- In this episode, I fix the drum brakes, yes I said drum brakes on my 1963 Ford Galaxie. I also have a cool magic trick and tech tip. Let me know what you think about my tech tip.

Ford 5.0L Coyote Engine
The Coyote is a 5.0 liter, naturally aspirated V8 engine from Ford Motor used to power sports cars like the Ford Mustang and pickup trucks like the Ford F-150. Featuring a dual overhead cam (DOHC) design, in a V configuration, the Ford Coyote architecture has been part of the Ford Modular family since 2011. The engine has seen some revisions since then, the most recent being in 2018.
This engine was first engineered for the Mustang GT so it could compete with the GM 6.2L LS3 engine used in the Chevrolet Camaro at the time. The Coyote had to remain the same size as the outgoing 4.6-liter V8. It was also Ford’s first implementation of its Twin independent Variable Cam Timing (Ti-VCT) technology on a V8 engine, a feature which considerably improves fuel economy and power delivery all while reducing emissions.

I remember those lathes. At 16, 50 years ago, I worked at a service station as a pump jockey. Pumped your gas, checked your oil etc. Remember those guys? Full service gas stations. Remember those? Owner taught me how to use it and made me a shop helper/tow truck driver. Shocked many customers when a 16 yr old kid came to tow them. They called the shop and Bob the owner guaranteed there will be no damage to the vehicle because he was the one who trained me. He was my dad`s mechanic, and a Marine Corp buddy of his. Good times

I remember them too! I worked for my Dad 1961, at 16, also .Full service and more> Dad had a 2 bays, 2 hoists. Brakes, clutches, tune ups on an old Sun machine etc. Tire repair with a manual tire changer, $1.00 a piece unless we put a boot in it (Bowes) ...can you believe we stuck boots in the tires! Was still in farm land back then so lot of tires from their old trucks and manure spreaders, nasty. Of course I had tire duty and there was lots of flat tires back in those old tube days.
Man, around here none of the parts stores turn drums anymore. Pretty cool of them to let you use the machine.

Forty years ago that was how we changed the hydraulic oil on a D10 Caterpillar Tractor. You would pull vacuum on the top of the tank at the fill port and then remove the drain plug and attach the drain hose. If you just pulled the plug you ended up with abut 15 gallons of oil all over the tractor and yourself. Later on they installed quick drains that all you had to do was thread in the drain hose and the oil would drain out then.
Haven’t turned a drum or rotor in years. Lots of memories, good and bad. Just used the shop vac trick to fix a leaking PVC fitting on the hot tub. Need to get back to my automotive project but still fixing the house. Thanks.

We have the same problem in my area, good luck finding a guy who can run equipment like brake lathes. I've had to train auto parts guys and service techs on how to use their equipment to get my project going. Crazy world we live in.
I learn more in 11 minutes on your channel than 2 hours of watching your sidekick do shop tours.

seeing drum brakes get renewed was a trip down memory lane, I was shown how to do drum brake work in the driveway by my dad, back in the fifties. I might have done it once for a friend, if memory serves.
I favor an oil change valve over the usual plug bolt, which in this case would mean only having to tape and install the valve once , verses renewing the thread tape every oil change. of course , tape is a lot cheaper than the valve, and I get the impression this guy doesn't keep his cars around forever and might not want to donate the additional part to the next owner.

a couple of things I learnt way back in auto shop, how to turn drums and rotors and how to dead time an engine... don't need those skills anymore, but its cool to say you know how...

I remember as a kid going with my dad early on a Saturday morning to get a brake job at a local shop, we had to get there early because they only had one lathe to turn the drums, if you got there late you would have to wait a couple of hours for how ever many people were in front of you, great times

I worked at Komatsu building excavators. Sometimes after we'd filled the hydraulic tank with 80 gallons of 10w oil we'd have to pull vacuum on the tank to change a suction hose or a bad valve. Works great. Good to see it again. Thanks.

Thanks for the Video... Great Tech Tip...Never thought of that. If I ever get my Chevelle back on the road, I'll have to find out where that place is...I don't think anybody even knows what "Drum Brakes" are here in the Valley. I do know they don't know how to do anything but "R&R" .$$$$.

Lucky....Surprised drums are still being turned here in NYC maybe a old speed shop might turn them what's left of the speed shops but most of the times you have to buy the drums or order them on the web man how times have changed....was LMAO do we need a oil change fellows noooooo....💯😆👍🙏🏁

That was cool what you did with the vacuum and back in the day I used a Aamco drum machine to turn the drums and then they got the attachment for disc brakes!!!

It's been a LONG time since I turned a Drum or Rotor. It's not easy to find a place that actually does it anymore! have been known to use an angle/die grinder with a Roloc disk on it in a pinch.
That's the 2nd time in the last 24 hours I've seen the vacuum cleaner trick on RUclips. Maybe that can be the new challenge craze to do on RUclips or wherever?? Send it to all your friends in the biz and see what happens! I suspect mayhem and a lot of kitty litter on garage floors across the world 😂

Yeah, learned that vacuum trick working at the Jiffy Lube in the 90's, techs would forget to change the drain plug washer in certain applications...or a more controlled way to drop some oil from an over-fill. Way to bring it back, I had almost forgotten!

Pro tip .... plug the other vent (pvc or breather) when using this method. Pro tip 2 - be sure to explain this issue to helper who is sitting on the fender which is on the truck which is on the lift. Pro tip 3 - playing music at 11 can confound communication.
Man I remember my 71 cutlass had 4 wheel drums and I had brake fade one time because I was doing some spirited braking and no matter how hard I pushed that peddle that beech wouldn't stop.. thank god I didn't wreck!

Lucky, your pipe plug in your pan needs to thread in further. The only right way to fix this is to remove the pan and tap the hole deeper with a tapered pipe tap.
Some guys might try doing it on the engine by applying grease to the tap and running it in a turn or two, then pull it out a clean off the metal and repeat. But it's risky as you may not capture every piece of metal and nobody want shards of metal in their engine for obvious reasons.
Using the white thread tape I would have wrapped the plug 4 times around. I would have used yellow tape 2 times around!
I saw the exact same method being used to change BMW's oil level sensor, I'm surprised how well it works!

One way to stop the chatter when you’re turning drums is to place a piece of wood on the boring bar and that absorbs the chatter

Definitely like riding a bike. I worked at a tire and brake shop all through highschool. I had the exact experience with my local parts store, came back hours later to only be met with a list of excuses of why they couldn't cut my rotors. I cut them myself and they were too embarrassed to charge me.

Don’t use the white Teflon tape for oil or gas, it is water only. Petro products will melt it quick. They make blue for petroleum.
Taking me back to the 60's when I was a yute working in a gas station. Our lathe wasn't as nice but I can still hear the drums getting round.

A pipe fitter told me a trick is to use tape AND pipe dope.
Retp!! New rotors are sold at minimum.thickness so they can't be turned!! I'm kinda surprised you are dealing with the drums. But, drums are ok for the interim.

NONE of the O'Rielly's around here will turn drums or rotors with the integrated bearing races, have to take mine to a machine shop, all they want is to sell you new ones.
