10PM Gmt, that is. twitch.tv/gibbontake
please do review the rest of the games cuz this was great
Keep up the good work dude.
Oh and if I may go so far as to recommend a game or two, the Megaman Legends (1 and 2) games for PS1 are excellent and I think, right up your street.
They're not atall like anyother megaman games I'll warn you.
It's worth playing them on an emulator though as they're quite rare and expensive.
Much love.
It was fun to listen a first-play review in 2018 of a game that I've played since like year 2000, it's a really interesting point of view.
Heroes III is the best :D it was my favorite game in my childhood
We all hippofail sometimes, don't worry about it. Great video.
I really cant believe anybody would discover HoMM in 2018, but im really happy to see it happen
Found a RUclips video by recommendation and watched a bit. Honestly I loved the castle theme so much, that I kept watching (which was a full campaign playthrough of around 8h or so. lol, whoops)
It's 2020 and I just came across this game on gog. I thought I'd look into it. :)
I literally just discovered these 3 days ago 😀
@@simgarfu Weird that someone wouldnt have played the game but then again i was playing this stuff back in the 90's Alltho every other heroes game is hot garbage compared to homm 3 and I still love to play the other ones too. Its just homm3 is on another level.
Jebu911 at the time I was only playing console releases, so I missed out on so much. Thankfully w/ GOG I’m catching up lol
I would LOVE to see someone who didn't grow up with Heroes talk about the progression from game to game.
So yea a review of each game before you play the next would be amazing :)
My god, HoMM 3 is such an integral part of my life, the hours I put into that game without even knowing how to actually play it. Such a great game, I hope you do on that one as well.
in case you dont know, there are very good mods made for heroes 3. like wake of the gods.
Same. I think the funniest thing about looking back at the games I have played when I was young is that how often I was so painfully bad at them without even realizing.
@@N4chtigall Nevermind bad, I didn't even know english too well back then. It's not my first language you see.
i'm still playing till this date, including my 15 year old cousin
More might and magic pls
He Might.
HUEHUEHUEHUEEHHH
"technical limitations were the best thing ever invented, i miss them so much"
best line in the whole video
every Slav in age 35-15, especially Poles, love Heroes 3, it's the best one, it's like "meet with your friends and play together" kind of game, it's like... part of culture, small, not important, but it is here, it's great game, i have played all heroes, i love this old school aesthetics of first 3 games :3
Tomek Inn T_T
35-15?
Tomek Inn you won't find a Russian in the net who didn't at least heard of HOMM3 if they are 18+ years old that is.
I don't know anybody (and I know Poles exclusively) who didn't at least hear of HoMM3, I remember playing it being like 9 and not really understanding anything, but having fun with my older cousins nonetheless.
haha very true
3 is my favorite
It speak volume about my age, where at 30, all of my generation was rised on Heroes, it is unheard of anyone, basically anyone who played games to not only know it, but most likely clocked hundreds of hours into it. But now a new generation of players have matured, and they discover those titles for the first time. Makes me feel old dude : P but also happy that younger people also aprecieate them.
I think Heroes 3 has still aged well, although I can see the holes in its design. Dunno about 5, played it for a weekend and wasn't inspired, it felt easier than all others and I hated the way they changed combat, but maybe that was a hasty first impression.
I thought he was joking and acted like he hadn't heard of the Heroes series.
Well I remember a conversation with my flatmate who is 19yo today, he claimed to be an avid gamer who played everything, yet he never even heard about 90% games that I asked him about, titles that are so obvious and given to me that it literally blew my mind how he could have never even heard of those. I believe gamers that are now 40-45+ had the same shock with my generation. The oldest games I played were from the 80s.
Yes, yes, yes! More of this please. I played a ton of heroes III back when I didn't understand English at all. So I usually lost but I still had fun for some reason.
Please review the rest! I've been waiting for years to see proper YT videos on these great games. I grew up with Heroes II, since it was my dad's favorite. In fact, it might be the first game I ever played. It was funny to see you describe the gameplay when it's something so ingrained inside me. Can't wait for Heroes III. That's my favorite one.
You have no idea how happy and surprised I am to see this game reviewed here, and you did the game justice for those just discovering it. I'd be very happy to see more reviews of this series, and I'd be very surprised if you didn't enjoy at least the next 2 sequels as well. Heroes 2 aesthetics are wonderful even now in that old 90s way, with an enjoyable campy campaign (especially the evil side, enjoy those cutscenes!), and a wonderful community where some of the best fan maps live on in the single player itself.
These games were amazing to me as a child. The colorful pixel graphics looked amazing for its time. They were warm, vibrant and inviting. The world seemed large and complex for me as a child. With many game options. So many types of units! And all so beautifully detailed. Looking at the screen with all of your heroes and such was like a wheres waldo painting. And the series definitely does get better as you go. Frankly I don't understand why anyone would play the first except for it's nostalgia value. It was a product of it's times. And I think that's it's charm. If they tried to pull this off now I think it would turn out more like the Total War series and I'm already over that concept. This game was popular around the same time as Masters of Orion 2 and Age Of Empires 2. Rollercoaster Tycoon. Those kinds of games. If you picture this game in the middle of that era, you can see how much charm and gameplay it packed. I loved it. Glad to see you do too.
definetly one of my favourite frachises and homm 2 and 3 are still one of my fav games of all time
HoMM 1 was one of my fav games of all time haha
It's super exciting to see you doing a realtime and 2018 review of such a classic game that we all love!
What a WONDERFULL review! PLEASE REVIEW THE REST OF THEM ALL!
"Technical limitations are probably my favorite thing ever invented" Well said! I agree
Certainly something that made the games of the 90 so awesome! They do involve a lot of imagination still.
I hope you look at HoMM3 too, at least, cuz that’s gooood
Goooooood like really good
MOAR! I'm legit just about to load this up for a nostalgia trip.
Of course we want to see you review the other ones! Great video!
I would love it if you review the other ones! It's interesting to hear someone previously unfamiliar with the series talk about it
This game exists as a boardgame or atleast "Heroes of might and magic , the board game" is a thing
I would love to see more HoMM videos in the future, hell I wouldn't mind seeing videos about the Might & Magic games, since HoMM is a spinoff of those and there are several connections between the two franchises.
Awesome video and I would LOVE for you to do the Might and Magic games up untill the 5th one (especially the 3rd and the 5th), the rest I don't think you should bother. You're the best.
It's a very lovely game to relax with. No time pressure. Atmospheric and imagitive music. Unique enchanting graphical style.
Even after 20 years, my sister and I still occasionaly play this together (hotseat multiplayer taking turns against ai). It's that perfect rainy sunday game to play with someone you love. Huddle up together at the pc with a warm cup of tea and some cookies. Like the dude said...it's like a boardgame. An awesome one at that!
Play HoMM 3 (+expansions) !!! They pretty much evolved this game to perfection at that point.
Finally someone mention the enchanting graphical style, and also music too, these are never seen again after the first title.
+nomooon
I would say the second one is even better in this matters but anyway yeah, the later games defently missed something. It's espessially sad when talking about the Vth, which I would call the best in series but it's clumsy art style is just... meh.
Vipera Aquilus was it v with the spinning town view, that was the biggest plus for me, made towns look majestic. I checked out the graphic for six and seven they seem to be closer to wow and Asian orpg than the original heroes feel.
Yes, towns in HeroesV indeed look great but everything else... I dunno, mayb it's jut not my thing. Same with the later games, not even interested to try them. It still fine though, we have four great games in the series and one arguebly good anyway :D
@@nomooon I never liked the look of those WoW elves in HoMM 5 (or anywhere else, those extraordinarity long ears sticking out to the side, I can't stand them)... and that faction has always been my favourite.
The music has always been a vital part of the series for me as well. I mean, it's so good there's an entire orchestra replaying it regularly even with the composer, Paul Anthony Romero and various community musicians who have covered those tracks. It's just a blast to listen to. Look for "Heroes Orchestra", turn up the volume and dream away.
Great to see someone start with the original! If you felt this positively about the first one, I'd love to see your feelings going forward. Heroes II review, please!
YES!!!! But of course not streaming by the time the video was uploaded :(
You are the beginning of a great journey, my friend.
We definitely need to see some more of this
This was interesting. I'd like to see more.
3 is the Best
3, 4 and 6 are my favorites (in order)
"And thank god for that" cracked me. That was the best laugh I've had in a month
Absolutely would love a review of the entire series, the first one still somewhat holds up visually, but gameplay wise the third and fifth game really nail it.
Also if you aren't scared off by old graphics I could recommend checking out Masters of Magic and Masters of Orion 2, the former is kind of a similar game but allows for some crazy stuff and the latter is really great too, but not a fantasy game.
Yes! YES! We DEFINITELY will like you to reveiw the rest of the series!
3:23 this pretty much sums up my opinion on everything ever
the cool hippboy back for more and on my birthday no less, what a sight, what a thing to've 'appened!
You know, I LOVE 90s PC game reviews!
So please, make more.
Yeeeeessss more please
As a huge fan of the HOMM series, I can assure that you will love the rest of the series. I have been playing it since HOMM 2 came out, and have been loving each instance since.
Happy adventuring an I hope you will reveiw the other HOMM games as you try them...
Ya forgot to mention that each hero type has it's own unique skill and their stat specialty:
Barbarians have no penalty on moving around the rough terrains (Concentrates on Attack mostly)
Warlocks can see further (Concentrates on Spell Power mostly)
Knights have a higher morale (Concentrates on Defense mostly)
Sorceress' can travel further on sea (Concentrates on Knowledge mostly)
Awesome that you discovered the HOMM series! The third one is known as the best one , with a small community still playing after all these years.
I never played this series yet I have heard of it. And yes! Do more of these games, please Louie. :D
Also, You got to do " *Mario vs. Donkey Kong* " like you said in your LBP levels!
The HoMM strategy series is based on the Might and Magic RPG series which may also interest you. III is the first one with overhead mapping.
"Technical limitations are my favorite thing invented. I'm so sad they're gone."
Deep!
More please! Please review 2 and 3 as well. :D
The way you talk about Heroes series like something new to the audience is just hilarious i like it.
This popped up in my feed, its always a pleasure to see. I remember getting it as part of a different Interplay compilation set in the early 2000s and absolutely loving it and its sequels. The art style is very charming and the music is great. And as of right fuggin now, it IS a board game!
How do you get the Arabian units?
thats my kinda game yeeeeeeeeeeeee
please cover more of this franchise :)
Can anyone figure out a way to play the original HOMM with multiplayer?
Heroes 3 best heroes.
Jimmy Johnson The biggest for sure.
Heroes 1 is the only one where you can finish a game with your friends in one night. Big plus
I found this video while browsing the good old music of the series after the Heroes Orchestra gave another two live concerts last weekend (you should absolutely listen to it!) and since there's so little footage on HoMM 1, I kinda had to watch it. So awesome you found this series of gems so late and got hooked!
My first contact was finding the demo of HoMM 2 on a random game magazine CD back in the 90s after having binged Might and Magic 3, 4 and 5 (the latter combined to World of Xeen, but initially I had 5 only which basically was hard mode making Dark Souls look like kindergarten) up and down. And I got sucked in, starting with the Knights on the Broken Alliance map (one of just 3 available in the demo) which IMHO still is one of the best and most balanced maps ever made in the whole series, listening to that utterly great soundtrack that plays when you're in the grasslands... I kinda wanted to get the full version, but didn't have the cash. Never really told my parents though that I wanted to have it and I got it for Hearth's Warming Eve in 1996, totally unexpected. I ended up binging the game from like that evening on until school started again two weeks later. When Heroes 3 was released, I went to the stores even two days earlier just to see if I could get it ahead of launch and was successful. That was my first day one buy ever, well actually day one -2 :D
9:26 HoMM 2 (which you already reviewed I reckon) basically is HoMM 1 in good with a lot of improvements. HoMM 3 did the same and made it all better and it got a ton of expansions and extra campaigns... HoMM 4 then was the one off with a totally changed combat system featuring the heroes actually participating, but also a rather hard to plan on combat grid and HoMM 5 tried to bring the HoMM 3 success back with some new features like having to choose one of 2 branches when upgrading troops and everything in 3D (which makes it harder to pinpoint how far enemy heroes could possibly go per round which was much easier on the grids of the older games). Never touched the later ones (6 removed all the secondary resources...).
I fucking love that people are still discovering these games and enjoying them.
Please keep making these reviews, your channel is very amusing, it'll grow quickly don't worry, finish the HOMM series, that way HOMM lovers will associate the game with your channel, it's an easy way to grab a small audience by the balls.
I remember playing this when I was a kid, this gem got me into turn-based strategy games.
My first Heroes game was 5 but I didn't really play it much. My PC at that time was very potato. A decade later, I got Heroes 3 and while I didn't grow up with it, it impressed me. It's a really unique game.
Heroes 5 wasn't performing well to be fair. I didn't have a potato when it was released (in fact I was in beta, but I basically didn't participate because of the suboptimal performance it had - which I hoped would improve, but never did) and when I got a new rig in 2006 with dual GPUs, it wouldn't be much better and I gave it a final try in 2009 with another new rig and it still was a stutterfest when I dared to tilt the cam up just slightly...
Yesssss make more
HoMM1 and HoMM2 are only 1 year away, but there's a world between them. You really start enjoying it at the second one.
Now Like you said brilliantly, technical limitation is the best thing ever invented, and once they overcomed it, HoMM lost something irreplaceable, its simplicity and its beauty.
I still playing this! Nice share
6:15 - Funny that a board game of Heroes 3 is coming out.
Fun games, glad you found a whole set. I highly recommend # 3(as will everyone most likely). The rest are very good, the 4th is very different feels like it could be a distant contusion to the rest of the series. Enjoy them!
Can I watch your stream somewhere? Can't find it on your twitch, isn't it there?
they get archived on Gibbongaming ruclips.net/video/n6uEGwNp6cc/видео.html
HippoCrit Thank you! I know what I'm watching at work today! :)
Moar plez, my nigga. More Hippo equals more utter joy in my life.
I used to play the 3rd one as a kid and I loved it. I would love to see you talk more about this series. 4 and 5 are really a step down and 6 was a mess. But I was happy to see this game talked about.
When I was a child I watched my parents play this game and I would eventually play against my parents in Heroes II.
I did not quite understand the idea of building troops. All I would do was to recruit heroes and walk around when it was my turn, I went to the sphinx (in Heroes 2) to solve the riddle given by the sphinx. Since my English was rather poor at the time I could not understand the question and I would just smash the buttons on the keyboard, in hope of getting it right. I didn't get the correct answer.
When it finally was the endgame either of my parents could easily win against me, since all I had was level 1 heroes with the standard troops that accompanied the heroes, whereas they could have black dragons and/or titans.
I was essentially very much like an easy A.I of today's games, with the exception that the A.I does not throw a tantrum at you after suffering a stuning defeat.
Awesome review!
Imo, homm series is one of the best video game series ever, from any platform. I recommend you to pay attention on homm3 music when you will review it, trully a masterpiece!
That collection is super rad considering how much it costs to get each of those games individually nowadays. It's not a whole lot, but it can start to add up when you have 5 games and the 2 expacs for 5 that you still need to buy individually.
Totally forgot there also was a small version of it. Got the same collection in a big box with artwork books and other goodies :)
Man... It's been so long that I've played this game... It was a good setup for the series.
Seeing new generation of players pick up games I played when I was a kid is a very warm feeling :).
Yeah, I'd definitely love to see vids on the sequels, I'm invested in this franchise now.
Review the rest mate. One of my all time favorite series. I've wasted countless hours playing HoMM3 and 4 and have their soundtracks throatily cemented in my mind.
If you haven't already, check out "Heroes Orchestra" on RUclips... :)
Armageddon in a nutshell: I have one dragon and 15 spell power. I win.
the third heroes was one of the games on my first pc
it was marvelous
and now, 15 yrs later i still find it very satisfying
yes , more pls dady
These games are my childhood. I never stopped playing them when I was a kid. Now I must buy that collection set... You know... For nostalgia reasons.
Now this, this is a perfect review for a perfect game. 10/10
Heroes 1, 2, and 3 are my favorite turn based strategy game, right up with the recent Fire Emblems.
I think there is mobility bar, the yellow one next to character on your right side of screen
Oh damn, if you make the reviews of Heroes 2 and Heroes 3, that would be awesome.
Heroes of Might and Magic 5 is bae. Even more so with the Tribes of the East expansion.
You should review all the other sequels, they are great. And so is your video
There's a fan patch/expansion thing for IV that is necessary for balance called equillibris, if you get that far. There are also similar things for the other games, but none of the rest are necessarily improvements, just interesting.
Good video mate.
Damn, that was a game of my childhood! ^^
I liked this review and would watch more from this franchise
"If you start on the wrong foot, you're fucked"
Truer words about the game I've never heard
Those words: Basically Monopoly in a nutshell. Or Catan. Many popular board games actually... :D
Hope you do try the others. Heroes 2 adds the Wizard and Necromancer castles as well as your first taste of artifact combining. Heroes 3 is typically regarded as the fan-favorite of the series and adds a ton of combo artifacts(cloak of the undead king in the hands of a necromancer being a death sentence for enemies usually). Heroes 4 is interesting because you actually have your hero on the battlefield and it gets to actively engage in combat, eventually with your hero become strong enough to single-handedly slay mighty foes like black dragons. Heroes 5 goes back to your hero being on the sidelines, but the skill gaining system is fantastic, with your hero having the ability to potentially learn the Ultimate ability related to their faction if you learned all pre-requisite skills to unlock it. Heroes 5 also takes the game into 3d, including combat(though your first taste of this could be Heroes of Might and Magic Quest for the Dragonbone staff on ps2).
Review more of these please! You might also be interested in the game Majesty.
3:23 Best line ever... I completely agree!
Yes, review more of this
2 is a VAST improvement over 1 and 3 is a lot like 2, but even better (most people think 3 is the best). 4 is a little odd as they took it in a slightly different approach before the studio went bust, most people don't like it. 5 is a huge improvement, arguably the second best after 3 (and it's in 3D)
I'd definitely recommend playing through them all.
a concise assessment!
I'm one of the few who thinks 4 is the best, though I might have been predisposed to like it by the manual. The devs said they felt it was the game they'd been subconsciously trying to make ever since they made 1's spiritual predecessor, _King's Bounty_ -- which was considered state-of-the-art for having 16-color graphics and taking up both sides of a floppy disk!
Also, there actually was a Heroes 4 tabletop game: boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/17869/heroes-might-magic-iv-collectible-card-tile-game
Parents randomly got me this when it was origionally released. Best decision of their life!
On a side note we actually made a board game version for an art project :D
Yes Hippo please review the other games as well. Especially the 3rd which is pretty much the agreed upon being the best one
oh cool now i get to know how the other games were and man they were awsome
5:14 unless you're parading around the world with a couple dragons... :D
i would love to see your review of heroes 2/3/4/5
New favorite RPG stat: "Potential Attackery".
Magic II is really good since it improves so much of Magic I, everyone usually enjoys talking about Magic III so a follow up review would be good :)
This is actually one of the first games I ever played. I was 6-7 years old (had to do the math just now).
MMO's were always my favorite, but outside of those, I remember 3 games that my mom had that I could play:
Diablo- I attempted to play this game once, but it was too scary for me. I never knew this was Diablo til probably 10 years later when I recognized the box art.
Warcraft- I liked this game, I was very bad at it though. Still the only WC I've ever played.
Heroes of Might and Magic- This was by far my favorite of the 3. I could not figure out how to play the campaign. However there was a quick play mode that I could play just fine, and I absolutely loved the graphics and theme.
I could never remember the name of this game, and have always wondered what it was. I was reading a review for Heroes of Might and Magic V in Game Informer and the name sounded familiar and I thought, "could it be from the same series from that game I played when I was a kid?", then forgot about it.. Until I just stumbled upon the thumbnail to this video, and saw something I haven't seen in 22 years giving me one of the biggest blasts of nostalgia I've ever experienced.
I have a terrible memory, so remembering all of this is very awesome for me, thanks.
You do good videos.
