@Not Drunk James It is a threat to the modern game. Go in to trade chat right now and ask how many people are just playing while waiting for classic. In my experience the number of people that would answer yes to that is quite high.

Once you are the other side of letting go of your wow account it is a stark realization of how bad the the whole experience actually is too your well being.
'Wow killers' have mostly failed because they cannot match the 'investment' players put into their Wow accounts.
If classic Wow can pull players away from their modern Wow accounts, they will find it much easier to let go of classic later*
We'll see.
*That being said, if Blizzard pulled off a full rewind and long time players started the journey all over again, that would be quite spectacular, scary but nonetheless amazing.

I also don't believe for a minute that classic Wow couldn't or wouldn't change its model if they see data showing the playerbase moving to classic.
I'm looking forward to Classic pouring plenty of subscription money into WoW. All I care about is people paying their subscriptions so Blizzard can continue to develop WoW. Classic servers, WoW expansions, I don't care.

@ You would have to be a full on crack head if you think vanilla isn't any different outside of QOL changes, pretty sure you would need a scroll to list the differences... and a longer list to write down all the subs have dropped since those QOL changes :)
When I started vanilla I was shit, then I randomly met a druid who became my friend, she taught me how to tank and tested me by pulling extra mobs when I least expected to see how I coped with it. Still friends to this day, but one of the best things she taught me about foresight as a tank was if you needed to use taunt, you'd failed at tanking (unless it was a specific mechanic that needed you to taunt).
The idea being if I needed to use taunt I hadn't been paying attention or keeping myself prepared for the unexpected. I ended up being main tank for my guild and raided all the way to naxx 40, so I'm always grateful for her turning me from a shit tank into a good one who was able to help push the guild forward in raids. It felt great!
That druid was re-thornsing you, healing with quick rejuves, then popping back into kitty form.
That was what made feral so fun.

The true power of hybrids in Classic. They may get pigeonholed in endgame, but I tanked, healed, and dpsed my way through most content on private servers as a Shaman... all at once. You literally do EVERYTHING.

Mate I feel the same way. I was 15 when I got hooked back in classic and I am getting the same urges to play I did back then 15 years later. I am dying to get into the deadmines, wipe in gnomeregan and corpse run for 10 minutes, and kite drakki in ubrs.

classic WoW was made by real nerds. while the technocrat nerds of silicon valley were scheming their evil schemes, the uber nerds at blizzard crafted us the greatest game ever. it is going down in history as the next pong, mario, pacman, etc. Blizzard were FOOLs to change the original philosophy.
yeah but a lot has changed since then since 2006 a lot of BLizzard's core team working on WOW ( and Diablo) left Blizzard, Some of them formed Runic games and made League of Legends, etc.
Preach:
Horde Warrior. tanking, having fun, explaining the mindset of a classic wow tank, passes on loot.
Asmongoloid:
Alliance Warrior. tanking, telling everyone he's the fuckin best at tanking, disregards healing contribution, master loots everything.

Yea... you should mention that you clearly *aren't* watching Asmongold's entire streams...as he's lost the best gear numerous times to both Esfand and McConnell... and done so quite vocally (as he is known for doing).
As a fan of his channel from the very beginning I can also say how obvious it is that he is catering to a MUCH younger audience than his fellow streamers. Essentially playing a tongue-in-cheek style of game, to garner extra levels of enjoyment from players who haven't MASTERED the entire game 15 years ago, and who are interested in minutia other streamers are "above" sheerly by virtue of their streams age groups.
Asmongold has spoken time and time again that his average viewer is between 12-16yrs old... with only about 10-15% of his audience falling in the 20-30yrs age gap that WE represent.
Nice try on the virtue signally though... hope that works out.

The thing I missed the most about the old days is that chill dungeon group vibe. Nowdays every dungeon has to be rushed thanks to the m+ system and don't get me wrong that is fun too but imho I prefer the old playstile so much more.
Even in Vanilla you could Faceroll Dungeons. All you need is a Fury-Warrior Tank or Amrs-Warrior tank and faceroll the Content with an Shamane for Windfury. But if you can do that that means you got at least AQ Gear and at this Point you just wanna show of your gear :D
Dungeons were an adventure, now they are a moba. I hate m+ and cant wait to do these dungeons again.

@@_TG No shouldn't be those are different MMO-Aspekts. If you keep Facerolling its more a Hack'n Slash gameplay and has nothing to do with an MMO. All you do is just spaming the Buttons. Classic needs a little bit more of Strategies becasue Tanking is not as easy as it is and seems. Enemy can Dodge and Parry attacks which degreeses your Threat and some Hyper-DPS like Mages can only go Single-Target and not AoE everything down in seconds. Vanilla Dungeons are way different and way different design compared to M+ and it started by Low HP Mobs pulling different Mobs and Enemy who can fear you can fear you into different Mobs. Besides that M+ is pure Cancer and shouldn't be in a MMO besides it gives Flasks only or enchants but no gear. Gear should be only available if you raid. No time for raiding? Sucks for you
These mobs are 6 levels lower than you or more, shouldn't be a struggle.

I've been watching you for a couple of years now mate, and the way you are about this video is 100% different than the others (for years!). Great video, great tanking! It's nice to see another tank who thinks and tanks exactly the same as I do (or at least did in Vanilla WoW) These days it's too easy. I actually stopped playing WoW after reaching max level in BFA as the game lost it's personality. I played Wow at launch and no game has ever come close to the feeling I had while running around in Coldridge Valley and Kharanos on my Dwarf Warrior, finally progressing to Loch Modan and seeing another player riding on the back of a Ram mount which blew my mind. I cannot wait for this game. I will keep watching your videos with great interest. Thank you
This guy is the embodiment of a great tank. Observing everything even if you don't need to, ultimately becoming a great leader aswell. That's why main tanks were very often the raidleaders back then and also my raidleader. Been watching you since early cata, you didn't loose your stride at all sir. Big respect.

As someone with no interest in trying Classic myself, I'm really interested in hearing your views of Classic after level 30. Most notably, do you think this enjoyment would continue long term?
As you've said before, the core gameplay itself is not particularly good, but you seem to have found your joy in the older style of tanking specifically. Do you think that will be enough to carry you through some of the more tedious aspects of the game? Do you think you would be enjoying yourself in any other role where you don't have that factor of tank management to keep the combat more involved for you?
Most content creators that are hyping up Classic at the moment don't seem to really have a good explanation for their fondness of it, it generally comes off as just enjoying experiencing the game in such a different way, but I feel your perspective could have a lot more insight into what is actually enjoyable about it.

I think it stays enjoyable because the leveling experience from 30 to 45 is great and its when you get deep enough in your talent trees to feel specialized and you start unlocking strong abilities.
I have been watching a lot of videos and twitch stream archives (uploaded on youtube of course) showcasing the WoW Classic beta, and I have to say, watching Preach enjoy old school tanking is far and away my favorite thing so far. I was unsure as to whether I would play Classic, as I have not had any interest in WoW for years, but seeing Preach tank has really put me back into the WoW mood.
@Preach Gaming Shield slam actually does a huge amount of threat in an attack, it's just usually not worth using it until you have a pretty good block value. But far as I can tell, with more recent math and understanding of how threat and such works, deep prot is the way to go as a full time tank, with some in arms and fury.
Also, Battle Shout generates threat on enemies for each party member buffed by it, so weaving it into your rotation in groups of mobs is a good habit to get into.

One hundred percent agree on the tanking minigame and "keeping things moving". Watching your threat on each mob, evaluating the next pack, marking CC targets if necessary, checking your healer's mana to see if you can continue chaining or need to take a break (which you can only do after monitoring them for the first 10 minutes to see how efficiently they use their mana in the first place). The hyper-awareness of so many moving parts allows a TRULY talented tank will single handedly craft a satisfying dungeon experience front to back, and is one of my favorite parts of the game to play as well.
P.S. Nice to see you picked up the Wing Blade. You not being on the Leaders of the Fang quest in WC made me cry XD
It is SO good to see this, the fact that he haven't given BfA one inch of a thought because he is entertained with and OLDER version of the game HAS to tell Blizz something, and as Ion said in one of the recent interviews "There is definitely some lessons to be learned" which is good to hear, and I am soo into these video's where Preach teach's HOW to do it almost deep diving, cus I have also wanted to tank in Classic but always been scared to do so, Thank you @Preach Gaming

Well explained Mike, i haven't heard anyone else nail it quite like this. explaining just how far the game has gotten from the original game we all loved, patch by patch, xpac by xpac it has slowly inched further and further from what we had.

Man Preach, this is the video I needed today. Working my Sunday shift, all I kept thinking about was whether or not I wanted to roll myself a warrior in Classic. Seeing these pulls sold me on going prot again. Thanks mate.
Preach, specializing in Axes is actually super strong in leveling. The level 30 warrior class quest gives you the Whirlwind Axe, which is a super powerful weapon that is BiS for the next 10 levels. Then you have the axe from SM Armory and Kang the Decapitator from Zul'Farrak which lasts you until 60. So going axes is actually super worth. The best leveling 2h weapons are axes.
I was already excited to tank in classic again. You just got me SO pumped. It's been forever since I've spun plates like that. This video basically retaught me to do it and gave me extra tips.

Your description of the way that you prioritize the mobs you are tanking is exactly why I loved it back in the day, before everyone had an AOE threat spammer. Having to actually think about how to use your resource to most effectively maintain your threat was an amazing game to play.

Loving the classic content Preach and you made me switch what I was going to roll from a warlock (my original vanillas character) to a Tauren Warrior. I didn't discover my love for warrior tanking until late vanilla and it just doesn't have the same joy in retail as it did then, tanking doesnt give me that rewarding feeling. I'd even say it seems more mindless than DPS. Can't wait to play classic. I still feel like Demo shout and BS spam for some easy AOE threat should be used in your rotations more but you handle yourself well as a vanilla tank. Hope to see way more Vanilla content in the future.

My hope is the popularity of Classic cause Blizz to A try and bring some of that old school mmo feel to live and B goves them extra time to work on the next Xpac. I think one of the main reasons Recent expansions launch with less and less to do is due to the major time constraints put on the team by the community.
Agreed. I think thats why they keep titanforge and absurd RNG in game, its an artificial way to extend the few content these expansions have. Even mythic plus is artificial as fk, oh you will fight the same enemies, get the same items, but with all numbers increased, so original

Tanking was my favorite role during Vanilla and BC. If you knew your class, you were a beast. No matter which tank class you chose. I bounced evenly between WAR and PLD. So good.

As an early bc player after banning myself from vanilla I am so happy to see the start of this again. I love the lore of the game. Always feel most happy in Azeroth questing. Been a high end raider through bc, wraith and cata. Played each xpac to some degree but finally relieved to be back to the roots of what this game is about. Character growth and reward for hard work is what this game is about. To me the new xpac's feel more and more like a mobile app to make a quick buck. If they bring TBC back looking forward to doing the keymaster achievement again and gaining the tabard as the portal is open. Happy days

This, this is why I loved tanking back in TBC. As paladin would cycle through each mob make sure they had a stack of Seal of Truth debuff, then I had number of different ways to regain aggro, BoP, Avenger shield, Hoj, taunt, god that was so much more fun then today's "run in hit 1 button and it deals aoe damage wooooo... "
I miss it so much, been tanking on my paladin from vanilla until now and BC and Wotlk were great times to be a tankadin.
I was a tank (dungeon/raid) pretty much all vanilla and tbc and loved it. I quit at the end of tbc just from burn out of basically feeling like I was being forced to login all the time 'for the good of the guild'. When I came back (just before mop) I just couldn't get the same feeling back. At the time I thought it was the fear of being forced to be on all the time but I'm beginning to realise it was more that it was just more fun back in the day. Sure the classes were crap and you pretty much just hit 2-3 buttons but having to think about aggro, target swapping etc.. just added a skill to the game that appealed to me. Used to love getting complimented on my threat holding, survivability, etc.. dammit! Wasn't interested in classic but these vids are getting the old nostalgia juices flowing

What I quite liked about classic to bc and even lich king wow was the personality the classes, and roles had, which gave you alot of replayability between classes an roles. Aggro management, threat management, and dungeon knowledge was quite important to learn. Like the old rule of not attacking a target full on till the tank had five sunders on it, some could do it that had either a good control of thier threat or abilities to deal with threat, but also knowing so many ways of pulling groups to make it easier to defeat them an group them up.
Like when I switched to a paladin tank in BC i would use line of sight so much in shadow halls , which also having so many undead an demons made it that I could use my holy long range attack nice for pulling groups instead of using my shield or face pullig them.
I know preach said he didn't give a shit about dps, but I do wanna point out that he was never the lowest on his meter. Just watching an old school good tank display his mastery of the art is so awesome to watch.

Dude, "Deep Prot" is the shit. I used to do it all the time, not only do you make yourself basically invulnerable, you're also a stun machine. When you're almost at 50% chance to stun on EVERY REVENGE? You are constantly stunning targets. Also, the rage generation with level 5 Shield specialization is sick because it's every time you block. Shield slam does a shitload of damage, because everyone misses the part about "Modified by your shield block value". So you're a blocking/threat/stun machine that's basically invulnerable. Takes a ton of heat off the healers.

I so miss tanking classic style. It was so fullfilling. I ran with my own group so we were constantly moving. I can't wait to get back into classic. What's great is all of my friends are joining back together for classic so we'll level together.

Nah, Warriors in Retail still have most of these abilities, they simply have no real need to use them outside PvP
and they only use 1 button in classic.

Good observation. Yeah, in old school wow getting a 1.8 speed sword or thereabouts is a big deal for tanking. You don't want some 2.6 speed mace, as it'll inhibit your rage generation from auto attacks. Every little bit counts. source: prot war in vanilla; haven't tanked since lol.
Taunt is a failure, I love that quote! That is exactly how I view tanking as well in classic! (Which is why I am going to be a pally tank) because of the tank is doing his job correctly, taunt is merely a worst case scenario spell.

Preach makes tanking look super easy and always gets me excited to tank... then I find out the hard way that it’s like running into a brick wall while riding a bicycle with no helmet. Hoping I can get the hang of it in classic because it looks super fun!

Classic and Bc tanking was such a blast. I can still remember a run I had in Uldaman back then and how good it felt managing aggro on so many different targets. If you did a good job you also got complimented way more back then seeing as the difference between a bad and a decent tank was very noticeable.

I didn't really care for tanking as a warrior until BC hit... but it was absolutely legendary feeling in that expansion. I do agree that lich king was the true beginning of the tank killing crusade blizzard had embarked upon; there was no longer any thought required.
Man.. I love vanilla and am likely going to play classic, but I am really only doing so in hopes of TBC happening, where skill between players actually gave you a reputation on your server. That just didn't happen much in vanilla.
Preach: An example of a good tank who didnt need the Omen Threat Meter.
What do I most remember about Vanilla? *Hearing* that quests were not efficient XP for leveling and grinding mobs to my first 60 after 7 months.
SeeDubEE you may have heard that from a mage aoe grinding. Even then it’s only more efficient at certain levels in very specific spots.
Grinding is indeed faster (and I'm not including aoe grinding). If it took you 7 months to get to 60 (grinding or questing) then you weren't playing very much.

At the end of my crusade against the crusaders I tanked with my whirlwind axe and it was glorious. Armed with SM gear at lvl 39 (divinity gauntlets, herod's shoulders/helmet, scarlet chestpiece/legs/shield, sword of omen) and some other nice things from other dungeons made my warrior feel like the king of the world (even though plate was just around the corner haha).
yes you can get good pace but you are killing 19 elites at 27 :)
Didnt think Preach would like classic so much but you can tell how enthused he is while he is doing this. I made my character on the stress test got level 5 and started killing boars and leveling profs just cuz it was more fun than playing any of my 410+ BFA toons

I used to tank 10 man strat UD runs all day long in classic. This was the pinnacle of mmo gaming for me. Nothing else comes close!
I love seeing the Classic content, especially the tanking videos. I also loved tanking in Vanilla, and was sad to see the tanking game go to shit as the expansions rolled on. I was given more and more tools, but what I did with them mattered less and less, and it boggled my mind that I had more fun overcoming greater challenges in the old Sunder Spam days.
I almost want to stop watching these just to preserve the magic of doing the later dungeons for the first time again

Im sure the other group members can step up a bit if you’re still learning, instead of just expecting you to cover all their slack.
I’m joking of course. Learning will be stressful. But you’ll be fine in the end I’m sure 😊.
Dont worry about it! Its different than retail but not really harder, you just have to keep track of different things (like Preach said, what enemies have you hit how many times, did they dodge/parry, rage management, ...). You learn that stuff quite fast in low level dungeons where its not a wipe if a mob hits a clothy 2-3 times.
If you want an easier time (and also min-max a little bit), go for engineering - those bombs really help! Keep it up and enjoy your time!

Practice makes perfect :) I'm used to healing in BfA, never got to do it in Vanilla, so I look forward to see how it compares. With a semi patient group it should be okay (I hope)
