I just got myself a baby angraecum sesquipedale after my other two orchids (bulbophyllum fletcherianum and pleurothallis gargantua) did not die in my care 😅. I find orchids very similar to anthuriums for which I cared so far quiet well, so let's hope for the best, because I'm starting to prefer orchids over any other plants. Thank you for your videos they are a great help!
Angraecum Sesquipidale was my first "serious" orchid. Mine also has two plants growing side by side. I'm quite fond of it and hope it does well. He keeps shooting out new leaves and I tell him how much I love him. :) He is a treasure. Lol
Good to hear from you. Unfortunately I lost (water in a leaf axil during cool weather) the one that I hoped had recovered so I only have one left. It didn't flower this year but is growing well. Lots of buds on my Angraecum viguieri though!
Really enjoyed the videos you’ve posted so far. I’m going to be keeping an eye out for some more Angraecums! Hope to see more videos from you in future! Jon :-)
Recently the main sources have been Spicesotic Plants, Writhlington School Orchid Project, Orchid Shows, friends and our local Cambridge Orchid Society. It is always worth joining a local orchid society if there is one near where you live because members often have spare plants. Before we left the EU I purchased plants from European Nurseries such as Akerne and Großräschener Orchideen
Howard, you have such beautiful specimens. I love your selection of plants too. Can you tell me how long you try growing an orchid in your environment before giving up on it if it does not thrive?
I try to choose only orchids that I think will be suited to my conditions and this generaly works out but some I struggle with. The answer to your question is several years. If a plant isn't doing well I reasearch where it grows in the wild and try to find out how other people are growing it. Then I might try a different growing medium, I might try mounting it or moving it to give it more or less light etc. But you have to be very patient as orchids can take a long time to settle down and show you whether you've done the right thing so it can be a very lengthy and frustrating business. I hate giving up on an orchid. Sometimes I succeed, occasionally I admit defeat. One invaluable source of information I often turn to first is wsbeorchids.org.
the 3rd plant,.....do you think it could be grown in a clay pot with lava rock ? I'm having very good luck growing that way and looking for some new plants to try.
It's always a good strategy to try new plants using a growing method that you already know works well in your conditions. I don't see why the Angraecum sesquipedale shouldn't do well. They have few very thick roots that like to almost dry out between waterings. You can easily alter the frequency of watering to achieve this. I would use lava rock for more of my orchids but it is very heavy for those I need to have hung up on wires near the light.
I really enjoy your videos and have massive greenhouse envy of your space!....I'm wondering about the angreacum viguieri, what temps do you grow yours at, summer vs. winter? I have a young plant that has done almost nothing for the last 9 months! Also, there's seems to be confusing guidance about how much light to give these, with some guides referring to full sun.
Hi Jason, Mine is hanging up and gets good light but never sun. I have 50% shade blinds pulled down if sunny. Temperature is up to low 30's deg C in hot weather and down to about 14 deg C when it's cold. It flowers in early spring and then grows just in the warmer summer weather. Mine is now very tall and I have had to attach it to a tree branch for support. With a few flexible ties and a little sphagnum moss here and there it is gradually rooting itself to the branch. I have the same issue with Angraecum erectum.
Isn’t Angraecum the genus that was named by Indonesian/Malay word for orchid "Anggrek"? This orchid looks like a lily. I was told Orchids were classified in Liliaceae. I watched an old botanist calling it a part of Liliaceae and thought he might missed the memo 😅
Awww that's too bad angraecum germinyanum has no scent given it wants to have a bloom going so often. That's too bad, someone ought to cross it with a highly fragrant one that blooms at least several times a year, maybe angraecum didieri which would also make it more compact. As much as it is nice to have orchids that put out big shows, it's nice having a plant always in bloom you can always go to for a smell haha. Wish there were more. My Mitriostigma axillare so far hasn't let me down in that regard.
Basically I use Rainmix as per instructions and use this once a week in summer and less often in winter. But it would be worth watching episode 36 where I go into more detail about routine tasks.
i ve begun recently watching your videos mr Howard and i really enjoy them. i am learning a lot and i am inspired too

@@richpeltz2044Would you like to let us know how your plantings are going in clay and volcanic rock?

@@HowardRice thanks! I've been growing mine a bit cooler so I'll try to find a warmer spot and see how it gets on 👍
