Are Scratch Golfers Actually That Good?

- Is it actually as hard as we think to play scratch golf? I've dug into the Shot Scope data to show you that a scratch handicap isn't about playing perfect golf, and it is way more achievable than most of us think.

This is great information for us lowly NO WHERE NEAR scratch golfer's 😅. My aim right now as a HIGH handicapper is find more fairways. Play to your ability not to what you see on TV. Work on one thing at a time. Love your channel ❤️
I'm a scratch player and honestly I would say only about 2 out of 10 shots go close to where I'm aiming. However, I'd say DECADE golf helped me get to scratch as I can miss but I now miss on the good side. I'm realistic with my expectations. And I'd say the most important thing is putting like a plus 1 handicapper.
My index is 0.2 at the moment and I've only ever shot under par 3 times. So it shows exactly what you said. It's not about making more birdies, it's about making fewer bogeys.
I’m a scratch player too (+1) and there’s not much difference really between my long game and my mates who play off 12-16. I hit a bit further and more consistently, but that doesn’t really affect the scoring much. But I find a massive difference in the short game, even simple chipping is hard for them. And they 3 putt an awful lot. I don’t even think I’m that good at golf, I just don’t make as many mistakes as them.
@davidgraham8058 exactly, I would say I'm a good scrambler and since I learnt aimpoint express my 3 putts have reduced a lot as now I never start the ball on the low side, so my second putts are now much closer. I play loads of scratch comps and can definitely say that 50% fairway hit seems generous!
@@bengoulding9723 my mates seem to think I must be like a tour player if I’m off scratch but they treat scratch as some kind of Holy Grail. I tell them that an 18 handicap is much closer in ability to me than I am to a tour player, but they just don’t understand the levels. I was quite disappointed when I realised how easy it was to get to scratch.
I do also find that I’m the only person at the range who actually practices properly. Most people hit driver or 7 iron only. I never practice hitting driver. I always practice 50, 75, 100yd carry and distances in between. I also practice hitting shot shapes, low, high. Mid handicappers don’t even bother.
Every golfer regardless of handicap should watch this, great vid.
I play regularly with two scratch golfers, on bad days id say both their driving is questionable, but recovery from those bad drives is utterly fantastic.. Short irons are to within 5-10ft on approach (unless something drastic happens with the bounce).. BUT... and more importantly, niether make many two putts 🤯
Also both aren't super long of the tee btw.. 260 max. Learning what they do from 200yds in has taught me loads... just a shame I lack the skill to copy it 😂😂
To understand how a scratch or plus handicap plays you need to watch them, not just on their best days but other days as well. Also with WHS it's your best 8 scores that produce your handicap index, not the other 12 scores.
can’t believe she doesn’t have at least 100k followers. some great content on this channel
Maybe one day!
The good players I’ve played with recover better than higher hc. So absolutely will miss greens but when they do, chipping and putting to either save par or single bogey only is the difference I see.
Great vlog, the truth as opposed to other RUclipsrs retaking there shots to make them look better than they are..
Love your channel Hannah, no flaunting just straight up good content.
Thank you!!
This was brilliant, H! Two years ago I started my quest to reach scratch and had many of these same misconceptions (and reactions of self loathing 😂) and it was defeating to think about. I am currently a 6 handicap and getting closer to scratch every day.
Keep up the great content.
Glad it was helpful!
Possibly the most insightful video I have watched, and I have watched a lot!
Wow, thanks!!
Well there we go.. so much sense in 5 minutes... thankyou. Change my mindset
Great makes me feel better at 24 handicap
So to sum up, all I need to do is cut my tee to green shots down by 3, get my 150 shot average about 135 feet tighter, and cut 3 strokes off my putter? Got it 😂
😂😂😂😂😂
Hannah, you make some great points, golf to par is not easy, but you need to put the time in, no shortcuts🏌️♀️⛳️
excellent stuff Hannah 👍
Thank you!! 😁
the other big misconception about scratch golfers is the handicap system, and the fact that they don't have to shoot even par to play to their handicap....depending on course rating and conditions (daily rating) a scratch marker could shoot 3-4 over par and still get assessed at "0.0" on the day by the system
Yes definitely !!
Hope today goes well Hannah at WHGC
Stats are always great fun. Good video
Thanks!
Great work
I've noticed the biggest difference between the 4 hdcp and 14 hdcp is how many times the 14hdcp leave themselves 2 putt distance when chipping.
And most low single digit players consistently hit approach shots pin high. You don’t have to knock down pins, you just grind out pars and the occasional birdie by hitting your scoring irons in particular pin high. None of the bogey golfers I play with hit the ball pin high more than a couple times per round. You can’t score that way. Most of them have no idea how far they even hit their average iron shots.
It’s all about playing to your handicap, whether +2 or -24.
I was scratch 10 yrs ago but jacked the game in fast forward to now and im back playing currently play off 3 and so having been scratch and even now very low i know exactly what it is that makes the difference and its Mostly short game.....
Nice one Hannah. Great video, and very insightful. Going to be a lot less hard on myself during the journey to scratch golfing knowing this!
Blown away from some of those stats. Too hard on myself.
They’re mad aren’t they!!
@@hannahholdenNCG crazy. I won't be getting angry missing the green from 100 any more, maybe missing a 1 foot putt still 🤣
Don’t forget short game , probably more important than distance off the tee . Great video Hannah , very informative.
Brilliant 👍
Great information.
What KBS shaft are u using in your driver out of curiosity?
KBS TD 60 S!
@@hannahholdenNCG the catagory 3 S shaft is a great shaft I use the same,I’ve got a full bag of KBS shafts and I won’t use anything else, what length do u play it at and is your shaft tipped at all?
@@hannahholdenNCG I’m interested to see how a player of your calibre has their shaft set at so us amateur players can learn a thing or 2
Not even tour players hit every shot perfectly however they know how to manage the mistakes as you would do too
Yes definitely!
Well thats it. Golf advice can’t get any better. You’ve clearly made every other golf improvement channel utterly redundant now.
Everyone can now focus on course vlogs from now. Also, I’m not any good at taking advice anyways
Great information and
Nice video, and sorry you have to put up with so many pond life in the comments.
So, when a golfer, like yourself, becomes a plus handicap what are the stats then?
Hannah are you playing a stealth driver here very nice
Yes
@@hannahholdenNCG Very nice. Hitting it well
giving me hope Hannah :)
😂😂 you’re welcome
Hannah ❤
Put the trolls in their place Hannah!
Trying 😂😂😂😂
Iv heard scratch golfers average 1 more GIR than a 4 handicapper
“It’s really not that hard.”
😂😂😂😂
In theory it's simple haha
It’s honestly not that hard. Once you get the concept of the swing technically, without trying to do it too consciously, that quickly builds a consistent strike. From there, it’s just sharpening up the short game and a bit of course management.
Scratch golfers do better as a whole not just part of the game. They hit more fairway, up and down, and dropped in more putts to save their neck than a two-digit golfer. Another thing, when a scratch golfer or better player swings l can tell they are good players and it's the opposite of the less skilled players.
just as easy as that ha
Yes 😂😂😂
What is a scratch golfer . You can be scratch off fwd tees but put on back champ tees you now are not a scratch golfer.
Loved this! Excellent visualisation
Thank you!
