This game deserves a remake. Hell, this entire series deserves it.
Damn straight!
My excitement gets "ignited" at very thought of it.
I agree!!
Nah not a remake. Rayman 3 is fine as it is. Just more crazy levels and a new story as "Rayman 4". Unfortunately, Rayman Raving Rabids was just a cashgrab ugghh.
Or maybe a remake in the form of VR!!! 😱
Rayman seriously needs another 3D platformer. I loved those.
I pray to the Ubisoft Gods for a Rayman 4 ever so often... but my prayers are never answered.
HoodoHoodlumsRevenge Rayman 4 turned into the shitfest that is Rayman Raving Rabbids
@@snappy1622 and even Raving Rabbids could've been something much better too. Remember the trailer where Rayman is beating the snot out of the Rabbids, flying around on an eagle and all that? There was even a 3rd party studio working on a separate Rayman 3D platformer too, inspired by the first game, but it got shut down too.
@@HoodoHoodlumsRevenge If I'm not mistaken, Michel Ansel has said that when he was done with Beyond Good and Evil 2, he wanted to make a proper Rayman 4.
Rayman just needs to be in Smash
bruh this shit was scary when I was young
what scare me of this level is the dam tinz thath appear random if knaren hit you
That moment in the grand foyer with the Leptys statue where you figure you're safe on the ramp because they get stuck on the wall....only for one to no clip his way through and resume the chase, it formed the foundation of absolute terror in my 8 year old mind and became a focal point of my nightmares for YEARS
"THEY'RE BECOMING SENTIENT! NOT EVEN THE DEVELOPERS CAN STOP THEM!"
11:00 After replaying the game a few years ago I finally realized why you can beat Reflux but not the other Knaarens. Reflux is the strongest warrior because of the magical staff. That staff makes him more powerful than anyone else but gives him a unique weakness. The jewel is linked to his body and probably serves as a way to enable or focus his magical abilities.
If you pay close attention he's immune to attacks to his body. You need to actually hit the jewel on the staff to damage him both in this fight and in the last one where he's embedded it into his body. The devs really put care into details like this.
Holy crap I NEVER though of it like that. I memed about this since my childhood, and you just solved it !!! Mind blown !
true u gut me too bro. damn u just destroyed my meme hahahah
Anyone else remember when Ubisoft had genuine creativity and passion? Those were the days, man.

Oh God I hated this level, the only thing that kept me going was having the mighty excalibur known as the remote and muted the TV, because the thing that scared me the most was their gruesome Screams and dialogue, *"Put bamboo under his nails..."* *"Spit in his eyes..."* I remember having to go to my mother just to calm myself while not freaking out my mother or having her notice. Man I was kinda a wuss
I remember when my dad and I were playing this level, I was really scared
"Spit in his eyes"? Wow that's nothing, the italian version instead says "Suck his eyes"
😂😂😂 damn
Can relate, I was 8 years old playing this. Was not at all prepared. Honestly feel like this game was training for horror games future me would play.
In the german version the say "Spit in his face" and "let him run, flesh with salt is better"
number 15: the scrariest level on rayman 3
Read that in Chills' voice lol
as it turns out

Funnily enough in the German version they did not translate „let him write bad checks“. Instead they changed it to „let him sweat blood“. Even more terrifying!
Remember how they also said something along the lines of "put toothpicks under his nails"? Truly an experience
Let him sweat, meat woth salt is better!
@@ThePastaBolognese
"Let him run around, meat will crumble"
"First, we will shove the splinters under his nails"
"We will force him to make the check "in blanco""
Those are some of polish translated stuff that Knaaren say
The desert of the knaaren.....one of the OG scary games from kid games. I remember going into the level, thinking "oh cool." But when the teensies warn you of the Knaaren, i thought, "oh okay." Every time a Knaaren caught me, I think "oh God why?" This level, and the beast makers location from spyro 1 (because that was the original "why is this in a kids game" moment for me) gave me nightmare vibes in a kids game.
For me, what made this location scary is because the knaaren where the enemies Rayman COULDN'T beat, just run away from. This level was my favorite horror level in a kids game specifically because the knaaren had so much charm to them.
I remember that one time when I thought you can fight back, imagine my suprised face when I remembered that teensies mentioned they were invincible. I was never stressed with an video game until that time.
I always wondered how many pirates it would've taken Razorbeard to conquer those tunnels.
Rayman 3 is my childhood, that level truly made it hard for me to finish it due to the kanaarens Its technically one of my childhood trauma's glad you talked about it :)
11:40 Actually, I CAN tell you, who's making those sounds! It's Reflux himself groaning and moaning out of anger at his defeat! A later cutscene reveals that!
Wait, really??
Man, what??
Yeah! The cutscene, where Andre goes to persuade Reflux to steal the Scepter of Leptys! Reflux is still moaning in defeat!
Possible but the voices isn't similar imo
@@schneidermathafack2242 there is a possibility the actor changed his tone, or that his voice was edited in some way! Idk man, I always thought it made sense with the aforementioned cutscene!
love that rayman 3 is still talked about in 2019, hope they will release a 3rd person rayman game again
I..... hope a new 2d platformer.....
FIGHT ME!
Fellow Swede here!
Playing this before learning English made the experience even more terrifying. You KNOW those Knaaren are talking about you, but you have no idea what their saying. That damn level mentally prepared me for "Amnesia the dark descent" later in life.
Loving the contrast of going from an absolutely wondrous heavenly place straight into hell itself.
I find Amnesia way less frightening due to the fact it is expectedto be scary and you don't spend the rest of the game being a powerhouse and suddenly gind yourself helpless
Amnesia was a cakewalk after getting halfway through Thief 3, a fun stealing game, and it suddenly dropping the shalebridge cradle on me
If something can be scarier, it would be called:
"The desert of the Karens".

Good one 😂
what scare me of this level is the dam Teensies thath appear random if knaren hit you
For some reason when I was a kid, I didn't find the Desert of Knaaren as scary as it may have been perceived. I did find it very hard, however.
On the other hand, I considered the Longest Shortcut to be rather unnerving (not kidding). Sure, it's got cheery music and gimmicky puzzles, but there was something about it that got me. What if I never found the way out? It'd be like being eternally stuck in a prison, all alone with happy music playing in the background while you're slowly going insane. I know how ridiculous this sounds, but hey, those puzzles were not easy yo.
Damn, that’s a really interesting interpretation of that level! I never personally saw it that way, but I see what you mean! It’s crazy how differently people can react to things!
Same thoughts man
Literally me, holt sh*t, everything you said about the kanaren + instead of making me feel terror, it made me feel adrenaline and survival inscticts, i was really focus in just surviving, and ngl it feelt so cool.
And 100% same with the Longest shortcut, + it had something innervingg about it and made me overwhelmed.
5:20 I remember just sitting in that cave starring at the Knaaren for 5 minutees until I had the courage to walk out of there.
Holt shit yea I did the same! Just studying it while it screamed at me
Holy shit same and then I walked forward, it moved, and then I zipped back in my lil corner hoping it wouldnt just waltz in and kill me.
The same but i camped at the spot of 5:25 trying to hit them with the rocket just for their reactions lol
That part was so cruel and clever, making us face the horror we just discovered
the level was pure genius. how the teenies warn you of them and how the knaaren are actually a big treat but you never really interact with them. you never get to fight them or even think about fighting them. the point is to avoid them which really is what makes them so scary. you want to get away from them, because thats the goal of the level. also the ghosts. they only spawn when you are at your most vulnerable carrying the fruit, slow and unable to attack. also i think the boss beeing easy was also a good decision. after all the effort you get to overcome them, even though it was just because of the mercy of the king. beating the strongest one and getting a actual reward felt so nice and is one of the reasons why i think of this game back positively.
scariest level in rayman was the tower anyways. that goddamn easter egg. that hellish gate opening and you walk in wondering, not finding anything until you climb up and find those 3 creatures speeding in their prison cells locked away. imo the creepiest easter egg.
When i was little i refused to sleep after playing this 😔😔
I stopped playing for 1 years until I forgot why when I reached this level, stopped when I was 8 and restarted at 9

After all these years I realised that Rayman 3 was my first experience with survival horror genre
Is it just me or Globox being as silly and clumsy as he is, actually made the game fun to play and got me through a lot of scary and intimidating levels
My friend and I were shaking while playing this level first time as kids, whenever we escaped a section we would take a deep breath and a few minutes just to release tension and prepare for what was coming next. Brings back good memories.
Yes, I’ve always loved the Rayman games and this part used to scare the shit outta me as a child!
Personally I think what made it scary was how honest the warning the teensies gave us and how the game delivered just how strong they were compared to Rayman. Then they really sold it with the eerie music and basically making that level a scary platformer with a really memorable boss fight and the end. That alone made it the one of scariest and the most fun 3d platformer levels to play as a child.
I got this game on my PS2 when i was 5. As a 5 year old Dutch boy i was absolutely terrified.. man that music still gives me chills! I also thought the boss battle with the witch was really creepy aswell, as you're completely alonr with that thing in this giant mansion, the music was great though!
Gosh this game is so underrated...
Oh my god i am Dutch as well
Not understanding the English "jokes" the Knaaren's made made it like 5 times more terrifying right?
@@Sylvysprit 100% , We did not understand the warnings of the teensies nor the jokes. They were simply gruesome monsters. Best game out there though, and on my second playthrough 10 years later I found all the green gems which I did not know existed because I would just bolt through these tunnels.
Eindelijk een Nederlander met goede smaak. Dit is echt t beste 3-d platformer spel ooit voor mij geweest en ik was zo bang met die Knaaren vroeger 😂😂
Bro for real
The beginning when you said “video game shaped present” made me remember to research a specific gift my mom wants for Christmas
Thank you for this
I’m pretty sure I made my Dad complete the level for me when I first played it. Spooky stuff for a 7 year old!
That and most of the final battle...
Both me and my older bro were scared so we made our mom complete it :')
@@asiabandurska3401 I got my bro to complete it
This deserves more views I honestly love this game it’s literally my childhood
I used to be scared too when I was little, I remember that one day in which I've finally found the guts to complete the level
Finally completing this level as a kid was god-like. Made you feel like a real hero!
Rayman 2 and 3 are my favorite games of all time. And this level scared the living shit out of me as a kid.
Oh. Memories. I was a Dutch kid who couldn't even understand English yet. These guys were so scary. Even now. I had a friend's big brother who I'm sure hated me beat the Desert for me so I could get onto the lovely Longest Shortcut.
Besides the fact that the desert and Knaareens are absolutely terrifying and always scared me as a kid (and still scares me tbh), the devs didn't stop there and decided that Lavomatrixes is something that they want to show me
i remember having nightmares of this level! the teen that popped out when you get hit the first times to remind you not to get close to the knaarens was stuck in my head for a few days, and i never wanted to replay this part
...funny how now its my favorite level in the game :'3
That part freaked me out the most, honestly. The way the game paused and had him pop up on the middle of the screen made me feel like I had done something really wrong...
Reading all these comments I'm just shocked how Rayman 3 influenced so many people just like me. I had many memories of my childhood days with this game, and yes this one level was one of the most terrifying I could have experienced along with that other sniper-like boss who lurked you inside that Alice in Wonderland-like mansion. Rayman 3 was more than a game for me. I particulary remember one nightmare I had about this level. It was me lost inside there and I was just wandering around in an infinite loop and of course I felt those enemies attack like real with pain and grief. My bet is that it was because I couldn't ever resolve the puzzles of that level alone, I sure spend days and days trying to unsuccesfully get out of there. I waked up crying I'm not exaggerating I used to be some sensible kid fearing of everything, but perhaps it was since I played Rayman that I started to somewhat grow up in the sense of not fearing things around and also I'm nowadays a horror genre fan, loving every single horro game out there. Maybe it was thanks to that Rayman 3 level. This game will always be my favorite♥️
I was terrified of the farm level in "Spyro: release the dragonfly" as a kid. it was the one where alien enemies invaded these guys' farm and it was always night time and the enemies would spawn in only when you got close enough which scared me out of beating the game for a good couple years, oops.
Crow Momma Aww my goodness I know exactly what you mean, Crop Circle Country from Spyro 4, even the music was so spooky!
“It’s the cheese.”
Jano in Rayman 2 was fucking scary though. The entire Rayman 2 was dark in general, while the Knaaren were just one smart part of Rayman 3 - which makes it so unexpected that they're comming so out of nowhere as you just mentioned, since they were just terrifying. Rayman 3 really had a great mix of a bizarre, magical and dark world. Cool analysis 😎👍🏻 Good job. I enjoyed it!
I'm glad I'm not the only who found this level terrifying as a kid, when I got to the ghosts and the music kicked in I turned off the game and didn't play it for days
The Knaaren chase music was enough for nine year old me to just stop playing for a while
i loved this video it was very nostalgic as rayman 3 was one of the first games I played as a kid, I love the fact that you took a break is great your voice befour you took a break was tired and kind of bland tho it may seem like a mised opportunity taking a break is some thing natural and human like even your favourite habit can become overwhelmin and refreshing you pasion is olways the best choise. just know that there are people who watch and enjoy your content and that isnt something I usually say. keep it up and be pure
This and the cave of bad dreams were why I was never able to finish rayman 2 and 3. I was never able to finish rayman 1 because of its difficulty, lol
I love Rayman 1, but I hate how they make you find EVERY cage in order to complete it.
I watched this video out of curiosity and wasn't expecting to see a mention, ehe. Good video and research, though! I believe everyone had a moment of suspense the first time they experienced this level. I remember having some jump scares in front on my computer back at my 11 years old, but managing to pass the level through. Despite of its scariness it is one of the most fun levels of the game, in my opinion!
Hey, thanks for checking out my video! :D
I very much agree; it's one of the best levels in the game for what it does differently and it seems to have left a big impact on the majority of people who played it when they were younger. It's great stuff, all around!
For a moment, I was thinking that it was a bit silly to get scared by such cartoonish game, but then I remembered that when I was that age, I was terrified of the Mrz. Ruby levels in Sly Cooper 1, and I still dislike them to this day.
God, that giant snake was horrifying
Does anyone remember when the teensies literally stop the game and berate you for running into the Knaaren?
I do!
Jokes on you, I was already traumatized by Silent Hill 4 before playing Rayman 3!
That room with the giant Eileen head... WHAT THE HELL DOES IT MEAN?!
@@HoodoHoodlumsRevenge It means I want to go cry in the corner.
The Aussie Nerd Saaaame...
I had that same sort of experience with Wind Waker. Like the second level with the Bokoblins? The stealth was terrifying, having no way to defend myself. Had to take a break for about a week it scared me so bad
When I played this game as a kid when the Knaaren said "Make him write bad checks" I heard "Make him ride bad jacks." I had no idea what bad jacks was but that disturbed the hell out of me.
Thank you so much for talking about this game, I absolutely loved - and still do - love it.
And yeah. The Hoodoo Sorcerer Theme is a bop.
Hey, it's that guy who remixed the theme! That track and this level are easily the most nostalgic bits of Rayman 3
This level scared the 6-7 years old me SO BAD, that traumatissed me for 5 YEARS
One day the Desert of the Knaaren theme started randomly playing in my head, then i remember this place being scary as hell and that i had a similiar exprerience of being traumatized because of this level as a child. I should totally play this classic again.
Oh i remember the days, this game has such a great place in my heart. From all those various themed levels, such a simple yet challenging gameplay and this very hilarious script and story, you easily fall in love with such a game. Still, this one level, i remember being so scared, even though i somehow made it through, i avoided this level as much as possible. This was when i was 6 years old. Now i am 22 and after playing this game again a few days ago, i always see the levels after this one as a complete new chapter, like a sequel you have waited for a long time. I think no game has scared me more than this one level, and this game is for 6 year olds according to our fellow german USK rating!
Afterall, i wish ubisoft was focused more on sequels in this 3D style, not like Origins or Legends. But PS2 games were such an era that had sooo many good titles. I always will see this as the best game i have ever played.
I played this game for the first time as a 13 year old and was extremely creeped out by this level. I can only imagine how terrified I would have been if I was younger! This level stuck with me years later and is always the first thing I think of when remembering this game.
The fact that Reflux is the only Knareen you can punch never stops being funny.
Dude I am having a massive wave of nostalgia right now. Yeah when I was a kid, I was really scared of this level too. Still I wanted to know how the game ends, so I just went through the entire level and man I had a BLAST with the Reflux boss. Actually I believe that the Reflux fight is the best video game boss fight I’ve ever played. After that I wasn’t scared anymore because I would go through those stealth areas in the tunnels, just to fight that boss again & again.
Not sure if it's specifically called "the tunnels" you have to go through in english, cause in the german version they call it the catacombs, meaning you have to go through the place where many creatures have come to be buried.
Sometimes you can see blue glowing rocks in the floor (especially at that one part where you fall down and have to climb back up with rocks falling down at you), where those weird skeleton chickens spawn, which are most likely graves.
Also, the english version is missing a great joke where two knaaren talk about that theirs is much bigger than the other ones and one says "stop talking about your robes" lol.
The only thing i was scared about were the voice lines "let him sweat blood" "let him run meat with salt is tastier" it was so terrifying for me as a kid
FINALLY. I couldn't go past it as a kid. In most reviews it's hardly mentionned so I thought I was only one of a few
honestly, the knaaren were scary to me, but reflux was fucking cool. like, i didnt think of him as weak even though hes the only one we were able to beat, i thought he was cool because he's the only one who had magic, and the design for his spells was fantastic. and later on the last boss fight REALLY helped me to put him on the top 3 bosses i've fought in any game ever list.
This is my favorite Rayman game it deserves a remastered version of it.
Or another installment. Let's pretend Raving Rabbids never existed.
I think I was a weird kid. This level definitely would have scared me, but I remember playing Majora's Mask and Ocarina of Time without being spooked. This video was great though, I really enjoyed hearing someone talk about a spook in an innocuous video game. ❤
You may have not experienced this but when I played the game on PC for the first time when I was 9 or 10 years old, and were in the Knaaren Desert world - I was bumping on a Knaaren despite they pushing me back on each hit, until the entire game pauses and a Teensie appears in the middle of the screen and reminds you about how MUST NOT touch the Knaaren or you will die. The level itself didn't make me feel as terrified as experiencing the Teensie King appearing on the middle of my screen and telling me about the do not's of encountering a Knaaren. Even now, as I'm typing this, I've felt several chills because I just thought of how younger players like me back then may have felt the same anxiety and insecureness. Honestly, even dumb things like Sonic.exe's "hyper realistic blood" stare with the phrase "I AM GOD" made me feel anxious and scared back then so I couldn't sleep well for a few days.
It can be summed up like this.
Objective: Assist Globox
*enters the desert of the Knaaren*
Objective: Survive.
I remember playing this level as a kid. I was actually too scared to play it... I think they way I got over it was by muting the tv and panic running through it.
I replayed when I was older and it still scares me 😂
"Mine is bigger than yours!"
"Maybe! But mine is muuuuch longer. Look, i can even touch it with my nose!"
"Will you two shut up about your hoods?"
First dirty joke encountered in a videogame as a child (ofc I noticed many years later lol)
Although I traduced it from the Italian version, I don't know if it was the same in English
Oh my God I don't remember this joke! Obviously flew over my head (I'm Italian and played the game in Italian so I must've heard this)
I realized later on, how much the morbid dialogues (in the french version at least) were over the line for a game rated 7+ ... I mean, "suck his eyes" or "to bath in his blood" what the fucking hell ?!
Obviously like many people, the Knaarens gave me nightmares as a kid; a funny detail however, is that in these dreams I always had the perspective of playing the game, rather than actually experiencing the situations through my own eyes. As I remind of it, it makes me think that I was more scared of the very feeling of *playing through the level* rather than the universe itself.
Hell, I would be startled and drop the controller every time a Knaaren hit me, and the rumble feature really added up to the scare !
One of my nightmares in particular was about muting the TV with the remote, only for it to make the sound even louder and louder (my brain really played with my heart on this one haha !)
It's great that you emphasized how big of a role the soundtrack had in setting the mood. God I HATED the stage in the big open room with the tooth-shaped platforms. That music was really eerie to me with its ritualistic tones, and the Knaarens NEVER stop going on with their horrible quotes until you reach the next stage. After a few playthroughs, I realized I could mute dialogues in the game options and it quickly became a default move 😂
I could go over and over about everything that was traumatizing with this level (it's also quite a labyrinth at times, increasing further the feeling of hopelessness) but anyways, it is a strong memory and I don't really regret it; it just goes to show how dedicated the whole team behind the game was, in conveying strong and specific emotions with every location in this amazing game. But yeah, maybe it didn't have to be to this extent 😰
Also, THANK YOU for pointing out how the only guy you can beat has never been beaten by any of his own kind, not to mention that you kick his ass a second time while he has grasped the power of his tribe's god ?! Cherry on the top🥲
Anyways, that was a really good watch, you went with much detail in everything about this level and I simply think you said it all !
On that, I'll go listen to the snow level soundtrack on loop for a few hours, just to get back to a much warmer atmosphere. Peace ❤
The Playstation 2 version of Monster House really scared me as a kid and even to this day honestly. The entire game just has a really claustrophobic and isolated feel to it, playing as a character trapped in an old house that also happens to be alive and not happy that you're there terrified me. Another thing that kept me on edge throughout the whole game was the fact that any of the seemingly ordinary objects in the house could suddenly spring to life and attack me.
The creepy atmosphere really comes to a point in the basement level though, where the character is in this huge maze that consists of children's toys and circus equipment, most notably a gigantic carousel with an extremely disturbing clown face on it. On top of the atmosphere and the usual tension in the game, there are also these huge living pipes that drop from the ceiling and attack the character. If you haven't already, I'd really recommend checking it out.
I KNEW I'm not the only scared about knaarens when I was a child
I KNEW IT!! IT'S AMAZING TO KNOW
To make it worse the knarren sticks all the way up to become the final boss taking on a EVEN MORE nightmarish form
That’s Reflux.
@@ChristianFrates1997 he's still a Knaaren isn't he?
I'm gonna be honest, I was legit scared of the Knaaren and indeed stopped playing because it scared me too much as a kid. My mom told me to try it again and when I heard one of those Knaaren tell me to Write bad cheques, my mother laughed, which made me laugh as well without understanding it yet. But I got used to the Knaaren in such a weird way
I’m so happy to see so many people loving Rayman :)) I would crap my pantaloons every time a Knaaren spotted me
I loved this game as a kid. Just like you i also got it as a present. What really made this game special is the attention to ambience and atmosphere they put in it. Desert of the Knaaren truly was like a depiction of hell. Personally my favorite level was The Land of the Livid Dead, had a really mystical vibe to it which at times also made it kinda eerie hehe
I couldn't complete this game for YEARS because of this level.
Not as disturbing as the extremely mutated Reflux at the end of the game, that was the most metal part of the game.
When i was little, Rayman 3 was my absolute FAVORITE game!! My lil sister and I were absolutely obsessed with the knaarens, i don't remember the level "scaring" us , it was mostly intriguing because it was soooo different from the rest of the game or any games we were playing at that time (nintendogs, alexandra lederman and such...)
I find it funny however to see how the english version is a bit more "softened" than the original french version (since Rayman is a french license). We never had those soft "let him write bad checks" dialogues and such, just some "bath in his blood", "rip his nails off", "brain...fresh braiiin..." gory stuff.
Also ! I find it funny that in english they changed a whole dialogue between some knaarens , the one that goes like "My dad is stronger than yours ! - oh yeah?? well my dad is taller -Will you two stop arguing about your dads?" in french they really implied a dick joke there by going "Mine is bigger -Oh yeah? well mine is WAY longer -Aren't you done arguing about your hoodies?"
Overall this level was sooooo good !! Cherished memories
Being the said little sister, I couldn't agree more with what she said. And we both really hope that one day, this incredible game benefits a remake, because it truly deserves one.
We developed a bit of an addiction for the whole game, finding glitches and other cool stuff in every levels, but yes the knaarens have definitely something more. Idk if it's their "charisma" (ubisoft making them invincible) or just the chara design , but they're not kings of the desert for nothing
don't forget the grand minimus appearing on your screen the moment you first get hit by a knaaren
that was one of the bone-chilliest moments for me
I don’t remember being scared of this level, but i remember how shocking it was too see the Final Boss. Especially the scene before that, when you have to take the spiral stairs and you hear Reflux and Andre talking. Not that he wasn’t scary before, but he turned in a terrifying monster. I also found was quite sad to destroy him at the end, because his sole reason behind his actions were revenge and not world domination like Andre.
In other words: I just love this game to death 😂
Rayman 3 truly is a masterpiece! I will also have to agree, I felt bad for Reflux as a kid and how his body transformed like that!
The music was enough to scare the hell out of me
God, I absolutely hated the zombie chickens.
There was a section where you needed to Carey an egg from point A, to point B...if you have fallen into the hole underneath then the music started playing and those things SWARMED YOU. As a small child It made me panic soo badly.
I played the game together with my brother when I was 5 and he was 8. My hands where too small to reach all the buttons on the keyboard at the same time which is why I had to play it with him. When we reached the Knaaren we managed to beat the very first section but my brother never wanted to play the game again. Roughly 7 years later I bought the game with 12 and played it on my ps2. I was finally able to beat the desert but I was still always very stressed. Today I've played through the game multiple times and by now with 21 I feel like the Knaaren are okay but they still send a chill down my spine whenever I enter there domain.
Side note: The dialogs on different languages very heavily. I played the game in English, French and German to compare the humor and it is drastically different. When you go up the tower for example they say: A: "My father is stronger than yours." B: "Maybe, but mine is taller" C: "Hey, stop talking about this nonsense" in English. In German however they say: A: "Mine is bigger than yours." B: "Maybe, but mine is longer. I can even touch my nose with it". C: "Hey, could you please stop talking about such things".
In the group ganging up scene the German Knaaren griefs over his dead rat btw.
Thank you for sharing your story with the game, that’s awesome!
when i first played this i was so freaked out by the knaaren in the first room i completely missed the gong mechanic and was stuck in the pit for ages. i ended up replaying the first 4 worlds for years before i had the guts to poke around and actually figure out how to escape.
the teensies really trolled me - i took their warning so seriously slkdjf but i still haven't gotten over those damn chickens.
I went through something quite similar as a kid with the game; completely freaking out at first and not understanding what to do when the Knaaren first showed up. I kept replaying the previous worlds too, those were at least manageable! Took me a long while before I finally finished this level...
Bro it’s been over almost 18 years for me and I’m heading back to beat this game soon on gog and i can promise you that the mummy level was scary af and it left a lasting impression on me.
Ahh... The first video game level I was too scared to play by myself as a kid...
Good times.
I personally believe this is one of the scariest moments in games that were meant for kids.
Yeah, it’s definitely up there as one of the scariest!
I have very fond memories of staying up really late in the summer playing this game with my cousin. We were stuck on one of the transitioning surf modes lol good times
Glad to know i wasnt the only one who found this level absolutely terrifying. I stopped playing the game at that point...
When i first played this level i was scared cuz of the way the Knaaren looked, it was like if i stepped a single feet closer to them they would just freaking kill me with absolutely no mercy, but looking back at it the level itself is not really scary, it's kinda just a stealth-like level imo
Me:*Screams loudly*
Mom:what are you doing
Me knowing very well im playing ray man 3:watching a soccer game
I just got my older brother to do it for me while I watched.
I've been playing Rayman 3 for 15 years, also watched my brother playing it for many years, and to this day, I still am terrified of Knaarens😵
P.s. Knarrens can jump on floating platform in great hall. First time this happened i screamed😂 *new fear unlocked*
I remember I could not get through the desert of the Knaaren for the longest time when I was a kid, and I just stopped playing Rayman for a couple years before picking it back up and finishing it properly
10/10 game
As a kid, your understanding of the game boils down to pretty much:
Enemy bad
Hit enemy
Enemy gone
You win
So when these fuckers first apeared your first instict was to most likely fight them
As soon as you tried you realized how wrong you were when the attack just bounced off
Not knowing what to do against these *(to a small kid)* towering monsters that charge towards you without stopping screeming and yelling as they attempt to beat the shit out of you, you start to panic and develop a general fear towards them
Because the very thing the game has thought you so far is now completely ineffective against this new enemy
Your only option is to run and hide from them
It took me quite a while for me to complete this area because of my general fear against these things
Especially the tower where you have to avoid their line of sight
Because as a kid i was unable to do precise movement and would always end up triggering them
I was so scared of the ghost chickens in rayman 2 and 3. WHO CAME UP WITH THAT HORROR THEME SONG
>Be me
>Rednarok lvl 8.
>Findgameplay of Amnesia on the youtube.
>Watch every episode in two nights
>You can't go to your hallway for five days, couse you're scared AF.
Wow, you covered everything, even the Hoodoo theme. I used to keep them alive just to listen to it and I haven't stopped listening to it.
Used to do the exact same thing! Their theme was just too damn groovy.
Polokus must've had one hell of a nightmare to be able to create those guys.
i can remember that when a knaaren sees you while being on a unreachable spot they give the throat cut gesture.
DUDE! I also played and got this demo disc for the pc, from Mcdonald's Happy Meal. This of course, also got me very hooked on this game. I eventually got the full game for my 9th birthday......ahh, the memories :)
I felt really terrified after playing the tower of the leptys. For one, the soundtrack sounds like there is some power that makes you insane. For the other, the setting for the fight against reflux made me feel like we really got close to apocalypse
Man, Rayman 3 is legit my childhood! This game actually came with the PS2 my folks surprised me with it for my birthday when I was about 9 or ten. I remember first seeing this level and thinking, incoming danger and doom; before the caves, I was fine but when I saw the Knaaren, overwhelming sense of fear and I stopped playing the game for three years. Even after all those years and going back to playing it again, something about the Knaaren still freak me out but I find there humor when they;re talking amusing
