I've started a series of Vlogs I'm calling Village photo walks where I explore in my local area armed with just my Zeiss Ikon Nettar and one roll of film. So far I've been doing fairly well, even managed to get a print for a lady cheekily waving at me from a Butchers shop back to her. Last week, I tried again and after 3 shots, the heavens opened... Not been back since and I've finished the roll elsewhere. Oh dear, never mind.
The highlight of your video was the shot of the pie and mash. I lived in London until the ripe old age of ten and a trip to the pie and mash shop with my mother was a real treat - especially when she also got a side order of stewed eels. One week before my 10th birthday, we moved to West Yorkshire - and my treats became pie and peas, tripe and black puddings. I am now 74 and retired in Thailand. I still miss pie and mash.
My old manor back in the 80s! Used to row at the Curlew Rowing Club near the Trafalgar. Occasionally we used to use the rowing tank at Poplar and Blackwall Rowing Club on the other side of the river. We used to run down those stairs, run along the tunnel and then up the stairs, do an hour in the tank and then run back. Brutal training! Usually plenty to photograph in Greenwich. You picked a bad 'un.
Doesn't matter what comes out of the camera, as long as you had fun and I think we all enjoy getting some news from you, so keep it up and see you soon.
You have to get yourself into a Martin Henson state of mind. No matter the weather - he's out there, obviousely enjoying what he's doing (or he just does not show the other days ;)). Thanks for trip to London and best wishes from Austria!
Thank you for this video. I just had an outing last week--fogged film--the entire roll! and out-of-focus digital images--utter disaster, and I've been very discouraged because of it. Seeing you have difficulties reminded me that it happens even to the best. :-)
Greenwich is one of my regular spots for (trying) street and urban. I think they have been filming for some blockbuster recently so parts of the naval college were taken over. Also, back in the day ('90s for me) there were some epic 2nd hand clothes shiops like Emporium and Bullfrogs.
Thanks, I enjoyed that trip down memory lane. When I moved to England in 1992 I lived just off Shooters Hill and loved to spend weekends exploring Greenwich and S.E London. I much preferred the old London shame to see what its turned / turning into.
One of my favourite areas to hang around when I was a kid wasn't just redeveloped. They leveled several blocks and build a ultra shiny modern stadium on it. No more back alleys to explore :(
It is how it is, sometimes great and sometimes not so. This is my fave area of London, could spend all day there and whenever we come to London we stay in Greenwich. Great place to get on the boats up and down the river, no tube for us. I really enjoyed this one as usual but being southeast London even better, thanks.
Even though it might not have turned out like you had imagined your day, I found it quite entertaining. I haven't been to the city for at least 25 years now - but I did remember some of the places... BUT: Didn't you say, the lift didn't work? I thought I saw someone get into the lift at 11:40... ;-) Keep'em coming - some are instructional, some are funny, but all of them are entertaining. Thank you for sharing.
Good morning Boss I'm a big fan of yours, I really admire your work and i thank you, because, with what you do you have made me want to shoot with film again. I really like Great Britain and i hope to return as soon as possible to visit it, after having seen London there was a pandemic and i am no longer welcome to come. Keep it up, a special thanks from Italy, from the city of Milan. And sorry for my imperfect English Thanks thanks thanks
Great to see the Cutty Sark and Greenwich. It was one of my commute routes from the City (before it moved to Docklands). Used to storm through there on my Honda cub. So much of London is great for black and white photography.
Vid is great, glad it’s not just me that has off days. But that said the shots that you have are fine, some of the ones around the Thames look great, a proper cast back, reminds me of some of the gritty 60 Caine films 🤣. Put them away and look at them in a month once you have forgotten about the day it’s self, you will probably see them differently. Keep up the great work. 👍👍
It is great to see a real world photography drama….it felt like my usual trips :) lol But is wasn’t boring….I enjoyed the nostalgia angle even though I have nothing to do with London. But made me think about my past haunts. I enjoy the idea you have stimulated for others to think about.
This vid was great showing some of the older sites, your recollections and some good images.Even when it's not going well (for you) your enthusiasm is that of a twenty year old.Cheers.
Enjoyed the walk around. Always love seeing others, as the visit old places to see the changes. So now I know where the famous whisky , got it name. That's what I would have done, hit the pub. KB
This is a great vlog - you usually see 'perfect' videos on RUclips, where everything goes right, so it's kind of inspiring to know that other people sometimes have the same kind of 'bad days' as me.
Really enjoyed it Roger... we are all used to seeing the "Glass/Glitzy" side of London but to see these parts around where you grew up etc.. brilliant. :-) I had a pint of that beer (Tribute ) sat outside a pub opposite St Micheals Mount at Merizion in Cornwall a few years back... a lovely pint. Many thanks.
I did embrace it. Especially the pinhole. Did not want that wet. And the building works was a bummer. But I guess I thought oh well, I'm here may as well get some rain shots. So needed a lens hood!!
@@ShootFilmLikeaBoss I have a few high quality reproduction posters from Ansel Adams, but the one I really love is the one from Walker Evans. It is titled Saratoga Springs New York 1931. It is a photograph of a lot of old cars parked on a deserted road with a row of trees, all most unremarkable but for the rain that makes this photograph a masterpiece. It is truly a thing of beauty, simple but most elegant. Have a look at it on Google if you have not seen it to date, can't tell the format, but it is either 8X10 or 4X5, heck I love soft rain.
where is the link to the guy with the prints!? we all have off days! great video, going to london soon. My granddad was from dalston. im from chatham lol
Id been looking forward to a SFLAB video for awjioe checking each day if there was a post. Even your off days looks good. I've spent a few days trips around London for photography but never thought about Greenwich. I'll have to head down there. The under pass photo looks mint 👌.
@@ShootFilmLikeaBoss hope your back gets better soon. I assume it was damaged carrying your Intripid large format camera. You should pack a lighter bag and just focus on your nikon F6 and 35mm.
Sad to see you having a bad day shooting. I try to put my heart into my photography but I am always disheartened by either the results or lack of creative adaptation. You almost always find beauty in whatever situation is thrown at you - that pinhole shot is testament to that. Keep on, Roger!
I remember being upset when the Cutty Sark went on fire as well. I'd visited it as a kid on a trip from my Dad's works (nobody would believe in this day and age that companies part payed for the employees families to go on a junket by coach for a day). I don't live far now from Dumbarton, where the Cutty Sark was built. The ruins of the dock is still there, filled with sunken boats and lined with new flats. Cutty Sark actually means 'short nightdress' ....... I wonder what the engineers were thinking of when they were building it 😉 Nothing wrong with the shots by the way ..... particularly like the Greenwich Park one with just a few people walking about.
@@ShootFilmLikeaBoss Those Dumbarton girls have a reputation. I was in a pub on the main street and heard a girl ask for a pint of Tennents and a couple of straws. I asked her if she was sharing the pint with a friend, she looked at me witheringly, 'No, it makes it look classy', she replied !
Well, when I have one of those days, I'll have a pint or two and listen to the 1961 song by The Shirelles - "Mama said there'll be days like this. There'll be days like this, my mama said." Enjoyed the vid regardless...
Remember, you can never go home again!!! All my youth is gone, so much "growth" and ugly buildings have replaced my favorite places!!! I have been trying to document what's left whenever I can ... maybe not the most interesting photos to others, but interesting to me!!!
It's a shame they're knocking down all the buildings with character. At least your vlog and images are a record of the area. Despite the conditions, there were some nice images from the outing. I liked the one with the domed bulding framed by the columns...and I also liked the wet cobblestone street shots.
Those pictures didn't look bad to me at all, especially the ones with the reflections . Maybe you had the wrong expectations. Happens to me a lot, Ad first I dislike my photographs, later on I appreciate them more because of what they are.
Greenwich is pretty much owned by Knight Dragon, which means it’s owned by one man. It will be under water by 2050 and I couldn’t be happier. I hope all that ponzi development gets sluiced with the tide.
At 13:30 the shot was straight down the hall with the people sitting at the end on the left. At least you suffer for your art. Video was good because in real life what happened to you happens to others out trying to shoot. I know that guy on DP review in Canada is a big puddle reflection fan, so there's that, maybe. Good work, best wishes, blame Putin. If anything goes wrong just blame Putin. Rain, blame Putin. Constipation, blame Putin, hemorrhoids, blame Putin. Light leaks, you know it's him.

Roger, you made something of it and more importantly got a pint at the end of it. Tribute is a fine ale too :)
