I make bags more than garments, but I had not sewn much for a couple of years. My sewing machine was giving me a hard time. Well, for Christmas, I got a new, nice sewing machine so I grabbed a bag pattern and cut out the pieces of the bag. I did not pre-read the instructions. First mistake: all the exterior pieces were cut on the fabric right side up, and all interior pieces were cut with the fabric wrong side up. I had to re-cut and re-interface all the lining pieces. Second mistake was not notching the pieces. The construction of this bag is not what I'm used to doing, and sometimes it's a challenge to know top from bottom. So much seam ripping. And wasted fabric and time when I tore a piece while using the seam ripper. You are right on target about these bad habits.
Speaking of patterns not suiting our body styles, I have gained a lot of weight and then lost it again. I now find that the clothes that suited my body before I gained and lost the weight no longer suit my body. For example, I actually have a bum now and I never had one before! Another thing is falling in love with a fabric that you won't actually wear. I've seen that so much on the de-stash videos. Thank you so much for this video, I would love to see one where you are deciding what styles work for you now!
I can relate. I’ve lost a lot of weight twice, my body has reacted very differently this time.
You are starting too look really slim!
Am I?! 🥰
I noticed that too❤
@@carolinarios2994 thanks! I’m getting there but my head still has to catch up!
I'd like to add to those pesky notches. I had a disaster of a pdf pattern for my daughter that over 50% of the notches didn't match on the pattern itself. If you start finding other issues with a pattern, double check those darn things. Literal hours wasted trying to match up notches that weren't even right! Loved your video today, I have made a lot of the same mistakes, too.
Hi Claire, another great video. Would like to see a video on knowing your own style. Our styles change with the shapes of our bodies, plus as we age. Cheers from Canada.
Great points!
Nice info, and so true! Thanks!
Claire you look so happy and comfortable in your new place and I am beyond thrilled for you. Cheers and much love to all your upcoming adventures and what ever it is that your heart desires! We're all excited to be here for it.
I think the last week or so I’ve turned a corner. Thanks for your support.
I like your setup in the lounge. Nice backdrop.
Thanks! It’s the only place in that room I can film, I’m in the process of stripping the wallpaper on the other side!
Claire you are looking amazing, well done on your weight loss. You also are looking far more content and relaxed xx
Thank you. It’s a process but I’m getting there
I’ve done several of those myself. Used to put it down to youthful impetuous mindset but now my go to is foggy brain old lady😜
Haha love it!
I hold my hands up. Winging it on sizing has caught me out in the past.
I'm working on measuring myself with each garment.
It helps that I reduced my stash to only fabrics I want to use and love.
This way I have to get the sizing right or I'm disappointed with wasting the fabric.
💟
Thanks Claire another informative vlog❤😊
You are a very smart lady Tks for your amazing videos I have learned so much from you👍
All great points!
For me, choosing a pattern that matches my style is key.
I finally invested in the Love Notions Duet trousers. They are plain, but fit my shape and lifestyle so well. I made a size 8 (I'm a 4 in RTW!) and they fit great! I will get so much more use out of a simple pair of well fitting black pants than I would out of a fancy, complicated, brightly color pair 😂.
And I feel GREAT with those on because there's no gaping in the back, no tightness around the hips, etc.
And I 100% agree that making the right size is slimming!
Fantastic video such great information! Thank you so much for sharing your own journey as it helps me and I know it will help many others. Yes, I'd love to see videos about knowing our own style!
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you. I've done them too! Take care
Hello Claire, Thank you so much for posting this very relative content!
As someone who has struggled with weight all my life, finding styles that flatter has always been tough... and now that I am aging, that adds another layer of concern.
I am also on a journey to better health (though not achieving as rapidly as you). My brain still sees me as the size I have been for the past several years.
OMG sizing. Made that mistake when I came back to sewing 4 years ago!! Wasting lovely fabric cured me very quickly!!! Years ago when I sewed I knew my size in Vogue patterns and that was it. Today it is a minefield. Tape measure is my friend whatever my size is. Also wasted money sewing trends that no longer suit my lifestyle as I am retired. Thanks for sharing. 😊. Lynne
When I was a kid and watching my mum sew many years ago the notches went outwards on the pattern. You had to cut around them. She didnt she cut them off and snipped into the pattern and fabric with just one cut. It seemed to work.
Yeah I’ve seen it both ways. I know some people cut in a little triangle even if the pattern says to snip.
I love the look of your new home Claire, plus the tips are always so on point.
@@vivienlee610 thank you
If I didn’t follow the instructions I hate to imagine what I would end up with. I would like to see sewing for your style. I’m just sewing easy things right now with what I’ve got going on health wise. It keeps my mind from thinking the worst and I make something for wearing or other things, and I find it’s way to escape things and relax for awhile. I’m getting a pattern altered to make some long skirts for church.
Sewing is great for keeping our mind off bad stuff 🙂
I’m guilty of a couple of those myself…
Hi Claire, I learned very early on (the hard way) about ignoring ready to wear sizes. My first creation was suited to Barbie...or more correctly Ken! You are looking wonderful 😍 🇦🇺 🐨
Hi Claire, I always read the instructions before I even put the pdf pattern together, then again after cutting the pattern out and while sewing the item. It took me sometime to wrap my head around that my RTW size and my pattern size are not the same. Do measure myself when I am about to sew a pattern from new to me pattern company - need to get better with measuring myself more often. Happy Sewing 🪡🧵
Hi Claire- new subscriber here from Vancouver, Canada. Brilliant video and I am guilty on all charges (ha ha)! Thank you for bringing up the sizing and the marketing aspects of sewing. I have also bought many patterns that look good on paper but will never fit or suit me. Looking forward to diving into more content.
Thanks for subbing! Welcome. I have a lot of similar talking head videos so do dive into them!
I am a plus size, too. I made one skirt that I just fell in love with that was not available in plus size...but it came out ok because it was SO BIG and the whole thing was gathered with a gathered waist. I am also VERY modest, so I like LONG dresses, and I really do not like showing every imperfection in my body. That is MY style. :)
Our lounge is lovely!!
Great video i have learnt through experience to read all the instructions i do practice garments also the lounge vibe is good have a great week 😊😊😊
Great video. I would love to see a video on finding your style. I have recently lost a lot of weight (size 26 to an 18) and my body is totally different. I have no idea what will look good on me now. Thank you. PJ
Congratulations on your improved health
I`ve also done them too ! I also want to take the opportunity to thank you for speaking calmy. So that those of us, who do not have English as our main goal, understand you perfectly. Like your videos a lot. Love from SWEDEN..
You are so welcome!
Great video😊❤
Oh, sweet Claire!! First of all, you look great . . . and so does your backdrop. I also skip notches sometimes. That practice usually ends up in disaster. I think you can pick any pattern you like now. Perhaps you can use several of your pdf patterns that suit you. Loved this video and did all the things. Bye for now, love.
Thank you sweet Lorraine! I was looking at a deer and doe shirt pattern I have but I’m still out of range! Hopefully not for too much longer!
I always have used the notches, even after almost 60 years of sewing! for shame for shame, ignoring the notches LOL cardinal sin, my friend JK--I also ignore the instructions about 80% of the time, it's true you just know after you've sewn for a while! The problem I have as I've gone up and down in weight over the years, is just go for a bigger size than I think I am and then alter it as I go. I'll usually have to take in the legs if they are pants, and the shoulders and bust if it's a top or since I like looser clothes sometimes I don't even bother taking in the top, I just wear it in a looser form. My problem area is always my stomach, so that's not the most flattering silhouette when you carry in the middle (not exactly pear shaped, more an apple!) Sometimes rather than buy a pattern or use a pattern, I'll use something I have that fits perfectly and make a pattern from that, and that has worked well for me. sorry so long winded!
Love the chair you’re sitting on.😊
Thank you! 😊 I love it too!
You look great!
Please do that shopping video to find your style ❤
Will do!!
You look really good and happy congratulations what was the first garment you made that fitted you well and you were happy to wear ? Take care
It was probably The Laundry Day Tee by Love Notions. I have a few videos on it.
You’re right about picking patterns that suit your body shape, especially when you are plus sized.Vogue patterns suggests on the envelope ( with symbols) that the pattern is for certain body types (ie., top heavy , triangular, round shape, etc ) .
But hey, you do you , no body shaming here!!
Love wherever you video! Will you be showing your new place? You’re looking good!!
If you follow my vlog channel you’ll see it in some videos
Love the fresh look of your new place! Are you going to be doing videos on your decorating process? To fool your brain, measure yourself in the opposite type of measurements, like if you are used to inches, use centimeters, and vice versa. My American brain can’t process centimeters, so I don’t get that cringy feeling when I measure myself, lol.
Great tip! Yes I think I will do decorating videos but on my vlog channel. I’ve changed the name to “50, fit and free!”
@daxxydog5777 what a great suggestion! Tricking the brain can help break that mindset on size as Claire described. 🙋♀️
👍❤️
You look tiny!! Your skin looks fab, your glowing ❤
Oh thank you!
Since the finished garment measurements aren't always available on the envelope, I pick a pattern size based on the measurements on the envelope and the garment is too big so I always have to size down.
That’s frustrating isn’t it
You are lovely.xx
I recently bought an expensive big name pattern just assuming size 14 was my size. I was dismayed to find out the measurements for their size 14 were not what I was used to. The pattern only went to size 14 and I could not return it! 😩Lesson learned.
Oh that’s a shame!
Don't use notches ... then you get to enjoy the experience of sewing sleeves on the wrong sides of the garment😂🤣😂😂😂🤣😂😂🤣🤣
