Thanks for the update Andrew. Nice to see two combines working and the Class really seems to crack on with the job although a slightly narrower cut. Whatever the vehicle if you get a lot of breakdowns you soon loose confidence in it but hopefully you'll be able to get on with the job now and get it in the barn. Thanks for the update again.

combine always breaks down on a fine day
That chute is not normal for the Claas usually they have a kicker spout to throw it further away so you don't need to be so close or roll on the straw, I think that and the short pipe are options whoever specced it chose, maybe to compliment the montana as when it cants over the spout can be very high off the ground and the straight drop may help, if it had the standard angle spout when it leans over it would throw it much further our neighbours 760 montana has the angle spout as does our 570, I haven't seen many with the straight down one 😃
The other problems is chasing bales and finding a space to put them if you haven’t got it

Harvest time is always very busy and machines working to their limit so sadley breakdowns are inevatable. Maybe its time time to swap your New Holland in for a nice new Lexion.
I’ll be keeping the NH another 3 years due to a new sprayer and quad replacement arriving over the next few months.

I feel for you Andrew. Breakdown after breakdown is very frustrating and four days not going is a long time when crops are fit.
So lucky that the other farm are finished and able to help and you've a modern store able to cope.

Those rotary combines sure do romp on! Our straw walker won't get above 4k in a good crop. I hope your new holland holds up, we got lucky this year, 735 acres cut with minimal downtime but we usually have something big go wrong, it doesn't matter how well you look after them, something will break eventually!

In the top of the grain store brought back some memories of very hot dusty days running the store as a young teeager before i was trusted on tractor duties 😁

When I was in arable working back in the 1970s, we always had two combines. This was on the basis of if one broke down, we would at least be still operating with the other one. Seeing your grain store brought the memories back. The steel bins with the conveyor system. We didn’t have the short cross conveyor, which would have saved me an awful lot of shoveling. One thing I didn’t see and you never mentioned was a cleaner. Presumably, no one bothers to clean the sample these days. I watch Harry’s farm and he certainly doesn’t.
We also had trial plots in one of the fields each year. This was a company called Miln Marsters. Are they still in existence?
My father used to trade with Miln Marsters, don’t think they are around any more. Owning combines has changed due to the cost. One decent sized machine is capable of 3,000 acres, gone are day when you have 2 smaller machines in case 1 breaks down.
Frustrating to have issues with the combine. Probably no comfort to you, but when I was repairing them I always found that combines tended to have good years and bad years. One season, a combine would breakdown several times, but then would go through the next season without issues.
A true story, in the 1980's one customer bought a new model combine, and it was nothing but trouble. It got to the stage that I would visit the farm every day to see what had failed this time. One evening I got home, the phone rung, it was the customer telling me not to go there tomorrow as it hadn't brokedown today !!!!! Does anyone still make water misters to fit to grain elevators? Remember one customer with an IH Axial flow had one fitted in a very dry year.

The best time to buy a fresh combine is when there is a foot of snow on the the ground as the dealers are a lot keener to sell
We won’t be swapping though with a new sprayer and Quad replacement already on order!
Just a thought,what about getting the commune working without the chopper then follow on with a tractor mounted chopper ? I know it’s an extra cost but it keeps the grain coming in and also maintains any inputs you gain from re-incorporating the straw into the land 🤷♂️
A lot of work and girl and we don’t have any spare labour.

Daft question...Andrew, you don’t want a bailer from a different farm because of the risk of black grass...is it a risk allowing a combine on?
I wondered why they couldn’t just wash the baler down before going to the field?

@@jamesrogerson5023 Agricultural baling contractors wouldn't offer to do that, it would be too time consuming to wash down a machine between working on different farms. They make their money on hectares of straw baled so un-necessary downtime isn't something they would welcome.
@@revman417 wouldn’t offer or won’t do it for free. Probably depends on price of straw. Used to run a baler on my dad’s contracting business, was further north, so we never got going much before 10am due to the dew so we did wash down ever couple days as unable to go straight away in general. But was more to prevent fire risk then anything else.
@@revman417 was a round baler, so would imagine doing the same on a square one would be a pain as chamber is empty when moving on a round baler.
Nothing like a bit or harvest stress! You are more patient that me that’s for sure. 4 days down with a combine is a “challenge” to say the least.
Have you had many fires your way?
Quite a few fires dotted around and combines gone up in flames.

No downsides from me, we’re not using mined phosphate and no bags to dispose of and it’s using a product which is not going to dwindle!

Are you getting a bonus for dry OSR ? here in southern Alberta we sometimes harvest Canola with only 3 % moister
9% is our trading moisture, about that and we get deductions, below that and down to 6% we get moisture bonuses, below 6, no bonus and the merchant can reject it. This year was the driest I’ve ever known oil seed rape and a lot of farmers didn’t cut in the middle of the day, some only harvested at night.
I suspect with all of your combine woe’s you’ll be looking to change the combine for a Claas 😬

Ordering a new Combine for next year is very difficult, heard that some machine’s ordered for this harvest might not be delivered until march or April so sounds that if order now might not get in time. Have you got a delivery date for your new big tractor, did you decide to buy a new sprayer.? If yes what have you gone for
I’ve heard that too but the manufacturers have had to supply a combine for this harvest. We went for a Househam sprayer

That was my only reservation having one in. I’ll explain in my next update.
