No it wasn't. It's confusing and weird. Makes far more sense to go in ascending order because you actually get to see the storylines, how they build up, how the wrestlers and WrestleMania and wrestling itself change over time, not to mention you can also make a part 2 starting from WrestleMania 41.
From Wrestlemanias 10-29 if it involved Shawn Michaels, Brett Hart, Steve Austin, and or the Undertaker(for the later Manias) in this stretch), they most likely had the best match of the night.
And in the uber-cursed Mania 9, 3 of them competed and all 3 matches sucked. I don't know why "worse mania" is even a discussion, 9 utterly dominates. Other manias have had some really bad matches or bad moments, but 9 was so epically devoid of any redeeming quality that even 3 first ballot GOAT candidates IN THEIR PRIME couldn't produce one watchable match.

48:02 A detail about this match I feel needs to be brought up because of the context of its time: Savage kicking out of the Warrior's first big splash. Now-a-days a lot of Finishers can be glorified transitional moves until they're hit three or five times, but back in this match's day, kicking out of a finisher was strictly a Hogan/Warrior thing only, as it was part of their gimmicks. So to see Randy Savage, as a HEEL no less, finding that surge of pure willpower to kick out of a finisher back then? Utterly jaw-dropping and made what seemed a sure thing not so sure anymore.
Honestly if it wasn't for the shock win of Ryder, the triple threat most likely would be held in a brighter light. Also didn't help that WM 32 sucked as a whole

And dont get me wrong while Brock vs Angle at 19 was danm technical clinic I think HBK vs Y2J was the better match of the night from the storytelling to its pacing and psychology and its technical proficiency
Same for WM 10. Shawn's match was years ahead of the WWE staple, and got 5 stars from Meltzer. Absolutely deserved the top rank, giving Shawn his 10th (or 11th, if you include WM 19) spot in the video
Yeah agreed, the Bryan - Hunter match stands alone with Owen - Bret in top Mania openers for me. Hhh must have been so happy and sad, I bet he wished he wrestling Bryan wayyyyyy more in his career, the two of them worked a very brisk pace, they were a dream in the ring together. Also agree with HBK - Jericho, brilliant WrestleMania altogether though it's hard to pick a best from it, about 7 or 8 matches on the card delivered, Hogan v McMahon was the biggest surprise of the night, it was brilliant the whole way.

Yep, well agreed. Aj and Shane roundly shot down those naysayers (who haven't given it their flowers because they hated it far too much in anticipation, it gets a polite round of applause. Aj was the best wrestler in the world and I don't know why anyone was depressed about the match happening because when Shane is in the ring with top tier performers, he always delivered highly - cough cough v Kurt Angle) And people were dragging on the women's match too considering "the women's revolution" build up that nobody liked, but ON THE NIGHT they dropped all of that stuff and presented the women's triple threat like one of the biggest matches on the show and made it big time and the ladies delivered accordingly
There's always talk about Michaels being held back in his match against Austin due to physical limitations but I never see proof that he was actually stilted by his predicament. It's my favorite match of Michaels career and selling his back pain only made the match better. Plus, Tyson's involvement was a huge boost to the story.
Ric Flair and Randy Savage is a great pick for Wrestlemania 8, but I'd argue that the best match was the hidden gem intercontinental title match between Bret Hart and Roddy Piper.
I think that's one of the greatest stories told through a match ever. Gotta agree with you, even though Flair and Savage is pretty great, the storytelling in Bret and Piper just makes it perfect.
Of the WrestleMania main event stories from years that ended in the number 4 (1994, 2004, 2014 and 2024) Id argue that Cody told the best story of all of them His story had a nice blend of Bret Hart, Chris Benoit and Daniel Bryan’s WrestleMania stories all rolled into one He became the first back to back rumble winner since Stone Cold, feuded with The Rock and had a main event featuring legends like John Cena and The Undertaker interfering on his behalf, capping off in Cody dethroning the greatest title reign of the modern era Woah!!!
That’s one of the reasons why Wrestlemania 19 is my favorite Wrestlemania of all time in my top five it sits at number 1 for me. Wrestlemania 19 had such a stacked card and definitely had a choice between the best matches of that year’s show, which they chose Brock vs. Angle, while we chose HBK vs. Y2J, & of course there was the final battle between The Rock vs. Stone Cold Steve Austin. It was also the last mania where Taker was the American BadAss Deadman Inc. Big Evil Biker Taker, that is until Wrestlemania 36 with the Bone Yard match of course lol 😆. Taker had a tough streak challenge there because he was in a handicap match against Big Show & A-Train in Mania 19. The tag team title match was ok, and the intercontinental championship match was pretty good too. Wrestlemania 17 is my second favorite Wrestlemania of all time. Believe it or not but Wrestlemania 12 is my third favorite of all time because it was the second Wrestlemania show that I ever seen live on pay per view as it was happening on cable as a 13 year old kid and Shawn Michaels was and still is my favorite WWF/WWE wrestler of all time and it was awesome to see him become champion as a kid back then. The first Wrestlemania that I ever seen live as it was happening on pay per view cable was Wrestlemania XI. I chose Wrestlemania XII just for the nostalgia and the great memories of watching it live as a kid. Wrestlemania XXVI is my 4th favorite because of Career vs. Streak, the Randy Orton vs. Cody and Ted jr., Edge vs. Jericho, Cena vs. Batista, & Sheamus vs. Triple H. Wrestlemania 38 is my 5th favorite just because Stone Cold Steve Austin returned to fight Kevin Owens, then the Cody Rhodes vs. Seth Rollins match, the final Wrestlemania battle between Brock Lesnar vs. Roman Reigns, and couple other great matches too. I will say that Wrestlemania 40 claimed my number 6 spot though, beating out Wrestlemania 23 which is now my 7th favorite, Wrestlemania 18 is my 8th favorite, Wrestlemania 20 is my 9th favorite and finally Wrestlemania 28 is my 10th favorite in my entire top 10.
@@hottakestuesdays7450 Cool, I liked the beginning of HBK vs. Y2J here at WM 19 because it felt like HBK was battling against his younger more arrogant self in Y2J, and after their match at WM 19 their rivalry only got more better and more personal throughout the years. The best story at WM 19 though for sure was The Rock vs. Austin 3, it had a built up rivalry which spanned about 5 or 6 years, since both men were actually chasing the Intercontinental Championship, Austin literally threw that belt off a bridge, and later The Rock threw Austin off of a bridge. Then Austin just came back from that like a mad man & whooped The Rock in their rivalry until finally in 2001 at Survivor Series Winner Takes All, The Rock pinned Austin in that 5-on-5 team match as they were the final two men standing in that war, even though Angle snuck back in the ring to help Rock get the victory & betray Austin. Then in 2003 at Wrestlemania 19, The Rock vs. Austin was one on one, and the Rock finally got his victory over Austin clean after a hard fought battle.

And there are two phenomenal matches on this card with no concensus as to which was the best. From the lists I've seen and some interviews I heard, it seems to be 50/50.
Shawn Michaels is the greatest. When I was young my father always tells me that there is a wrestler who is not tall and muscular but can defeat anyone.

If I was Vince, I would've blackballed both of them after that "match." Michaels/Angle at 21 is my all-time favorite. Always happy to see it get the attention it deserves.
Rhodes vs Reigns had the big emotions but Ripley/Lynch was the better match at WM 40. Batista/Cena over Taker/HBK at WM 26 for me. Benoit/MVP instead of Cena/HBK at WM 23. And Undertaker vs Diesel was the match of WM 12, I'm sorry.
It's interesting to me that the general opinion on motn of 23 has switched over the years. Back in 07, most people would've answered Batista/Taker, but nowadays everyone seems to have come around to HBK/Cena.
I love seeing The Steiners Vs. The Headshrinkers get the credit it deserves. And while Savage Vs. Flair was VIII's best match, Hart Vs. Piper was a very close second.
First of all, Savage wanted to leave the company, and Vince’s booking and leadership did get any terrible until the late 2000’s. He is a horrible person and deserves to be erased but at least he acted like a leader unlike Tony Khan who doesn’t know how to be a leader and proved it with the CM Punk fiasco and the attitude era is still the best era in wrestling.
That scene after the end of the match at Wrestlemania 20 was exactly why the match *didn’t* have the feel that anyone could win the gold. It was very obvious heading in that the plan was to give Benoit the belt.
I’ve noticed a pattern at every 10th Wrestlemania. At WM 10, Brett Hart had a big win for the WWE Title. At WM 20, [REDACTED] had a big win for the Big Gold Title. At WM 30, Danial Bryan won the WWE Title and now, at WM 40, Cody Rhodes won the Undisputed Title. Every 10th Mania has a big baby face win in the Main Event, wonder if it’ll happen at 50
Correction lol bryan and Benoit weren't big babyfaces they run was only meant for 1 year and rest 2 were WWE selected to be big face. 1994 new generation era Bret hart was selected by WWE to lead their company. 2004 Benoit was only selected by WWE because he was so over among fans so WWE listen to audience that time. 2014 Daniel Bryan got pushed because he was over among fans but still WWE don't see him in wrestlemania main event but fans forced WWE to include bryan into mix. Even if bryan didn't get injured he would've lost to Lesnar at SummerSlam since cena was replacement for bryan for babyface. Now wm 40 Cody is handpicked by WWE in 2022 as top face of the company and only person to beat roman and looking at bad experience with faces in past WWE did experiment to have Cody a cena like run with bryan like support and rock involvement helped WWE to make Cody super over and their top face has now massive support. Among all 4 of them only Daniel Bryan was the one who got main event due to audience forced WWE to do so otherwise WWE wasn't even planning to have bryan in world title picture at mania
I like to consider each night of Mania as separate shows, so here’s my other picks: 40 night 1: Zayn-Gunther 39 night 1: Rhea-Charlotte 38 night 1: Edge-Balor 37 night 1: Bianca-Sasha 36 night 2: Firefly fun house match Also for Mania 33 it was totally AJ-Shane and 32 it was the womens triple threat that stole the shows.
5 Manias in a row for the Undertaker. 🤘🤘 I love the cheeky comments about the awful Saudi Arabia match DX vs Brothers of Destruction and everything Flair did post "retirement" which is likely what happens when you can't stop getting divorced or living your gimmick.
Whoa… I’m still watching, but seems pretty wild that between 37-39 not one women’s match was chosen, when there was a strong case they could’ve taken all three. 37. Bianca v Sasha 38. Bianca v Becky 39. Charlotte v Rhea
I don’t agree that Brock and Goldberg for 33 because honestly I’m not a fan of Goldberg, it’s fine if that’s your choice but mine would be AJ and Shane, it’s so good

HBK has the most number of matches in that list by a massive distance. He could have easily 2 or 3 more in that list.
That's why he is mr wrestlemania. Hbk vs Jericho should have been best match for Mania 19.
Should have also had the top spot for WM 10, his match literally got 5 stars from Meltzer
@@molokoplus0612 you’re right ! Hbk vs Jericho is definitely debatable with Kurt vs brock. I won’t even argue who anyone picks between the 2… and mind you hbk hasn’t worked a Mania in 5 years to that point.

Rhea v Charlotte was clearly the best match of that show, with Cody v Roman being right behind it. With hindsight, I might put Cody v Roman above them - because of the story being told. The Usos vs KO & Sami was above it too. I liked Gunther v Sheamus v Drew, but that weekend was fucking *stacked.*
Also, no offense to Cody v Rollins at 38, but how the fuck did KO v Austin not win that? Lmao
Starting with 40 and working backwards was a nice touch, especially for newer fans.
I was hoping it would be oldest to newest. But that's just me preferring to see how things conventionally developed and progressed over time vs going backwards to the beginning
Except for picking the wrong match as the best from WM40, it was a good idea, sure.
@HoV326 agreed because that would of made more sense for the video but I see why from a revenue perspective they would go the other way
No it wasn't. It's confusing and weird.
Makes far more sense to go in ascending order because you actually get to see the storylines, how they build up, how the wrestlers and WrestleMania and wrestling itself change over time, not to mention you can also make a part 2 starting from WrestleMania 41.
Thanks guys for all you do be it recaps, documentaries, or even top 10 list. You guys are the best.

Technically, Cody and Roman had three consecutive Mania main events.

I disagree with 30 and 19. Dont get me wrong the Miracle on bourbon at 30 was a legendary WM match and moment but HHH vs Bryan was the best match of the night is honestly one of if not the greatest Mania opener of all time.
I was somewhat surprised HBK/Y2J didn’t get the nod - that match is beyond excellent

The editing of this video is top tier and deserves its flowers😂
AJ styles vs Shane McMahon was the best of Mania 33
The womens triple threat was the best of Mania 32
Yep, well agreed. Aj and Shane roundly shot down those naysayers (who haven't given it their flowers because they hated it far too much in anticipation, it gets a polite round of applause. Aj was the best wrestler in the world and I don't know why anyone was depressed about the match happening because when Shane is in the ring with top tier performers, he always delivered highly - cough cough v Kurt Angle)
And people were dragging on the women's match too considering "the women's revolution" build up that nobody liked, but ON THE NIGHT they dropped all of that stuff and presented the women's triple threat like one of the biggest matches on the show and made it big time and the ladies delivered accordingly
Love the bit about douche chills when referring to Limp Bizkit. That's the kind of insightful commentary we love you for Adam.
Yes Warrior vs Savage & Savage vs Steamboat stand out to me the most
Of the WrestleMania main event stories from years that ended in the number 4 (1994, 2004, 2014 and 2024)
Id argue that Cody told the best story of all of them
His story had a nice blend of Bret Hart, Chris Benoit and Daniel Bryan’s WrestleMania stories all rolled into one
He became the first back to back rumble winner since Stone Cold, feuded with The Rock and had a main event featuring legends like John Cena and The Undertaker interfering on his behalf, capping off in Cody dethroning the greatest title reign of the modern era

Hbk vs Jericho was definitely wrestlemania 19 match of the night.
@@jerrym1218 nah i take brock angle. more realism in storytelling.
Then Austin just came back from that like a mad man & whooped The Rock in their rivalry until finally in 2001 at Survivor Series Winner Takes All, The Rock pinned Austin in that
5-on-5 team match as they were the final two men standing in that war, even though Angle snuck back in the ring to help Rock get the victory & betray Austin.
Then in 2003 at Wrestlemania 19, The Rock vs. Austin was one on one, and the Rock finally got his victory over Austin clean after a hard fought battle.
18:54 Undertaker having the best match of Wrestleamania for 5yrs in a row at that point in his career just goes to show just how good he is! Though having Shawn Michaels and Triple H in two matches each certainly helped plus Undertaker managed to get a good match out of CM Punk was an achievement by itself
The one change I would make is Wrestlemania 32, the women's triple threat should have been the match chosen. That match changed the landscape and future of women's wrestling to what it is today.

The Bryan/Sheamus match was 28, but I get the point.
In my opinion Rock vs Austin WM17 is the greatest main event in wrestlemania history.

Taker really did earn his status as THE WrestleMania attraction from 2009-2013
Does anyone else associate WWE with The Undertaker more than Hulk Hogan?
The fact that we never got a Savage vs HBK match at Wrestlemania shows how terrible Vince was at booking and leading the company.
I wish this had been from mania 1 to 40. I think it would flow better

This was awesome. Brought back some good memories
Now we need a tier list about all these matches to find out the ultimate best match in the history of wrestlemania 😁😁
I like to consider each night of Mania as separate shows, so here’s my other picks:
40 night 1: Zayn-Gunther
39 night 1: Rhea-Charlotte
38 night 1: Edge-Balor
37 night 1: Bianca-Sasha
36 night 2: Firefly fun house match
Also for Mania 33 it was totally AJ-Shane and 32 it was the womens triple threat that stole the shows.
I was really hoping this would be in ascending order from 1-40
5 Manias in a row for the Undertaker.
37. Bianca v Sasha
38. Bianca v Becky
39. Charlotte v Rhea
That run of women's matches was awesome.
I don’t agree that Brock and Goldberg for 33 because honestly I’m not a fan of Goldberg, it’s fine if that’s your choice but mine would be AJ and Shane, it’s so good
Charlotte and Rhea definitely should've got some consideration
18:32 what tag match in Saudi?
Great video BUT putting this in reverse chronological order felt very weird and counterintuitive to the overarching stories between each Wrestlemania
Wait what Undertaker vs Batista Stole the Show at WM23. That's literally a unanimous decision. Cena vs Michaels huh
