Great video Claire! Yep, same here I've made things that I would be like "I made it" - LOL, but now that I've grown quite a bit in my fitting process I know the adjustments I need to make.
I'm so looking forward to a sewalong. I've been sewing since I was a child while watching my nana and have basically learned, and had success, by fumbling along, making mistakes, and always making adjustments. I enjoy watching others share techniques as I have much to learn. Also, I've never followed a pattern that fit out of the envelope. I always have to make adjustments, even with Cashmerette and the like.
My favorite Patterns are the Sew By Pattern Pieces Ladies Fun Tee with cup sizes, Itch To Stitch Lago Tank (free), and also Nottingham Top from Itch To Stitch, Rad Patterns Angel Top with all the sleeves add on pack, and the Stitch Upon a Time Scrundies are also a favorite.
My most made patterns are the Springfield top by Cashmerette, and Shirt No. 1 and Pants No.1 by 100 Acts of Sewing. All are very easy to make. I've also had success with the WIksten Haori and the Wiksten shift.
Great suggestions Claire. I’ve been wanting to make Moneta but haven’t tried yet. I love the Jennifer Lauren Handmade Gable top - that’s my most made and so easy. I also love Tilly and the Buttons Coco - both the dress and top. My problem is opposite yours though - I’m bigger on top than bottom so finding bust size that works is my problem - the waist and hips are always bigger than what I need. Also the York Pinafore from Helen’s Closet. Love that one. Thanks for sharing your tips!
Me too! I made laundry day tees the for my first couple of projects, but they just look like tents after they have been over my G cups. My fave patterns so far have been Love Notions. I bought the Cashmerette Upton dress as so many people have raved about it , but I havent psyched myself up to do the zip ( very comforting to hear I'm not the only zip phobic) and I think the bodice is LINED ..AARGH. I do like the Appleton on Claire I must say
Hi Claire - Great pattern round up. Although I am not a plus size the Love Notions Laundry Day Tee is my favorite t-shirt of all time. I think I have made about 4 of them and want to do a couple for winter with 3/4 length sleeves if they offer it and if not I will find a sleeve to put on it that is 3/4” or just lengthen the short version. I think a sew along would be nice for your newer sewing friends. I’d watch just to have you keep me company for the time it takes to make it.
Hi Jan. Great to hear that you also love the laundry day tee! Your plans for more sound great. I will have this sewalong published at the end of September as part of #sewtember. Thank you as always for your support.
It is nice many indy pattern designers are being more inclusive with sizes (better late than never!) So encouraging you have had success with making garments out of the package too. When starting garment sewing it's enough to be able to sew a garment, never mind making alterations to the pattern. I have not yet tried Cashmerette or SBCC patterns but they're on my list to try.
Thanks. Yes, sewing patterns and altering is a lot when new to sewing! I found a learning curve to working out my alterations. Cashmerette are very good. I'm going to be making the Turner dress soon! I've made the holyoke and the appleton with great success and can recommend them x
@@Penguinandpear Glad to know Cashmerette patterns are worthwhile, I'll be sure to give them a try. When you have multiple alterations to make is there a particular order you do them in? I'm finding that some alterations, like a full bicep adjustment, will shorten the overall length which I didn't anticipate. If I do that adjustment first it helps with not having to shorten too much of the arm length. Are there other adjustment combinations you have found are best to do in a specific order?
Wonderful blog. As a plus size lady also, I was also happy just to find a pattern that would cover me. Then discovered how to adjust things and what a difference! A well fitted pattern made all the difference. You are such a help for us curvy gals, doing some of the research to find patterns that work best.
Great vlog Claire and thanks for all the useful information. I have purchased the laundry day tee based on your recommendation. My early favourite for big girls was the Dartmouth wrap front top by Cashmere the. I have made it several times and hacked into a dress. Happy stitching!
Thanks for watching Caroline. Glad you liked the recommendations! I'll be releasing a sewalong for that pattern at the end of September and you could enter into #sewtember as well!
Great vlog Claire! Thanks to efforts by vloggers like you, many more of the indie designers are widening the sizes of the patterns they offer, so well done for that! I think my go to pattern for the summer is another Love Notions and that is the Summer Basic. I really like Love Notions as they do the cup sizes! It is very similar to the Laundry Day tee but it is empire line which suits me better. Dorothy’s Daughter did a review on it if you are interested. Other than that, I love the Sheona top too ❤️
I would love watching a video on how to do the fitting issues for shoulder and neck area. I have the same exactly problem, and most things I make look too large, but always fit in the waist/tummy area. I also just followed your link for the Laundry Tee and have signed up to join their FB group. Looking forward to watching more of your videos.
Great video Claire! I would have to add the Amy top by Style Arc. I made it for my best friend who is very hard to fit. I also love the Appleton. Thanks for all your hard work in introducing us to inclusive patterns! ❤️
I've made three Appletons, and I have the CS pattern for the Laundry Day tee all printed and ready. I will check out your other recommendations! My three faves are AK, Cashmerette and Love Notions. I can rely on those companies to provide me with a well fitting pattern.
Hi Claire. Love the video. Would be nice to see some of these items revisted. Maybe with the hacks/changes they need. Also maybe some sew alongs for them. keep the vlogs coming. hope you enjoy your coffee x
Hi Vena. Thank you for your coffee and comment. There will be a sewalong for the laundry day tee at the end of September so I hope you'll enjoy that. Will def update you guys when I make these garments again. Thanks for watching x
Thank you so much for this it was very helpful. I would love to see a tutorial on how to change a neckline . I too have narrow shoulders and I often find necks to roomy. It was interesting to see you in some of your early makes.
Thank you so much! Next time I make the adjustment I will film it for a video as I am sure lots of people have this issue. Yes! the in the folds dress was one of my first and looking back at it I dont think its that bad on although I didnt like it at the time! x
Great video Claire! Sheona top is good as are most of AK Patterns. I can recommend Friday patterns who have increased the range of sizes on some of their patterns and who are working through the range. All new patterns are inclusive. Look carefully at the patterns and do t discount them for being frilly I would say. So e of them co e as dresses or tops and can look quite different depending on which style you prefer. I also like sew House Seven’s Toaster Sweater for winter / autumn and I have made this top about 5 times in varied fabrics and lengths.
Thanks Jan. I did buy the sunny top/dress as part of sewmystyle before they increased their sizing. Tbh I wasn't so impressed with their drafting but they were a new company then so perhaps they've improved. I do like the dress theyve recently released. I do own the toaster sweater but it's not up to my size. I also have the Jarrah by Megan Nielsen which I hope to try as winter heads in x
Love your chooses for large sizes... a good mix of styles... I did join the love notions group n will print the laundry day t soon to make up for fall wardrobe refresher... thank you for sharing your knowledge with us... blessings
Great video topic! All of those are great patterns! I don’t have a favorite pattern, but I do love Love Notions and Itch to Stitch for fit, although Itch to Stitch only goes up to 20, so they are not as inclusive.
Thanks Kim. I do have one itch to Stitch pattern but need to grade up. Such a shame their patterns are not inclusive as they are such lovely designs. Love notions are great!
Great list of patterns. I've got to get around to making the Shonea, I've really loved all your versions. Also, Larua from Speaky Seamstress recently made a Moneta as a top and I loved the look of that, I have it on my to-make list as well. I would say the Moneta is a great fit but sadly I've only made two of them and need to get more made.
You will love the Sheona. Such an easy make! The moneta is a good stable make I just have to get the neckline sorted. After the laneway I have a better idea I think...
I dont mind at all doing button holes, zips on the other hand if I could avoid I avoid 😂. I didnt jump on the zadie jump trend that was going on this summer. I think cuz I have a short upper body that's also 2-3 sizes smaller then my bum and hips lol. Thanks for the video
Thanks for watching Lola. I just loved the look of it but should've known I wouldn't feel comfortable in it. Still I have a lovely top pattern out of it x
I learned to make zipper pouches and bags first too! When I made them, I didn't know that I should fear a zipper. Ha Ha Ha! I learned a ton from Anna Graham (noodlehead patterns). The more I sew, the better I get.
That's the thing if you dont know to fear something generally you dont! It's like we all fear making trousers because we hear how difficult they can be to fit but no one beats an eyelid at making shorts and they're the same thing lol. I think making bags and pouches is a great idea for a beginner dressmaker!
Great video Claire! Yep, same here I've made things that I would be like "I made it" - LOL, but now that I've grown quite a bit in my fitting process I know the adjustments I need to make.
Thanks Nateida. It's funny how we change through our journey. It seems the more I learn the more I'm determined to learn! X

I agree with the Laundry Day Tee, I have made many and love them!
They're great aren't they!

Thanks Lynne. It is slowly getting better isnt it! Ooh nice one. I am pattern testing the basic tee in larger sizes atm. Xx

Hi Angel, thanks for the idea ill put it on my list of ideas. You'll love making the laundry day tee! X
excellent video thanks for doing these I really enjoy watching them

Thank you for the great ideas, used your links 🤗

Great information. Thank you for sharing.
Great video. I’ve heard of 4 of them but have made none 😀. I’m really tempted for the AK and the Appleton. I’m just not quite a particular size LoL
Thanks Janice. I can recommend those patterns wholeheartedly. Do you come in across sizes like me?

So happy to found your channel thanks for the sharing
Thank you Sarah! Welcome! x

Ahh thank you. I sewed these over years. Due to chronic illness I'm a slow sewer. Glad you like the channel!
