Music by Nigel Saunders.
First you bonsai trees and now you bonsai moss. What an original idea. I think it looks really good and it could be a show stopper for doing this to a tree for a bonsai show. The grit - gravel in the right corner is outstanding. Really looking forward to a update when this larch explodes into its green phase. Thanks Nigel
Thank you Bob, I'll be sure to show the trees in spring!
Nigel this group just gets better and better, the landscaping helps the trees feel more majestic without detracting from them - beautiful! xx
Thank you, I gave it a good watering after with cold ice water and then put it back into the basement. Hopefully it will stay dormant for another month!
I love this Larch forest group of trees with the steps and underplanting makes it look very natural .
The final look at you bonsai forest looked like you were fly a drone In a real life forest, amazing art Nigel.
Thanks Michael, I'll try to get some really good shots of the forest in spring, I'll see if I can get that drone look to it!
After watching I feel like a gnome walking among the Larches. The gravel makes it to another level.
Thank you Mike, I'll be adding a few more details in the next video also!
That these trees have developed such strong character allows you to augment them with an imaginative and detailed landscaping that only serves to enhance and complete their forest-world.
Thank you, I hope they look very Larch like when the needles come out in spring!
It needs just a little squirrel 🐿 to be perfect 👌.You are a perfectionist. I like that. It was really interesting to follow your thoughts. Thank you Nigel
Thank you Bettina, I'll be adding more details in future!
Nigel Saunders, The Bonsai Zone
👍😊 Perfekt Nigel
Thanks
Nigel... I like the coniferous look on the moss...a lot!!! I like the pea gravel too!! Looks very realistic too!!!!
Thank you Mary, I like the little stream bed too!
A dreamlike design. Thank you also for explaining and showing everything in such detail. If you want to learn something and are looking for inspiration, you've come to the right place.
Thank you, I'll have to tackle the Cedar forest also!
Love your bonsai archaeology🤠
I didn't find any buried treasure, but I did find some good rocks!
I didn't find any buried treasure, but I did find some good rocks!
in a word, simply outstanding Nigel !
Thank you Jonathan, spring felt close for a while there, but a good winter storm soon changed that feeling!
This is one of those forests that you would want to walk in for hours
Watch out for bears!
Nice forest keep up the good work!
Thank you!
Awesome work Nigel 👍 love this Forest
Thank you Adrian, I sure got a lot of use out of the turntable this weekend, it was so helpful and it really helped me shape the forest! I have a thin wedge of wood that I insert between the bottom plate and the top one that locks the turntable in place! It works really well and is so simple!
Hi Nigel, forgot to send you a little rubber wedge that I use also. People even use a door wedge and I’ve seen some use a clothes peg haha
Regards
Adrian

Oh my goodness. That landscape in this forest looks absolutely fantastic! Inspirational!
I'm liking the changes, but I'm sure I'll still be adding lots of small details! More to come!
Magnifique ! on se prend à rêver dans cette fabuleuse forêt, mais prenons garde, un ours brun pourrait bien surgir derrière la colline...
Je ferai attention à ces petits ours!
Beautiful work. One of my favorite forests 👍🥰
Thank you Lan Ng, I can't wait for spring when the needles are coming out!
That larch planting is looking really good. Great video! Thank you
Thank you Chris, now I've just got to wait for spring!
I've always loved this larch forest and now the landscape is really getting there too! I like the new look off the moss bushes, fits nicely to the whole composition. Thanks for the update on this one, can't wait for the spring prune 😊
Thank you Alja, me too!
👌The very first look at this gives u the feeling of a forest, all those stones in d landscape are adding to the beauty , very well done
Thank you Mangesh, I just need a few miniature birds singing in the trees!
Liking the rapid fire video Nigel. Every time I take a "work break" there is a new video to watch :) I know it can't always be like that but it's nice. This is also my favorite scape of yours.
Thank you Keith, it was a fun weekend of working outside!
That's a really good impression of Sam! lol
Sam's a good guy, I hope to meet him some day!
I like what you have done over the last few days! As you were doing the moss, I was thinking about it more like a cedar and the one in the center is still too round. I totally understand why you don't want to take too much off, but, the way it is my eye keeps being drawn to it. I'm glad you couldn't find the white sand, you don't need it. I was cheering when you put the pea gravel on. It is perfect! Denise
Thank you Denise, it would be just a subtle touch of white sand, It could easily be over done! I'll work on my conical bushes, they may be a little too big also. I'll play around with the balance of them with the composition for the future!
After long stressful days at work, I love to watch your videos. Something calming / relaxing about them. My side hobby is working on my Garden, Front and back yard plants. That new turn table you got is great ! Have a good one and I look forward to your next video.
Thank you Ryan, maybe you can get some little trees for the garden! Have fun!
just beautiful work ,great
Thank you Elisabeth, it will be nice to see it in spring!
This has to be one of my favorites in your collection. Love all the refinement that you did to it in this video. Well done!!
Thank you Pat!
Lovely job Nigel!
Thank you Thomas!
awesome video
Thank you!
Love this Forrest Nigel. You really are an artist that's for sure. The work you put into the landscaping is inspiring. Also Ha ha I had a good laugh at th Aussie Bonsai Bloke impression 😂😂Not bad mate 😁.
Thanks Sam, I sure liked the new turntable, it was so nice to be able to just spin that forest around! We just had a good snow storm last night, there is not much going on in the city today, everyone is shoveling!
@@TheBonsaiZone long winters there for sure. Hope it warms up soon mate 😁😁 love your channel 😁
I like your hair !
I think you are one of the few! Thanks!
@@TheBonsaiZone It is very unique! :)
Looks Great Nigel
Thank you!
amazing!! very good for meditating being present just looking at it!!!
Thanks Vinh Jean!
I love this forest
Thank you, hoping to get it looking really good for spring!
good morning Nigel and congratulations on the beautiful forest, I notice that just like me, you also do not follow the rule of odd numbers for woodland and forest trees ... I am also like that, I don’t count, I just plant and if it was good with a even number, so it will be ...
big hug
This forest is interesting because it has two groups of odd numbered trees, the total number of trees is even, but the forest looks right with two odd groups! I think this is a learned aesthetic that comes from being surrounded by this artistic rule from birth. 3 is no more valid than 2 or 4. Maybe in a different culture in a different time, odd numbers would be considered, well, odd!
That is one of my favorite plantings of yours... I love it,
I have to work on trees today myself.
Thanks and have fun today Todd, it looks like we are getting sunny day number three in a row here!
It looks beautiful Nigel. Great job!
Thank you Maciej!
I can't wait to start a forest like this! But man, those bigs pots are so expensive! I'll fork over the money eventually lol
The Larch forest is planted in a mica pot, they are less expensive than a clay pot, but still they aren't cheap!
www.herons.co.uk/Mica-Bonsai-Pot-Shallow-Oval-71cm
I love this planting. Maybe you can print off a small bridge over your stream bed.
I thought of that, to continue the path way! maybe a stone slab bridge? I'll play around with it! I may try some fallen trees too.
Looks like a real forest with many characteristics of places I've hiked in. Would you be opposed to replacing the larger moss bushes with something that grew its own roots? Like a young dwarf Hinoki Cypress. Seems like the landscape needs another texture, maybe your new experiments with the moss bushes will add that, without the added roots...
Thanks Tag, I'll play around with other features in the forest and think a lot about the moss trees or bushes!
A beautiful series Nigel. Congrats on the result!
Greets
Kennet
Thank you Kennet, it continues to evolve! We just had a big snow storm here last night, no spring in sight!
@@TheBonsaiZone
Same here... I thought spring was in the air but...
In general it looks very good, but I'm finding that the four "shrubs" in the back look a bit artificial. They all seem to have the same general shape, they are evenly spaced, and the three on the right are in almost perfect sequence by height. Shortening the second from the right and perhaps making it a more clearly different shape would dispel the illusion.
Thanks Kevin, I'll work on them! Great suggestions!
Thanks so much.
You do beautiful work... love your larch forest .dj
Thank you, It was so nice working on the forest, it felt like summer in the greenhouse, the hours just melted away!
Much treats!
Thank you Mara!
Looks nice!
Thank you, I can't wait for spring!
@@TheBonsaiZone Same here but meanwhile I am enjoying late winter...
Got my black pepper vine yesterday. U need to get one right away it grows fast what I found out..think it be perfect for u to train into a tree form
Awesome Chris, sounds like a good species!
Great forest. The way you styled the moss so nicely, you'd probably be a good hair stylist too :)
Thanks Lukas, more to come as spring approaches!
You might want to have the path through the stone steps to continue over the dried riverbed. Maybe there's a rotting log across the riverbed giving access to the other side. Also there might be little twigs here and there around the river banks.
Loved the video. :) Keep it up.
Thanks, great suggestions, I'll keep at it!
this is incredible! but I just realised won't you have to destroy this the next time you need to repot? all that work! 😲
I can all be put back together again, just like Humpty Dumpty! I may not separate all the trees with the next re potting, instead re pot as one big root system.
hello Nigel your video is very indulging, thinking of doing something like this ,thanks
It's very enjoyable creating and growing a forest, you'll have fun!
Absolutely stunning! Loved this forest before and now even more. Though,.....as I was walking around and laying about I noticed I forgot my book......so if you ever find a spare one, could you leave it behind for me please? 😊 I have a (I think) 2 year old Larch Decidua stick I bought last year and no idea how to go about it next but, I do think some sort of a story with the tree is a nice idea, thanks for that! First need to cut some branches off here and there because grow she did lol Now it's my turn to help out a bit.....back to the books and google searches. See you in the next one Nigel 💖😊👍💖
I think the fairies took your book and kept it safe from the weather. I'm sure it will be in the same spot when you are walking through on the next sunny day.
Totally not related to the video, but I’m trying to find a good indoor bonsai. I have some Crasula Ovata and Portulacaria Afra trees, and a bunch of cuttings, but I want something different. It will live inside on a shelf with grow lights 12 hours a day, to supplement the natural light of the room. Do you have a suggestion or two?
I love the Serissa, but I have read they’re best outside.
I would try a dwarf Schefflera or almost any species of Ficus, they should do well indoors!
Hello Nigel. I remember you said the new pot for the larch forest was a mica pot. I was curious if this was the ovb 25 or 30? I can’t seem to find them anywhere local or online
Heron's sells them in England....
www.herons.co.uk/Mica-Bonsai-Pot-Shallow-Oval-71cm
I measured the pot and it is the 27" or 71 cm as sold by Herons. They are very hard to get here, I try and buy every one when I see them for sale used.
Nice work,
and your hair is well made for the occasion :)
it looks like your trees (just joking :) ) i like it
Crazy hair indeed!
nice content
Glad you enjoyed the video!
I love this forest have you ever thought of putting it on a Slab
I do like slabs until you have to lift them! It is in a large mica pot right now and I really like it for it's durability and light weight.
Nigel Saunders, The Bonsai Zone that’s true as I have and is so Heavy
Love your Larch.... unfortunately mine has a LOOOOOOOOONG way to go
It always fun watching them improve a bit each year!
hey Nigel, I was just wondering if you have ever tried and had success with larch cuttings. I know this might be a stupid question but where I live, I have only found one larch tree within probably 50 miles from my house and it doesn't seem to have any seeds in the cones and I would love to have a larch.
I have tried Larch cuttings and haven't had any success. I have kept the cuttings green all summer, but after they loose their needles in fall, none have come back to life in spring. I don't know of anyone who has had success with cuttings or air layers. Still, it may be possible?
@@TheBonsaiZone Okay, thanks for answering me. I will have to find another way to start one.
Hi, I've just started to scratch the surface of Bonsai and your videos are truly invaluable as I begin to learn the art. I do have a beginner question.....Is it advisable to start a forest project by planting young seedling growths that are about 6-12 inches in height? I'm specifically looking to start a Japanese Larch forest and have ordered a pack of 10 saplings. I'm not sure if it's best to grow them in separate pots or if I can put them into a 'forest' setting at such a young 'age'. Thanks for any guidance and thank you for the superb videos.
There is no easy answer for this question! If you grow the trees in the forest together from young, the trees grow in a natural pattern like they would do in a full size forest. They grow branches where there is light and they are always competing with each other for resources. You will get a very natural forest with this method, however, they trees will have to be separated and root pruned to get a good radial root base under way. Seedlings have a tenancy to grow very one sided or strange looking root systems. Trees in a forest planting are also harder to maintain and prune.
It may be best to develop the trees in individual pots at first and then plan your forest when they are a bit more mature. You may have to do a lot of pruning to get them to fit together naturally, both the roots and the branches and many might die on the interior or the forest from lack of light as the planting sorts itself out.
Either way works and I think the success comes from a good eye and technique!
@@TheBonsaiZone Thanks so much for the detailed guidance. I'm excited to see how the forest comes together and thanks again for being a fantastic resource!
Thank you for another set of fantastic videos! The turn table looks really nice.
I hope you don't take offence, but...
I think the tallest larch looks a bit out of scale. There is inverse taper at the very top which makes it look wierd in a way. If the planting was mine, I think I would have cut it off 85% of the way up, where the one branch goes to the right, and divides into two. The same with the middle larch. If you cut these two trees down, I think you still would keep your triangular shape.
No mistake - this is a beautiful planting.
I am planting larch seeds myself this spring=D
Thanks, great suggestions! I'll take a look at all the possibilities when I go to prune the trees!
Hi Nigel! Could you write down the name of the mix of the diferent soils you use for you bonsai? is for translate it on spanilsh, i have most of them put not all. Thank you!
I just use one soil mix, 1/2 perlite and 1/2 turface. If I have composted pine bark, I'll add about 10 percent to the mix, but usually my soil doesn't have the bark as it is hard to get here in the right size.
Turface is 100 percent Fullers earth.
Love your Landscaping and your trees look great! I do have one suggestion. Your little conifers would look a little more realistic if you made the tips a little more pointy. Other than that everything looked fantastic.
Thanks Mr. Leslie! I'll work on them some more, if they still look a little funny, I may reduce them in height so they are less noticeable.
How wide is the pot in length Nigel ?
I pruned my beech and lost the top, now long years await me to get a proper leader. Darn. Ever evolving, never finished.
Very true, and when you do get your tree just perfect, it grows and changes everything again!
Do I dare question the master?
Why not just plant some conifer saplings instead of fussing with moss? Seems a more reasonable long term solution. Thanks
I could plant little bushes, but they would eventually grow too large and would constantly need to be replaced, even with good pruning. I am hoping to get some more smaller Larch trees in the forest eventually.
Looking forward to seeing the evolution of my favorite landscape. Thanks
This creation is starting to feel like ours too, isn't it ? ^^
It's come far in the years the Bonsai Zone has been on RUclips! When I look back to the simple flat forest it was, you can see the progress!
Could you try growing an albizia julibrisson I have one but I have no idea of how to prune it because of the way it grows
I have a seedling, but I haven't pruned it yet, here is a good video on this species....
ruclips.net/video/gKua_W1kgfI/видео.html
I love your work!
(You might want som more irregularity in the silhouette of the highest “bush”, though.)
Thanks, I'll make some decisions when I go to prune it in spring!
Yep, it's a bit hinky.
Love all the stones, but find the funky shape of the largest moss bush in the back very distracting.
Thanks, I'll try and sort it all out as everything starts to grow!
Nice forest as well as melody on the music, Nigel!
(Btw, are you in touch with mikbonsai? I noticed his comments are turned off.... is he okay?)
When I last contacted him, he said he was taking some time off for health reasons, I hope he's OK, I'm worried the comments are turned off, I tried contacting some people in the UK, but no word yet.
hi nigel do you have any atlas cedar ???????????
I don't, but they are a really good tree for bonsai! I'll keep my eyes open for one!
*Nigel's hair needs pruning too...* 😜😂😂
Very true, it's getting a bit of lichen on it also, or maybe that's just grey hair!
I miss the green wild moss 🥺
It will grow back wild again and give a more natural feel to the planting as it fills in and greens up!
hello Nigel,
are You play Cello? beautiful
I play the violin, but not well! The music is composed using a free software called MuseScore. It's not the best composing software, but it's free!
