In this tip, Brett explains how to find your mix; the most commercial and radio-friendly part of the voice. Another exclusive tip, only from Singing Success.

1:54 That's the sound I end up in when I'm trying to find my mix, and I didn't think that was the mix voice, I thought it was just a dopey head voice. Because when I add power to it, I just end up in head voice.
dude o.o i tried it out, and the wonderful noise my voice made literally just startled me o.o i can reach the same notes as adele now :D *keeps practicing* thank youuu :DD
"the opposite of yelling is singing soft... the opposite of singing soft is yelling - or squeaking... opposite of falsetto is yelling - or singing soft in - or in a squeak"...
(my head explodes)
You do a wonderful job!
Man, I'm doing this exercise with the fry and it's working pretty good! Thanks a lot for the tip!
Great tip!
thanks so much!! still working on the Singing Success discs...but already i've improved! God bless!
this is just finding it but of course tons of practice strengthens it
Congrats!
The best thing to do is to relax..Plus practice.
I have learned more in 20 minutes from this guy than in 2 90 minute dvds I bought at the music store.
Brilliant, thanks! Is this similar to Seth Rigg's "edge/creaky-door" arpeggio
excercise?
WHOA!!! I just did vocal fry for the first time and hit a not in head voice that I've NEVER been able to hit without falsetto!!!!!!! BAHHHHH!!!!! EXCITEMENT!!
Thanks, thanks a lot! :D you really help me a lot! thank you again :D
This is so cool
I have a mix, I have 3 octaves but sometime, during a perferming my voice is blocked on 1 or 2 notes...usually it's on A or Bb....before the HC....so I breathe and compress in the same time and sometime it's a good exercice for caring... What is the real problem?
damn mixed voice is so fricking hard to learn...
Hi Brett, like Kathryn I also notice that I'm still not achieving the desired amount of power (or chest-like) strength as I would like in my mix. It doesn't entirely sound like I'm in the head voice region, however when I compare my mix voice to lets say some contemporary artists such as Katy Perry, there's a definite lack of power or depth. As such I feel myself reverting to chest. Im a soprano so I can achieve quite high notes with my chest voice but my goal is to develop the correct technique so I can achieve a higher range. Your feedback would be much appreciated :)
@babykidd2 it depends, you can belt forcing and destroying your voice, or you can use technique, for example vowel modifications (obviously with open throat), good support and of course 'GLOTTAL compression' to manage the amount of air while you pull up chest.
These tips r fuckin amazing...
Well I mean it depends on how you use it and now I know that. Thanks for your time in replying! :]
i agree... he needs to see me sing... tell me i sound horrible.. and teach me to be amazing!
please somebody help me!!! I have been doing the exercises...keeping my larynx neutral....I used to make the mix easily with the exercises...but lately I feel no strong on my nasal resonators...the sound is just in my mouth...like caught What is happening to me?please brett.!!!
makes so much sense...now show me how to do it :).
I've just been attempting the vocal fry to get to a certain note that's giving me trouble in chest voice, am i right in saying that it kind of (at the moment because I'm still begining) it feels a bit like head voice, but with less air coming through, so, more compression, but in a relaxed way? x
YES! singing soft with squeaking !! i got it!....but i still got some vocal fry when going down back to my chest...and sometime a bit when going up....how do i get over this thing..?
I don't know how I did it, but with what he demonstrated here I was able to hit a few crazy ass Chris Cornell pitches that I always thought were way beyond my range with EASE!
Aaaaand now it's gone. FML.
nah, he was just showing that the mix voice is the bridge or connection between head voice and chest voice. so you can see the transition between the two types of voices .
Is it natural for vibrato to occur when you're in the mix? cause that's what seems to happen to me! awesome.
@bluedagger46
I warm up almost every day as I have either a choir rehearsal or bass sectional four days a week. I do sing bass in a male chorus and a chamber chorus, as well as a barbershop quartet, and am the only guy in the school who can do all the optional low notes. I am extremely proud of what I can do!
However, I'm also lead vocals in a rock band, and hold as much passion for that as I do my choral/barbershop stuff.
Also, for bulging-with-manliness low notes, check out Rajaton.
Cheers!
@89gerardo Belting too much in the chest can be damaging and using the mix will allow you to belt in the upper registers.
@hefra344
Well I do practice for it, I'll always want to be able to higher! But my voice goes down to the A below bass C. I can hit the G on the very best of days, so it makes sense that my voice is a little lower than average. Also last year I took an injury to my neck (slammed my adam's apple on a metal pole while falling off a ladder). Before that I did bridge at the E. After that I can only do the C.
Your mix sounds exactly like my falsetto o_O (non-breathy falsetto that is)
How do you strengthen your mixed voice? Cause mine feels kinda weak. :|
my problem is that i cant hit any note in vocal fry
i go like G1 A1 G#1 B1 C2 A1 something like this
i watched it with the program melodyne
so i dont stay in pitch but go from one note to another while trying to "sing" one note
is this normal or am i doing a wrong way of vocal fry?
in 2:23, what does ''vocal fry'' means?
And can i do high notes like a B5 with the mix
My singing teacher tells me I need a mixed voice. I am so sick tired of yelling or flipping my notes.
@89gerardo Belting can hurt the voice and eventually you won't have much voice left for belting! You can only belt so High the mix allows you much more range!
Hello! Im Mathias Motter from Argentina, I have 18 years old and my head an mix voice sounds good but it is so unstable and the volume is very slow, I can´t control it, Im using a small portion of air in order to not have any type of strain and I don´t know what I am doing wrong.
If you can help me I will be very greatful
Thanks!
Its what you would call a light head mix... still a mix as if you noticed his voice was still connected through his break :)
@onlyallegra Oh okay (: Thanks and your right, my voice teacher is mainly classically trained and I am going to him for commercial voice training but he is barely getting his certificate or something to teach commercial music. Thank you!
I will continue practicing this
Something that confuses me is if I think I'm a baritone but I learn to hit "tenor C", does that still make me a baritone?
Stephen McIntosh With head voice?
@hefra344
If that were true, I should be able to hit the D in chest. I suppose at some volumes I bridge at an E
Hi, Brett
Here is Jorge speaking from Brazil.
Would you mind to add subtitles in English to this video? I'm really interested in translating it to the Portuguese, for brazilians non-English speakers, but would like to stick the most faithfull I could to your original one. Regards.
@JakobRobert00 You might have nodes or you're just doing the fry wrong think of humming when you do the vocal fry and the vocal fry sounds like the girl from the grudge haha hope that helps let me know!
I love Singing Success! How can i get my free 15 minute session after purchase of both Singing Success and Mastering Mix? I have been using your system for 3 years now and I feel i am so close to break through.
Regards
Nathan
Hi Nathan - contact our studio (888) 269-7758
this is mix? it doesnt sound chesty at all though. it just sounds like a head voice
Jake Kim You can make it sound more heavy, this is just the base tone.
+schism206 how to make it sound more heavy? mine weak like a fking falsetto...
so this commercial voice is head voice?
@xniks101x Your voice teacher is probably classically trained only. I went through e months of vocal therapy at Bastian Voice Institute after losing my voice for days and ending up with the raspiest of speaking voices. I'm a mezzo-soprano, so voice type doesn't matter. They had me use the vocal fry to repair my voice because of the glottal closer it provides. It just takes practice. Always warm up in the lowest part of your voice & work your way up using the fry.& your range will increase.
@Msvictoriamarie lot of people are talented, you are not the only one, all of us want to be awesome ;)
Sound more like head voice to me
@hefra344 Well either I'm wrong, or now you have =)
sir, you need to see me sing, realize my potential, then teach me to be awesome. =)
@BroadwayKidNamedJosh Ohhh I see what you mean now. Thanks. :]
@hefra344 It was just a joke... Besides I bridge at the D above middle C
Fucking hell yes!!!
@meercachase
some people would pay good money to hear that
@hefra344 I know... I was there =P
why mix if you can BELT?
I thought that it is headvoice.
This didn't work for me )':
Voice Teacher said it doesn't work for sopranos or tenors...? idk...
Still love the vids though, Brett!
Lolz. 'Unless you're a bass'. I'm just screwed then aren't I? XD
yes. baritone doesn't determine range, it only determines what you sound like.
i'm shit
since this comment though i haave practiced HARD! And now can do it! :))) sort of......
and now it is frickin easy! keep practicing people! :D
DannyO this is beautiful
no, it's not only head.
@bonestorm99 Auto tune only helps if you can already sing. That's what it's for. To polish vocals. If you can't sing, you CAN'T sing. Auto tune won't change that.
@bonestorm99 Right, I agree. But only auto tune only helps so much. If you were that bad, you'd sound like T-Pain or some bullshit. But regardless of all else, auto-tune really only compliments singers with actual ability. It's not a miracle worker. I don't know why every one automatically assumes that auto tune can make Selena Gomez sound like Celine Dion.
press 5 over and over then hold down 2
what if you haven't even learned how to make the mix voice?
ha ha ha I just found my mix it's sound. . .Cee lo Green ish ha ha
His "mix" sounds like it's just a pure light head voice. ???
It sounds like a head voice, wtf!!
1:33 section - wtf??? :)
In my point of view... there's no good or bad kind of sound... If the sound just fits the expression then it's alright... u might have bad quality of falsetto but u can't say falsetto is a bad thing because of that...
Why do people say falsetto is a good thing? Isn't a bad thing because you can't get the volume.
SO thats how the mix sounds like???mmm............ok ok
nah because it's clear / not breathy, it's not as powerful as hayley williams for example but it's a mix
i sound like im a pig about to be slaughtered :[
you could just try singing and then the yelling and squeaking wouldn't be an issue...
Head voice fellow, ur misunderstanding. arent u?
it's kinda like mix voice. isnt it? do u know if i can reconnect my voice in that way?? i had lost my voice nd im trying to reconnect it once more. i ty fellow.
i gotta take a dump.
What the fuck is the mix?! He talks about finding the mix but never explains what a mix is!
