- In this video, I work on a lovely tree sent to me by Xavier from Expressions of Grace Bonsai, and I send him back a couple of my own trees.

And his videos where he works on my trees
• Tonys@TonysBonsai - A... (Part 1)
• Tonys@TonysBonsai Bon... (Part 2)
Tony you Xavier should do some more of these videos, very interesting. 👍
Glad you enjoyed it Bob. We have plans to do another collaboration in the summer
Love what you did to the larch Tony fab job
Thanks Stevie, It went better than I was even hoping for
Love the movement you gave that Tony! Nice stop motion too!
Cheers mate. I left the white balance and exposure on auto so it was all over during the stop motion. that's why I went black and white.
Cheers Tony!😊
Thanks Steve
Another great video Tony, and what a beautiful tree from Xavier. The final design is you definitely ‘walking the walk’ great job👍🏾
Thanks Simon. I was really pleased with this tree, and since filming it's budded out very nicely and is looking healthy.
Tony The Fearless! Impressive the amount of bend you can get in a thick tree trunk. Another enjoyable video.
Thanks Susan. I like to push trees to their limits from time to time, and I got away with it this time
No one can bend a tree like you Tony! Excellent work.
Cheers Raymond. I do like to go after my trees, and I think I've been lucky so far.
Tony …. Master of my morning bends 😀 Excellent stuff and loved the stop motion part …. Shaun the Sheep would have been proud of it!👍
It's interesting that you mention shaun the sheep. Nick Park who invented Wallace and Gromit went to the same school as me.
Nice Collab. Some bold bending.🙂👍
Thank you. Sometimes we have to just go for it mate
Good work Tony great idea to get together and test each other, I think you made the best of the Larch so let’s see what he does with the trees you have sent him. Take care.
Thanks Joe. I was really happy with how this one went, and I think Xav does an equally good job on the material I sent him.
You did good there Tony it looks fantastic 👏👏👏
Thanks Rob. It turned out really well I think
Secoind. 😮
I hope you sent Xav a difficult juniper. I know he loves junipers 😂😂😂
Great end result there.
He sent me an absolute conundrum but thnaks to Candice I had the plan to defeat it! It was the Holly that was the real nightmare tree :)
You know I just couldn't resist sending him a prickly juniper 🤣
I was wincing when you went for those heavy bends. It is really weird watching someone else work a tree that you have done the initial stuff on. I would never have done that sort of bending for fear of breaking it. Well done to Bendy Master. Definitely deeper pot for Larch - they like a little bit of room in the roots. I often do that with sphagnum on a tree I want to give a little extra help. Absolutely fantastic styling on a tree that I thought had a lot of options and potential. I purchased it as a 2-yr-old whip in 2017 with 20 others. I really enjoyed what you have done. Are you sure i cant ahve it back now?
I can't believe it Xav. I just got up after a lie-in, and after all our discussions about posting times etc, I only went and posted it at 04.30 this morning by accident. I am sorry about that mate, I feel like a bit of an idiot.
@@TonysBonsai wa wa wa :)
Lovely tree - I want one too, lol! It is very nice and I must look for a larch.
No room but maybe something died over winter 😅 Really liked this video.
I'm sure you can squeeze just one more tree in mate!
Really enjoyed this one Tony thanks
Cheers Danny. Glad you enjoyed it
Xavier did you a solid with a beautiful piece of material there Tony. Those roots were a bit Fugly but your artistic styling used them to your advantage. Nice bends, pruning, and pot selection. Bravo! Thanks, keep growing
Cheers Matt. He certainly did. The plan was just to send something challenging, but Xav decided to treat me with this beauty. Should be a cracker in the future I hope.
Ahhh Bendy Master Tony made me smile, i see Xav wants the larch back now and i understand why..you did a top notch job of styling it Bendy, i see some of you past skills of chopping up came in handy🤣... fantastic video mate, the slowmo and hyperspeed of Xav naming you Bendy master was a great touch too. The tree truly looks fantastic 👍
🤣🤣I was laughing to myself editing that part of Xav calling me the bandy master. Another option for my merch that! 🤣
This is great!!!!!
Cheers buddy
That looks lovely material. Think you've done it justice.
Thanks Kevin. I was really happy when I opened the box, and I'm looking forward to seeing it when it hopefully goes green in the spring.
Well done guys ❤ Thanks a lot a have a great Sunday! 🙋♀️
Cheers mate. Will do.
Great collab you two! Tony the work you did with this larch is absolutely awesome. I really like the exposed root and hard first slant.
I think Xavier will have a blast with the 3 trees you sent him. I have that video set to play next!
Cheers buddy. I knew as soon as I saw it then that I had to get those roots into the composition.
Nice to see your collaborative efforts, well done u both. Keep growing.xx
Thanks Mandy. This was a great bit of fun
Clever idea! And the intercutting on Xavier's video works really well. Huge congratulations.
Thank you David. It was quite a bit of work editing this but I think it came our really well.
@@TonysBonsai Zoom bonsai is next!
Great work Tony! You gave this larch a good start to his Bonsai career
Thank you. Yes I'm really pleased with this one, and happy to at least get a tree in a proper pot!
@@TonysBonsai the smartes thing you do is not to rush your other trees into Bonsai pot. Keep them in a plant pot. Bigger roots and they will grow faster. This spring i will repot some of my tree from Bonsai pots to big plant pot
absolutely blown away by this. a great tree and wow: you are truly the master of bends. complete transformation and a fun collaboration to watch.
Thank you. This was a really fun project, and I think the tree styling went really well.
🍁 nice styling for the larch. It's on a good way. 👍
Thank you. I think it ended up looking pretty good with the nice movement.
Those crazy roots. I’m waiting on a fairly large delivery of a variety of bare root trees. Seeing your video on your larches and now this one I sure hop I don’t have to deal with this sort of roots. If I do I’ll be trying some ground layering. Thankfully this video illustrates a creative option. ✌🏻
You may be in luck mate. I'm just editing a video where I make a couple of fusion bonsai. The second one is a great way to use trees with shocking roots that I think works really well and is super easy to put together.
@@TonysBonsai ,, that’s awesome. I’m looking forward to watching it. Thanks
Hi tony, you did a great job on larch, well done.
Thanks Brian. I was just checking on on this tree this morning, and it's budding out and looking very healthy.
That some serious bends on that magnificent tree. What a awesome tradition you guys have.
Thank you. Yes I am really happy with how this tree ended up looking.
Tough love :D Nice chunky larch you inherited!
Yeah, It's got some really nice potential, and I think given a couple of years it's going to look pretty nice.
Such a nice video, i particularly loved the stop motion part from when you were styling the tree ^-^
Thank you. I love a bit of stop motion too.
Well this is all fun 😄 But also informative! Nice one both.
Thank you. Glad you enjoyed it.
10:57 Hahahaha 🤣🤣🤣🤣
🤣🤣Made me laugh mate
Nice work Tony!
Cheers Kennet.
That is amazing. Unfortunately, bending anything like that is not in the cards for me. I don't have the hand strength anymore, if I ever did! Have you ever used a branch/trunk splitter? That might make things a bit easier for you. It does for me. I look forward to seeing updates on this larch. Thanks for all your hard work and your commentary as you go along.
I have never used my branch splitters no, but I plan on experimenting with them this year. My shoulder is knackered and I doubt I'll be able to bend trees like this forever, so it would be nice to have other techniques to fall back on
Hello Friend! This is more than just a video, you put love and passion into it. Great job! Thank you for sharing this video.. Always believe in yourself and keep doing what you love, good luck
Thank you for the lovely comment, especially about the passion. I just love bonsai!
Love your channel, Tony!
Thank you Diego. Glad you're enjoying it!
My word,Tony. Your fearless approach to making bends is truly inspiring. I will be seeking out some of the vet tape that you use as it seems just as effective as raffia and much easier to use. The larch that Xav sent you has enormous potential and I really like the idea of leaving part of the roots exposed. It gives the impression of a tree that has struggled against harsh weather. I am looking forward to seeing it once the foliage breaks out the the spring.Good stuff, my friend.
Thanks Elric. I've been putting together some fusions/clump styles yesterday, and I ended up just using the vet tape, and it performed brilliantly. It's really versatile stuff, and I have yet to break a branch or trunk with it applied.
"BENDY MASTER" indeed! :)
I have re aneled aluminium wire it works ok. If it’s very twisted it is still a little harder but it softens up great in the old bbq.
Good idea William. I might have a go sometime. I could probably do it fairly easily in my log burner.
Tony the bend master band ✅🥀
🤣I'm not sure I'll be putting that on my merch!
What’s your normal bonsai soil mix tony?
I normally use pine bark, perlite, grit and compost in equal parts, but I ran out of bark so I've been experimenting with coco coir. In future I'm going to substitute the compost for the coco and reduce the pine bark.
Great work Tony I’ll head over to Xavier now dude.
R you keeping that tree ?
Alright mate. yeah the trees were a swap deal. We've both got plenty so we thought we would send each other a tree or two.
Which tape are you using there? 😊
It's called vet tape. It's designed for animals like dogs and horses with injured legs, but it works great for bonsai as an alternative to rafia.
@@TonysBonsai Thank you very much. That's very interesting!
Did you compare it to electrical tape and self amalgamating tape? Do you think it makes a difference if it's open for water or not?
I actually have three yamadori european larches and did drastic bending too without tape. They don't care at all breaking, especially if you do it in sommer.
But it's very interesting for the future since better safe than sorry :)
I have never used that self-amalgamating tape, but I did try electrical tape and I didn't really like working with it. Perhaps it's just in my mind, but I really like the way this feels and it seems to work perfectly.
@@TonysBonsai Perfect, definately gonna try this thank you very much 🤩
Leaning exposed roots. Now where have I seen that before? 😊

🤣🤣That Peter Chan is always copying my ideas!
@@TonysBonsai ,, exactly what I thought. What a hack 😂
🤣🤣
Was that bending master part supposed to Creep me out like that?🫣 it's 3:34am across the pond I was half sleep and it was weird hehehehe
🤣🤣It certainly was. I hope you didn't have any nightmares!
