed looking through binoculars. in the level select, everything is viewed through what seems to be a pair of binoculars... Dark has been watching you the whole time.

this is easily one of my most favourite videos in YT, and i never played rayman or am all too interested in platformers thanks for your humourus style of video making I rewatch it so often and want to share this masterpiece with everyone I know
This game simultaneously colored and ruined my childhood. Like you, Moskito ruined everything. Until I became older, beat that guy, and was able to advance all the way to the apparent end. Also because there's a code to give you 10 continues that you could use every time you're at the continue screen. And I got there *so many times*. It was only then that I realized you need EVERY SINGLE CAGE. No continues in the world could help me with that, as some of them are literally impossible to get without exploits, cause there are some problems in the PS1 version. I have not yet beat this game legit to this day. Got a level code for the final stage, and it's freaking sweet. Such a shame that it's blocked off by such a cheap game design decision.
Getting all the cages is quite the challenge, I agree, but I have played this game on the PS1 and, as far as I'm aware, it's totally possible to legitimately beat it without resorting to any kind of exploits. Unless there are differences between copies for the same platform... But the one I had was just fine. Yes, getting to know that I needed to break all the cages was quite disappointing at first to me too. But looking back at the overall experience that I had with this game, it was a good exercise in perseverance. Also, personally, I think that freeing all the Electoons gives an unusually heroic touch to this game, and the final encounter with Mr. Dark became way more epic after struggling with the rest of the stages for about 3 years.
It's totally possible to be able to collect all the cages in the game on the PS1 version without any exploits, I've done it myself. Sorry but it just mean that you're not good enough.
I completed the PS1 game without cheats. I don't know how but I managed to find all cages, you just have to search everywhere and listen out for that little jingle that plays when you go to a specific location that makes something appear (a bad guy, a cage or a platform that will take you to a cage).
The GBA version for what i know is actually the most fair alongside the DS port without counting Redemption. Rayman is more resistant, level design was slighty altered and there is zero knockback.
I got to the paint world and could never get past the RIDICULOUS bits where you have to get over the ink, then hop on a tiny eraser precisely and spin jump all the way but not too high so you hit the ceiling and then avoid the pencil to fall gently onto another tiny eraser
I also had problems with that part until I realised that literally all you had to do was just keep walking normally (but not run) over the ink and it goes through the obstacles perfectly.
Nice video, Rayman 1 doesn't get as much attention as it deserves. I remember always having trouble with this game as a little kid, especially in Band Land and Picture City, though once you get used to the game the play starts feeling really good. The gorgeous music and wonderful music really add to the game as well as pointed out in the video.
Quality video. I'm a big fan of Rayman 2 but could never really get into Rayman 1, even though I love 2D platformers... Also great pannen reference during a highly appropriate moment when explaining the jump mechanics was necessary anyways... Well done.
I realized as a kid that I needed to get the cages. Never realized that a specific sound gave you hints to where they might be. This is a hard game to beat.
I spent a large chunk of my childhood playing this game, but never beat it because I couldn't find all of the electoons. I came back to it some 15 years later and finally beat it. It was probably the most satisfying gaming moment of my life (despite the anti-climactic final boss).
I love this review, I'm currently in the middle of a nostalgia trip for the PS1, I got croc 1, the mummy, crash bandicoot 1-3 and of course Rayman ready to play, I watched this review series 3 times the last two weeks, I just think it's that great, once before I started playing, once in the middle of my play through and now again after I have just beaten the game for the first time because I couldn't as a kid, it was worth the painfully hard difficulty just to remember and and have fun and play it differently to how I played it 22 years ago, thanks hippo for the laughs and for reminding me that it's a hard game when I was stuck and giving me clarity as to why I couldn't win and complete Rayman as a child.
