Hi Bruce. I’m having the same problem. Both sensors are lit up and door is in the down position. Opener blinks 10 times but the closer does not move at all. All I did was changed the door and put a new door. Never worked since I changed doors, but it worked great before changing doors. ????
Can you do that if one censer (green Light ) is not on ?
I'm lazy; I'd have just shaded the "eyes". Do You know if there's supposed to be 5 volts at the terminals?
Nothing wrong with the way you did it, but we have the same problem at work, door faced West and during the summer when the sun sets, the sensor wouldn't work. We used toilet paper core, wrape in foil to reflect heat, used as a housing for the sensor. Works great.
after 15 years fighting our garage door, and 2 hours trying to figure how to bypass the sensors, I found this. Thank you, no problems now
I'm glad you were able to finally get it taken care of John! Thanks for watching!

Bruce, we did everything you did on our excellent Chamberlain belt drive, including coloring the inside of the toilet roll with black magic marker! We hired a professional installer, who tuned and adjusted the unit, tried different sensors ($70 extra), I tried switching them to opposite sides, then tried moving them back into the shade, factory techs were marvelous and even sent "shade blockers...worthless" and a new circuit board, which I easily installed, all to no avail. Then I found your excellent and easy to follow video and that solved the mystery. Apparently, the factory can't tell us this solution because of liability issues (thanks, lawyers!). I really liked the wiring diagram too. Thanks for your efforts!
Glad to hear you were finally able to get your door fixed! "If you want it done right then you'll have to do it yourself" :)
I will admit I thought it was a little ridiculous how you did it at first, then I rigged up mine the same way and realized you are a genius!! Thank you!
It's hard to beat! Thanks for watching!
Took me 10 min to do this and we’ve been doing manual override from the wall 3yrs now and walking out front door. I love you , thank you I liked and subscribed.
Great to hear you were able to get the door fixed. Nice job!
I own a small business installing garage doors as well as repairing them I have been doing this line of work for 15 years and have seen this done lots of times and can say it’s saved a lot of people some headaches but I can say if you do this just be extra cautious if you have small children I’ve also seen the consequences that can occur from doing this. If I can give any advice at all that will help someone that does this it would be to make sure your down force sensitivity is properly adjusted. Newer openers have digital sensitivity settings so it’s automatically set when setting the opener up. Hope someone reads this and it saves them from having a door fall on their car or jump track. 🙏
Liftmaster sensors does not affected by the sun, this guy just needs a new safety sensors set. Sensors are optical and electrical device and this problem can be remedy by just installing new sensors.
@@yevgeniymaksimovich8505 the manual literally states to keep them out of the sun to prevent possible problems but I'm sure you know better than the manufacturer right
@@matthewortenzio4365 i own garage doors and openers installation business, and i personally installed 100th of the openers of all kinds of models, and yes, i knows better, definitely better than you!
@@yevgeniymaksimovich8505 I am sure any accredited installer would also not do this for any customer for liability safety concerns, sounds like a nightmare, I have old Genie lifts in AZ no issues, going with a Chamberlain 1 an 1/4 HP 4613's this weekend, I am installing the right way! even though the Operator coming out is an old Chain drive Chamberlain that has NO sensors from 1989, yes it lasted that long even with nylon gear replacement I did last year, because I was silly enough to try to learn a new remote, and since that 2 weeks ago, anything sets off the Opener, even a car remote for locks......so lesson learned, if things work, do not try programming.
Thank you! Perfect fix from someone who speaks perfect English.
You're welcome! Thanks for watching!
The sun is my exact problem in both Spring and Fall.
Thank for the video!!!
You are welcome! My garage door works perfectly since I made the modifications and I haven't regretted it one bit. Good luck with your project!
Yep, have the same problem. The sun in the morning shines right into the receiver. I hold my arm up to block the sun. I never really paid much attention to it until my oldest kids was too stupid to figure this out.
This solved my problem. Saved me hundreds of bucks. Heaven has a spot saved for folk like you. :)
It's good to hear the video helped you solve your problem. It's always nice to save some $ if you can IMO!
This was awesome I spent three year closing my garage manually and with this video I’m using my remote. Awesome brother
Right on! 👍🏻
I've fought this problem for 20 years. I finally gave in and got a new door lift, thinking a newer one would work. Wrong, the new one's much worse. I just did your trick a few minutes ago and it works like a charm. THANKS SO MUCH!!!! I wish I would have known 20 years ago.
It’s good to hear you we’re finally able to fix the problem.
Thank you for helping me fix this incredibly annoying problem at my house. My husband keeps saying he'll look at it but it's been 8 months and I think I've waited long enough. I'm the only one who parks in the garage soooo...... Our kids are grown too and no kids come to our house, so I'm not worried about any safety issues. Thank you!
You are welcome and I'm glad you were able to get it fixed! You are right it is an annoying problem but a fairly simple fix. You'll be glad you did it every time you use the door and the best part is "You did it yourself"!!! 👍👍👍
Way to go. These sensors are for the manufacturers’ liability, not primarily for customers.
They are a pain in the butt.
@Fiyad Alli duh
Been fighting that door all weekend until I came across this video. You are a lifesaver
Awesome! It's nice when you push that button and the door just works. 👍
I have been struggling with the door problem for the last three years. Your fix was genius.
It's good to hear it worked for you too Antonio! I haven't had one problem with my garage door since I made this video just over one year ago. 👍
Exactly what my door is doing. My house faces west and the heat is actually causing an issue. I live in Arizona. Thanks for this video.
You can do it!
Thank You for the tip. Once I saw your video I said to myself "How easy was that."
Thanks, I wish you the best with your project.
My issue turned out to be the same thing. At this time of year, at a certain time of day, the sun was shining at the correct angle to make the sensor think there was something blocking the door, so it would go back up and do the “light clicking” on and off several times. I love the simplicity of this solution. Thanks!
You are going to love this fix. I haven’t had a problem with this door since I did the fix.
Bless you sir! These damn sensors have been a headache for years now! The house I grew up in never had sensors and we survived just fine. Thank you for this video!
I hope it helps you out Adam. Thanks for stopping by!
Thank you so much for the explanation. So easy to follow. No more sun issues or knocking them out of whack and having to get them lined back up.
Glad it was helpful!
This video made me look like a wizard-hero-superman... so thanks for putting it online. My daughter's garage door opener got fried during a lightening strike - so I had to order a new logic board. After install, the unit worked, but the sensors gave an indication that there was interference and would not operate. After fiddling with it, I suspected the sensors themselves were also fried, so I ordered two replacements. When they arrived, I installed them but got the same indications. Frustrated, I found your video and followed your directions -- whalla! So now I know the sensor wires coming from the logic board and buried inside the walls have been 'fried' (at least one of them). This bypass technique got her unit working like a champ, and with no children in the house I'm comfortable allowing it to work this way until such time as I run new sensor connection wires. Many thanks.
I'm glad to hear the video helped you out! Thanks for stopping by.
Thanks a lot! My sensors were installed on the roller reel and are prone to get misaligned due to temperature change and vibration of the garage door. Tried several hours to align them and finally gave up. I decided to use your way to bypass it to save my back and knee.
You're welcome Jason! Glad to hear you were able to fix your garage door problem!
Thank you for this video. The sunlight in the morning to afternoon has caused my door not go close for years. I am going to follow your instructions and finally remedy the garage door not closing due to sunlight.
Excellent! You'll be glad you did it!
What happens if you flip the sensors? This way the sun will hit the transmitter and not the receiver!?
I simply swapped the receiving sensor (green light) with transmitting sensor (amber). The sun light was effectively “blinding” the receiving sensor, it has no effect on the transmitting sensor. Worked great and safety function is still functioning.
Yes, I believe they recommend to put the green "receiver" sensor on the sunnier side.
That sounds like a better solution. I would prefer to have the safety feature of the sensor working rather than bypassing it. It only has to happen once to have a tragic accident with a child or even a pet
In swapping the sensor locations, are there any concerns with wiring? Can I still continue to connect white wire to white, and gray wire to gray? Are there any tricks needed to lining up the sensor eyes again?
This is soon useful compared to the others where they advise to just wiggle until they magically align again. Seriously the advice on lots of videos.
Thanks so much for a real answer.
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you very much for this simple but bright idea. I will use this technique to determine if my issue is related to eye sensors or unit itself. Thank you so much
I just mounted my sensors on a scrap piece of angle about an inch apart and wired into the opener normally. Mounted the angle somewhere. Its also nice to be able to close the door and walk out as it starts to close without tripping the beam.
Excellent!
The daytime sun issue is EXACTLY the problem I'm having! Thanks for the information!
You are so welcome!
Thank you! Adjusting the alignment was a regular thing for us over the last three years and typically at a horrible time (when I'm at work and the wife is home or leaving the home). Today I couldn't get it lined up after messing with it for an hour and was about to pay a tech to come out. We know the risks and they just don't apply to us either. Many thanks to you.
You are so welcome! I'm glad it worked for you!
I didn''t realize the sun could disrupt these sensors.I used the toilet paper roll trick you mentioned and my problem is gone.Thanks.😁
Nice 👍🏻
Outstanding!!! We are elderly and rarely have company. Had a lightning strike fry the logic boards in both our doors. Also, her sending sensor went out. I put new one on and it's fine. Now mine's out. Got new ones but now no power to the sensors. Been playing with the wall control. since it has a separate set from it to the same terminals as the floor sensors are on. Guessing when the outside pad is used that set tells the wall mount to activate motor? Just a guess. Problem is now no power to light them. This may be my only way around it. Thank you so much. Bill
I wish you the best Bill. Thanks for stopping by!
That is a clever solution !
I've been having intermittent/random issues with my sensors. Your reasoning just reinforced my suspicion that my sensors are affected by morning sunlight, (but only during the late Summer months.).
I ordered new sensors which NOW include UV protection, so I am hopeful that will resolve the problem, permanently.
Thanks !
Sounds like you got it figured out. 👍
Perfect explanation and it’s exactly the protist was having. The sunlight was the problem on mine.
Solved my problem. Thank you! I got fed up with trying to align those dang sensors.
You are welcome Joseph! I'm glad you solved your problem door. Now you can live in peace like I have since I did this modification :)
I hate those sensors so much. This time of year, leaves get in front of them and it’s infuriating having to get out of the car and moving them just so it will close. Thanks for the video!
Thank you. I had to take motorcycle out then manually close garage because of senor issue. This solved it. You rock!! ✌️
You're welcome and thanks for stopping by! 👍👊
Excellent video! I have this exact issue and it drives everyone nuts. The way you explained it and the diagram, make it easy to duplicate. Will be my project this weekend. Thank you so much.
You're welcome Justin, good luck with your project. You'll be glad you did it.
Worked great. VERY clear instructions. My problem appears to have been a short in one of the leads going to the sensors. I plugged them directly into the opener and it works like a champ.
My garage was "jerking" as it closed and it was obviously a partial short causing it to surge. It's as smooth as silk now. I'll rewire when my garage isn't the temperature of the surface of the sun. Thanks again.
I’m confused how You wired it
If you just disconnect the sensors will 5he door operate or does it have to be connected tobsensors
Perfect simple fix
Thank you
I love the frame at the intro lol. Thank you for this brilliant and simple fix to my door not closing at certain times due to sunlight. I just made the fix and it only took 15 minutes. This is going to save us many future frustrations. 🙏🙏
I'm glad the video helped you out. Thanks for stopping by!
Thanks for the info after fighting with snow and sun it works! I did it in about 30min and it works great and I can replace it if necessary, a good diy fix!
Nice work!
BRILLIANT!! I've have been working on this damn door for 2 days.
If the sun is your door problem and you do this little fix, you won't have to touch your door again for a long time. I haven't had any problems with mine since this fix. It's been almost two years now. Hope you can get it fixed.
That was my problem and I did just as you and it works 👍
Excellent! 👍👊
Thank you this fixed the problem hated backing out the garage and having to go back into the house to close the door holding the button
Great job!
Thank you!!! Works perfect. I couldn't figure out why it would work sometimes and not others. In the mid morning-noon the sun is directly hitting one of the sensors. Moved to the top the way you show and no longer having problems.
Excellent!
Facing South and have the same problem. I'm gonna fix it! Thanks!
thanks for the tip, i was able to troubleshoot the sensors with your joint method and find a bad sensor.Tip my hat to you
Nice job!
Thanks for this! I had just started installing my first ever opener in my old garage/workshop, when I realized that there was literally nowhere other than the floor to mount the sensors, which would be horrible. After a brief moment of panic, I turned to RUclips and there you were with the answer to my problem. I taped the two sensors face to face onto a leftover piece of the mounting angle for stability and screwed the whole thing to the 2x4 that the power unit hangs from up in the rafters. The door works great.
Thanks again.
I'm glad it helped you out and you were able to resolve your situation.
Thank you. I had tried to solve the problem by shading the sensor with plastic pipe extensions, adding polarized film to the pipes ends, inverting sensor location from left to right. Nothing. Finally went with your suggestion. That took care of it
You are welcome Humberto, glad to hear you got it taken care of. Thanks for watching!
The sunlight keeps setting off my sensor too and it was driving me crazy!
Thanks for the video!
Glad it helped!
Same issue with a new door , i had to remove the old wires , now i mixed them and nothing work until search the tube ...thnks for the help and i approve your decision ...one day the safety will kill us !
OMG. 👍👍👍👍👏👏 Thank you for your help. It works and literally with your help it took 2 seconds thank you😊
Great to hear!
I did this repair and first test was 100% perfect shot who would have guessed the neighbors yappy dog that poops on my lawn just happened to be right under it, tragic.
Nah, just kidding. Excellent to know I can offer this solution to a customer with this issue. Thanks
IMO it's a great fix for this issue. I haven't had to touch my opener for several years since I made the mods to mine.
Did not even have to cut the wires, just untwined them, then intertwined the two striped wires on the sensor, then the two white wires. Taped the sensors together and inserted the intertwined wires as shown in the video. It took 15 minutes. Solved a long-standing sun problem!
Nice job 👍
This is genius, I have the same issue with sunlight hitting the sensors or the sensors getting bumped out of
Alignment . Thank you!!!
You're welcome Todd! You'll be glad you did it. Thanks for stopping by!
I did it as soon as I saw your video, works great , thanks again !
Excellent!
genius in it's simplicity. I love it. I'm gonna copy your solution. Thanks for sharing.
I wish you the best!
There is a simple fix to the issue with the sun. The manufacturer sells cardboard sensor protectors They take about 5 minutes to install.
Thank you! My garage door is also south facing and would not close on very sunny days. That's more often than not here in FL!
Glad it helped you out David! 👍
Thank you for sharing. I have tried everything to keep sunlight out of my sensors. This actually worked and was easy to follow your directions!
Excellent!
wow, I did that this afternoon ... and it works!
Works like a charm. Answer is at about 6:45
Thank you !!!! I have the same problem with my garage door , thank you
You are welcome Grant. It's a cheap easy fix that worked for me and is still working today.
Brilliant! Saved me buying new opener. Thanks
You're welcome Robert! Glad to hear it saved you some money!
THANK YOU!! Easy solution and easy to follow instructions.
You're welcome! Thanks for stopping by.
Helpful information! Thanks Mucho.
You're welcome!
I'll be doing this tomorrow, ran into this today. Replaced a 30 year old unit that never had them.
Have fun with your project!
@@DIYHomesteadProjectsDIYHP10 would it damage it if I tried to just loop a wire between the two ports on the back of the unit? Do the eyes need to be in the circuit?
I don't think it would damage anything but it won't work. The electrical signal has to be a pulsed signal not a constant signal. You need either the sensors like I did it or install a pulse generator on the correct pulse setting for your unit.
@@DIYHomesteadProjectsDIYHP10 thanks. Just got done, didn't try it anyway. Taped the sensors together and tucked them above the unit.
👍
Thank you!!
Just finished, I can close my dang door!!
Good job! 👍
Thanks so so so much .. I had exactly same issue where the sunlight hitting the beam .. you are a true hero
You're welcome Abu! Good luck with your project and thanks for watching!
grat tutorial just did it. worked exactly like you said. I sm pretty decent handyman but this really helped. You can't disable this feature just by cutting the wires.
great
Great to hear!
This is wonderful and exactly what we needed. Thank you so much!!
You are welcome Anna, thanks for watching!
Excellent video and really highly appreciated, but my question to be raised is that there's no electrical continuity to both sensors and i cannot see green or red lights on sensors . How to rectify this issue.
Thanks! Just what I wanted to know. Also, as an idea for your original problem. Take a small peice of scrap metal or ?? and make a shade/sunblock that attaches right on the bracket and extends past the line of the sun to the sensor a little bit. Voila! Sun is blocked, space is saved, can retain "safety" feature. There is also a possibility that the sun is heating your door and framework up to the extent that they are moving/growing and causing the alignment of the beam tranceivers become unaligned.
That's so smart. I can't believe I didn't think of this. Thank you
It has worked well for my garage door. I haven't had to touch anything on this door since I made the modification. It's been working flawlessly!!! I wish you the best if you decide to give it a try!
@DIY Homestead Projects definitely giving it a go. So tired of not being able to close my garage with the garage door openers since it just blinks and refuses to close
Just did it. Finally have a working garage door again. Thank ya.
AWESOME! Enjoy your working garage door :) 👍
This worked amazing. Thank you.
Great to hear!
Great idea, thanks. Embarrassing that i hadnt thought of this

I cannot thank you enough you are a lifesaver!!

Thanks for the info in the video. I had a similar situation except that one of the beams was disconnected. The info in here solved the problem!
I'm glad it helped you out Scott! It's always a good feeling to get something fixed so you can use it again. 👍
Thanks for the info just did mine
No problem 👍 thanks for stopping by.
Thank you for this! Remember guys until that door is closed anyone can run in!

Thank you, it worked!!! I had same situation like yours. Thanks again 🙏
Glad it helped
Awesome idea - thanks for this - have the exact same problem due to garage orientation sunlight comes straight onto one of the sensors for 2 h each sunny morning :) This is definitely the most reliable "sunshield" ever
You are welcome Claudiu. It doesn't get more reliable than this.
I solved the sunlight problem a different way. This was on a prior house a few years back. Try dabbing any type of caulk on a very small portion of the sensor lens that is getting hit by sunlight. ... I have done the same on photo sensors that think it is daylight when it is simply detecting light from another source. It would be so much better if manufacturers would routinely provide a "troubleshooting and solutions" resource. As for now, we poke around on the internet searching for help to these vexing problems. Do you say, "Every problem has a solution?" Well, I like to think that is true. But it is also true to say, "Every solution has a problem." Which is why we spend so much time talking about it!
Don't you love it when lawyers and cost accountants make engineering decisions? These extra safety sensors are just a liability condom for the manufacturer. They probably love it when we resort to this because now they are off free should something horribly unlikely happen. They could have used a more expensive, better performing sensor, but no. Easier to just make it the customer's lifetime headache than to build it right.
Thanks a lot for this video!
Thanks for stopping by!
Actually, this was a government mandate in 1994. Leave it to the government to screw everything up!
Thanks for this idea which solves my problems.👍
Happy to help
YESSSSS!! Why didn’t I think of this sooner?!?!
Same exact issue with travel of sun. Cheers, cheaper than rotating house!
Indeed it is!
I might use this trick to restore functionality to my opener, though I was hoping to not buy new sensors at all. I think I'll just have to break down and buy new (because I don't have any at all), then just attach the new sensors in the correct location first & if the sun becomes a problem, well - this trick oughta work a treat.
Good presentation. I did that years ago simply to avoid having to jump over the sensor beam when the door was closing.
Thanks! It's sure been nice to just push the button and the door either opens or closes with no issues. Well, you know what I'm saying. Ha Ha You've been enjoying that for years! 😀😀😀
@@DIYHomesteadProjectsDIYHP10 Yes, but I stumbled onto your video trying to help my son solve his door problem which might be related to sunlight interference like yours. Your/our solution also avoids the common problems of sensor misalignment and dirty sensors, so more benefits. Again, nice video.
Thank you and good luck with your issue. I wish you a Happy New Year!
I just spliced the wires together where the transmitter sensor is located. Didn't have to bother with doing it at the top of the motor. Simple 2 minute fix.
Excellent! 👍🏻
Thanks for keeping this out, it will help me!
Glad to hear it!
A sun shade works aswell, halved pringles can fits nicely .
Yes it will as long as it doesn't get kicked or smashed. 👍
Dude this will solve my issue with snow blowing in the sensors in winter time and making my door not shut thanks for the info 😁
Glad it helped you out Michael, thanks for watching!
@@DIYHomesteadProjectsDIYHP10 oh no problem I found your channel when you talked about the yes welder stuff I found one on my local area on FB for sale works like brand new
NIce!
We have the same issue. The sun kills our sensors and it drives my wife crazy. Thanks for the video
Thanks for stopping by.
Having similar issues with sensor, but mostly just from vibrations along the rail mount. Instead I'll be buying a second set of sensors, mounting them on the wall to face each other, and add a switch to toggle between the old sensors and the new ones facing each other. That way if we have friends over with lots of kids, I can switch it to the existing sensors, and then when it's just the wife and me I can switch to the new sensors. My install will be a little easier since we have a shaft drive garage opener with cables to open/close the door, so the opener is mounted on the wall to the side.
No sensors are needed this days. I always park my car all the way inside my garage, or it stays outside, but never in the middle. The garage door goes back as soon as it touches anything. Thank you for the video.
Thanks for sharing
Sir that was very clever, im going to do thta procedure right know, hopefully will fix my problem thank you very much . Peace ✌️
I wish you the best with your project!
Works like a dream, thank you!!!!
Great to hear! You are welcome Bruce!
