- I finish pruning up the trees in the Larch (Larix laricina) bonsai forest. It's quite a severe pruning, but I hope it keeps them from thickening too much towards the top of the trees.

I love the look of this forest when it is bare of it's leaves!!! The fact that this forest looks so good and is so realistic is a testament to the success of clip and grow and to your incredible skill in working on bonsai trees. I find that wired trees look too artificial and less as nature would have grown a tree. I much prefer the way you treat this as a hobby rather than a business, too. It makes me feel like you are more "real" and honest, if that makes sense... Sending lots of love and blessings to you and your family!!!
Hey Nigel! I think the way you see your channel really makes it unique in the bonsai RUclips space. I also follow more business-oriented channels but I find myself coming back to the Bonsai Zone because the way I experience bonsai is similar to yours. My trees are far from perfect but you helped me to stay motivated to practice bonsai! Keep up the good work!
Nigel, I wouldn't worry about sharing your opinions or what others say. It's a case of each to their own. Bonsai is an art after all and in any art you have a multitude of different styles and people are free to pick and choose.
Your larch forest is beautifully realistic. Thank you Nigel for sharing your thoughts and knowledge as you work.
Again... this has always been my favorite forest planting...
What a work out shoveling all of that snow and then doing videos. You deserve a well relaxing cup of hot tea while you relax in your favorite chair tonight.
This is a beautiful forest. Those trees have real stature and majesty.
Having a conversation with your forest, going with what it gives you! What a great hobby!
Glad the camera survived the fall. Your larch forrest always amazes me, such a beautiful landscape and design..I'm still waiting to spot that bear coming out of hibernation. Some big cuts and difficult decisions that I'm sure will help the tree's future. Thanks Nigel for another update on your fantastic forrest.
You can't get all to like your opinion, but the thing is, this is art, and no one art is the same, some you like and some you don't and that is what people don't realize. It is about fun doing it and doing it for your soul .
When the fan starts revving up I can't stop myself from looking through the glass to see if the greenhouse is taxiing out for take-off. Keep those chocks anchored!
Nigel doing big cuts and the fan is cheering in the background! And i still love the peekaboo tree (small one in the back behind the front tree)
💚💚💚
I think the larch forest looks need and tidy, and that beautifull music really gave me goosebumps! Thanks for this upload!
Turned out really nice Nigel 👍
The weather seems crazy everywhere. Lol
Today in Anaheim California, it went from strong cold wind, to actual snow, to rain, to hail, back to rain, now back to strong cold wind with the sun out.
That sun feels good though.
This is one fantastic forest. Tutorial on the explanation of what you are doing is superb. Spring on the way with some new growth to this cool forest.
Thank you for just doing your videos, and all your knowledge
Your larch forest is very cool, Nigel! 👍👍👍
I really like this Larch Forest, no matter what season, leaves or without leaves. It's an amazing job!!
Larch forest looks beautiful!
very beutifull Larch forest bonsai, great work Nigel... love it
i love hearing your knowledge and thoughts, you inspire me so much! i only have a small jade plant that im taking care of right now, but i hope to get many more beautiful plants. i love working on art while watching these videos, and sometimes ill take some time to draw out the plants you're working on ☺
Just watched your first video with this forest from 2014. It's really incredible to seen how much they and the landscape and grown and matured together. Gorgeous trees.
Thanks, yes it's been quite a journey and an enjoyable one too!!
I bet ya thought the text book bonsai society was coming for ya when the bang went off 🤣
I thought that was the end for sure!!
Great video, great forest and I'm glad your camera is ok!
The forest looks great. I hope I can visit the Bonsai Zone one day and see it in 3D someday!
Some of the cuttings would make great tiny bonsai - if they rooted.
I have a larch in the gr\arden I wanted to use as a base for cuttings etc. I hope I can propagate a few this year!
The fan really lets you know when the sun is coming out 🤣
Looking awesome! It's been so good to be able to follow this develop over the years, thanks!! :)
I totally agree when you talked about wiring the tree in the pot. Hence, I used raffia in a couple of situations that I didn't have adequate rocks. Nice thing is thay they degrade in a few months and the roots have settled better.
Watching live
incredible forest! always enjoy seeing it!
Nigel, You can always use radiator hose clamps on the tripod to hold the legs in place.
Bravo Nigel sei un esempio da imitare...mi piacerebbe conoscerti e parlare di esperienze bonsaistiche
Very good camera work on this larch video.
Thank you very much!
it is very nice bonsai forest panorama
Hi Nigel, I am a newbie at bonsai and your “Clip and Grow” technique really inspired me to start this hobby. I look forward to growing minature trees that look completely natural. This Larch forest is amazing! I have a bunch of Chinese Elm that I want to make a forest of in the future. Keep the videos coming! 👍🏻
No worries, Master, because you are the most popular Bonsai Master, so that's why too much comments have to read😊😉
Larch forest is a beauty no doubt. Bonsai should be to mimic trees in nature imho first of all. However as it developed in Japan inherited from the Chinese origins it is often highly stylised and in its extreme form almost like a "pad-topiary" with basic structure from nature. Think there is room for many adaptations where one is purely art form while the other are natural masterpieces. No right or wrongs but we all have our preferences and to claim one is better than the other is un-necessary. I all comes down to personal taste. I am more impressed of the type where you mimic natural trees like Nigel. 😇🌲🌳
Foist!

Hey, don't feel that you have to reply to comments!
Thanks for the videos.
I know how you always defend not using wiring. It is true that if it's done at the wrong time of year or left on too long that wiring can scar branches. it is also true that some people wire trees in an unnatural way. however if a tree is wirerd properly and you see it afterward along one that was grown without wires. you likely cannot tell them apart. that being said I do agree that there are a lot of people who seem to have no clue how it is supposed ot be done.
I learned something new about larches (not) thickening up from a senior member of our club this week.
Most of the thickness they put on at the end of the year. If you stop feeding it at the end of summer it shouldn't gain as much thickness in the fall. Hope this helps :) will sure try it for myself aswell.
Thanks Peter, very interesting!!!
Hello, Nigel. Do you plan to repot it someday and expose some surface roots?
Ciao Nigel gran bel lavoro la tua foresta, volevo chiederti se non avessi mai pensato a creare dei ten.jin sugli apici...
Hi Nigel, how old are the larches and do they still grow? Thank you 🌳👍🏼
They are about 25 years old and yes they are very vigorous!!
i like when you share opinions on bonsai style. imo it's important for artists to have their own vision, and to make arguments in support of it. you won't find two artists who have the same vision. they will disagree. but as long as they stay faithful to *their own* vision, they will both be right. even when their styles end up being very different.
the challenge for bonsai growers, then, is to figure out what their vision is. maybe you want naturalistic trees that avoid the appearance of manipulation, like Nigel has - so you'll listen closely to what he says. or maybe you have more of an 'abstract art' type of vision, like with e.g. contorted junipers that need heavy wiring - so you'll listen more closely to someone else. neither bonsai grower is incorrect, but if you jumble their points of view together, you'll probably end up growing something that looks incoherent. so it's important to apply consistent judgement when you're deciding what advice to follow.
Btw, I looked up "old larch bonsai" on google images. The images I got made me uncomfortable lol XD
Your larch look like actual larch.
Lol, yes I've looked too, most have very neat and orderly branches, maybe they are a domesticated variety!!
From Abraham Lincoln: You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time, but you can never please all of the people all of the time.
Is it Art, or is it just clipping? .... for me it has to be Art !
Definitely an art or anyone could create a nice tree!!
You need a Nigel Sanders ChatGPT bot for handling those comments lol
Are you sure you are 70? Where do you find the energy?
Again... this has always been my favorite forest planting...
