    Hi folks - Literally went into hiding for the first 12 hours this video was up but I just want to say Thanks for all the kind words and positivity and stuff. I'm really glad that people seem to have enjoyed this. I will begin building the next series - Beyond the Dark Portal, episodically, over on my channel fairly soon. It's a big book so it's gonna take a while but I'll get it done eventually and then we can do this again. If Hiru's ok with that, obviously!

    Man i really watched the whole 3 hours and loved it. It really got me thinking why Warcraft Storytelling was so topnotch back then and seems to struggle coming Cataclysm and forth. Is it bc of Metzen stepping down? Or bc too much High Fantasy taking over while they fail to find a middle ground between keeping mysteries vague without reaping deep plotholes.

    • @sucraloss
      @sucraloss 2 года назад +4

      Metzen is a master world-builder, really one of a kind - he puts so much detail in the politics of the worlds he builds, an often overlooked detail. I know that he had struggled with mental health at certain points during World of Warcraft, especially later on. Maybe they had a lot of pressure from executives and deadlines that took away from the storytelling. An MMORPG is also a little difficult medium to tell a story like WC2 and 3.
      I would imagine, though I have no proof, that Metzen and some other senior storytellers had ideas that just weren't feasible in the game and had to make choices that didn't make that much sense. Or they couldn't explain well enough the motivations of major lore characters with the contraints of WoW.
      I will say there are still good lore moments in WoW, especially the full Wrathion story from Cataclysm and beyond. It's not perfect, but it is a legitimately captivating story.

    • @Freestyle80
      @Freestyle80 Год назад

      you know it doesnt always have to be 'old things are great new ones all suck' many things about the new story yeah its bad but you think EVERY SINGLE PART is bad? There's still many great stories being told, maybe not in shadowlands but in BFA, Jaina's story was pretty cool, Drustvar had an amazing story. In Legion the whole storyline was universally praised.

      But Onyxia and Nefarian were really more of a "Stormwind's problem". Ahn Qiraj was the first time we saw a big threat, and it was played up and done rather well enough.
      Naxxramas didn't seem like a world wide threat either. Just a Lordaeron threat, an amorphous threat of the scourge getting stronger.
      All the zones had their self contained stories.

      The cosmic side isn't rubbish though. TBC and Legion are cosmic and they were good. People actually enjoyed Shadowlands on release. People loved Denathrius, Winter Queen resurrecting Ysera, etc. Go check their cinematics. The reactions are positive. It is only the horrid Sylvanas and Jailer story and lack of content that ruins the expansion at the end.

    • @crash_hunter8659

      You can have both. You need just good characters with failures and limited knowledge. Let them interact with each other and the cosmic shit. And than scale the player characters back to hire a hero, not the fuking champions of the world handling artifacts like they are sold in a tourist shop.
      I think the storytellers at blizz have forgotten to let their characters interact with the world. It’s feels more like the characters and stories are there for a „bigger“ tell? I can’t put it in words. And they got obsessed with the cliffhangers.
      Let’s hope they get it back with dragonflight. Old lore to explore.

    • @drinks1550
      @drinks1550 2 года назад

      @@vulkenite5476 "cosmic" in his sense refers to the greater forces of void, light, death, etc all at war with their own turmoil and imbalances. Before, sargeras and his legion were one entity in the greater plot of azeroth's warcraft. TBC wasn't cosmic, it was the homeland of the orcs which we saw twisted by kil'jaeden's legion and illidan's forces. I think the story truly went downhill once we started fucking with timetravel in WoD

    Haven't watched yet but I'm so excited for a 3 hour video on warcraft 2 lore. The novels are absolutely critical for warcraft lore and I have always said they need to base the next movie/tv series on these novels and not the games themselves

    I want an entire WoW expansion that just goes fully back in time to the second war and basically replay/tell the story of Warcraft 2 Tides of Darkness and beyond the dark portal. Make it dark and very mature much like the lore was back then. It would be awesome.

    People love the 3rd War because it shows the true beginning of WoW's Horde.
    But I just realized the 2nd War is the start of the Alliance. Felt so proud with the dwarves and humans always helping each other

    This is so awesome. I started playing Warcraft back in ~’04, playing the WC3 at a friend’s house over the summer. Got into WoW in ~’07, late TBC if I recall. I’ve read about bits of Warcraft history, but learned so much here - never new Kel’Thuzad had been a member of the Kirin Tor, for example.
