How To Gap Your Golf Bag

- Picking a new driver and irons is generally fairly simple. But what clubs should you put in play in that awkward gap in the middle?
I headed down to the Titleist Performance Centre at Woburn to dial in the gap in my golf bag and find out how to gap your golf bag correctly.

I've got a 28, 25,22, and 18 degrees loft in my hybrids, they have replaced all my long irons for the last 3 years, I carry an 8,9, pitching and gap wedge, plus my favorite 56 degrees cbx zip groove wedge, this has gapped my clubs perfectly and gotten rid of the hard to hit long irons.great video hanna!⛳⛳⛳⛳⛳⛳⛳⛳⛳⛳
Hybrids are so good as long iron replacements! make things so much easier. Nice set-up!!
Similar situation for my bag! My 3 & 4 hybrid only had a few yards difference. I got fit for another 3 hybrid to fill the gap between the 5 iron and 5 wood
Good video Hannah . I struggled a bit with hybrids and ended up going 5 wood 7 wood . Been a great change for me
I am loving the swap to a 5 wood currently ☺️
Hey hannah, really enjoying the videos. Great to see some relevant swing speeds on RUclips instead of 300+ drives. Keep up the great work
Thank you!!
Yep, those other sites are just not relatable to we mere mortals. Hannah's still a bit good for me but much closer.
thanks for another enjoyable Honest video Hannah, think we all have few clubs in the bag that do the same distance, think I need a gapping session, & man you can hit that 4 iron well, hope you have great weekend
Thanks! 4 iron is amazing for tight tee shots too
As I never got on with a driver or hybrids etc,now have a 15 degree,18 and 21 degree utility irons instead and significantly lowered my score. A little less in distance about 220 with 15 degree but find also after using the long irons the shorter irons seem easier to use. It's of course personal as is all in golf. Good video.
You're like me. I hate the look of hybrids and much prefer utility irons.
Oh interesting!!
So which ones did you end up going with and the specs ? very curious ,.... I am thinking of going with the TSR2 in the 4 wood and the 7 wood......great hits cheers from Canada
I went for the TSR2 3-wood and the TSR3 5-wood. I liked the smaller 5 wood head as it plays more like a hybrid and is more versatile!
Very interesting. Your swing speed and carry numbers are really close to mine (you’re a much better golfer though!) and I struggle with gapping the top of my bag. 6 and 5 iron difference is negligible and I have a big gap from 5 iron to 5 hybrid.
Could easily change the 5 iron (traditional loft of 27 degrees) and put in a stronger lofted 5 like a Hot Metal type club. 👍🏻
Yes definitely! Or even try a 6 hybrid? It’s all about finding something that works for you
@@hannahholdenNCG wait, so from 5 iron to 5 wood, what will you use now? So 3 and 4 iron are minor differences?
My 6 iron goes 150m and then 10m up or down with each club. The tricky thing is allowing for wind and elevation changes!
Yes, wind can wreck havoc on carry distances especially if you hit it high!
What about trajectory? I have just changed my irons and have15 yard gapping now with my irons from LW to 5i and am working on the new choices. But with the old set, I was
6i - 155-165
5i - 160-170 low, running landing
4H 175-185 mid. Slight fade
7w - 180 -190 high, soft faded landing
For those shallow, elevated greens, the extra height on the 7w helps - even thought there was quite a lot of overlap, they were different enough to carry. The 4H was also the clear choice under trees, not the 7w.
But having just changed to 921 HMs, where I am getting
6i 155-160 carry run out +10 firm. high & straight
5i 170-180 carry, run +10. mid-high, v small fade
The 5i is now hitting elevated fronts where the hybrid was, and is longer on the flat - the 4H is essentially redundant, and I have a clear overlap. I've got a 4i on order to see how that will work for a lower one - I would expect all hybrid options to be higher..
Ideally you want all your clubs to fly high enough that they stop fairly quickly. If one is running out too far I would try find a higher launching iron or a hybrid replacement.
For example my 5 iron is a T200 up from a T100S in my 6 as it flys higher and stops quicker.
@@hannahholdenNCG Definitely as a first choice, having everything as high stoppers is a good default, and that's what I've got from 8i down. But my 15y gapping does progressively include more run as the club gets longer and the trajectory a bit lower. My 4i arrived just in time for the end of summer fairways, and it's a great driving iron - with a lower trajectory. It's also really nice from under trees. The 921 HMs do have a high, towering flight and big distance, but the consequence is a touch less spin compared to the HM pros. And much of the time, the extra distance is fine - unless I want to clear trouble.
But my course has some shallow elevated greens. I need to be even higher to get stop on those; having both low and high trajectory full shot options in the bag is good. I'm looking now at adjustable hybrids, and setting them for a fade landing to increase stop. Conversely, it's nice to stay below the treeline sometimes, on windy days.
I turn my driver loft down too in the summer when run is there, and up in the winter when carry matters more - I think you have offered that as tip before?
My previous clubs I could hit a punch too, another good way of hitting low. Not sure I have mastered that yet with the new ones, forgiveness is not always helpful!
I have regular flex shafts. I was at my local driving range and was not hitting the ball vary far with my driver. When I tried to speed up my down swing I lost control. Do I have to change my shafts or live with the length that I am driving now? Obviously, changing shafts is going to be very expensive.
Best bet is to try one with a stiffer shaft and see. You can pick new shafts up online for as little as £50. What driver do you have? Is it adjustable?
@@hannahholdenNCG My driver is a Dunlop Tour Red with a regular graphite shaft. Loft is 10.5 which is not adjustable.
Very cool Hannah. So the top of your bag now is driver, 3 wood, 5 wood, then going into 4 iron? you essentially switched 3&4 hybrids for a 5 wood and 4 iron, is that correct?
Yes that is exactly what I have done! Complete swap, first time I have ever not had a hybrid 😳
@@hannahholdenNCG 5 woods are as good hybrids utility and versatility wise :) Good luck with the new clubs!
@@hannahholdenNCG Haha love it. 9 times out of 10 fittings educate golfers on how they need MORE help in the long end of the bag, so "thrash dat hybrid, you need a 4i Hannah!" was absolutely awesome. Guess at this point even you realized you're the real deal on the course, though your viewers already knew that for a while. :D Greetings from germany and keep the good stuff coming!
I've just been fitted for a full set and there will be a gap between 3 wood and 6 iron. I think the pro will be going for a 7 wood. I don't like hybrids....
7 woods are great, I have a 5 wood too
Always put an umbrella in the bag,ya know the one that doesn't fit, then a garden secatur that is rusting to cut back the nettles and if yer dawg is small enough stuff him in the ball department,be sure to leave room for a bacon butty with peanut butter, and this is crucial a bottle with cold tea,,now your set,
Very interesting you have to rely on the man seeing the numbers
Jesus... you hit your 3 hybrid longer than I hit driver!
Oops 🤣
He certainly knows what he is talking anout but you have to believe him
Definitely!
